What will happen with Jason Avant?

Im pumped to see Maclin play but I cant help but wonder what andy will do with Avant? I loved Avant last year. He has the best hands on the team in my opinion. He caught almost every pass thrown at him and was a big help on 3rd downs. He has deffinently stepped up to earn a spot on this team. What kind of impact do you think drafting Maclin will have on Avant? I think they will rotate in and out. I just hope andy puts him on the field enough so he can make some of those clutch catches.

I was wondering the same thing.

They will probably rotate unless Maclin just blows Andy away. I think everybody loved Avant last year but he’s just about hit his full potential. Pretty excited this year about DeSean and Maclin.

Obviously we have no idea until after camp

But…if I had to venture a guess I would assume that Avant keeps his 3rd down/slot position. He really performed VERY well in that role, and I would try to fix what ain’t broke. I could see Maclin in the slot on 1st and 2nd, or maybe they switch him with Curtis, and he runs the outside…but I don’t see Avant getting replaced on 3rd down…he’s a beast.

Also, do you think Andy will use JMac to return kicks?

sorry...*wouldn't* try to fix

he'll definitely return kicks in his first year.

you can’t step on avant’s progress. what if avant is good for 7-8 TDs? what then?

Agree

I too think we’ll still see Avant on 3rd downs at least. He came on late last year. Remember that, other than DJax, there’s really not a history of rookie receivers getting a ton of playing time in our offense. I think Maclin’s impact this year will be more in the return game.

Avant has a role in our offense that I don’t see Maclin replacing. In the long term I would think that Maclin would take playing time away from Curtis, not Avant. And before you flame me remember I said long term.

Andy said if he shows he can return kicks and punts that he will...

On the radio yesterday, he said he would like the other guys to focus on their positions…

by PoppiDamus on Apr 30, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

yea, i don’t think we can assume too much until after training camp. but i’d like to see avant continue to be used on those third downs in the slot where he excelled last season.

i don’t see why maclin wouldn’t be used as a PR or KR as he’s shown amazing abilities in. i think a lot of people got spoiled over how well djackson did last season as a rookie in the eagles’ offense, so i wouldn’t be too disappointed if maclin is sparingly used until he learns the offense better.

by notfromphilly on Apr 29, 2009 5:47 AM EDT reply actions

i think andy will start curtis and jackson, but rotate maclin in those roles during the game. then, we will see avant used in a similar way as last year. knowing how much big red likes to rotate everyone, i don’t think a whole lot will change.

by awd777 on Apr 29, 2009 7:11 AM EDT reply actions

This is funny

When was the last time you can remember that this team had too many decent receivers? For the sake of argument, lets say that Maclin turns out to be the deep threat that we’ve wanted. I’m not going to say he’s a great NFL receiver yet, but lets just say that he draws a shaded free safety given his speed. I think that would make him a shoe in for the X position where curtis is. I think curtis and avant would make great 3rd and 4th receivers since Curtis fits the slot-Y position better than the X position. I think Jackson maintains a firm grip on the Z position and won’t really rotate out. Then you have Baskett and Brown still, and that’s not including the other guys from last year that didn’t get much time, and all of the new guys that will be competing. I think that halfway through the year though, IF maclin pans out, he wins the starting job from curtis in the X position. First half of the year he’s in rotation. But I think that Curtis is really designed for the slot. With these new acquisitions I don’t really think that Curtis and Brown will be around for very much longer.

How many receivers do you see us keeping, especially since we’re so deep at this position now?

by thwalls on Apr 29, 2009 8:59 AM EDT reply actions

Number of receivers

Assuming they keep six:

SE1 Curtis
SE2 Maclin
SE3 Avant
SE4 Baskett

FL1 Jackson
FL2 Brown

They could also try Maclin at Flanker although if he could stick at SE that would be ideal. Gibson or McBride could steal a spot from Baskett.

by DK Jr. on Apr 29, 2009 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Curtis is the one on the hot seat

Maclin’s role will likely be to stretch the field, meaning that Avant will still work the middle of the field on the intermediate routes. Assuming that Jackson continues to play off the LOS because of his size, Maclin will be best served lining up at split end and going deep until he figures out the 10-15 yard routes in the Eagles offense. Remember that in Missouri’s spread offense Maclin was either running a very short or very long route, so there is a learning curve here.

The key thing for Maclin off the bat is whether or not he can beat a corner jamming him at the line – if he can do that he will steal playing time from Curtis at SE. If he can’t, then his playing time will be limited as I don’t expect him to slide into Avant’s possesion receiver role.

Assuming, of course, he doesn’t beat out Jackson at flanker in which case D-Jack will see fewer snaps. That would be a worst-case scenario IMO.

Yeah, these two don’t have the same roles and won’t be competing.

by bsencore on Apr 29, 2009 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

If used correctly

Kevin can be used like Wes Welker which will make our offense hard to defend. Not saying Maclin is Moss but there are similar in the way the strech the field vertically.when the Pats had the speed with Moss and Stallworth……. Wes was hard to defend againts because no one wanted to get beat deep. I think if used correctly we gave have that type off offense running threw here in .

Rotate them all around

the defense will not know who to cover and what that receiver will do
also all the Wr’s will most likely create a mismatch with a LB on RB and make the defense stretch the field
- the corners/safeties will have to play deep leaving the middle of the field more open, blitz less, and allow more time in the pocket and less resistance in the run game. it opens up the field for McNabb, then when u get to redzone situations, we can run dual TE’s will Celek and Ingram

Rotate them all around

please god no.

was i the only one that noticed how improved we were last year toward the end of the season when Andy stopped his WR rotation nonsense?

I Agree

Continuous rotation doesn’t allow DMAC or the WR’s to get in rythem. It’s fine to rotate them but there must be a consistant 3 or 4 that are always on the field. there was a major difference once the 5 receiver rotation stopped last year.

No, you weren’t.

by MRPH on Apr 29, 2009 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

rotate

andy believes all his wrs are capable of playing and he will use them all .. and has differnt packages for each .. like baskett because hes bigger .. and maclin and jackson to use their explosiveness on screens and reverses .. but they all will play .. reggie and curtis prob start .. with desean playing a lot

by jack is better than asante on Apr 29, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Reggie will start?

Over DJax I take it? ………………………………………………………………………………….
……………………………………….

Um, no. I don’t think that will happen. Unless Reggie has a monster training camp he will be fourth at best and probably lower than that with DJax, Curtis, Avant and Maclin all ahead of him. Jackson is clearly the superior WR to Reggie at the #1.

by NOLACuse on Apr 29, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

maclin

maclin is to young to play over reggie .. and avant is not even close to reggie talent .. reggie starts .. n if not its only because D Jax had a great camp and jumps over him .. D JAX curtis and reggie .. two of them start .. not sure what two yet .. could be any .. they all will play tho .. more than the other wrs

by jack is better than asante on Apr 29, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

what are you saying Jack??

DJax by far out played Reggie brown and is no doubt the better player.

Sure Reggie brown could very well make the team as our 6th receiver, and could challenge baskett for the 5th spot, but saying reggie is going to win the starting job over desean is ridiculous

by Manoovi on Apr 29, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Reggie is definitely higher than Baskett, and I would have to assume higher than Maclin, at the very least when the season starts. A lot of people got spoiled by Jackson’s numbers, that’s rare for a rookie WR to step in that quickly. Maclin was pegged as a top 10 talent so its possible, but don’t assume.

I wouldn’t be suprised if Reid likes a healthy Reggie Brown as a 2 or 3 WR like he was suppose to be last season. I agree its unlikely Maclin will be ready for a major impact to start the season. If Avant continues to improve, he might be the only one in the way of Brown as a top 3 option (besides Reggie himself)

by FredEx on Apr 29, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

actually

reggie was on top the depth chart .. he was hurt .. he didnt play hardly at all alast year and when he did he wasnt healthy .. he is clearly higher than avant and baskett .. and at worst is our number 3 wr .. desean played a lot because he was hurt ..

by jack is better than asante on Apr 29, 2009 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, jack.

that’s why avant was on the field during the championship game and brown wasn’t…..because brown is so much better.

by snowhill82 on Apr 29, 2009 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he will have the same role as last year come in and move the chains on 3rd down. If Maclin progresses a lot this year I think this could be Curtis’s last year here.

by The Legend on Apr 29, 2009 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

I dont think it will be his last year. Why would you draft a reciever to just get rid of one of your starters. Andy really likes curtis and he’s played pretty well for us. I think curtis will play out his contract here.

by andyb on Apr 29, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

can you imagine curtis and macklin on one side and jackson and ingram on the other along with westbrook out of the backfield? try to stop that! as long as mcnabb doesn’t throw ground balls to his receivers, i think we’ll be alright…

by ringordietryin on Apr 29, 2009 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

he will

he will play a little .. not cosistantly .. the eagles rotate all their wrs .. but reggie curtis and deasean will see the most action .. baskett and avant will play a few snaps

by jack is better than asante on Apr 29, 2009 12:38 PM EDT reply actions

your on crack..reggie will probably not even dress..hopefully you meant maclin..and its spelled desean..

by andyb on Apr 29, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

maclin

maclin is not ready to get serious reps at wr .. brown prob starts .. the above post is the reason i get mad

by jack is better than asante on Apr 29, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

maclin

maclin will return kicks and they will run some screens and such for him .. but he wont catch more than 25 balls .. hes still raw

by jack is better than asante on Apr 29, 2009 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with that

I’m really tempering my expectations on Maclin. He’ll be a stud in a year or two or three, but we’ve got so many good receivers in an offense that requires a ton of WR polish that I think it’s unreasonable to expect a DJack season outta him year 1. They’re completely different players.

I hope Reggie plays well enough in camp that they use him to give rest to Jackson & Curtis on the outside, or Jackson can play the slot since he runs great routes and can rack up yards after the catch, so basically we’ll just want to get the ball in his hands — a 3 yard route can get you 15 if the ball gets into Jackson’s hands.

I’d have no problems if our WR lineup was:
X = Curtis
Y (Slot) = Jackson
Z = Brown
and then on 3rd downs you sub in Avant for Jackson, you have specific packages for Baskett on the flank, put Jackson out on the Z spot for some types of routes, and get Maclin in anywhere ya can as often as ya can. Jackson does operate very well next to the sidelines as well, but that somewhat limits his ability to get yards after the catch because most balls to the sideline end up with the receiver stepping out shortly after the catch, whereas (maybe this is subjective) most balls that are short routes over the middle to small speedy receivers seem to net an extra 4-5 yards.

I also think we’ll see a lot of 4 WR packages this year, as well as a ton more 2-TE sets in the redzone and at the middle of the field.

Did anyone else hear....

That last year Jason Avant was coming off of a sports Hernia too?
I heard it right after the season.
He just started coming on really hard at the end of the year too.
If he wasn’t 100% and is this year, we could have a lot of good competition ahead.
It makes me wonder about our conditioning program though.
