The 2009 Roster, Post Draft

Ignoring the likely camp fodder ... 62 players the Eagles have drafted, traded for, or spent significant amounts on in Free Agency ...

QB (3) - McNabb, Kolb, Feeley

RB (3) - Westbrook, Booker, McCoy

FB (2) - Eckel, Weaver

TE (3) - Celek, Schobel, Ingram

WR (7) - Jackson, Curtis, Brown, Avant, Baskett, Maclin, Gibson

T (5) - Andrews, Peters, Dunlap, Justice, Tupou

G (6) - Herremanns, Andrews, Jean-Gilles, McGlynn, Gibson, Fanaika

C (2) - Jackson, Cole

ST (3) - Akers, Rocca, Dorenbos

DT (4) - Patterson, Bunkley, Laws, Klecko

DE (6) - Cole, Thomas, Howard, Smith, Clemmons, Abiamiri

LB (8) - Gocong, Bradley, Jordan, Gaithers, Mays, Daniels, White, Fouko

S (4) - Mikell, Demps, Jones, Baker

CB (6) - Brown, Samuel, Hanson, Hobbs, Ikegwuono, Harris

Nine decent players aren't making this team.  Competition for roster is obviously at WR (-1 or 2), CB (-1 or 2), G/T (-3 or 4), LB (-1 or 2), and maybe DE and FB (0 or -1).  Everybody else is pretty much set unless they slip up and let a camp body past them on the depth chart.

Haha...

That’s kind of why I have him there.

I’m not going to pretend that I’ve watched a ton of Wisconsin games and know Ikegwuonu inside and out, but for the Eagles to trade for Ellis Hobbs and draft Macho Harris, I gotta question how comfortable they are with him… and I’m not so sure that bringing in these extra corners is 100% related to Sheldon Brown.

no chance hobbs is here only to return kicks. maclin is all over that this yr like djax was last yr…..he’ll work his way in as the season goes on….so i highly doubt we just traded 2 5’s for a returner/

Even if they make Macho a safety, Ikegwuonu isn’t necessarily safe.

you need stats if someone says explain or support

no one here asked for stats bout macho being too slow because he is, thats why he played a hybrid safety/corner at tech, and excelled at it

i agree sheldon plays one more year and gets traded, like lito, but seriously, back up what you say and people might actually start to take u seriously

again jack.

Performance is key. You can make a case for Hobbs and Hanson since we have seen them play, etc. But Jack has never played a down in the NFL. Much like everyone drafted today and yesterday, all we have is college highlights and every type of “stats” possible for each player. Top 10 talent does not necessarily equal success. I agree Macho doesn’t fit a corner mold. Hobbs did a decent job at NE and he was at his best when he played with Asante. I agree, not better than Sheldon but let’s give him a chance and see where he goes. I agree with you that I highly doubt we’d cut Jack without seeing him in action after investing in him.

why do you need stats?

so you don’t get embarassed like you did earlier today when you said….

fuck casey
hes slow .. we dont need no more fuckin celeks!! jesus .. ingram was the most athletic te in this draft .. we stole him .. i wanted him in round 3 .. he lasted another 50 picks! what a draft .. the last pick kinda pissed me off with duke robinson sitting there. . but owell

to which someone pointed out to you that…

Casey’s slow?
I like the pick Jack, but you need to check your facts. Casey’s times in the 40 yard dash and the 20 yard shuffle were better than Ingram’s. He also did 28 bench presses to Ingram’s 21.

then you just discredited the pure fact that casey was faster in every single way at the combine than ingram. sorry, but you can’t just say “that doesn’t matter because i don’t think it does”. that doesn’t make for a good argument….that’s why no one is listening to you right now. instead of arguing with facts, you’re saying “i’m right because i am, you’re wrong because the stats you show don’t matter”.

by eagleyosh on Apr 27, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well actually everyone is listening to him haha… I mean when you really like a guy you really like a guy but in jack is better case… Some of the things he says are just laughable…. Ill admit when we drafted Desean and Demps i didnt care what anyone said i knew they were gonna be stars…oh shit i was right… yet to be seen with Demps but .. I could argue with anyone he will be our starter and be a solid one at that and he hasnt played in the starting role…but thats how much i like him .. soooo from that standpoint i can see why jack is like that but most of the things he says are not valid

DeSEAN JACKSON THE 10NE

by TheILLadeph on Apr 27, 2009 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i could see why you'd argue for one player

relentlessly, and not let anyone say you’re wrong just because that’s what you believe. But he doesn’t offer any sort of backup for anything he says ever, and he makes claims about everything. at some point, you have to provide backup.

For example…I’m sure Darwin really believed he was right about evolution, but no one else did. To combat this, he didn’t say “well, you’re wrong, I’m right. This is definitely what happened, how could you say anything else?” No…he provided data that lead to his conclusion, and now it’s taught in schools.

Other more recent examples…who the hell would believe that the earth is getting warmer because we burn gas? No one. So the scientists who really believed that didn’t go, “no, the earth is warming. you’ve got to be kidding if you don’t think it is. it’s common sense”. They showed evidence supporting their claim.

Point is, say whatever you want. But if you’re gonna say it, back it up at some point, and someone will believe you. I can understand believing something just because it’s what you believe, and some things don’t require an explanation, but I would appreciate it if he actually took some time to say why he thinks what he does besides repeating his opinion over and over. if he did, at some point I might actually change my mind about something. Instead, I’ll provide evidence for my point, he’ll call me an idiot, and then nothing will change.

by eagleyosh on Apr 27, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well yeah ...

… Jackassante sucks at arguing.

But he’s an All-Pro at stoking the fires and getting the conversation going.

And we’ve both seen enough to know that he just wants to be heard. I don’t think it matters to him if his point is well fleshed-out or accepted or logical or liked. He doesn’t seem care about being respected, as long as people appear to be listening.

howard and abiamiri both got ample time at DT last year

also, it’s not exactly hard to find a fill in DT, nor is it hard to keep a pair of them on the practice squad.

3 DTs won’t be an issue, though i’d still bet klecko would make the roster.

No chance ...

… they go 3 DTs, variables.

Howard’s ability to play there definitely gives them some flexibility, but going with three serious DTs on a roster … that’s a risk like building a roster without a fullback. One injury can make you seriously regret it.

Anyway, it should be a fun bunch of battles to watch. I think they keep 5 DEs instead of 6 before they keep just 3 DTs instead of 4 … or maybe 4 of each plus Howard.

I guess this is the stuff we’ll have to talk about all offseason, so lets not blow it on the first night.

The other ones

are all vital to the team in one way or another.

Hobbs, if he was to be the 4th CB, would be the primary KOR. And he’s a weapon back there, he took three to the house last year, didn’t he? Maybe that’s a function of disciplined blocking, but I suspect he has something to do with it

I'd rather play Sheldon

than Hobbs at CB, but the Patriots were 18-1 with Hobbs starting, so I think a talented team can win with him. He’s not exactly a sieve.

And honestly, if our boy Samuel clutches that INT, Hobbs never gets beat for the GW TD, and everyone in Pats land has happy thoughts about awesome Ellis Hobbs.

I love him for KOR first, FWIW.

lol haha no doubt

i mean dont get me wrong i was on my high horse and still am about desean before he played in the nfl but at least my horse is riding tall … but if i was in his shoes, a college player i love that i hope the best for in the nfl and believe is better than others i would probably be in the same position if deseans season was bad or was coming off a college injury as well … so i dont blame him but i agree completely i could of recalled a few situations like this … digging a grave and then no valid response … also ( “JIBTA” i dub his new name ) tends to not find factual evidence to support his case which hurts his image and argument … but dont get me wrong im sure he could probably find some college stats to compare against hobbs persay or someone else … its not hard to find a good side in everyone and i for one think jack will be an good cb not amazing but good … and i cant retract my statement (which i would love to replace with amazing cb) until the kid can get some pads on and prove it … Asante is proven so right now and one of the best in the league with stats to back it … jack is nothing until he gets out there and makes some plays so i just chuckle inside every time i hear asante isn’t better … i like to use what i call the “madden factor” … go pop in madden and see the overall of the two and that should be pretty dam close if not off in the attributes range … and that should deaden whos better at this point … i would love for this to have more essence 2 years down the line and comparing jacks production …

Well you gotta think.

Players excell when they are in the right system. Who is to say that Hobbs won’t?

Even though I agree that Hall is overrated, he played absolutely terrible in Oakland more because he did not fit with the defensive system not because he was absolute crap. (lol again regardless of personal opinion. I never liked him)

an Andrew sighting. Hello, again.

i think our offseason brings more moves. With Sheldons contract BS and us trading for Hobbs, something is up.
Perhaps i am wrong, i dont get the feeling that we are completely done yet. Some of these guys may be packaged up and sent off. I say Eckel and Justice are the best trade bait.
Brown will end up somewhere, but i dont know that we get him sent off. He should be cut.
As the Eagles always do, they’ll IR a guy or 2 from this list.

by GreenInBaltimore on Apr 26, 2009 10:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Brandon Gibson, Paul Fanaika, and Moise Fouku are our IR candidates. I’m thinking Eckel and Justice have no trade value whatsoever. However, Sheldon Brown would bring back some good value, and I think there could be interest in Reggie Brown as well. Last season was terrible, but he’s had a few nice seasons – Remember… the Pats gave us a 5 for Greg Lewis.

Agree about Brown

wasn’t he trying to play through an injury too?

I hate how guys have an off year and they go from up-and-coming to done. F that. Michael Clayton is still eating off that first 1,000-yard season with the Bucs. Reggie Williams did a lot less for a lot longer than Reggie Brown and remained employed. (well maybe not a lot, but you get the pic)

If Brown can’t play for us, it doesn’t mean he can’t play.

Shoot, Matt Ware and Ryan Moats are still in the NFL.

Schobel

If I had any disappointment whatsoever with this offseason (besides the obvious, see my name) it is that we did not do an adequate job of upgrading the TE position. I am a Celek fan. I just don’t think he is good enough to be the ONLY TE on this roster. I am excited about Ingram but I think he is a prospect. I think he takes some time to develop into what we hope he can be. Plus, one of his weaknesses is his desire and ability to block. While the tackle changes will help with pass protection, it does not matter how good your tackles are when the defense brings extra guys off the edge and your TEs cannot block. Then we have Schobel. The guy is even horrible on special teams. Here is hoping one of those trades (Brown/Brown) can get us a decent TE, even if they are just a blocking TE.

Eagles Camp Fodder on the 53 Man Roster

Sean Morey was a street free agent camp body. He is the one success from this source.

Robert Redd, on the 2005 roster, for what, a day?

Andy Thorn made an NFL roster, briefly, on some other team. Jeremy Cain was briefly with the Titans.

Roster projection

I’ll do that once they sign their undrafted free agents (at least one undrafted guy has made the team every year most years), and we see a little bit of practices and training camp and get a feel for who can play and who can’t. Right now, its not obvious who is getting cut. I especially think the people cheering for Reggie Brown’s departure are being exceedingly premature. Brown >> Baskett and Avant.

My Favorite aspect of the post-draft roster

Virtually the entire team is 28 or younger. Football is not quite as obsessed with prime ages as baseball, but salary-conscious teams like the Eagles are a little age-obsessed.

According to Bye, Dawk’s thread on this a few weeks back, everyone’s 28 or younger, except:
Westbrook 29
McNabb 32
Curtis 30
Howard 32

Four guys we’ll make exceptions for based on their ability or produce still. Howard might not be a lock, but his DE/DT versatility could save them a roster spot in what could be a tight cutdown day.

I think the age factor has been underplayed so far in draft reaction. This team is set up for now and for the near future (assuming Kolb is any good) at every position.

Howard?

Howard had 10 sacks last year coming off the bench. Didn’t that lead the team?

Kearse skidded by on a lot less for three years as a starter.

Akers and Rocca are also over 30. I think AJ might be close too.
