NFL Draft Live blog live from the Press Pit
I'll be updating this post throughout the day. You can also follow my little updates and sightings over on the BGN twitter.
They've just let the fans into the building and the excitement has grown considerably. They're all doing team cheers and calling down to the people on the ESPN and NFLN sets.
The Buzz around here is that the Panthers are having trouble finding any takers for Julius Peppers.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 2:59 PM EDT ] All the guys who walk the picks up to the commish from the team have a jar of team colored Jelly beans at their table. It's my new mission to get a taste of the green white and black beans!
Lots of J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS chants. Just met a nice Dallas fan, born and raised in NJ. What a shock.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 3:19 PM EDT ] Deion Sanders just jumped on the main stage and got roundly booed by the crowd. He seemed to enjoy it though
Biggest chant of the day so far "Harry Kalas! Ha-rry Kalas!" All fans joined in on that one. Very cool!
Just caught the very end of the Kalas chant.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 3:28 PM EDT ] WIth just a half hour to go the atmosphere is really on fire here. Jets fans are screaming anything they can to get the attention of the ESPN guys... A Packer fan may have also gotten an F word on the air. He screamed it out over the entire theater. Really no need for that.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 3:37 PM EDT ] D'Brickashaw Ferguson was just introduced and got booed very loudly by the fans in attendance. Seems like the Jets fans are not high on him?
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 3:50 PM EDT ] Lots of NJ football supporters here. Eugene Monroe and Brian Cushing, both Jersey guys, got big cheers and "Jersey Football" chants. All the top prospects were just introduced, all but Stafford got nice cheers. Matt got booed...
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 4:00 PM EDT ] Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyoria were just introduced to HUGE boos. Osi just asked about last year's "disappointment" in the playoffs. Personally, I don't remember that as very dissapointing. :)
Definitely far more Jets and Eagles fans than Giants fans here. At least judging by the noise.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 4:06 PM EDT ] Matt Stafford is introduced to 100% boos and chants of "overrated." Much worse than McNabb got on draft day, although there's really no Detroit fans here.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 4:12 PM EDT ] Hearing some crazy rumors about the Eagles sending #21 and Shawn Andrews to Cleveland for the BRowns #5 overall and Braylon Edwards. Seems farfetched to me.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 4:30 PM EDT ] Big cheer in Radio City as the announcement that the Jets have traded for the #5 overall pick. It has to be Sanchez right?
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 4:41 PM EDT ] One of those moments that give you chills here as the Jets fan absolutely erupt at the announcement that they've selected USC QB Mark Sanchez. A brief chant of "Dirty Sanchez" breaks out.
The snap judgment of press around us was that the Jets gave up quite a bit for Sanchez. What do you think?
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 4:50 PM EDT ] The Bengals select Andre Smith before Eugene Monroe. Bit of a shock there, but obviously they like the film on this guy and don't care what happened at the combine.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 4:56 PM EDT ] Huge shock as the Raiders select Darius Heyward-Bey as the first WR to be taken. MIchael Crabtree looking a little upset backstage. What are they thinking? They could have had him at least 5 or 6 picks later... Lots of writers around me scratching their heads.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:02 PM EDT ] I'm getting a kick out of the team specific songs they're playing as each team is on the clock. The Jaguars get Lynyrd Skynyrd.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:05 PM EDT ] BIg cheer in Radio City as the Jags select Eugene Monroe. The NJ contingent in the house is really supporting the jersey boys...
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:10 PM EDT ] Crabtree continues to slide as the Pack will take BJ Raji. San Fran has to think a gift just fell to them. They have to take Crabtree right?
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:13 PM EDT ] Wisconsin band Violent Femmes plays as the Pack are on the clock.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:17 PM EDT ] I just got back from the Eugene Monroe press conference and he was asked if he was surprised that Jacksonville took him.
He said, "Yeah, the last time I talked the Jaguars was pro day. I had no idea they wanted me."
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:30 PM EDT ] "Fake tales of San Francisco" by the Arctic Monkeys plays for the 49ers. "Buffalo Soldier" is the song playing as the Bills make their pick. "Rocky Mt High" by John Denver plays for the Broncos. Love these songs! Any guess as to the Eagles song?
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:31 PM EDT ] Knowshon is off the board! The Broncos make a surprising pick of Knowhson Moreno. TheSportsGuru from Mile High Report doesn't seem very pleased. Lot of boos for that pick, I'm guessing from disappointed Eagles fans.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:34 PM EDT ] The Redskins take Brian Orapko to play DE for them. Many had Orakpo pegged as an OLB in a 3-4.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:38 PM EDT ] "Jersey Football" chants ring through the arena again as the Saints select another Jersey boy, Malcolm Jenkins. "Saints Go Marching In" plays for the pick.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:44 PM EDT ] No need to stop the "Jersey Football" chants as the Texans make another Jersey guy, Brian Cushing, the next pick in the draft!
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:52 PM EDT ] Worst song of the day as the Chargers pick DE Larry English. Imagine singing "San DIego Chargers" to the tune of "We will rock you" That's the song.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:55 PM EDT ] FOUR picks until the Eagles go with Pettigrew, Maclin, & Donald Brown still on the board.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 5:56 PM EDT ] Cleveland pulls a Reid and trades their first pick twice! Tampa clearly was scared that Denver would take Josh Freeman, so they jumped up two picks to get him. "A Pirates Life for Me" plays in the arena.
[Note by JasonB, 04/25/09 6:07 PM EDT ] The Browns are on the clock and the Eagles are up next. Either Maclin or Pettigrew will be on the board when we pick. I'd love if it was Maclin. No need for Boldin or Edwards talk at that point. I will be posting a NEW thread when the Eagles pick.
EAGLES TRADE UP AND ARE ON THE CLOCK!

Just talked to some Eagles fans here for the event. THey sould like they’d be happy with pretty much anything we do.
Also I asked a Dallas fan what part of Texas he’s from. Apparently a town called “New Jersey”
LOL
lol those damn cowboys fans.
I’ve met people who like them because of the “America’s” team argument. I call them hicks. Ohhh South Jersey.
So am I. 15 mins from philly down 42 before the ac expressway starts.
I am totally entitled to talk about SJ.
Im from Vineland, no hicks there from what I can tell lol.

Alright so guys.
I have a feeling that the Detroit Lions are going to pick Stafford. Just a feeling but I am pretty confident in them.
Hey, I’m like Mel Kiper!!!
How many games do the Lions win?
I say 3.
"The brownies,'' Fernandez said after the game. "The brownies are good for me to make three-points.''
Stafford got lit up with some boos haha

Likelihood Eagles make a trade at 21
What do you guys think the odds are the eagles make some kind of move in the first round. The more and more i think about this draft the more i keep feeling like we r not gonna just take a player at our spot and leave it at that. Maybe i’m just preconditioned for this stuff…
Tommy Lawlor said it well
They have a list of 4-5 players they like at #21. If any one of those guys is there they take him. If not, they trade down. If they can trade up to get one of the 4-5, and it’s reasonable, they do that too.
all depends on whos there
if theres no one we really like, then we will trade down or out like last year
its too early to tell right now

Only 16 starts.
Man the risk the Jets are taking seems really big to me.
They weren’t bad last year and the D will be greatly improved with Rex Ryan.
Good stuff tho – glad it’s not the Eagles doing it…

No, that was a confusing graphic...
It was the 17th overall, the Jets 2nd rounder, and 3 scrubs that Mangini must have liked.
Alful trade for the Browns. Just awful.
they get another qb?

Wow
Andre Smith. Forget all that pre-draft nonsense
I took this guy in BGN’s draft at #10 to San Fran
The rumors I’ve heard is that the Eagles may have turned their attention to Braylon Edwards.
Nothing solid though.
I’m not a fan of Braylon to Philly – seems we’ve got a Braylon type in DeSean…
Boldin on the other hand – I’d lose it.

All that talent, so many "meh"performances. All season long. Especially in big games.
Their top 2 defensemen have played great
In fact, their top two PAIRINGS have plyed great, and Biron is outplaying his opponent. Again. Can’t agree with you on D or goalie, at least in this series.

That's a real surprise
The Broncos really need D, the players I think they wanted were gone tho’ so RB?
man.
at this point they should… actually they should trade 21 for 28 with buffalo with an additional pick from buffalo… the bills can get pettigrew at 21 and we get brown at 28

A running back in the first round would have to be EXTREMELY special for the eagles to pull the trigger on that. They just weren’t gonna do it anyway.

With their #1 choice gone, do they pull an expensive trade for Bolden?

Any estimate on how many Philly faithful are in attendance? Haven’t seen a lot on the wide shots.
This is getting interesting ...
… Moreno’s really the only guy we had in our sights (as fans, anyway) to go so far. And here’s who’s up next:
16 Chargers
17 Browns
18 Broncos
19 Buccaneers
20 Lions
21 Eagles
Who among these teams can hurt us most? Or do we trade down?

Well what gets me angry is the WRs they get are always small and speedy. Look at our roster.
The fact is they traded up to get this guy. We do know this guy by what he is compared to, which is Desean Jackson. I am sorry if we wanted to draft a WR in the first round, how about a bigger guy?

rather than raw size.

You pick to make your team better, am I right? I don’t understand it but I will live. I like the sound of “Mack N Jack” but we need a big body.
draft is such a crapshoot
that you take the best player available. If he turns out then you have a good problem. The better the player, the higher the chance he’ll be useful, which is what drafting a player is all about. Drafting for need is a good way to fill your team with okay players.

It’s odd how Reid praises this guys hands, yet ESPN had that listed as one of the things needed to be worked on.
I’m surprised that the Patriots didn’t take Maualuga

Andy's corpulence amazes me
He sat under hot lights for 5 minutes and said he needed to take a shower.
prob gotta change his pants after gettin to draft maclin

You know what would have been intriguing, if the Eagles took a RB there, and traded up for a WR like Britt or Nicks later.
I think they feel Nicks is a possession WR
And Reid keeps saying he loves Avant in that role. Not sure about Britt. Either way, I’m just curious about TE and RB now
Yes understood, but I think thats our biggest need isn’t it? Beyond the fact Boldin is amazing, he’s more of a possesion guy not like a Lee Evans type or Santana Moss who is almost ALWAYS looking for the home run.
Boldin
Seriously, I think we would’ve made a deal for Boldin if we REALLY thought he was on the block. AZ isn’t going to trade him.

Yeah I agree, I’m actually surprised Edwards isn’t coming our way. We had so many pieces to move him with picks, Sheld Brown, and Shawn Andrews.
Yeah, I think I'd rather have
Sheldon (provided he’s happy), Sean Andrews and Maclin than Braylon Edwards.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Reid usually knows what he is doing. But I think that it was anticlimactic.
I am not sold on having an array of small speedy WR. We had this talk about having a reciever draw coverage and attention. Do you guys feel confident that Maclin could do this?
How far can Beanie fall before you’ve gotta think about trading up to get him? I don’t like the injury thing, but he is a type of back we could use that pounds it up the middle. Not to mention he’s fallen further than Maclin.
Thats true I forgot about that. Could be how they’re thinking. In that case, then Go with McCoy or Brown.
Anybody think they’d completely ignore RB now that they have a real FB and a good line, with the thought that Westbrook won’t get banged up as much?
If Buck would have stayed I could see it but I dont think they have enough faith in Booker as a solid #2.

This is one of the strangest drafts in years
Picks. Reaches. Eagles fans complaining about a 1st round WR selection. Jets fans cheering their team’s pick. Guess the Mayan calendar thing is right

lol
that’s true. i’m definitely in the group of people who are angry with the pick. i don’t know why i’m so upset about it. maybe it’s just because i wasnt expecting it. i havent been able to wrap my head around the idea of another young, small receiver. why didn’t we get percy harvin? he’s absolutely ripped, tough as nails, and i’m pretty sure he’s faster than maclin. it just bugs me to see us get a want and not a need.
"I think if you go low on Runyan, he may drop the knee somewhere. So I think you have to stay high and just let him baptize you. That's probably what I would do. You know when you go backwards and your head hits first and you wake up as if somebody baptized you or blessed you? I think that would be Runyan right there, all day, every day."
- Titans' cornerback Cortland Finnegan
Think...
…if we select a RB in the 2nd, we’d go skill position in the first two rounds. That’s amazing.
I dont think Andy wants Wells. I see him going for McCoy.

Discussion Question
DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis, Jeremy Maclin, Hank Baskett and Jason Avant…
…oh, and Reggie Brown. What happens to him?
Reggie Who?
He’s done. But I REALLY like this group of receivers. Compare them to the past- Mitchell, Pickston, Lewis, THRASH! I mean, come on- this groups WAY better than them.
Definitely
Which means while he may not get a contract this year (or at least not until October or so) they are giving him weapons to go all the way- a fullback, a WR in the first round, the best OL in football, on top of a young possibly great defense.
Yes, but the costs so far--even for the Jets--have made the "chart" look silly and out of date
Therefore I can’t imagine sliding a round being that bad.
Maclin
Only the third player in NCAA history to average 200 all-purpose yards PER GAME over his ENTIRE CAREER.
That could mean
he just returned a lot of kicks.
But clearly he doesn’t suck.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Why does the idea of two DeSean Jacksons
bother people?
As long as Weaver and our yet-to-be-drafted Red Zone TE punch it in, that’s going to be monstrous.
I’m sure I’ll be repeating this point a lot :)
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
It is a tough NFC East.
Would you rather have a strong big guy to get physical or a small speedy guy?
I just think of the Carolina game everytime I have a discussion about physicality.
Maclin has 2 inches and almost 20 pounds on Desean. Not a monster but its not exactly the same type of WR.

Nicks is the better choice, but they might go with Britt since they are familiar with him. It would suck bc I can’t root for my fellow Rutgers alumnus

Hakeem nicks 6’0 212 vs Maclin 6’0 200… Maclin has more size then I think we are crediting him with.

JASON B
What did the Pack give up for the Pats pick???
"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

Wow. Okay, I was wrong.
Sorry. That’s certainly a hefty cost.

Not if the rumors that AZ wants an RB in trade for Boldin are true...
In that case, they’re merely replacing whomever they trade—along with a 2d rounder, and maybe a 3d
LenDale is going into a contract year tho...
could they be preparing to trade him??

I actually wanted Kenny Britt more than Maclin.
Personal bias partially but he is what I wanted in a WR for McNabb.
i think we can cross beanie off the board now

Yeah
I believe in the “draft the best player available.” I can’t think rationally right now though. I want LeSean AT LEAST as a consolation prize for missing out on Knowshon and Brown.

As much as I hate to admit it…..the Broncos are playing this thing extremely well.
Knowshon Moreno
Robert Ayers
Alfonso Smith

Then I saw that it was the fourth and we hadn’t given up any runs yet – did we just skip the starters and put the bullpen in to start the game?

but at some point, they’ll probably try to draft nmadi asomghua again…they don’t get much right, so I bet they wanna feel good about themselves again for getting something right.
