Draft breakdown.

The Eagles have done something that we are all guilty of. What’s that you might ask? Shop discount! But I mean that in the best of ways.

Have you ever wanted that pair of Ralph Lauren slacks, but just figured you didn’t want to drop $75.00 on it. So what do you do? You take a ride over to Ross or Marshals, and you riffle through the isles. Then all of the sudden, just out the corner of your eyes you spot it, those very same slacks. Only now you only have to pay $19.99, same slacks, just way cheaper. Is it bad that you paid less? Or is it prudent?

This weeks draft showed me that the Eagles are very prudent on how they draft. Let’s talk value for a minute.

Lets use the ESPN grading system to review each picks.

1st round pick, Pick 19, WR Jeremy Maclin.

ESPN grade 95

ESPN rank 7th best player

Notes: Maclin was the lowest draft player with a 95 rating. Next lowest pick was Brian Orakpo (rated 95, went 13). Maclin should have left no later than 9. A steal at 19!

2nd round pick, Pick 53, RB Lesean McCoy

ESPN grade 88

ESPN rank 34th best player

Notes: Although not as complete a RB as Knowshon Moreno, due to Moreno’s blocking skills (grade 95), but certainly as good, if not better runner. Donald Brown was graded an 89, he was a first rounder. McCoy was graded 88, should have been a late first rounder or early second.

There would have been no complaints if we would have drafted Donald Brown @ 21 or even McCoy at that same spot. Yet we got him in the second @ 53. Another steal!

5th round pick, pick 153, TE Cornelius Ingram

ESPN grade 86

ESPN rank 40th best player

Notes: ESPNs 2nd highest ranked TE, Brandon Pettigrew rated 93, Jared Cook rated 83, Chase Coffman rated 74. It's a surprise he was selected so low. I know mockingthedraft has Cook and Coffman above him, but ESPN had Ingram as a 2nd rounder (factoring in the injury). This may be the steal of the draft. He was by far the lowest drafted player with a 86 rating. Next closest 86 rated player drafted was Rashad Johnson S drafted by the Cardinals @ 95.  This is a Lexus car, purchased at Pontiac price. Andy should have got arrested for that one.

5th round pick, pick 157, CB/S Victor Harris

ESPN grade 66

ESPN rank 107th best player

Notes: His hit tape calls him a shut down CB, and says that he was projected as a first rounder, but should slip to the second. Also mockingthedraft has him projected as a second rounder as well. ESPN disagrees a little with those reports, ESPN rated him as a 4th rounder. But still in many peoples opinion, a good pick for value here.

We also drafted Brandon Gibson, who Todd McShay said was the steal of the 6th round. Mockingthedraft had him ranked higher that a 6th rounder, his grade with ESPN was 60, not that grade a grade but he was rank 120th best player, and a projected as a 4th rounder. Then we have Fenuki Tupou, we was graded 62 by ESPN, and ranked 119, also projected a 4th rounder. Finally I will review Moises Fokou, he was graded 44 by ESPN, (not good by any stretch of the imagination) but still was ranked 183rd best player, and was projected as an early 6th rounder. I was not impressed by the pick of Paul Fanaika, he was drafted around where he was projected, he only bench pressed 24. He will likely not make the team.

Expect Tupou and Gibson to compete with Justice and Basket respectively.

We did a good job of not over drafting as well. We did not just pick a player because we had a pick. This would have caused many players to get cut, rather we traded a ton of picks to help out next year. Great job Andy, great job.

Great Post

This is the skill of Andy Reid at work. I bet if you do this for every Reid draft, you’ll find similar results. I am ecstatic about this draft class and the holes they fill on our team. With all that value:

I am factoring in and Hobbs into the equation, we have 3 starting caliber corners, one of the best nickel corners. That should take pressure of our only “weakness” in the secondary safety. The defense should be just as ferocious last year as this year

I’m predicting the eagles offense to be top five in the league, both rushing and passing. Our offensive line should be tops, and we have two starting caliber rushers, small shifty guys to fit through the many holes that peters and the andrews brothers will tear up. In the passing we have desean going deep, maclin cutting short across the middle, and curtis running mid range…very few teams have 3 corners can compare with our receiving corps.

Until the camps start

I dunno what to think

I don’t know if I’m excited about the draft or upset we couln’t get one of the Receivers we we’re trying to trade 4. My problem is that we have 3 small receivers…… Macklin is the biggest of the bunch but not much of a difference. I really don’t know what to think……. @least about Macklin…….. I do love McCoy, i think he’s gonna be a stud. I think Cornelius Ingram was a steal and he’ll be a good player for us…… but i hate the fact he doesn’t like contact. Can someone bring me to the “green side” and help me be excited for this draft .

Hakeem Nicks is the next Boldin..... Am i speaking English????????????

Maclin is a great receiver. He is considered to be the most NFL ready WR. Even more so than Crabtree.

He is a YAC machine, and works well of the slot. This means we can probrably work him in quicker than expected. I don’t want Curtis in the slot, I want Maclin for now, he runs really, really well after the catch.

Have you seen this guy return kicks? Bananas, he has a way of making the defender lean to a direction, and then he shifts the opposite. He does’nt really cut, just shifts his direction while in a complete sprint. That will make him a great Kick off guy. Maybe even a punt return guy. But we are loaded with those guys. Macho can run back punts, as well as Jackson.

Maclin should be able to contribute some early, as a slot guy. Next year Curtis moves to slot.

According to the media…… Hakeem Nicks was the most NFL ready WR in the draft. He was the better of the two …… he’s a way better athlete than Nicks. But Nicks is ready to start for the Giants….. he runs better routes and has better hands…. but is slow as S!@#. lol

don't know where you got that report from. Sounds fake. (joking)

How could you say that with out laughing. Common, I know Hakeem is your boy, but Maclin was the 7th ranked ahtlete, number 2 ranked receiver. And is a YAC machine.

I think Nicks is gonna be good, but Maclin has a ton more talent and upside.

Did you forget, we have Weaver now?

Fades don’t work anymore. Who doing fades besides AZ? Not many teams, I think Kyle Eckle makes this squad above Booker as well.

Everybody wants a jump baller, but those passes are trouble. We simple run the ball in now. I think Nick Cole is the starting Center at the beging of the year. And Andrews should be at guard again. That will allow us to move the pile more. There are other ways to get the ball in the End zone.

Who has a better overall receiving core in the NFL. Top to bottom? We cant complaine anymore.

Ummm, Andy seems to disagree with you regarding Maclin’s hands…

You look at his hands, his ability to catch football, he didn’t drop footballs.

Here’s my take… Yes, right now Nicks may be a more polished WR, but Maclin is more of a playmaker and a gamebreaker. This team alredy has polished route runners, but what we needed is to add a player with the ability to score every time he touches the football, and that’s what Maclin is.

additionally, it’s about the system as well… Andy doesn’t buy into this whole jumpball thing. he wants guys who can create after the catch. that’s what the offensive system is based one, and Maclin is that guy… i’m saying overall he’s a better fit for this team

foos

way to jump ship on your player .. shows how much loyalty u have

by jack is better than asante on Apr 27, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Loyalty to the team

is way more important than loyalty to the player. What has Sheldon Brown done for me? He’s helped out the Eagles, which have done much much more for me. I love him because he’s an Eagle, and the second he starts to take away from the Eagles, either via team chemistry or holding out or whatever, is the second I “jump ship” on him. Because I’m sailing on a much more important boat — the U.S.S. Eagles.

So is foos. Enough of this bullshit about loyalty to players. Did you cheer for his parents to have sex and have him? Their parents? If not, then at some point you jumped on his bandwagon too.

What kind of loyalty has Brown shown ME? I’ve cheered for him since we drafted him, just like I cheer for every Eagle as soon as we draft him, and he’s thanking me by being the only blemish on an outstanding off-season. He can go f*ck himself for all I care, unless he decides to help the only reason I ever cheered for him in the first place, which is the team that showed him loyalty by giving him a fatass contract when he was a nobody. If he puts on his Eagle helmet again, I’ll cheer for him again.

So will foos.

and dawkins...

he didn’t bitch and moan til we gave him a new contract and act like a big D bag the whole offseason. He entered FA and got a ridiculously good deal. There’s a difference btw/ him and sheldon right now. Sheldon is being a whiny little girl. I love the eagles, and I thought sheldon was great. Mostly because he was a solid player and added to the team that I love. now, he’s taking away from the team i love, so he can go to oakland and get paid 20 million dollars a year by Al “i’m a lunatic” davis for all i care. Just don’t mess up the team.

atleast im loyal .. i stick by my boys . sheldon is underpaid .. he can ask for more money thats his god given right .. if i was underpaid id ask for more money too .. get as much money as you deserve .. if you dont than you are the idiot .. not me

by jack is better than asante on Apr 28, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree Sheldon is underpaid, and yes he does have the right to do what he’s doing, however the eagles have the same right to have him ride the bench (fining him if he holds out).

A lot of people root for the team first and foremost, and If a player leaves they become less important if they are important at all. Also, they way you leave can mean a lot.

And if you think anyone turned their back on Sheldon, that’s really not a fair comment. We don’t know him personally, so most of his fan’s liked him for the perception of him that they had of him. When he started bitching about his deal his perception changed, and thus their liking of him changed.

If your wife cheats on you, is it wrong to stop loving her? Its only natural to now dislike her, or at the very least like her less.

Jack

Yeah, I’ll root against Dawkins when he plays us. I don’t want anything bad happen to him, but I hope he doesn’t play well. That’s not fucked up, Dawkins would want me to do that if I were a true Eagles fan which is what he is and was. I’m not going to actively root against him, in fact I’ll give him a standing O when his name is announced just like with AI. I have nothing but respect and love for what he accomplished here. But that chapter’s over, so will I root for him? No. I’ll root for the Eagles.

You also ignored almost all my points. I know you’re not an idiot, so why don’t you actually give counterpoints or agree with them?

Hakeem Nicks wasn't even the best wide receiver on his team.

That would be Brandon Tate.

To me, this isn’t even up for discussion. Maclin is a top-10 talent any draft – Nicks is potentially a solid college player with a good workout session. He might be good, he might not be. Same with Maclin, same with all the players in the draft.

Maclin is definitely the better talent and higher ceiling, though. And you take that every time, because there’s really nothing else to draft for. The kid truly has a chance to get 1,200+ total yards in his first season, and should be a YAC monster for years in our system.

The easy way to the End zone, is to not get tackled in the red zone.

These players are all home run guys. I can envision a ton of long plays for TD, no redzone problem this year.

It's also not libel

Definitions of libel:
1 a: a written statement in which a plaintiff in certain courts sets forth the cause of action or the relief sought
b (archaic) : a handbill especially attacking or defaming someone
2 a: a written or oral defamatory statement or representation that conveys an unjustly unfavorable impression
b (1): a statement or representation published without just cause and tending to expose another to public contempt (2): defamation of a person by written or representational means (3): the publication of blasphemous, treasonable, seditious, or obscene writings or pictures (4): the act, tort, or crime of publishing such a libel

The quotes:
yophillybro: “Giants – Plexiglass, Bengals – TJ. Cowboys- TO. should I go on”
whiskeybill: “you could go on by naming a wideout that didn’t get traded this offseason or going to jail”

Whiskeybill meant: Yophillybro could continue to name wideouts that A) did not get traded this offseason (erroneous comment, none of the WRs were traded, both were signed through FA, but this is a very minor point, since effectively they traded teams) OR (operating word) B) [are] going to jail. The first is in reference, as noted, to TJ and TO. The second is in reference to Plaxico Burress, who will see jail time.

Definition by definition

1a: It’s not a written statement by a plaintiff, so it’s not 1a libel
1b: It’s not a handbill that is attacking or defaming anyone, so it’s not 1b libel

2a: It doesn’t convey an unjustly unfavorable impression, since it only talks about what has happened or is guaranteed to happen. He doesn’t, for example, say that Plaxico has killed dogs with Mike Vick. So it’s not 2a.
2b1: It is not a published statement or representation, and is not unjust, since, again, it is simply stating public fact — they’ve already been exposed to the public contempt. So it’s not 2b1.
2b2: It’s not defamation of a person by written or representation means, because he’s not defaming them. He’s citing public knowledge, and not saying anything obviously untrue. So it’s not 2b2.
2b3: His post is not blasphemous, treasonous, seditious, or obscene in its writings or gestures. So it’s not 2b3.
2b4: Therefore, he has not committed the act, tort, or crime of publishing such a libel. So it’s not 2b4.

Nicks has great hands, and uses his body to box out defenders.

Nicks has a great body, and is a tremendous athlete. He isn’t a jump baller, and should be more of a red zone threat than Maclin. Neither really go up for the ball. But Maclin is great with space, he makes people miss.

Crabtree is the best redzone guy, and Nicks can delelope to be a good redzone guy in the future. Maclin is a Steve Smith type, last I checked, he doesn’t struggle to get in the endzone, does he?

You are calling Delhomme a more accurate passer than McNabb??? I know McNabb has struggled with inconsistencies but there is no way in hell you can call him a more accurate passer than McNabb.

Do stats show how many balls get thrown to the ground or not on the numbers…..maybe it shows how many catches had to be caught behind the receiver. you actully have to watch the film bro.

what??

Are you suggesting that the Eagles had better receivers than Carolina?? I for one know that McNabb has struggled with inconsistencies but there is no way that you can call Jake Delhomme a more accurate passer even based on balls thrown behind receivers. If that were the case, the only logic is you have to base this on is that Philly had receivers that could adjust to McNabb’s arrant throws and make his stats look better. I for one think that our receivers did him an injustice by dropping catchable balls. St

By keeping it real...

you mean calling our QB out and critizing our FO’s choices in the draft, bro?? I’m with you on the whole number 5 isn’t very accurate but he is an elite level QB who shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Jake Delhomme.

by Iggles Fan 4 Life on Apr 27, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm talking about our draft

5 was brough out because i yophillybro brought out S.Smith in comparison to Macklin. So i used the QB that was throwing for S.Smith. Read the comments we made to each other and you can understand…… i would tell you the whole story but toooooo many comments were made. lol

Welcome to the "Green Side".................

by Ewizzy21 on Apr 27, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've been following the entire post

I know why 5 was brought out. My point is that you are worried about McNabb’s inability to get Maclin the ball in stride when you feel that Delhomme has no problem doing that. McNabb will not have an issue getting the ball to a receiver when they run the route correctly. Maclin is a MUCH better route runner and a deep threat than NIcks. Nicks would not have been a good fit for our O and we should be happy he fell to us.

by Iggles Fan 4 Life on Apr 27, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree Macklin is not a better route runner because of the system he played in .Miz play a spread offense and he might take a couple slants to the house but that doesn’t make him a good route runner…….. i give him playmaker.

I’ve gotta agree in principal with Ewizzy here… I just think he chose a poor comparison in Delhomme, where the statistics just don’t support the position. Here’s the deal; McNabb is NOT the prototypical WC quarterback, and although his completion % is sufficient, it is in no way outstanding. If Ewizzy compared McNabb to someone like Drew Brees, the comparison would have been a little more valid. McNabb has a tendency to rush and throw flatfooted, which inturn result in inaccuracies (usually the ball hitting the gound 5 yards short).

However, the one thing McNabb DOES have that most WC QBs don’t is the ability to go vertical. The problem with the current team is that we’re missing that WR to exploit this threat. THAT’S precisely why we added Maclin instead of Nicks, Barden, or anyone else. I guarantee Maclin will be the vertical threat, Jackson our top WR and Curtis will mostly have the underneath owned.

"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel

by foos05 on Apr 27, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

My contention is that Ewizzy didnt make the comparison to Brees. He was suggesting that Delhomme was more accurate. I noted twice that I agree McNabb has some inconsistences.

+1

Brees is a brilliant QB. yophillybro is comparing Smith to Maclin because you didnt agree with taking Maclin. Thats the whole basis of this conversation. You arguement was that McNabb couldnt hit him in stride. McNabb can and will do that all year long.

by Iggles Fan 4 Life on Apr 27, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Finally some good anaylsis

Maclin was the perfect pick for us because he gives something that fits McNabb’s strengths, which Curtis, Avant and baskett don’t give us. Maclin would have been a terrible choice for the Giants, because Manning can’t throw a good deep ball.

manning has a beautiful deep ball

He’s got some inconsistency issues too, but that guy throws a gorgeous, spot on deep ball. If Maclin was there for the Giants at 29, they grab him over Nicks in a heartbeat. Part of the reason we traded up to 19 was to prevent the Giants trading up to grab Maclin.

Some reports:

ESPN:
“He has the arm strength to attack all levels in the passing game and does an effective job of going through his progressions. He has good accuracy in the short and intermediate areas in the passing game, along with certain downfield throws.”

Sportsnet:
“Outstanding pocket presence. Has a quick release and can move to avoid the rush. Throws a great deep ball. Decent accuracy and touch on shorter passes. Has become more of a playmaker when improvising.”

Bleacher Report:
“Throughout his tenure in the NFL, Eli has demonstrated a knack for throwing the deep ball with both velocity as well as accuracy. However, he does need to stride forward with his legs in order to attain his maximum velocity, thereby limiting his arm strength rating by one grade.”

I was stunned by the extension too

Delhomme is keeping that team from being really great. He’s an okay manager, but by no means more accurate than McNabb. McNabb is better than Delhomme in every way, and Carolina fans will tell us that themselves. I completely agree that that extension was silly.

You're succumbing to a famous psychological problem

It’s called positive reinforcement. You look for something, see it, and even if it happens extremely rarely the instance sticks out in your mind. It’s a famous psychological problem, one of the first analyzed, and it also deals with things like the economy. You see what you expect and assume it’s the norm, but statistics show it’s the exception.

Delhomme fans will think he has another problem or something, that maybe he leads receivers TOO much (resulting in more INTs) or overthrows a lot or also underthrows. The reality is that McNabb hits his target 70% of the time, the target catches it 60-odd% of the time, and that’s exceptionally good. Not the best, but very, very good.

When he does miss, it’s because the ball is uncatchable for everyone — partially the reason he throws so few INTs. But, mostly, it’s because he’s incredibly smart and rarely makes stupid throws.

maclin: 6’1" 200 pounds
boldin: 6’1" 217 pounds
jackson: 5’10" 175 pounds

which of those are more similar? why does every go apeshit for boldin and see him as a bigtime redzone weapon, and then maclin, who is the same height, isn’t big enough to catch the jump ball? I realize maclin is lighter, but he can put on some weight still.

Arizona wasn't trading Bolding. They wanted a second and considerations/

I bet the consideration was Asante or something silly to kill the conversation. They just put that whole trade talk thing together to make Boldin feel better.

I wanted to point something out. Eagles know more than us.

Going into the draft.

I wanted T, Ebben Britton (2nd rounder), we got All pro Peters instead.
(Eagles got may more than I expected.)

I wanted RB, Moreno, we got comparible back (No unkown person) McCoy.

I wanted TE Coffman, we got comparible TE in Ingram.

I didn’t even ask for a WR, but we got one of the best in the draft.

If you had told me that drafted (or aquired)
21. McCoy
28. Peters
53. Ingram
3rd. Macho Harris
obtained a 3rd rounder next year, and a bunch of 5th rounders. And aquired Ellis Hobbs.
5th Brandon Gibons
5th Topou,
6th Moises Fokoa
7th Any stiff

I would have given that a B grade, and would have been happy.

But we got a true number 1 receiver while at it. That is crazy. We go lucky this year. all this possible because Al Davis is a moron. Thanks all, if you would have selected Crabtree, Maclin would have went to SF, and we would have either traded down or selected either Brown or McCoy in the first.

This draft was crazy good.

DRAFT PICKS OVERATED?

I would like to say I’m estatic on the quality of our picks. However if I had to find fault in them. I’d say we got quality guys who are very similar to the stars we already have. McCoy is a Jr Westbrook. Maclin is a speedy short receiver like D. Jackson. I would be more satisfies if we got a taller WR of a more physical RB to compliment our existing guy. Maybe it will pay off having spare stars. Although I will say our new TE Ingram was a bargain. Can’t beleive he was available that late in the draft.
As far as improving our WR’s I think we suceeded. However we could go out and sign another veteran free-agent like Marvin Harrison. He’s from Philly so it would make it easier for him to make his court dates. We need a proven winner to mentor our WR’s. I’d be ll for a WR like DJ Hackett or some other #2 WR free agent. We got the cap room. Hell trade next years 1st round pick for Boldin. We need that tall pysical. The Steelers success shows that Hine Ward-like WR are required!

by Fly Eagles Fly 69 on Apr 27, 2009 7:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Most people find a true ‘complement’ RB to be unimportant. Its more important to have two good players as opposed to two different styles. A lot of Eagles fans (and apparently the front office) value that speed and pass catching ability that Westbrook uses in our system. If you get a power runner who can’t do those things, the game becomes predictable when he’s on the field, and in the case of an injry we can no longer run our normal offense.

I could understand people potentially wanting a taller or physical WR, but don’t pretend that Boldin is both or assume that he was even available. Maclin is over 6 feet, and is maybe a 1/4 inch shorter than Boldin.

I don’t know who you feel about our WRs, but those two guys you mentioned might not even make the team. Harrison would be like a 5th WR at best, and would be a glorified WR coach on the roster. Not saying his knowledge wouldn’t help, but as far as a player, he’d barely help us if at all.

by FredEx on Apr 27, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Some heights/Weights

DJ Hackett:
6’2 / 208

Anquan Boldin:
6’1 / 217

Marvin Harrison:
6’0 / 185

DeSean Jackson:
5’10 / 175

Jeremy Maclin:
6’1 / 200

He’s basically the same size as DJ Hackett. An inch shorter, a few pounds lighter as a rookie coming in (every WR gains muscle weight in the NFL, so that difference won’t exist soon). He’s the same height and about 15 pounds lighter than Boldin, most of which he’ll make up within a year.

The Jackson comp really doesn’t hold.

The comps that do?

Reggie Wayne:
6’0 / 198

Roddy White:
6’0 / 208

I really like our draft

I have to say that I am more excited over this draft than any other Eagles draft in recent memory. I really love the fact that we go into next year with an extra 3 and 5.

That said the real proof in the pudding is when these guys get on the field. For that reason I’m going into the season cautiously optimistic. This team has the pieces in place to be real good. Now it’s time to execute.
