Lurie Named 4th best Owner by SI

4 Jeffrey Lurie Philadelphia Eagles
Purchased 1994
Purchase Price Current Value W-L Winning % Playoffs Championships
$195M $1,116M 131-104-2 .554 9 0
Lurie has brought consistency to one of the more historically volatile franchises in the NFL (one of his predecessors nearly went bankrupt and another nearly moved the team to Phoenix). Under the Boston-born Lurie, the Eagles are financially secure and have a modern stadium that will guarantee the team continued self-reliance. The Eagles have also had the most success in franchise history, reaching five NFC Championship Games in eight years and appearing in their second Super Bowl.

I know that a majority of this site really likes the Eagles FO, but I think its always a good reminder to those that don't how good we really have it. You can point to alot of things that have brought the Eagles success over the last 10 years, but I think it all has to come back to the Owner.

Interesting note that the Giants family of owners is right ahead of Lurie. I personally would vote for Lurie before the Mara &Tisch family because he was able to turn a franchise around so quickly, but it certainly is a topic for debate.

I wonder if there is anyone that couldn’t have guessed that Rooney would be the best and Davis the worst?

The fact that Lurie is on this list shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who hasn’t had their head up their ass for the past 15 years. We really do have a good thing going, unfortunately the near misses have turned people greedy instead of grateful.

Very true

the people who aren’t happy with the FO always want the big name players or the fabled “True No.1 WR” but if you take a second and look at what the organization has done over the past decade or so its pretty amazing … even though they dont make the popular moves all the time they usually always make the right ones … just take a look at what they did in this years draft … on day two they traded their third round pick and eventually ended up with ellis hobbs and 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks in next years draft for basically nothing … bravo

Well, right now Al Davis is a very, very bad owner, but still not the worst. If you look at the entire time Al Davis has owned the Raiders, he been pretty good. Three Super Bowl victories and induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame are things most owners in the NFL will never get. William Clay Ford is by far the absolute worst owner in ALL of sports. I think overall, Mike Brown of the Bengals has been a worse owner than Al Davis. I’d put Al Davis at the third worst CURRENT owner, but acknowledge that he had quite a run in his time.

I call bullshit

Dan Gilbert made the top 5, but Paul Allen didn’t.

Jeez

I agree, Lurie’s a great owner. Does it surprise us that someone named “EvilBanner” doesn’t agree?

Check this out. I always thought Lurie was brilliant, paying $195M for a team now worth $1.1B, until I saw that Wellington Mara and Robert Tisch paid a measly $500 for the Giants, now also worth $1.1.B. Talk about smart, long-term investment…who knew these franchises would be worth so much these days? If I ever get a billion dollars, I’m buying a sports team.

P.S.

That’s a return on investment percentage of 235599900.0%

over 80 years though :-)

factor in some year to year inflation, and i doubt the picture looks as pretty. still impressive though

if they bought the team in 2009 it would have cost them $6,077.40 (inflation calculator) still a nice investment but 1925 happened the be the year the Giants were established so I believe they were just buying the rights to start a team which is not the same.

Bert Bell (with 3 other guys) bought the rights to the Eagles in 1933 for $2,500. Using the same calculation for the Giants, the Eagles would have cost Lurie 22,983,564.52 in 1925 so that’s an interesting thought.

Bert Bell...

…was a hell of a guy. Check this shit out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bert_Bell

1. Established the NFL draft
2. Founded the Maxwell Football Club
3. Became NFL Commissioner
4. Pushed for the revenue-sharing system
5. Best of all, coined the phrase, “On any given Sunday…”
