Eagles trade up for Jeremy Maclin
We're having some sudden and major internet issues here. So I apologize for being slow with reaction. Let's use this as an open thread for reaction to the pick.
Your Philadelphia Eagles have now picked a WR in the first two rounds 2 straight years. Let's hope this is finally the end of the WR question in Philly.

i wish we still looked into getting a vet. oh well this is good too
what if
this is part of a bigger deal for boldin? i dont think it is but i still think this could be a bigger picture thing

i don't think this a good pick at all.
with all the receivers out there, we take maclin? this doesn’t make any sense to me. i can’t believe it. i know moreno wasn’t there, but goddamn. we already have small fast receivers.
Should've been Pettigrew
Maclin is a poor man’s Jackson and they only have Celek at TE.
that would be sweet
that would be cool if he could be our own hester
I'm confused.
Not sure how I feel. But give it some time….

Surprising pick

oh well im happy cornerbacks in the nfl will be playing with a cushion wen they come to philly !
Not too shabby,,,
Remeber that this kid might be a good compliment to our recieving core and remeber that Boldin is super exspensive and donovan wants another reciever. Give this one time before we start up the angry mob people!!

ugh
Hate the pick. absolutely hate it. Now we have 3 5’10’’ receivers who all do the same fucking thing. I can just see the redzone problems coming up again because theres no one over 62 to throw to
i don't understand it.
i would of rather had harvin. yeah, he’s small too. but the guy will get yards after the catch. i’m in a state of disbelief.
Well...
He’s 6’ easy, and he’s nearly 200 lbs…DeSean is like 5’10" 175…he’s not a big guy, but he ain’t tiny either…
---AstrosFan (Austin Lawyer and Sports Fan)
yea, just seems like the same type of receiver

Well...
That causes some serious matchup issues for the other guys…better bring two shut down corners, or you’ll be reading the back of their jerseys all night long…
---AstrosFan (Austin Lawyer and Sports Fan)
what!
hes 6’1 hes more of a play maker than desean he just doesnt always run good routes .. hes a top ten talent and we stold him at 19 . i wanted b pett too .. but he was way too good to pass up .. desean can play in the slot .. or they can all interchange really

A good thing aboug Maclin
He may take DeSean off of special teams…the beating the punt returner takes…many times I thought DeSean was bruised and battered when he was on O because of the hit he took on ST…

I was talking about a bonus of getting a young WR with gettyup…Boldin would not be returning any kicks…

At least Boldin?
He is the same thing as Desean Jackson. There was no point to move up in the draft to pick up a guy that we don’t need.
Why couldn’t we have been satisfied with Pettigrew?
This better be part of a package deal for Boldin, makes sense if you think about it.
I wanted Pettigrew
but I find it hard to be mad about an offensive weapon that was slotted top 10 at No. 19.
Provided they get a very good TE as well.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Are you kidding - I'll take another DeSean Jackson
Both on the field at the same time with Curtis. Both returning punts and kicks. Maclin was a TD machine and was arguably the most explosive receiver in the draft.
If teams knew now what DeSean Jackson was going to be, he would have been a top ten pick. I will most certainly take another DeSean Jackson. Lets come at them in waves.
Just get one of the three running backs right now.

i know. i didn’t mean it quite like that. I’m just saying.
I was just hoping more for the 6 2’’ wide out, with a little experience (Boldin).
ehh. plus I was a little confused about why the need to move up?. not that it really matters anyway.
I love Desean, i just think that we either need a running back or TE right now instead of another guy under 6 foot
yeah but which is proven?……….i thought so
by west36express on Apr 25, 2009 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah - but who wanted $10 million a year...
and isn’t slotted in to a rookie pay scale. Pay Boldin and you are going to have problems with DeSean Jackson and a bunch of other guys within the year. Maclin is going to be making more than Jackson, but the Eagles will have no problem giving Jackson a big pay day in 2 years and everybody in the locker room is going to understand and accept that.
Which one's looking for $9-10 million annual?
Which one has missed a minimum of 4 games a year the past two seasons?
I like Boldin but this isn’t as simplistic as the guys from ESPN suggest.
The monster at the end of this blog.
Mortenson (pardon the spelling)
Was saying teams were hearing up to $10 million for Boldin no more than 5 minutes after the Eagles drafted Maclin.
I’m not sold on the pick, I think the Eagles need a RB and would have been very happy with Brown but if Maclin can give you 80% of Boldin’s production in 2009 at 1/10th the cost then its a good choice.
The monster at the end of this blog.
fuck boldin
hes a product of larry fitz. . maclin is a playmaker .. hes better than desean .. and hes a game changer .. everyone in the post is stupid .. we stold this guy .. boldin for 10 mil or maclin for the next 5 years .. not even a choice ,, maclin!!!!

The move up was strange
I didn’t get it because with Calvin Johnson you wouldn’t expect the lions to draft another wide out. Millen drafted wideouts in the first year on successive drafts and we see where that got him.
Only thing I can guess is that the Giants were making overtures to either the Cleveland pick or the Detroit pick, and that the birds really wanted Maclin ever since Moreno fell off the board. So they gave the Browns a worthless pick to get what they wanted. I like that move and I like the pick.
really?
we passed on gonzo for a 2ND ROUNDER yesterday. he would have solved (or at least began to help) our redzone problem. and then we trade up to get Maclin, very similar to desean??
I hope we have something up our sleeves…
Gonzalez
I think the issue is the Eagles would rather have a player’s entire career, potentially, than a couple years, for a second-rounder.
I don’t necessarily agree since the birds are running out of time with McNabb and had such red zone deficiencies last 2 years, but I can see where they’re coming from.

i dont know i like macklin but wells was there ,pettigrew was there i just dont understand why they would take another wr. and one thats puts me in mind of jackson
Give them a chance yet ...
… maybe they get the RB and TE later. Only one of each off the board through the 24th pick.

really do not understand………does anyone think that this guy will be ONLY a special teams guy? if so seems kinda weird that they would pick him up. i know it sounds retarded but they could of gotten boldin instead of this guy, ive looked up his highlights, seems pretty good but…………..
Dont hate just yet
I dont think that people here realize that this guy was supposed to go in the first 15 and has the stats and speed we want, who cares if he’s not a power WR, if he can dust a CB and run it into the end zone, I say we made a good choice!

Notes on Jeremy Maclin
Redshirt Sophomore. Big time playmaker with explosive speed. Not a polished WR, though. Knee injury cost him the 2006 season. Mizzou used him very creatively. They understood what a dynamic force Maclin was and got him the ball as much as possible. Had 91 career carries for 668 yards and 6 TDs. Caught 182 passes for 2315 yards and 22 TDs. One concern is that Maclin was used in a spread offense. His route running will need work. Mizzou got him the ball by design. That won’t happen as much in the NFL. Has good, but not great hands.
Not only was Maclin their best offensive player, but he was an elite kick returner. He ran back 3 punts for TDs and 2 kickoffs.
Top 25 pick.
all of that should have been in quotes…

pick
I dont know too much about Maclin but it seems like a good pick to me, yeah we need RB most (our TEs are fine for a bit, not great but it is not like they are horrible) but WR is probably the next biggest area. If the guy is the same as desean and Curtis that is no big deal because then they will just haev to have 3 fast corners or safeties or whatever. Haha, i mean you could have 3 6 foot 4 guys too and even if they are a little slower they would still work well together. To say it is bad because he is the same as Jackson is kind of weird, imgaine if we got someone who was the same as Westbrook that would be good. Jackson did well last year during his rookie year, hopefully he does better this year.
As far as RB it seems like there are 3 guys, Brown McCoy and Wells who are all about the same so why not just wait and take one of them in the 2nd round or something.
Probably the best player out there available and fits in the best with our need
Exactly
if we get Brown, McCoy or Wells in 2 … that’ll be hard to beef with.
Also, Weaver and improved T play will help make up for the lack of a blocking TE, if that ends up being the case.
Of course, it could end up being a glaring hole on an otherwise stacked roster.
Blocking TEs can be found later though. I’m hopeful.

Celek is legit ...
… as a passing threat.
Problem is Birds can do whatever they want between the 20s. Can they finish drives this year (with Weaver?), or will they settle for field goal attempts and lose close games again?
These next few rounds may determine.

Draft picks are slotted
and Cleveland coveted a center. So they will pay him much less than if they had taken him earlier, or used their first-rounder on a more premium position.
I guess Philly needed to jump in front of Detroit to get Maclin.

Gotta judge the draft as a whole ...
… let’s see how they finish this thing out. They still need the RB and TE.
As for the Maclin pick, very few of us saw it coming, but that’s what the Eagles do, zig when everyone thinks they’re going to zag … they draft for value, not for need.
I was 100% in the WR is a WANT not a NEED camp, and I really coveted Moreno or Pettigrew.
But I find it very hard to be angry with my team for drafting a player widely regarded as a top-10 talent as we prepare to pay him the No. 19 salary. And he fits our system and can return kicks to boot.
And to think I thought this pick would make the value and the Need a WR camps happy. I guess some Philly fans will second-guess anything :)

another Scouting report
Reads kinda like a WR I was drooling about:
At 6-1 and 200 pounds, Maclin has a rare blend of size and speed. Obviously there will be taller receivers out there, but not many in the NFL are 6-1 and 200 pounds and as fast as Maclin. He is not just a speed receiver either; he will break his fair share of tackles.
There’s a ton more info in this one so check out the link
Don't be worried we didn't take Pettigrew
Obviously the birds are high on Celek. He has put on some muscle, will work on blocking, and we already know how dominate can be in the passing game. We don’t need a 2nd starting quality TE. Eagles got speed with the first pick… Can’t teach speed, but you can teach a TE how to block better. This guy will be GOOD!
"I'd like to thank my hands for being so great."
-FredEx
totally agree
I am not sure why everyone thought TE was such an important position to fill anyway — i was hoping the eagles wouldnt take Pettigrew he sounded like he would be kind of soft — plus the Celek Schoebel tandem has been mildly competent in the past year or two, whereas aside from Curtis and Jackson, the WRs havent been — I think WR was a bigger need than TE
Boldin?
What is the possibility of packaging this guy for Boldin. Or is it even worth it anymore?
Lol

And BTW, we didn’t get Boldin because he’s NOT ON THE BLOCK.

Or because he wants $10 million
or because he’s 29 years old.
I wanted Boldin as much as the next guy, but if we couldn’t get him I’m at least happy that we didn’t draft an offensive lineman. I wanted Moreno also, and I bet the birds were ready to jump in front of the chargers to get him – but the Denver choice killed that.
Yeah
I think it’s weird that you get 3 months to pre-analyze the draft, the team gets 10 minutes (or a couple hours) to make up their minds, then we get 3 more months to second-guess :)
And anything can happen. I did not see Moreno at 12.

and I like this pick! Helps the wr core and they can easily get a good TE or RB in the 2nd now, McCoy or Javon Ringer would be good for me!
No Need to worry about TEs
There are still a lot of great options on the board. Jared Cook seems to be a better fit for the birds as it is anyways. The guy runs a sub 4.50 40 and hauled in 10 TDs for 800 yards last year. He could be a huge weapon for us this season. Ingram and Nelson are the same way. I can only hope they drop to pick 53….

…is a moron! We took the best player available! Maclin should have been taken between 10 and 15, I’ll gladly take him at 21, especially since our boy Knowshon Moreno wasn’t there. I dare the Cowboys, Giants, or Redskins to try guarding our trio of Maclin/Jackson/Curtis… can’t be done. We may be a bit undersized, but our speed is nasty! Brilliant pick by the Eagles. Make McNabb happy. Complete the WR group. There are plenty of RBs left. Don’t worry.

Agreed.
I’ll take the upgrade from Baskett/Avant to Maclin over that of Celek to Pettigrew. I also like taking the highest guy remaining on your board over a player that isn’t as good or doesn’t fit your system.
I’m pissed at the Broncos for taking both Moreno and Ayers (not that I don’t think Cole and Parker can handle it, Ayers just looked great to me).
The red zone concern is still huge.

Ambivalent about this pick
Maclin may be a good pick in the long run, but frustrating for those of us who want to win before Westbrook’s knees break down. Barring any moves, I don’t think he’s gonna see that much time at WR, although he will be valuable as a return man. He’ll be rotating in with Baskett and Avant and Brown, and won’t get enough reps to produce the way that Jackson did last year, unless there’s a lot of injuries. In a couple of years though he should be either the on or the two, once Curtis slows down and he’s a definite upgrade over Avant and Baskett once he adjusts to the pro game. I’m not convinced it was the best use of a first round pick, but it’s not a terrible move.
