Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Runyan among big names still unemployed

Photo

The Sporting News had an interesting article about several big name players that still want to play, but haven't been able to find a job. The list includes Jason Taylor, Chris McAllister, Edgerrin James, Derrick Brooks, Marvin Harrison, and former Eagle, Jon Runyan...

Jon Runyan, OT

The situation: The Eagles swiftly replaced Runyan, 35, with Stacy Andrews(notes) in March, and the veteran tackle is still rehabbing after offseason knee surgery. At 6-7, 330 pounds, he can be a physical presence but will need to prove his health.

Scout's take: "He's lost a lot of mobility, and he was never a tremendous athlete. He's always been that road-grading right tackle. The question is, do you give him more help? Do you want to have the running back constantly chipping to his side? Do want to keep your tight end in? The league's getting more athletic, and it won't be too long before you see right tackles who slide like left tackles. We're getting enamored with athletic ability, and he's a throwback."

TSN lists the Steelers as an "ideal" landing spot for Runyan.

Id rather see him retire. Hes got a career in broadcasting and id rather have him be healthy than sacrafice his body for one more year in the nfl. He’s paid his dues and we all love him but i want the best for the guy and playing another year and gambling with your knees is not the best option.

Neck Hair

I can’t wait to see him in the booth. I just hope he doesn’t shave his neck hair that I remember so fondly from huddle shots where it covered the whole screen.

Hey, who wouldn’t want an aging right tackle coming off a significant knee injury and one year removed from a significant back injury?

People who make lists like this tend to forget that veterans who aren’t signed are veterans who don’t have to put up with crap like OTAs and endless off-season meetings.

Stacy Andrew is coming off an injury, yes.
Aging? Well everyone is technically, but he’s in the prime of his career, so no.
Right Tackle? Probably not.

Evilbanner, you let me down again.
