Second Round live blog from the press pit
The first round is over and clocked in at 3 hours and 23 minutes, which is 10 minutes faster than year's first round. The second round is underway with some good players still on the board.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 8:01 PM EDT ] Great pick from Cincy there to grab Rey Maualuga. The Broncos trade a first round next year to Seattle straight up for a second rounder this year!
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 8:12 PM EDT ] The Pats let their pick expire and the very anti Pats crowd roared... only to find that New England also held the next pick so it really didn't matter.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 8:17 PM EDT ] A major run on DBs here in the early 2nd round. 5 DBs off the board in 10 picks
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 8:23 PM EDT ] Panthers get a really good value with Everette Brown this deep in the second. Many mocks had that guy as a top 15 pick. Shows what they know...
The energy has definitely died down a bit here as we've headed into the second round.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 8:26 PM EDT ] Roger Goodell just walked right by me, with his giant posse in tow.
The Dolphins just selected Pat White QB from WVU. Can you say "wildcat?"
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 8:27 PM EDT ] Looks like Carolina won't have a first round pick next year either. They traded it to the 49ers for a second round pick.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 8:30 PM EDT ] The NFL has a Navy guy announce the Giants second round pick, which is Clint Sintim. Good pick by the Giants.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 8:49 PM EDT ] TheSportsGuru and I are trying to figure out who the Broncos just picked. Awesome last name though, "McBath."
Good value for Max Unger there from Seattle.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 8:53 PM EDT ] Eagles coming up soon. Dallas, then the Browns then we're up with lots of TEs still on the board.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 8:57 PM EDT ] Dallas has missed their pick! It was just announced that they passed!
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 9:00 PM EDT ] It was just announced that Dallas has dealt their pick to Buffalo and the Bills have taken OG Levitre from Oregon St.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 9:00 PM EDT ] EAGLES ON THE CLOCK
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 9:35 PM EDT ] Every guy in the pit where the people who the picks up to the stage is wearing headphones... except for the Cowboy guy, whi is watching movies on his computer. The guy that was with him left.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 9:40 PM EDT ] Quote of the day goes to Tampa's new head coach Raheem Morris.
"You know, I made this statement the other day. If I had the Detroit Lions pick at No. 1, I might have taken Josh Freeman. I might have been fighting for him. Our owner is very excited, they haven't had an opportunity to be this excited for 15 years and they are really pumped up. They've got a chance for a franchise quarterback, man. That's our quarterback, to quote T.O." - Head Coach Raheem Morris on drafting Josh Freeman

Wow, I guess nobody is still here with you ...
… It is Saturday night after all. If I wasn’t at my desk at work, who knows where’d I be.
My question is do the Eagles stay put at 53, or use some of that ammo to move up. I’d love to know what they think of the players remaining on the board.
A couple first-round names, Rey Maualuga and Eben Britton, just went.

Love Maclin
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the Maclin pick. I just got caught up with the hype with Knowshon.

Rashad Jennings
6’1, 232 pounds | Liberty | Running back
Strengths: Looking at Jennings, the first thing that pops off the screen is his size. He’s a tall, powerful back who is hard for opponents to take down. Combine that with good athleticism, and Jennings has the makings of a solid rusher in the NFL. Jennings has also developed into a receiving option and increased his receptions every year. Has some speed to break long runs when he gets into the open field. Above average as a blocker.
Weaknesses: While Jennings certainly has power, he doesn’t always run like it. He doesn’t have a consistent forward lean when he goes down. He also needs to do a better job of breaking ankle tackles. Unlike smaller backs, Jennings isn’t incredibly shifty and won’t make a lot of guys miss. Stiff hips. Has had some work ethic issues early in his career and saw his weight fluctuate greatly. Missed two games in 2007 due to an NCAA rules violation. Has to improve his route running to be a factor receiving in the NFL.
Final word: Largely an unknown to most football fans, Jennings is a transfer from Pittsburgh. There, he was the team’s second-leading rusher as a true freshman in 2005. Jennings impressed with a solid week of practice at the East-West Shrine Game. Even though he played at a lower competition level, his game should translate to the NFL. He might just have to be in a rotation with a shifty speed back to be best utilized.
he seems like he’d satisfy everyone…big, receiving better each year…an RB. I think that’d be a solid pick
what's the word on his blocking?
mockingthedraft says it’s suspect…any word on what that means for the eagles? I seem to remember tony hunt never really got into the swing of things b/c he couldn’t block, and that’s what we want in a back.
What about Hank Baskett?

Yes
I think Redskins were considering him at 13 if Okrapo was gone.
Of course, one year we decided between Bunkley and Justice at 14, ended up with them both, and still ended up with only one of them :)

Sal Pal says...
…Eagles were worried Giants were going to move up to get Maclin. If true, this makes me feel even better.
Yes ...
… that ends soon though.
All the better knowing it was because they burned all those picks to get Roy Williams.
I bet the Redskins wish they had a second-rounder to have gone after Brown with.

Cowboys pick
51 sandwiched between two Browns picks, and two in front of us.

What's Plan B?
Though. If he goes sooner?’
No dis, just curious what you think. Jennings? Shonn Greene? What do we do at 53 then?
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Four CBs
gone so far in the second.
Safe to say a Sheldon replacement is looking unlikelier by the minute (which is good, because I want him to man up and play … although Sean Smith still on the board)
Somebody mentioned Tony Scheffler earlier. Anyone seen/heard anything new on that?

Yeah, the only highlight of him
in a Redskins uni seems to be of him drilling McNabb.

ok, four more picks and then we're up?
any guesses/wishes? McCoy? Unger? TE? Safety?
by Luxury_Used_Vehicles_By_Braman on Apr 25, 2009 8:45 PM EDT reply actions
i would take a TE or and RB...think those are the top two needs, with RB priority for me
the only reason i might wait on RB is if it were a reach to take the guy at 53.
I'd complain, but this team has stockpiled O Line for years
Time to man the skill positions as deep as possible
If we come out of today...
…with Maclin and McCoy, I’d be damn happy.

the Andy Reid “we thought he was the best RB in the draft” quote earlier would be spot-on again :)

If the Browns were to pick a RB it would be after the Cowgirls…my vote is for Andre Brown…but I know McCoy is the favorite here…I’d be happy with either…

I'd be happy with Sean Smith too ...
… for Sheldon insurance.
Although maybe Ike really turns out to be something.
Maybe they’ll draft someone/do something none of us saw coming.

Passed and traded is what it looks like – so Cleveland on the clock and Bills with the Cowboys pick next up?

Not liking this. Buffalo traded up.
A TE or RB could come off the board here. (Buff can’t be too secure long term given their RB situation right now)
Sure. But he's got a lot of mileage. And they had legal problems with other RB's.
So picking a good young back would make sense in the long run.
yeah i know man
i was thinkin the same thing, but more TE than RB likely

Good. Buff took an O lineman.
Andy Reid must have demanded a LOT in that Peters deal. “Take at least 2 linemen first day”
Rosenhause
"The brownies,'' Fernandez said after the game. "The brownies are good for me to make three-points.''
Yes.
I like the Maclin pick a lot more backed by McCoy.

"I think if you go low on Runyan, he may drop the knee somewhere. So I think you have to stay high and just let him baptize you. That's probably what I would do. You know when you go backwards and your head hits first and you wake up as if somebody baptized you or blessed you? I think that would be Runyan right there, all day, every day."

better than I could have imagined.
www.okupy.com
They got 4 5th rounders
They can move way up in the 3rd to get the TE they want, or whatever position they want.
I am kinda sad we didn't get moreno and cook.
Cook is a beast. He’d be the big body we need and he has Ups! Okay I’m out guys. It was a long day. The Maclin train will be running through for the next few months. I am just saying. The last time we took a WR in the first round….Freddie Mitchell. We could have gotten Reggie Wayne, Chad Johnson, and countless other Pro Bowlers.
Technically
Cook isn’t gone yet and anything can happen.

What a Day!! Solid Picks!!!
I can’t believe the Eagles finally did something productive with their picks. McCoy will be a great complement to Westbrook!! Here’s the take on McCoy from the analysts:
The Eagles get their running back of the future with the selection of McCoy. The former Panther has an exceptional combination of quickness, vision and elusiveness. In addition, McCoy is an outstanding receiver with terrific hands. With Brian Westbrook advancing in age, McCoy should serve as a solid complementary player next season.
Heard someone repeat that
And I got a warm feeling inside too

Draft Day 2009
19 – WR Jeremy Maclin
28 – OT Jason Peters
53 – RB LeSean McCoy
That’s…making me tingle.
Me likey
Add Weaver and Stacy Andrews in free agency, and I think we’ve potentially improved.
I wonder how soon McCoy will be ready. It would be great not to fear the words “Westbrook is a game-time decision.”
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Heck yeah
I think the Eagles knew it would pan out something like this.
A lot of the people who were arguing against Pettigrew were saying this same thing, that he’s a great talent, but if you can get 80% of him in the third round, 64 picks later, isn’t that better value?
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
so unless we trade up we're done today right?
how many rounds are first day i forget?

Two thoughts
1) A deal for Scheffler, a TE who we know is NFL-ready, would pretty much seal the draft for me. I wouldn’t have too much of a care as to what they do with the rest of their picks.
2) Look for the Birds to package some of their lower-round ammo to get up to tomorrow’s first 10 picks. They seem to like to go back after Day 1, regroup and see who all is on the board, and then pick right away. They did it the year they got Considine, and they year they traded Hollis Thomas to the Saints (forget what we did with the pick though)
Here’s hoping if they don’t do that or spin some picks forward to next year, that they find some more 5th round gems like Cole or Celek. :)

Anybody seen a best-availabe list
through the end of Round 2?
I saw Smith and Beatty went … but Cook, Coffman and Casey (TEs from SC, Mizzou and Rice) are all still on the board.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
HEre's one from londrajd on PE.com
Lots of great players still available! Some that I like are…
= TE: Jared Cook, Cornelius Ingram = CB: Macho Harris, DJ Moore
= DE: Michael Johnson, Lawrence Sidbury = S; Rashad Johnson
= OLB: Kaluka Maiava, Nic Harris = FB: Tony Fiammetta, Quinn Johnson
= RB: Shonn Greene, Rashad Jennings = WR: Brandon Tate, Ramses Barden
=== P: Kevin Huber.
.. and I could keep going….. back at it tomorrow, 10:00am!
