Draft weekend has officially kicked off... ESPN is reporting that the Lions and Matthew Stafford have agreed to a 6 year $78 million deal with $41.7 million guaranteed! The deal means Stafford will become the first overall pick in the draft on Saturday. You can read my essay on these types of ridiculous rookie contracts here...

Stafford, who has yet to play a down in the NFL, has just been given more guaranteed money than any player in NFL history. The reaction of Lions fans is understandably mixed.

So that pretty much puts the Rams on the clock at #2. Hopefully Detroit will do us all a favor and take Stafford as soon as they go on the clock and not make us wait 10 minutes...

Ridiculous salary

For a kid who’s never played a snap in the NFL. He will now be paid more than most of the elite QB’s in the league.

I mean, if you’re the kid, you take it, of course. But I think there needs to be major changes in the sport.

Rookie salary caps are a good idea

but jason b compares a normal workplace to the NFL in a critique of inexperienced college kids making more money than experienced veterans. The difference being that if I work in a sales department, physical stature and youth don’t really matter, but in sports (and especially the NFL) they do.

I don’t disagree that rookie contracts in the NFL are out of whack (I guess the Birds don’t seem so dumb for trading out of the first round), but their contracts aren’t guaranteed and last time I looked NFL teams and the NFL were making a nice profit.

Their contracts are for all intents and purposes guaranteed. Any top rookie is going to have so much guaranteed money that he can’t be cut for several years.

RIP Matthew Stafford's career

Well, son, you had a nice run….
Seriously, why draft a QB? If you don’t have anyone around him, you’re just going to f up his development. You can’t learn the position if you are alone on a football field

Are you fraking kidding me?

41.7 mil guaranteed in as 72 million + dollar contract.
If I’m Sheldon Brown, I’m not just going to be a distraction, I’m screaming to renegotiate my contract.
WTF has Matt Stafford done in the NFL.

That is crazy

So much money to somebody who might suck really bad.

This is just STUPID

If the Lions get this pick wrong it could set them back another 5 years.. Wow

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

If not longer

At that salary you have to figured they’d give him 4 years. If he is a bust, then they start the process of finding a franchise quarterback all over again in five years. Two years of growing pains for the replacement they’d have to draft and they’ve spent 7 years in neutral.

This is they kind of absurdity that I really think will make the owners and players union really push hard for some type of rookie salary control with the next bargaining agreement.

i was just checkin out the lions page…they, by and large, are not too happy about this pick/the amount of money he got. I can’t say I’d be pleased if we spent that much on a rookie, either.

what

this is my problem .. all you common fans bitch and complain about rookie salarys .. this guy worked his ass off to be the number one pick in the draft .. theres only one number one pick .. and hes it .. he could get hurt .. he could be a bust or he could be a star .. this may be his only big pay day .. so working his ass off to get it means he deserves it .. no rookie cap .. thats bs .. rookies can make an impact just like vets .. matt ryan was a top 10 qb last season.. i support rookies getting paid .. it may be their only big pay day for working so hard to be that high pick .. you go lift 5 days a week and run countless 40s .. and then play college ball and suffer through the week in and week out process while still having to improve .. he deserves every penny of this money .. why can i justify a guy like stacy andrews .. who never played football until a few years ago .. was still a project when the bengals took him .. and still is sort of a project getting paid? hes basically like a draft pick .. he is as much of a project olineman as jake long was .. infact you can argue that long was actually more established at his position .. stacy is just massive and strong .. so you can teach him to block .. but you guys are all ok with paying him .. stafford is the number 1 pick and deserves every penny .. the rookie cap shit aggervates me

Why do you act like a rookie cap will prevent a guy from “getting paid?”

Even with a rookie cap these guys are going to make a ton of money, They’re still going to be set for life with their first contract.

They just aren’t going to get the largest contract in NFL history. If you can’t see how a guy who has never played a down in the NFL getting the largest contract in history is ridiculous then I don’t know what to say.

Get used to the idea of a rookie cap, because it’s going to happen. The owners want it and the players want it.

by JasonB on Apr 25, 2009 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

how about

the get guaranteed contracts first .. cuz thats a much better idea .. the rookie cap is a ok idea .. but the first pick still needs to be really high .. like a franchise tender for the first 10 picks ..average salarys of top 10 players at that position

by jack is better than asante on Apr 25, 2009 2:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The contracts will still have guaranteed money in them under a rookie pay scale. Probably a lot. Just not the most in NFL history for any player.

Jason

Don’t try to argue with him. The man has no ability to use reason in his arguments. Just look at his other posts. You make a lot of sense, but he’ll never get it. Look at his name for Christ’s sake!

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

man you are either..

…the best troll ever or the biggest asshole ever

also

why can i justify a guy like stacy andrews .. who never played football until a few years ago .. was still a project when the bengals took him .. and still is sort of a project getting paid?

you see the difference is that Stacey has proven him self on the NFL level and the players that you say “deserve” to get there pay day for practicing running 40 yard sprints and how high they can jump and how many times they can bench 255 lbs. while they have never taken an NFL snap and mat never do so.

bs

he worked his ass off to be the nu,ber one pick .. stacy hasnt proven anything .. hes still a project ..he made a probowl because the bengals were good that year .. you all bitch about peters sack totals . well stacy was just behind him .. n no one complains .. hes massive .. thats why we signed him .. not because he was a premier tackle .. but because he can be .. im sorry but i care more about the players .. i like to see them get paid .. if ur the number one pick u earned that big pay day ..

by jack is better than asante on Apr 25, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What are you talking about?

1) Stacy never made Pro Bowl.
2) He played well enough in 2007 for Bengals to franchise him.
3) Where do you get Stacy’s sack total from?
4) We sign him because he played well for the Bengals, plus Andy know good offensive linemen.
5) With that logic, Stafford is much of a project as Stacy is. Since, you know, he isn’t a proven QB
6) Oh, Stafford is number 1, he need $41.5 million dollars! Where is the logic in that again? “He works hard”? So PROVEN veterans don’t work hard? Hell, Tom Brady makes $7 million per year, Stafford is making something like $14 million per year with that contract.

Moo.

your buy jack was hurt the whole pre draft process

and didn’t do many of the workouts that people selected after him did. So did he deserve to get paid more then all of those players even though he did less work?

by homestar2281 on Apr 25, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Insane

$41.5 million dollars for being ‘top QB’ in a crappy QB class… Good luck to the Lions.

Mel Kiper Jr.—love him or hate him—predicted Matthew Stafford, before playing a down of COLLEGE football, would one day be the #1 pick in the NFL draft.

That’s a fact. Read into it however you like.

by graveyardmachine on Apr 25, 2009 3:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

WOW

this puts him at $13 million a year while the highest salary of any QB in the league’s salary is $16 million. That is just over the top … way over the top.

The Lions must like to gamble. Have they ever taken a “safe bet” when drafting in the 1st round? At least they didnt go WR i guess…..
Sorry Milan, Crabtree would have been yours!

worst… contract… ever…
