Brown uses Westbrook's deal to support case
Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown spoke to WIP's Morning Show yesterday about his contract situation. He had talked to both The Inquirer and Daily News earlier this week, but something he said to Angelo Cataldi and company caught my attention.
It was in reference to the Eagles' decision to rework Brian Westbrook's contract prior to last season.
"At the end of the day, you’re saying, 'If I do it for him, I can’t do it for another guy,'" Brown said. "Well I didn’t start the floodgate. It opened when Brian [Westbrook] had three years left on his deal. Yeah but you have four. Well if that’s the case, say ‘We did it with Brian with three. You have four. Play one more.’ But now don’t bring that up and say ‘Oh but you have four.’ That’s just because it’s something that makes you look good."
Brown, of course, is pointing out that the Eagles chose to rework Westbrook's contract when he had three years left. His argument is: Why should reworking my deal, which has four years left, be so crazy?
It's an interesting comparison because Jon Runyan also brought up Westbrook's contract earlier this week during an ESPN 950 interview with Mike Missanelli.
Here's what Runyan said when asked if the Eagles were trying to send a message to everyone with their sharp response this week.
"It’s a message for this one. Everybody has their own," he said. "Brian Westbrook went through the same thing last year and ultimately got it done so it’s just one of those games everybody plays. That’s the thing. Depending on who it is and what your value is, the rules of the game change also."
It's clear that Eagles players took notice when the team reworked Westbrook's contract.
And interestingly enough, that might have been something the Eagles' brass anticipated.
I went into the archives to find Joe Banner's comments after the Eagles announced the new Westbrook contract. Banner recalled a deal with Brian Dawkins two years earlier and compared it to Westbrook's.
"We think of [Dawkins] as a Hall of Fame-caliber player. I feel like I'm standing up here again right before the first preseason game of the season, we're talking about a Hall of Fame-caliber player," Banner told the Daily News. "This is a premier guy, leader, player. What he has done over the last few weeks here, with this going on, and still working - he came out there when he had strep throat and practiced. When he had an excuse, regardless of what was going on. He just wants to win so badly. He wants the team to be the best it can be.
"That's what drove him; it's what has always driven him. If you put the same things I said about Dawkins a few years ago, if you take somebody with that kind of talent, and those kind of intangibles that they bring to your team, in who they are in their heart, in their head, that is the guy you want to make sure is feeling good about things, if you possibly can."The message seems clear. If the franchise values you at a certain level, it's willing to make concessions, as was the case with Westbrook. And as may be the case with Donovan McNabb if the team reworks his deal this offseason.
But for others like Lito Sheppard and Brown, sounding off really isn't going to get you anywhere.

I think Sheldon is a hell of a player and one of the most underrated CB's if not the most but to compare his situation to Westbrook's is stupid.

In a matter of less than a week, my opinion of Sheldon Brown has gone from one of my favorite players ever, to someone that I’m now rooting for to fail miserably (assuming they dump this clown).
Such a disappointment. You don’t deserve to play for this town, you whining, crybaby douche.

Ok, ok
I have been pretty supportive of Sheldon all week. While I did not think the Eagles should budge, I did not have a major problem with anything he had done to this point. It is all part of the business. These statements are making me sway though. It is very easy to see how an exception can be made for Westbrook. Not only that because of how valuable Westbrook was to the team but he was also severely underpaid. If you look at the general landscape, Brown is not severely underpaid. He is just underpaid compared to Asante.
Regardless, for all of you that want him dumped, let’s see his next move. This could all just be posturing (although it is seeming less and less likely). Just like you all tend to give the FO the benefit of the doubt based on historical success, I am clinging to some hope that Sheldon will show up to camp and be the player we expect him to be.
He's gone WAY past posturing...
He lost me completely when he mentioned other players (Trent Cole and Mike Patterson) that should be unhappy with their contracts as well. At this point, he’s actively trying to lead a mutiny. We need to get him off the team immediately. I’ll be surprised if he isn’t at a press conference holding up a jersey of an AFC team by Monday.

GET RID OF HIM
this bum needs to GO NOW….I fully agree that he is trying to start a mutiny and he needs to be gone ASAP…..comparing your situation to westbrook is downright ridiculous and banner(hate to say it) is right….the orginazatio is going to make certain “concessions” to its top producer…any one work in sales here? SAME thing….Brown is ridiculous when he signed the extension saying “this takes care of me and my family for life” and now its I want more money…he isn’t THAT good anyway….he gets beat in deep coverage…yeah he can hit but so what…didn’t we get rid of a GREAT talent (which sheldon isn’t) because he was trying to tear apart the team( Hello Mr.Owens)? Brown is expendable and i just thing he is trying to bitch his way out of here like peters did to get here…but reality is….if we trade him…does he really think another team is going to rework his contract and cough up big bucks for a 30yr old corner who has NEVER made the pro bowl??? yeah some team might take him but their not going to take him, rework the contract and pay him this huge amount….he must be dilusinal…i really wonder what he feels the outcome of all this could be…seriously what good could possibly come out of this for him?
richman ...
… I was wondering the same thing. How much exactly does he have to gain by this?
If the Birds trade him, it has to be to a team that is willing to pay him more … and how much more I guess depends on how corner-desperate they are. But he still won’t be one of the highest-paid CBs in the league I don’t think.
So if he goes to a crappy team that has a faint shot at the Super Bowl, for a couple mil more per year … is he really going to be happier? Or will he end up like Trotter, regretting he wasted two of his prime seasons when he really liked being in Philly?
Not to mention Sheldon has turned himself from a guy revered in Philly to someone who might get spit on out in public in about a week. Aren’t there ways for a smart businessman to profit from the good PR of being a well-liked player in a big market like Philadelphia? If I had that image, I might protect it at all costs, because that seems to hold its value even after you can no longer play (i.e. Elway’s car dealership, Trotter’s car washes, et. al.)
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
forgot to mention
bye, dawk those pics and club is hilarious
