Is a TE worth a first round pick?

Article over at NFL.com

I bring this up because there is a lot of talk about the Eagles drafting Brandon Pettigrew.  IMHO this is actually a pretty shitty article but I thought it could raise the discussion.

Is a TE worth a first round pick?

I personally think the middle to top of the first round is a reach for Pettigrew while others think we'll be lucky if he's still around.

Last years top TEs (receiving):

Tony Gonzalez     Round 1
Jason Witten     Round 3
Owen Daniels     Round 4
Chris Cooley     Round 3
Dallas Clark     Round 1
Antonio Gates     Undrafted

Everyone knows I have a man crush on Celek and really believe he can be Witten-esque for us.  I also know that we need to add depth to the TE spot, can we do that later in the draft? ... absolutely but I ask you .... is a TE worth a first round pick?

I think Pettigrew is and he probably will be one

He’s a guy that is a really really good blocker and also catch the ball. If we dont get him though, i think Celek can do a good job this season. I think he’ll step up.

Honestly, I think TE is the most undervalued position in all of sports

But the utterly obscene amount of highly touted TE prospects that turned out to be misses is nothing short of horrific. Tight ends really aren’t worth a first-round pick unless you know what you’re getting, and since you never know what you’re getting…yeah.

nice article this was sort of what I was thinking I think WR is only more questionable.

Good post...

Seems like you get a starter for the most part at least and most of the names are recognizable and stayed in the league…

Only if

its Pettigrew and its our 2nd, 1st round pick. ie.after we get Knowshon or DBrown.

Even the most elite TE prospects are barely worth late 1st round status IMHO. They should start to be picked up late 1st or early 2nd, but certainly not within the first 10-15 picks. Just my opinion.

Also, if you are athletic/talented enough to get drafted in the top 10 as a TE, then you shouldn’t be a TE, you should be playing another position where you can be used to your full potential. Most TE’s are busts anyway, and the position seems very hard to evaluate, so that’s why I would lay low and commit a lower round pick (2nd, 3rd, 4th) for a TE.

my thoughts exactly

TE is a position where you have to be good at every thing(blocking sometimes even out of the FB position, catching and sometimes running routes out of the WR position) and not many colleges have there TE do all that(even more so now with the rise of the spread offense). It’s a catch 22 the players that are good or great receivers can’t block that well while the players that can block are normally too slow or not very good rout runners.

The real question... is a BLOCKING tightend worth a 1st??

The idea that top TE prospects are barely worth a late 1st is just ridiculous. Where are all these highly touted TightEnd Prospects that turned into complete nothings in the league?? Take a look at first round TEs over the last 5 years and the biggest busts you can find are Benjamin Watson and Vernon Davis?? That really isnt that bad. If anything it appears that a bluechip TE can offer AMAZING value in the late first/early second (Keller, Olsen, Miller, Clark, Heap)

2008 – NYJ/28 – Dustin Keller – ProBowler within 2 years if Rex Ryan brings in a QB
2007 – CHI/31 – Greg Olsen – Putting up more numbers than the 30th pick (craig davis wr/sd)… either way not a bust.
2006 – SF/6 – Vernon Davis – Now I may lose some people after this one but I am still a Vernon Davis fan. Guy has NEVER had a decent QB throwing him the ball and has become one of the better blocking TEs. At 6 you would have to say BUST but I think that could change if Singletary would accept a mid rounder for him (or draft a QB to throw him the ball).
2006 – JAX/28 – Marcedes Lewis – Not a game changer but I wouldnt call a bust either.
2005 – PIT/30 – Heath Miller – Down year but def not a bust
2004 – CLE/6 – Kellen Winslow – A doushe… but a doushe that has put up 200/2500/12 over the last 3 years
2004 – NE/32 – Ben Watson – snoozer
2003 – IND/24 – Dallas Clark – Amazing value

Thats basically what I said, I agree with you there. My main point was that taking a TE high in the 1st round is dangerous and risky most of the time. Especially when you consider the quality available for other positions early in the draft.

Also, according to your stats 2 out of 4 tight ends picked in the late first round are busts. And yes I would say Lewis is a bust because if you could go back in time I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t spend that 1st rounder on him again. So 50% hit rate from 2003-2006 means you are basically playing a guessing game as to whether you made a good pick on a late 1st round TE.

That's a good question...

I believe, with the talent out there, we have an opportunity to fill other gaps before tight end. I have faith in Celek, the kid seems very legit. If Pettigrew is around at 28, maybe I’d consider. We do need somebody who can block on the outside that is for sure. But I think we grab one of the RBs first, then who knows what Andy and Co. will do..For some reason I feel RB coupled with a lineman in the first round, if we even still have 21 & 28 on draft day..anything can happen on draft day, us as Eagles fans know this first hand! The Eagles love wheelin’ and dealin’ their picks..Although, I’m pretty confident we’ll actually have a pick in the first round this year!

Yea i agree with you in the first round..

I do see them making a trade somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd and maybe addressing TE then with Cook or Ingram.. I just hope we have Moreno or McCoy but the end of the first day.

I just think they need to get rid of Schobel. He can’t block and isn’t a game breaking TE or anything like that. His lack of blocking skills in the 3 TE sets is pretty much worthless. I don’t think there is a single LB in the league he can block.

So basically what I’m saying is we need a TE. On the other hand, I don’t think we need one in the first round. There are plenty of athletes that can be had later in the draft. Pettigrew is only being considered a first round pick because he’s the best of the TEs in this draft. I don’t think that means he has 1st round talent. He’s just the best of the mediocre.

But of course, I’m also not an NFL scout

What about our TE's coach?

I hate to call a guy out because I’m as much an armchair quarterback as the rest of you BUT when would be the appropriate time to question a positions coach on this team?

Tom Melvin is entering his 11th season as a member of the Eagles offensive coaching staff and his eighth as the club’s tight ends coach. He served his first three seasons as the team’s offensive assistant/quality control coach.

Melvin has played a key role in the development of tight ends Brent Celek and L.J. Smith. Smith was a second-round draft choice in 2003, who has hauled in 249 passes and 19 TDs (including playoffs) over his first six NFL campaigns, and Celek led the team in the 2008 postseason with 19 receptions and 3 touchdowns.

EIGHT SEASONS and your resume is LJ Smith and Brent Celek!? Is that acceptable?

Not sure if anyone watched HBO’s Hard Knocks last year, but the one positive thing I could give Dallas cedit for was their TE coach – a Princeton guy: John Garrett. At first he seemed like a total tool and he rode the hell out of his TE’s, the rookie especially. But you can’t knock the position. Garrett jumped on board in 07 & you have to wonder how much credit a positions coach should get for strength at a position. In the two seasons there, Witten had his best season and Dallas developed/is developing Fasano, Curtis and Bennett into better players.

I want more from Melvin, I want more from our TEs, I want blocking, I want ball security at the position, I want red zone production, I want first downs, I want yards after the catch.

If we need to spend a 1st round pick to get those things out of the position then so be it.

Bottom line

Is that there’s talent and there’s coaching. The coaching is primarily responsible for both hand picking the talent and then developing it.

Have we give our TE coaching enough talent at the position or have we not given our TE talent enough coaching?

by andyreidswaistline on Apr 8, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to think most of it comes down to talent. I can’t say that I’ve been overly impressed w/ the developmental progression of the TE position for us; which is strictly a coaching problem. We def. need depth at the position and I think the Grew would be able to step in and challenge for the #1 spot from day 1.

Loooooook here brotha'.....who you jivein' with that Cosmic Debris!!!???
