The Hindsight Files ...
Taking an opportunity to look at mock drafts from semi-respected (or better) sources like Rick Gosselin of DMN, SI.com, NFL N, et. al., there is no shortage of "experts" who had the Raiders taking Maclin at 7 instead of Heyward-Bey.
There are also a few, including Don Banks of SI.com and Peter King, who thought the Eagles wouldn't have been crazy to take McCoy at 21 overall.
I suspect the Eagles will mostly be either not mentioned at all or grouped with Day 1's draft winners or high grades when those columns come out, but if anyone wants a place to pat the Eagles on the back for getting with picks No. 19, 53 and 195 players that would have apparently been perfectly reasonable to take at Nos. 7 and 21, here's your space.
I think it would be most interesting to look back at what people had to say about Maclin and McCoy before we knew they'd be Eagles.

Here's Gosselin ...
… and his thoughts on Maclin potentially going No. 7 to Oakland:
7. Oakland Raiders:
Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
Comment: Tim Brown was a Pro Bowl playmaker for a long time for the Raiders. Maclin is Tim Brown 20 years later. Of the four top wideouts on this draft board, Maclin will have the greatest impact as a rookie because of his return skills.
I’ll take half of Tim Brown and greatest impact as a rookie. Nice.

as far as maclin goes...
people have been complaining, but it makes no sense. We don’t know if he’ll be good, but we gave up virtually nothing (a 6th rounder) to get him. Also, a lot of people (including some schmucks on ESPN) said “why not just trade for bolding if you’re going to go WR number one?” Well…the answer is ten million dollars a year. I give the eagles credit for drafting a WR who can hopefully contribute shortly. He can replace Desean on punt returns (since DJ is our starter this season), and he is a bigger guy that jackson. Jackson is 5’10" 175 pounds vs Maclin 6’1" 200 lbs. Boldin, who wanted a hell of a lot of money (obviously, he’s a sure thing though) is 6’1" 217 lbs. I bet Maclin can put on a few pounds, making him only a little bit lighter but just as tall as Boldin. Good pick. This offseason, I thought the biggest needs for the birds were RB, tackle, fullback, and then WR mixed in with the rest. They filled the three things I saw as priority by the end of the first day of the draft. I give them a good grade this offseason.
And they still have
a third, four 5ths, a 6th and a 7th tomorrow. Plus trade chips like Reggie Brown, Winston Justice, et. al.
If they can come away from that with anything exciting, that’s gravy.
I thought their offseason needs were short yardage & red-zone production, and depth at RB and TE and T. And FS.
If Weaver and improved tackle play help on the goal line and in short yardage, and we get a TE tomorrow, we will have accomplished literally everything. Plus adding a return man to take burden of DJax & Demps. Plus got younger at T and FS. (I think Sean Jones could be a really good add even though he’s been long since overshadowed)
A lot to be excited about.

Maclin will thrive
I initially didn’t like the pick i assumed like a majority of people did that Pettigrew was the guy but a top 10 player dropped down to the Eagles range and it helped fill a need. This move up was totally worth it. I don’t understand why the ESPN analysts were so subdued about his pick. First off Boldin is not going to happen I hoped it would and wrote that i wished it would ahppen for a long time but it just won’t, second Maclin is built like boldin 15-17 pound lighter with return skills and flexibility/adaptability. Thirdly the ESPN analysts went ape shit over Hakeem Nicks and didnt understand the Maclin choice because Maclin wont be an endzone treat and Nicks will…huh They are the same height with 15 pds. going to Nicks so…I guess i just dont get it. The draft so far has gone well heres hoping the Eagles sign Coffman or Cook tomorrow and find a breakout star or two in the later rounds
Thinking about it...
I like the picks a lot. I initially hated the Maclin pick because all I knew about him was what the shitheads on ESPN said about im…but after reading some stuff about him online…he was a top 10 pick and generally considered the #2 WR in the entire draft. I called the Lesean pick and although hes not Moreno…hes one of the top 3 guys we needed (right there with Donald Brown and behind Knowshon) A great 1st day. Too bad the damn broncos took Richard Quinn…he was a MONSTER BLOCKER. Better than Pettigrew.
Jamon Meredith...
The Eagles need to move up and grab this guy. No idea how he slipped to the 5th round… Great character, great player.
I wish I could find better hindsight
but here’s NFLDraftCountdown’s best available players at the end of Day 1:
1. Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech
2. Shawn Nelson, TE, Southern Miss
3. Rashad Johnson, S, Alabama
4. Jared Cook, TE, South Carolina
5. Jamon Meredith, OT, South Carolina
6. Cornelius Ingram, TE, Florida
32. Victor Harris, CB, Virginia Tech
