Gonzo traded to Falcons
From Roto World:
Falcons acquired TE Tony Gonzalez from the Chiefs in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
There had been reports the Eagles had offered a 3rd round pick in this years draft for Tony Gonzalez, and that was the high offer on the table. I thought a third was about as much value as the Cheifs were going to get for Gonzo, but appearnelty the Falcons were willing to give up more. The 2nd rounder next year seems like a bit of a comprimise between a 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder this year, as next year's picks are usually valued at 80% the value of the same pick this year.

Oh well
We still need a TE but I think a 2nd rounder was a little high for a guy with three years left. Luckily this draft is very deep with tight ends. I know Pettigrew is the best but I’d rather go after Moreno and pick up a TE in the 2nd or 3rd. What do you guys think?
I see the Eagles picking at TE up in the 3rd round too.

That sucks
I guess a 2nd rounder next yr is too high of a price to pay for the leagues best TE?
I dunno if best is the accurate term this late in Gonzo’s career. At one time he was, but now I would rate Dallas Clark and Antonio Gates higher.

I totally agree with Simmons
I dont’ conside Gonzo to be the best tight right now. I like Celek, he looked really good in the postseason.
Gonna miss Dawk a WHOLE lot next year..

WHAT!?!?!
I thought Tony Gonzo was too much of a fit for our Eagles. And does anybody think we will find a TE that will be as good as Tony Gonzo for the next 3 years? And then do you believe, if we take a TE in the 2nd round, will he ever resemble Tony Gonzo’s blocking ability, catching ability and toughness???
I think we passed on a GREAT opportunity.

ALSO!!!!!!!
IF the Falcons do well this year, that 2nd round draft pick will be worth even less than it is predicted today. So this trade may actually turn out to be like a very late 2nd draft pick which is almost like an early 3rd rounder-ish.

if anyone thought the eagles were going to trade a 2nd round pick for a thirty something year old tight end has been paying attention this year. Who cares, we are still the best team in the NFC.

DeSEAN JACKSON THE 10NE
Exactly ...
A 2nd is to high for us …we might need that If Moreno is gone and we need Brown or McCoy
… If Moreno is gone, we either take Pettigrew or trade back from the 21 and pick up some more picks, hopefully something that can be spun into the running back we need.
Honestly, I want them to come away from the first day with an RB and a TE who can contribute immediately. Tony G obviously would have fit that bill … but if they get Pettigrew and the next Westbrook, I’ll live.

We can’t trade our 2nd as RB is too big a need and we can’t count on Moreno being there in the first.

I completely agree with...
D3Keith. I have a gut feeling we’re going with pettigrew in the first, and somehow trading up to get one of the top 4 running backs. (moreno, brown, mccoy, and wells) in that order
Representing CANADA eh?
Meh
Eagles probably should have made this trade as Gonzo is still one of the top three TE’s in football(along with Witten and Gates), but overall, they have more needs with their second pick then a TE. This draft isn’t too top heavy with TE’s, but they could potentially get a decent one in the third if they don’t take Pettigrew.

Why would the Chiefs take a second next year when the Falcons were obviously open to giving them one this year? Maybe the Birds made their offer and the Falcons were willing to beat it.

I'm back and forth on this
I hate giving up picks, but this “build for the future” crap can get a little old when we’ve won ZERO SUPERBOWLS! A nice TE with the second or third round pick will take a couple years to blossom, right about the time #5 is hitting the scrap heap. Then what? A few years of patience only to lose that same TE in free agency?
I bleed green and I piss silver and blue
That's definitely a valid viewpoint ...
… Tony G might have been a two-year rental, which you usually hope for a little more from such an early pick, but by the same token it’s a very key two years, and you know exactly what you’re getting out of him for those two years.
I can go either way on this one. Would have loved to see him in Eagles green.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
We have a TE
Celek is going to be just fine, he’s shown he has potential, sure he doesn’t block too well but we just revamped our line and got a great FB so his lack of blocking skill isn’t that big of a deal anymore. It would have been nice to get Gonzo but we didn’t need him.
You can use two TEs in this league ...
… especially around the goal line. Heath Miller can’t get down the field like Brent Celek, but a dude like that would help us where we’ve been weakest the past two seasons … in the red zone.
Don’t discount blocking in short-yardage situations either … although as someone mentioned, with our new tackles, maybe that’s less of a concern now.

You know what stinks?
The Falcons were the main team we had to worry about snagging a TE between 21 and 28. Not saying I would rather undo the Peters deal and come away with Moreno and Pettigrew, just pointing that out …
I’m becoming more and more OK with the idea of one of these second-round TEs, or the idea of Pettigrew and then try to trade back into the end of the 1st to get Donald Brown.
I still want an RB and TE early, clearly :)

Yes and no ...
… Disappointed that Sheldon forced the Eagles’ hand like this, but not disappointed because I know tackles, corners, D-Line and quarterbacks are the positions the Eagles prefer to spend on … no matter what their roster situation appears to be.
How’s that for riding the fence?
I honestly think it’s hard to judge their pre-draft moves without knowing the whole story. When the dust settles, by Monday … there could be some legitimate disappointment there.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
I think we were either getting a FB or TE. Gonzo or Weaver. Weaver was cheaper and younger. I think Weavers abilities will be versatile enough that we’ll see him used in a lot of different ways this year. I still like where we are.

Thats actually a very smart comment. I could see Weaver very well playing blocking TE with his receiving skills.

Or maybe not actually lining up as a TE ...
… but using his blocking abilities to take the assignments the TE would have had on certain plays, and same with out-of-the-backfield short routes.
That comforts me some.

I honestly think they over paid, they must think they are closer to Superbowl than I do. That second round pick could have really helped there defense out.
ATLs offense was at the top of the league while their defense was at the bottom. Gonzo helps them no doubt I just think they over paid.

i’m not so sure…..i think i agree, Whodie, that Atl’s offense is strong and needed defensive help, BUT this was a 2010 draft pick that they gave up. I think that they may have something up there sleeves for this draft (trade) because they kept their picks intact for this year.

Atlanta should have a nice potent offense this season, I agree. Even though they might need defensive help more than offensive weapons, I like that they are bringing in weapons to build a support system for Matt Ryan, he really could come into his own even more this season. Too bad Asante will have to intercept him and bring it to the house.

Eagles are in win NOW mode
Getting Gonzalez would have guaranteed us at least 75 catches 900 yards 8+ TDs for the next 2 years. Not to mention his blocking skills. Celek or any TE we draft wont give us that. I’m done thinking about the future. Above average team for 10 years since Andy Reid took over, I would trade it all for 1 Super Bowl.
Taking Route 36 will bring you to Touchdown,PHI
i agree that we are in win NOW mode. But dont most teams take that stance? They attempt to field the best team that they can, built from the draft, and hopefully one that consistently contend. The Eagles have done that…they just havent closed the door. I like every move that we’ve made thus far, and non-move for that matter. When it comes down to it..the Eagles HAVE been good enough each of the past several years to win the Superbowl. (The win NOW.) We just havent done it…

I rec’d your post.
Been saying the same thing for a while. They are good enough to win it, or they THINK they are and get the same rude awakening most years that we get.
Their key is never mortgage the future for a shot at now … which I guess makes sense because one injury or bad break could wreck your shot at now, and then you have no now and no future.
But on the other side, it does get frustrating seeing the whole future thing happen when we’ve only got a couple years of McNabb and Westbrook left.
Then again, if they draft Westbrook’s successor this year, and sell out in a couple years for a top QB (assuming Kolb isn’t that guy), then all their moves make sense.
Also if we actually win one, it justifies everything they’ve done, more or less …

thank ya sir…and the entire thing is a high wire act that these front office guys do. its nice to have been up there all of these years, but at one point or another we have to get to the other side to appreciate it…

I have to disagree with you there. What you describe above is the generic “win” mode. When you see “win-now” mode, you know it. You can tell when a team is working toward the future, and when a team is working toward a superbowl. “Win-now” teams will sacrifice picks from next years draft, similar to what Atlanta just did. They will also stockpile picks and blow them all at once on impact players, similar to what the Eagles are doing (hopefully). Theres a certain air around a team that is playing for THIS season, and you can definitely tell when you see it.
Most teams are trying to maintain a balance between competitiveness this season and competitiveness in the next few seasons. If you pull the trigger too much in one offseason, you might be left with very little the next year. “Win-now” teams throw that mentality aside and maximize all at once.
And there are also “Win-later” teams which we dont need to go into…cough Oakland.

Did anybody mention Gonzalez's contract?
vs. the price of a low-first or second-round rookie’s? (or third, or what have you)
I haven’t Googled the numbers, but I bet it’s a hefty deal, and if the Eagles believe that money can be more wisely spent (although they were obviously willing to pay him for the price of a third-rounder), then I guess I can stomach it.
I’m starting to familiarize myself with an early draft haul of

the 2nd round in the 2010 draft IS a WAY different story.
Honestly, I didn’t even think about next year’s picks. I think for our sake, we need that 2nd rounder this year on the off chance we don’t get what we want in the first round. Next year’s 2nd round is definitely on the board. Ugh, we could have afforded a 2nd round next year definitely.
Gotta agree with you there ...
… maybe the Eagles’ thinking is that’s one fewer year they could get from a rookie.
Given how hit-or-miss they’ve been in the second and third round, they maybe should have considered an automatic “hit.”

The one thing that i really hate from this enitre debate is the “Round” in which a guy is picked. There’s a 32-35 pick difference from the first pick of a Round to the Last. Being that the Falcons are poised to be pretty good, it will essentially be a high 50’s or maybe low 60’s pick….not like the 33rd or 34th pick. It just irks me that Tony G MAY be worth either a 34th or 64th…TBD. blah. sorry….

Yeah I know. Atlanta is scary. Easily one of the better teams in the NFC. Now that they got a TE they can concentrate a little more on defense which is what they lacked last year. Expect atleast 1 wild card spot to go to the NFC South.
Good? Yeah. Scary?
Who knows.
Lots of times when you see a team that did what Atlanta did last year — take a huge, unexpected jump — they fall back to the pack the next season. Not saying that it’s going to happen to Atlanta, but you do see it happen a whole lot.
But it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say a wild card spot would go to the NFC South, considering that Atlanta was a wild card out of the South this past season. Carolina’s a very good team if Delhomme isn’t playing like crap, Atlanta’s coming off a great season, and when you have Drew Brees and that New Orleans offense, you’ve always got a chance.
I’m interested in seeing what Matt Ryan does this year. I think he was grossly overrated last season. He did a solid job, and managed the game behind a good running game. Just because Mike Vick killed some dogs, and Matt Ryan beat some mediocre teams, doesn’t mean he is the 2nd coming. He had a ton of hype all season long, but I found it very amusing in the playoffs while losing, when the announcers started admitting that Ryan really only played well when his team was ahead in the game.
Yeah, I wouldn't call them ...
… “Scary.”
Solid, yes. A team to watch, sure. A team to fear? Not so much.
I still think all four NFC East teams are capable of making the playoffs. Chicago and Minn. look good. The NFC South minus the Bucs could be trouble. And the West is still up in the air besides the Cardinals.
Of course, all that could change … but I think if the Eagles take care of business and are better than .500 in the tight games, there isn’t any reason why we can’t make the playoffs and potentially get a bye.
Bottom line is hardly anyone the past two years has kicked the Eagles’ asses. All but three of their 15 losses (NFCCG included) were close games they failed to close out.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Big mistake...
Eagles screwed up this one. A 2nd round pick next year for arguably the best TE in football ? Eagles blew this one badly. Now they HAVE to get a WR if they are serious about contending because I doubt any ROOKIE TE is coming into this offense and doing anything as great as what Tony G will do in Atlanta. I dont care who the Eagles draft…Unless I see a stud wideout in eagles green by monday I will be disappointed.
why is there this big "I WANT A WR" talk
personally, i love our guys(Desh, Curtis, Baskett, Avant, Celek) and west is the best receiving RB in the NFL. i only want them to get Knowshun because west is 30 and is getting old. i dont think we need a WR or a TE, we have the best depth on WR and have the best OL in the league too. and all the people that agree with Mcnabb who keeps bitching about his squad, maybe you need to look at the QB and see if hes going to be a QB that can win it. we’ve seen him chock way too much and he’ll never admit that he cant throw an accurate pass. so before you tell me that we need a better receiving corps, ask yourself if we need a better QB. look at Brady, he won most of his chips with average WR’s.
ps. who knows, i think that Jackson can be a great WR, next Steve Smith
yeah i mean this offseason was totally useless… who are all of these morons on this team anyway? Jason Peters? Pfft. Stacy Andrews? Blah… and who is this Leonard Weaver guy anway? Ya know, it would have really been nice if the Eagles forked out some money and got a few Pro Bowl caliber players this offseason… Pathetic. I’m with you man… Sign me up… If I don’t see an overvalued WR in an Eagles uniform by Monday, I call this offseason a failure…

This is one of those good “trades that didn’t happen” for the Eagles…sometimes the deal you don’t do is as important as the deal you get done…Celek is serviceable, and the draft is an option…there’s also always a TE that gets bumped by a change in formation/attitude…Gonzo is special, no doubt, but 2nd rounder is just too much compensation for a guy his age, IMHO.
