Pitt fan here, trust me, Shady McCoy is a stud

I've been browsing some of your comments,..I gotta tell you,...you guys got an absolute steal. It seems some of you think he'll only contribute marginally. McCoy will be a stud RB, trust me. He had a bad pro day, but he's simply a play maker and his football instincts are out of this world.

I've said this before, if he gets enough touches, he can be this year's Chris Johnson. He's also got great hands and an explosive first step, so he can do a lot of damage with screen passes.

You guys got a good one. Enjoy.

Couldn't agree more

Check out the post I did earlier this week, http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2009/4/20/846151/if-birds-pass-on-rb-in-1st-then

Simply stated, he makes plays and is an exceptional receiver. Just a brief description of his talent is as a freshman against Michigan State on the road he rushed for 180 yards and single-handedly kept Pitt in the game running the ball from the wildcat formation.

My main issues...

My main three issues…1) ball protection, dude does not shift hands as he runs to the outside; 2) size…dude is 5’10" in platform shoes, and may have similar durability issues as Westbrook with the pounding; 3) pass blocking…I didn’t see any blocking tools in the reels I saw, he actually looked pretty schooled on pass blocking, very much unlike Westbrook…and I guess 4) his agent is Drew Rosenhaus.

But I’m hearing he’s a stud otherwise…he seems flashy and a good ticket seller, along with being somewhat of a hometown boy…so I’m hopeful…

he’s also a genuinely nice kid. Very easy to root for. Thats one thing that makes me a proud Pitt alum,…we don’t produce a ton of NFL stars but we produce quality kids. Larry Fitzgerald, Darrelle Revis, Shady McCoy, Jeff Otah.

Compare that with the jail house called WVU,..giving us Pacman Jones and Chris Henry.

He's not a complete back right now...

I’ll give you that. What does height matter for an RB? Emmitt Smith is 5-9, LT is 5-10. And he goes about 210. The ball handling thing is something he needs to work on. And I don’t think he was asked to block much in college. But those things are part coaching and practice. You can’t teach the vision and running ability he has. Also, people forget McCoy went to a year of prep school, so he’s three years out of high school. I think he will fit nicely into the offense.

All

All good points…although I think he is about 15-20 lbs lighter than those guys…agree that he’s not complete…but he’s a late second rounder, so you wouldn’t expect him to be…but large upside, so I like the pick…I was just hoping for a bigger back for the backfield…

And...

And I like the fact that both of our picks are underclassmen…young enough to teach and keep around a long time…

What does height matter?

If anything he’s ideal height. Guys that are tall don’t last too long.

I don't always get excited about these things ...

… but his highlight tape is pretty sick:

Honestly, I’m not gonna sit here and overanalyze his technique or anything like that. I hope he can contribute this year, that’s all I’ll say.

Oh, and BTW, Lo Booker … you’ve been put on notice.

Why is he called Shady though?

I’m not familiar with that story. Could go either way, i guess.

Its been his nickname since childhood. Apparently when he was little he had mood swings, so his mom called him Shady and it stuck.

I went to Pitt

and watched him live many times. I was unimpressed and I thought he was over hyped. He isn’t as fast or elusive as he thinks and I don’t think he has the toughness westbrook shows. At Pitt wannstedt pretty much blew mccoy and compared him to dorsett so we’ll see.
