Kevin Curtis, not our future slot receiver.

I know many people get excited thinking of the prospect of Maclin becoming our number 1 reciever. With Jackson being a solid number 2, and Curtis and Avant in the slot.

Well Eagles fan, don't get too used to it. I just looked at Kevins contract. And it spells trouble for him after next year. See for your self:

Year Cap Value Base Salary Proration Other Bonus Dead $ If Cut
2007 6,336,453 1,000,000 333,333 5,003,120 0
2008 3,833,333 1,900,000 333,333 1,600,000 1,666,666
2009 2,333,333 1,900,000 333,333 100,000 1,333,333
2010 4,833,333 3,400,000 333,333 1,100,000 1,000,000
2011 5,726,453 4,000,000 333,333 1,393,120 666,666
2012 7,341,453 6,000,000 333,333 1,008,120 333,333
Signed as a free agent for 6 years, $26,700,000 in the 2007 offseason. The deal included a 2M signing bonus, a 5M roster bonus in 2007, a 1.5M roster bonus in 2008, a 1M roster bonus each year from 2010-2012, a 100K workout bonus each year from 2008-2010, and a 385K LTBE incentive in 2011.

Pay special attention to year 2010 and up, I put it in bold to make it easier to find. Also, notice how little prorated guaranteed money he is due, I put that in italics.

Basically, unless Kevin reworks his deal, I doubt we keep a 5 million dollar slot receiver for 2010.

Maybe the Eagles had that in mind when they drafted Maclin. If you recall, Andy praised Crabtree and Harvin, and Tom Heckard warned us that we would draft a RB past the first. My guess is, if Maclin wasn't there, they were going to take Harvin to replace Curtis past this year. But since Maclin slipped, it made it an easier pick for them.

There is no way Kevin stays for that kind fo money, also consider, his money is not guaranteed.

Depending on the development of Maclin and Jackson this year, your thought may very well be the course we take

I think that's a good point

Knowing the Eagles’ FO and looking at those numbers and the depth at WR … Kevin’s going to have to have a really good year, and still might be asked to rework his deal or walk.

That is crazy, not even Wes Welker gets that money. Wes got a 5 year 18mil contract, and he’s a Pro Bowl WR even though he plays the slot.

if fairness to Curtis, we signed him to be out top WR, not the slot WR

We aren’t paying him like a top WR, we’re paying him like a slot WR. I don’t see why they wouldn’t keep him on through 2011, as long as he’s as productive as he’s been the last two years.

I don’t think you have to be a 1 or a 2 receiver to be one of the top receivers in the league. Once again Wes is the 3rd receiver on the Pats and he’s been very productive. But he he was signed to be that #1 guy. I do agree with that………….. I wonder if he feels a certain way that they drafted Maclin.

What if Curtis reads this?

I don't see how we pay him 5 mil for 2010, with Brown crying.

We cut Spikes las year becuase he was making 5 mil. Wow, how did we not know about that contract.

Eagles were gonna draft a WR in the first regardless.

I think he’ll be in a little bit. I really don’t see him getting Djax mintues unless someone gets injured, or he has a crazy training camp. He didn’t play in a very organized offense in Miz….. so I think it will take some time for him to understand a much harder offense. Hopefully he does a better job than
Ryan Moats did. lol

I bet he plays little early on

but we see a lot of him in December and January.

With the selection of Maclin, the emergence of Jackson, and the development of a Avant… that will eventually make Curtis expendable… Plus Reggie Brown is still around. If he can get back to his 06-07 form, he can do what Curtis does.

I don't know about you...

…but I would rather have Curtis than Brown.

yeah don’t worry about the mult-million dollar cap hit we’d take

I still hold out hope for Brown … probably because he seems like a cool guy.

In his defense, he does have LTBEs of 1 mil per year.

I am sure those are unatainable and we will be credited that amount the next year anyway. So that will lower his salary about 1 mil a year. Unless the bonus is a roster bonus, than that will furture aggrivate his situation. Causing him to get cut.

Oops, I just checked, those LTBEs of 1 mil I mentioned are not LTBEs at all.

Those bonuses that you see every year is a roster bonus. He will get in all likelyness.

this is a serious question...

would a wide receiver with 112 receptions, 8 td’s, and 1400+ total yards be worth $5 million a year?

LMAO…. what do you think???

those were wes welkers numbers in 2007 when he played the “slot receiver” position. i’d say he was worth every penny they paid him.

by awd777 on Apr 29, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

+1 Wes is worth every penny

If you read what i have been saying I hav been saying the same thing……. but the difference is Wes Welker singed a 5 year 18mil contract but Curtis signed a 6yr 26mil.

But didn’t really play much of a number 2, Gaffney did. they have him listed as a #2. But played the slot most of the time.

that’s only a difference of ~700k a year in the NFL that’s not that much money, just saying.

Look, if Curtis has another 1,000 yard year.. he’s not going anywhere regardless of his salary.

Plus, if there’s no cap next year his salary isn’t really a concern.

by JasonB on Apr 29, 2009 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

Y would you get rid of someone who if he produces……….. makes no sense to me. I know that’s money but if he is producing………. everyone is talking about Sheldon wanting more money…. but he shouldn’t because he should honor his contract. Sheldon is getting bashed for wanting more money. So y wouldn’t the organization get bashed for not honoring there contract with Kevin if he’s producing? Is that a “do what i say not what I do type deal”?

hatin on curtis

yes his numbers are somewhat inconsistant, but he is good reciever and i wouldnt be surprised if he starts the season as the number 1 reciever while he more then likely wont be the number 1 reciever too long he is still an important piece of this team and an important part of playoff run(couldve been great part vs cards). He can still come across the middle and work the outside.

Not sure how many people are hating on Curtis. The idea is that next year or in 2 years, when his contract gets ridiculous, and Jackson and Maclin theorticaly develop into better WRs, he might cut since as a 3 (assuming the kids can over take him) he’s definitely not worth the money he is scheduled to recieve.
