Awesome draft!!!
I think we all had our hearts ripped out a little bit when Moreno was taken at #12 by the Denver Broncos (luckily, I think Anuj survived the news), but I'm trying to find a glaring weakness in this team right now and I can't!
1. After the season was over we all agreed our biggest question was at the Tackle posistion. We responded by getting a pro bowl LT and potentially a pro bowler RT in Stacy Andrews. Couple that with our All Pro tackle Shawn Andrews is going to hopefully be back in the mix too.
Our offensive line potentially is one of the best in the NFL on paper
Addressed? Upgraded? CHECK!!!
2. Our next biggest concern was RB. We got a play makeing speedster in McCoy and for the first time in the Reid era we drafted a RB higher than the 3rd round
RB situation Addressed? CHECK!
3. With L.J. Smith leaving for the Ravens we had a hole at the TE posistion, so we went out and drafted arguably the most athletic TE's out there in Cornelius Ingram. Sure, his blocking his raw, but his play making ability makes this pick super rewarding. Plus, he was projected to go a bit higher if it weren't for his ACL injury.
Get another TE? CHECK!
4. Sheldon Brown tries to play hard ball.
We went out and got a decent corner in Ellis Hobbs (Oh, he's also a perenial kick returner (over 28 yards per return last year).
5. We needed more fire power or needed to give McNabb more weapons.
We got a super talented WR in Maclin who was projected to go in the top 10 (Thanks a lot Al Davis!)
Upgraded fire power: CHECK!
To top this great draft off we also loaded up on 2 draft picks next year (one of them a 3rd rounder) Oh, and Lito could give us another 2nd rounder also.
How can anyone be upset? There's nothing we didn't accomplish and according to rumors we could also get another play making TE in Tony Scheffler.
A+

Agreed in every way.
What a haul. The ways in which I could be happier are minimal.

Best draft/offseason the eagles have had in a long time. So far, this trumps the 04 season by a mile. I hope it plays out that way this season and we end up with the ring we so desperatley deserve!!!

MACLINNNNNNNNNN
Real happy about the draft. I hope we pick up a kicker somewhere along the way though. I expect Akers to have a good season but he’s not going to be here forever.

I couldn’t be happier with the draft. I can’t understand why any Eagles fan could be upset with what we did in the first two rounds at the very least. Getting
I also have to say that it was difficult yesterday sitting in the hospital with my wife and our newborn daughter trying to check the draft on my cell phone without the wife noticing. I’m just that bad about the draft. Joked with my wife that with the Phillies sweeping the Marlins (and I had tickets to Friday’s game and today’s game, oh well), the 76ers winning on Friday and the draft the Eagles had, the world is smiling on her.
(yes, that was a partial brag post and a partial real reply)

er… “getting Hobbs was a steal for 2 5th rounders and he’s gonna be a great addition to this team… he made a great team with Asante back when they were both with New England”

the mvp of the baby delivery… checking the eagles draft picks on his mobile phone while hgis wife is having a baby, he’s outside high-fiving while his wife is in labor, then when his daughter’s born he screams cause the eagles got maclin… ok it’s probably a bit over emphasized, but it would make a great commercial

no arguments here....
Eagle had a GREAT draft. No Moreno was dissapointed but when Maclin fell and I started reading about how good he was I knew we got a steal…and then we got arguably the 3rd or 4th best RB in the draft ? SWEET.
Top it off with the Ingram and you have one great draft. Does anyone know if Ingram is fully healed from that ACL ?

not so sure about the maclin pick.
all in all it seems good, but i think there are better players than maclin there for us. we already have a pretty good small fast receiver in jackson. i do like that he can come in and return kicks. i would of rather had nicks or britt. i don’t like the prospect of relying on baskett a red zone threat. hopefully avant will fight for the #3 spot this year.

Name a better player
Maclin was rated the 7th or 8th best player in the entire draft, and he fell to 19. Not because he isn’t the 7th or 8th best player going in, but because the Raiders fell in love with a 0.05 difference in 40 speed, and ignored the differences in hands, physicality, and route running that made Maclin far superior to Heyward-Bey according to scouts. Maclin’s routes need work, but he was rated as the best YAC WR in the draft (even ahead of Crabtree), which is exactly what the Eagles need in their WRs. Hands can be taught to some degree, so can route running.
And it’s not even as though he’s bad at either of those things. His hands are already rated as above-average-to-good. His route running was good too, except that his offensive system didn’t require very many routes — lots of slants and posts. Which is similar to the WCO. What he learned he excelled at, so there’s no reason to think he won’t be able to do the same with a double-move. He’s just about as fast as Desean Jackson, and just about as big as Anquan Boldin, with similar physicality in gameplay albeit not quite as much. He’s basically a hybrid of the two, and that’s something I am exceptionally excited to see in an Eagles WR.
If he turned out to be Kevin Curtis, I’d be ecstatic, but his ceiling is much, much higher. Think Roddy White.

I thought that too
but I think Maclin is faster than Wayne, with worse hands and route-running, but more physicality. Slightly more Roddy White, although I think those two are both pretty similar receivers.
I’d accept a Wayne comp with open arms. Both, I think, are applicable as ceilings for Maclin
by Alon on Apr 27, 2009 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maclin's ceiling is totally ridiculous
What he logically ends up as is a Roddy White-lite. What his potential…is a Jeremy Maclin.
Missouri used Maclin a lot like the Gators used Harvin. The difference is, of course, that Maclin is a slightly more physical type with some speed and finesse to go with the package, while Harvin is a finesse type with very little physicality. One’s a sprinter, and one’s a football player.
We got the football player. This kid’s going to be something special.

I think that the best part about this draft for us is
We got players at a position of need and got great value for them.
Macklin should have been top 10 but we got him at 21
McCoy could have been late first to early second we got him at 53
Ingram could have been a 2nd to 3rd round pick we got him in the 5th
and even every other player was for the most part a round or two later than projected.
by homestar2281 on Apr 26, 2009 8:42 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
the truth is that we have no idea.
Winston Justice was also seen to be a great value pick. At this point, he doesn’t seem to be working out. I’m cautiously optimistic about the draft and the off-season, but there remains a lot of uncertainty. Only time will tell.

Just judging their drafting, though, not necessarily the pan out, the Birds had a very nice two days.

Excellent!
Yes guys, I’m alive. My friends learned a new curse word or two, but overall, i am really happy how our draft turned out. We might not have to hear our need at WR for a long time now. We got a strong Red Zone threat in Ingram. But, I do beg to differ when Joe says he cannot find any weakness. Blocking. Yes, we probably have one of the best lines in the NFL, but we still lack a quality blocking TE. Also, until McCoy can learn to block properly, i wont be 100% solid on him. As a runningback, yes, and a dual threat, yes, as a future replacement for Westy? No, not until he can sharpen him blocking.

He's willing
and, like Westbrook, wasn’t exactly a blocking specialist coming out of college. But Westbrook was willing, and so is McCoy. Hopefully the comparisons will continue.
by Alon on Apr 26, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mostly agreed
If Westbrook can stay healthy, McCoy only has to be a willing blocker for now. I do agree that it is far too early to anoint him a Westbrook successor. At the same time, I am very excited to nab him late in the 2nd round and think he will be a good fit and another playmaker in this system, at the very least.
Where I am 100% in agreement with you is regarding TE. It is the only flaw I can find in this offseason. We cannot go into another season with a guy with no business in the NFL playing an important role (2nd TE). Schobel is still that guy right now as Ingram is probably a year away from significant playing time, assuming he does pan out. So that is an area that still needs to be addressed, even if we only find a blocking TE.

because Andy loved to run double tights, even when Stephen Spach was his second option, I agree that Weaver can potentially help a LOT in this department.

can someone put together a comparison of Maclin & Desean
differences, similarities, and how they can complement each other in the eagles offense type of post
by sports00fan00 on Apr 26, 2009 10:15 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
they are not similar
maclin is bigger and more explosive .. he doesnt run the best routes .. but he finds ways to make plays with the ball in his hands .. he projects to be a reggie wayne type .. a top tier wr ..
jackson is smaller .. runs better routes but isnt as explosive .. he is still a threat with the ball .. but he projects as a more athletic issac bruce .. so the main differce is maclin is bigger and more explosive .. d jax will be a good wr for awhile but he will never be a number one .. maclin could be a number one .. thats the main differnce .. they arnt very similar other than the fact that they both play wr and they are good with the ball in their hands

You can't say tha tabout jackson
He had a very prolific rookie year and already you’re saying he can’t be a top tier player in the NFL…Very unfair. Also, I’m not sure which D jackson youre watching but the kid is real damn explosive lol
I think the biggest difference is route running and size. Jackson is a good route runner, Maclin is a little raw, but he’s got more size.. Both have excellent vision.l

while i agree with most of your description… DeSean not being explosive or a #1? are you kidding me? What the heck was his rookie season then if it wasn’t explosive?

Another comparison
Jackson vs. Maclin:
Jackson is faster
Jackson runs better routes
Maclin is bigger
Maclin is more physical
Maclin is still blazing fast
Similarities:
Both create huge YAC (yards after catch)
Both are exceptionally fast
Both have exceptional vision
Both are extremely agile
Both use their hands to catch, and have good hands
I think the more athletic Isaac Bruce comp can hold for Jackson, or a less physical Steve Smith. He has potential to be #1, I differ from Jack there. I don’t think he has the potential to be a top 5 take-over-games a la Fitzgerald type. It’s not that he won’t rack up the stats, because he will, but he can’t just go outleap a defender or outmuscle a CB on every play, he’s more about creating separation and agility and that’s harder to dominate outright with. Then again, CBs have a very tough time with his type of receiver. I’d expect his career to have a ton of yards, but he’ll I do not think it likely that he will be a guy that hauls in 15 TDs in a year. Once he gets hit, he’s probably going down relatively quickly (as opposed to a T.O. type who drags defenders) — good thing he’s so hard to hit.
Maclin, on the other hand, does have the 15 TDs/yr potential. I called him Roddy White esque earlier this thread, another comp dropped was Reggie Wayne. I think he runs worse routes and doesn’t have as good hands as does Wayne, but is faster with more physicality and agility, so that’s why I picked White. However, that’s really nitpicking, and the ceiling of Wayne & White are both very legitimate. Maybe somewhere in between. He’ll enter and be a dynamic deep threat right away because he has the ability to outjump/muscle DBs and the speed to outrun them, and if he can learn the intricacies of WCO route running he could be a top 10 WR annually and the type of WR that can dominate games.
Jackson is also more likely to reach his potential, if for no other reason than he had such a great year last year that we know he can hold up to NFL rigors. Maclin probably is a bit less likely to reach his, but if he goes out and has a Jackson-esque rookie year (unlikely… let’s not be too tough on the kid — after all, Jackson is the exception for rookie WRs, not the norm), then I think his limit is the sky and he has a great chance of reaching it. If he performs solidly (25+ catches? don’t want to put a # on it…)… if he comes on strongly at the end of the year, makes a big play here and there, and generally does things that get his name in the paper in good ways, I’d still be extremely optimistic about his potential.

I really like this review, but you downgrade DeSean a little too much. The ceiling for DeSean is still very high and I think that he has loads more to grow. We can still expect big things from him

I'd love to see a comparison ...
… of the Eagles fans general attitudes now, vs. the attitudes the first few days of free agency.
People went from calling it a sad day for the franchise to the best draft/offseason ever.
Truth is probably somewhere in between, but I think the big thing is we replenished our roster while getting much younger overall. We may lose a little in leadership and cohesiveness, and those are things I think allowed some of our less-talented teams to play a little above their heads. This team now has the raw talent, and needs to get familiar with the system and each other, and stay healthy, and they have a great shot at doing the damn thang.
I think next major order of business, once Scheffler and Sheldon are resolved (or resolved to have no resolution) is to start thinking about extending some of our young’uns.
And yes, I realize this is the same stuff that got us in the Sheldon mess …

Bench Sheldon
If we lose an extra game, whatever. We need to show these guys that when we show faith in them and guarantee their comfort for the rest of their lives, we expect them to honor at least half the new contract without complaining.
I think we have some great leaders, I think you’ll see Howard as more vocal, as well as Asante & Mikell & Bradley. I also have a hunch that Demps will emerge as a vocal leader on the team, judging from what he said at draft time and since then. He’s a smart guy, and he obviously plays with a lot of passion. No one has the mold of BDawk’s leadership, but Demps has got a good personality on him I think.

you're attributing way too much altruism to the eagles there.
We need to show these guys that when we show faith in them and guarantee their comfort for the rest of their lives, we expect them to honor at least half the new contract without complaining.
you do realize what happens when a player turns down the eagles offer, right? take a look at what happened with michael lewis or omar gaither after they turned down the eagles attemp to “guarantee their comfort for the rest of their lives.” both of them lost their starting jobs a week after turning down the eagles’ advances.
it pisses me off what sheldon is doing, but i’m not gonna get on him for it.
brian mccann: derek lowe's got the best slider i've ever seen
john smoltz: yeah? and josh bard's the best catcher i've ever thrown to.
