Which sports analyst do you dislike the most?
Like it or not, the Philadelphia Eagles are one of the most covered football teams in the world of sports media. Whether you switch on to SportsCenter, look at the Daily News, or listen to WIP, it is almost a guarantee that somebody is discussing the Birds in some way, shape, or form. More often than not, sports analysts like to paint the Eagles and their fans in a negative tone. Some of these reporters have been dishing out knowledgeable sports stories in the area for years, while others have no clue what they are talking about. My question to you is this…
Which sports analyst do you dislike the most?
It could be for a number of reasons. Maybe you don’t like the person because of their constant negative attitude towards the fans. Maybe it’s because they talk a big game, but can’t back it up with facts… Or maybe you just hate the guy.
Let’s not limit ourselves to members of the local media. Your person could be a newspaper reporter, a commentator, radio host, television analyst, etc. Just in case you’re having a hard time coming up with someone, here is a brief list… Dan Patrick, Rich Eisen, Michael Barkann, Chris Berman, Sal Paolantonio, Angelo Cataldi, Ray Didinger, Mel Kiper, Les Bowen, G Cobb, Stuart Scott, Howard Eskin, Derrick Gunn, Anthony Gargano, Trey Wingo, John Madden, Rhea Hughes, Howie Long, Glen Macnow, John Clayton, Al Michaels, Terry Bradshaw, Al Morganti, Bob Costas… and I think there are a few others. Have fun.

For me... It starts and ends with one guy...
Tony Kornheiser. If I cared about pop culture, I’d read US Magazine. Who thought it was a good idea to hire this guy?

The good ones...
are the ones that are objective… yet aren’t afraid to criticize, and know that the game isn’t about them. For football, I put Cris Collinsworth at the top of that list. He’s funny, and almost seems to enjoy bashing players. Didinger is great, too, but more for his true, objective nature. Brent Musberger is a Hall of Famer, and he’s at his best when he not-to-subtlely talks about the point spreads with comments like “There are lot of people in Vegas right now that are on the edges of their seats for this field goal.”
But the absolute best announcers in sports, BY FAR, are the 3 guys that do the Mets games… Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, and Gary Cohen. I moved up to North Jersey (actually, like 5 minutes from Giants stadium), so I actually see more Mets games than Phillies games, and those 3 guys are fantastic.

I hate Chris Collinsworth and his smug, condescending attitude, what a douche.
by ralphd58 on Apr 5, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think he likes Chris
I also love Collinsworth, because he actually puts hours of film study into his games and thus both 1) obviously gives a shit and 2) actually knows what he’s talking about. It’s happened a few times that Collinsworth has added really valuable gems of information in his commentaries that have sprung up later in the game as particularly pertinent or worthwhile

I'm actually a Collinsworth fan too
He was one of my favorite players back in the early 80’s. Have to give props to a white-guy wide receiver who dated Playboy playmates back when he was still playing.
His voice is a bit grating and annoying, but otherwise I like him.
I’m probably showing my age, but I miss guys like Merlin Olsen, Charlie Jones, and Bob Trumpy.

Cornhizer(spelling?)
he doesnt know a thing, all last season he rooted against the eagles, then made a big deal when AZ beat us in the NFC championship… he always got people started on how McNabb was going to be traded to the bears… he really doesnt know anything about football, during just about every monday night football game Jaws corrected him, then he argued with jaws then Jaws would prove it in some way shape or form… oh and he always says “i never played sports but…” which if didnt play sports(not counting injuries, medical conditions) then i dont feel you should be a sports caster…

For me
I have harped about Bill Simmons before, but he’s relatively benign. I have lately really begun to hate John Gonzalez from the Inquirer. I think he was hired to write an endless string of hateful articles. If we win the Super Bowl he’ll write a column the next day about how the margin of victory wasn’t enough.

The tv analysts on ESPN (dont remember who they were)
that are picking the Giants to be the best team in the NFC East when the Eagles just went to the frickin NFC Championship game and whooped the Giants on the way! The Giants finished the year losing 4 of their last 5 games without Burress and they released him. They dont know shit about what they are talkin about. They are the same people that said Buckhalter and Lito Sheppard were major contributors to the Eagles after they got rid of them.

Joe Theisman is really bad. I have never heard him say anything that was worth hearing. I didn’t know he went anywhere. I am glad to hear he went somewhere and I hope it is far away from me.
Madden is really bad. Everyone knows that though.

Sean Salisbury
He was a dick with no actual input that people had not heard before. He also was a patriot and Peyton Manning Lover which drove me crazy, I mean honestly McNabb could have the best game by a QB ever and he would be salivating over how Peyton or Brady throw the fade route. Just totally annoying.

I forgot about that guy!
You’re right. He was a top rate d-bag! He takes a close 2nd place finish to my hatred for Merril Hoge.
My favorite Salisbury moment: During an argument with John Clayton, Salisbury attempted to prove his point by telling Clayton, “You never played in the NFL.” Clayton, noting that Salisbury spent most of his career as a backup quarterback on the sidelines (he received about a year’s worth of NFL snaps in an eight-year career), fired back, “Neither did you!”

The problem is...
My favortie commentators normally work with the ones I like the least.
I cannot stand Madden, Joe Buck, or Tony Kornholer.
However Madden works with Al Michaels, and as much as it hurts to say this, I like Aikmen. Even when covering an Eagles Cowboys game he is unbiased and gives credit to the Eagles when credit is due.

To me, its not even close:
Merril Hoge. That stiff hates the Eagles with passion. I loved the segment that aired during the Super Bowl Weekend (PHI-NE) which showed all of Merril’s predictions for the Eagles game each week. Naturally, he picked the Eagles to lose 95% of the time. And clearly that isn’t what exactly happened during our 13-3 run that took us to the Super Bowl.
What a stiff. Also – will someone please tell him to unbutton a few buttons on his jacket? Unless maybe he’s doing that to conceal the pole that’s shoved up his ass.
Yeah – I hate Merril F’in Hoge. I’ms surprised that no one mentioned him sooner.

I use to like Joe Buck until he started being biased as hell this year, I don’t understand why ESPN has Kornheiser as a football analyst but I like him on PTI, I can’t think of any others right now.
I like Moose Johnston and Kenny Albert the most on FOX and I think they should get all the #1 games on FOX since they are better then Buck/Aikman. Other guys I like on FOX are Tim Ryan, and Brian Baldinger, I don’t mind Aikman but he can be biased at times like a couple of seasons ago when we beat Dallas 10-6 in Dallas it seemed like all he was saying is you never know when this Dallas offense is going to score
On CBS I like Jim Nantz and Phil Simms, Dan Dierdorf and Randy Cross. I also like Bill Cowher and Shannon Sharpe in studio I kind of wish Sharpe was with ESPN rather then Chris Carter.
On ESPN I like Berman, Jackson, Ditka and Jaws

Merrill Hoge is a good vote, same thing with Sean Salisbury. Sean is a little more annoying than Hoge because he has the nerve to criticize Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees on their decision making and QB skills. I mean if I was a lifetime backup, I would keep my mouth shut on my position. The one that takes the cake for me though is Ashley Fox. If ever there was someone who wrote about drama and not football it would be this chick. All last year she was on the lastest flavor of Donovan Drama. We make the playoffs she is still trying to start shit. All time worst in my opinion is Ashley Fox.

It has to be McCarver. Moron has been screwing up the World Series for years now. He is the reason I have to watch the WS with the radio on or no noise whatsoever.
Skip Bayless, Skip Bayless, Skip Bayles piece of total crap.
I think a terribly close third is Steven A Smith, dude, stop yelling at me, you don’t know everything. Shut the hell up.
ESPN is full of them though, Berman is old and past his prime, Salisbury is now gone but he sucked, Hodge has no insight and full of himself, J Marriotti, Kornheiser, that network needs to go.

The guy is so annoying. What topped it off for me was when Lil Wayne made a guest appearance on First Take. Never in my life have I seen a guy suck up sooooo much to another guy. But I crack up each time he calls a woman “hun” and asks her what’s she cooking for dinner. Sadly, that insult goes over most of his female callers’ heads as they usually answer him.
I also think its funny when a caller busts his chops on air and he gets mad and calls them a nitwit, or “chief”
So I guess I find his show entertaining, but you’re right – he is a hairy werewolf asshole! hahaha

There's a lot of bad ones
The worst are the Notre Dame tandem from retardation hell. That would be Lou Holtz and Digger Phelps. Mark May and Dick Vitale are atrocious as well. Steve Phillips is the worst at analyzing any singular sport, and this man had the job of building entire baseball franchises.
For professional football, Emmitt Smith was absolutely insanely awful. Right now, though, it’s a dead heat between Joe Buck and Phil Simms. Joe Buck is intentionally stupid, though, while Simms is innocently terrible. The nod’s got to go to Buck.

close enough
he basically said McNabb was getting attention because he was black and the media wanted a black QB to do well.
“The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well … McNabb got a lot of the credit for the performance of the team that he really didn’t deserve.’’
It’s not a racist comment but it implies 2 things first that the media just wants to show a black QB doing well regardless of truth, and two that McNabb isn’t as good as he is made out to be.
He could have just said " McNabb got a lot of the credit for the performance of the team that he really didn’t deserve." there was no need to bring skin color into the mix.
"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"

I should have said:

Emmitt Smith is down right terrible but Aikman is not far behind. Aside from agreeing with everything Joe Buck says, Aikman is the biggest homer announcer I’ve ever heard. The bad:
Joe Theisman. He was just awful.
Chris Berman. I used to like him, but his act has really gotten old.
Merrill Hoge. Could the guy be any more anti-Philadelphia?
Garry Cobb. My all time favorite moment came when a guy called his WIP show. The guy started gushing about how great Garry was and said he respected Garry’s opinion all all four sports, even hockey. The caller then asked him, “Can you explain icing to me?” Garry just hung up on him. It was classic.
The good:
Ron Jaworski. He gets Philadelphia and I think he’s really knowledgeable.
Ray Didinger. Probably the nicest guy out there. I really enjoy listening to him talk about football.
For hockey, I really like Mike Emerick. I really enjoyed it when Emerick and Bill Clement used to handle the play-by-play and color commentary for the Flyers on Prism back in the day.

Most hated
- Phil Simms – I have to mute the TV on the rare occasions he’s calling an Eagles game. His hatred for the Eagles vibrates through every comment he makes.
- Deion Sanders – Every time I see him talk about McNabb or Philly, he’s making an argument that the Philly fans don’t deserve McNabb and he should get out of town.
- Troy Aikman – Similar to Phil Simms in his contempt for the Eagles, but he has gotten better, probably because he has called so many Eagles games that he had no choice.
Honorable mention goes to: Joe Theisman (total idiot, thankfully he’s gone), John Madden (too annoying), Joe Buck (go back to baseball, you douche), Pat Summeral (too many senior moments), Mel Kiper (please somebody de-throne him).
