Eagles working out Tackles and Punters?

Monroe_eugene_medium

- This report is nothing new, but there's even more rumors of top rated OT Eugene Monroe coming to Philadelphia for a private visit with the Eagles. For a shot at drafting Monroe, the Eagles would have to make a move into the top 10 of this year's draft.

- The same article mentions that Alabama OT Andre Smith is also scheduled to visit the Eagles. Smith was dominant in college and may have been a top 5 pick if not for his rather disastrous pre draft period. He flaked out on the combine and looked out of shape during a poor pro day workout. He seems like a major boom/bust proposition.

- PFT is reporting that the drafts' top rated punter, Kevin Huber from Cincinatti, has had a private workout with the Eagles. Sav Rocca was brilliant at times last year earning NFC special teams player of the month honors in September, but seemed to fade a bit at the end with some really poor performances specifically against the Redskins and Bengals. He is still probably learning the NFL game, but at the same time he is 35 years old. If the Eagles could grab a guy that would be a great punter for the next 10 years with a 6th round pick... It might be something worth doing.

Hmm...

My take is that this is smoke and mirrors. I think our O-Line is set; Herremans moves out to LT and the best man among Cole/McGlynn/Jean-Gilles will be LG. I don’t see them taking an O-lineman early; they just want people to think so.

Well

Let’s work some Tackles out. Herramanes was AWESOME at LG last year — probably our best lineman for us in 08. If we can find a tackle prospect that can be pro bowl caliber for the next 10 years… I say trade up and get it!!!!

But...
I say trade up and get it!!!!

You’re talking about trading up for a guy that could be the #1 overall pick in the draft. He’s not dropping past the top 5…so it’s not as easy as all that.

by ajay on Apr 5, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let's say...

…conservatively that he’s available at #3. You’d have to give up both 1st rounders and maybe as high as a 3rd to get him. Do you want to give up all that?

you can trade picks next year and further on. If we move up I would see us trading 1 first rounder this year and 1 next year not both this year. That still gives you the option of trading down with the other first this year for a first next year and it’s a wash.

Yeah, he’d be our LT for the next 10 years… It’s tempting

absolutley

nothing we can get at 21 and 28 is better than monroe .. i would do it .. althought peters for 28 .. would solve the problem and still let us draft a corner or DE or LB at 21

Its an interesting call, obviously any single one player won’t compare to Monroe, but we’d likely be losing both 1st and then more. If our line is good enough with the in house guys, that would allow us to add guys like a top 3 RB, and maybe a Pettigrew, Ayers, or Sean Smith with 1st rounders.

im not sure if its smoke a mirrors

i think they are just doing a good job of looking at every possible angle, u are not going to trade up for a guy if you haven’t seen him and why would they waste all these work outs on tackles if they had no intentions of drafting one?

Yeah, I say

doing their prep work and examining everything so they’re not unprepared for any scenario which presents itself.

Also, I think the Banner(?) quote “we have enough to do anything we want to do” is pretty telling.

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome

no way

they are not set .. i love MJG .. hes a special player .. but hes coming off an injury .. cole is a decent lineman .. and could pust jamal jackson for the center spot .. but herremans is not our best lineman .. hes serviceable .. hes ok at guard .. but we could do a lot better .. i think a healthy mjg might push him for his job .. stacy and shawn are locks .. jackson or cole at center .. and we get another tackle .. monroe or peters. . than the last spot is at guard between herremans and MJG and i think its closer than you people think

I have been wondering if we would do anything with the Punter position because Sav is good in the first couple months but bad in the last couple. I wanted us to sign Shane Lechler before he got franchised(or signed an extension with the Raiders)

look

more knowshon .. monroe is 10 times more valueable .. i think you guys dont like this because its not knowshon . i think if they had a vote to trade 21 and 28 to move up and get a player .. everyone would say go get knowshon .. this obsession is a little much

If anyone would trade 21 and 28 for Knowshon, its Anuj. I’m hoping no one else would.

Maybe we dont want teams to know we are interested..

Just a thought .. I gotta believe they have enough tape on him and know he fits our system.. I bet they are just praying he falls to them at 21
