Eagles offer response to Sheldon Brown trade demand

Not sure whether this was distributed to the entire media, but this is the Eagles response to Sheldon Brown's trade request that Bob Brookover posted.

It’s very unfortunate and counterproductive that Sheldon has chosen to go public with his feelings about his situation," the team said in a statement. "After thorough evaluation by himself and discussions with his family and agents, he chose to accept an extension of his rookie contract early that provided his family financial security for the rest of his life. It removed any concerns about health or performance that all other players in his draft class had to worry about. He has three years remaining on that contract and, after taking the signing bonus and his first two years of salary into account, we feel that Sheldon is being paid fairly. Focusing only on a player’s salary for a given year is not a valid analysis.
There have been league MVP’s, Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, and perennial Pro Bowlers who have been in a similar situation. All of their teams have required them to wait until their contract expired or there was only one year remaining before any adjustment took place. It is only in the most extraordinary, in fact, less than a handful of circumstances in the last ten years that any players two new years into a contract with three years left have been adjusted. We don’t think this qualifies as an extraordinary circumstance.
Sheldon’s comments under the circumstances actually serve to devalue him in a trade if we were willing to consider it; which we are not.”

In other words... The Eagles response is, "no."

Brookover correctly points out that this response is kind of odd from the Eagles, considering their normal response to such things is total silence.

brutal

those are some harsh words by the birds, but i can see where theyre coming from, i see sheldons side too. this is a real tricky situation. hopefully it will just pass over but hearing words like that most likely wont win sheldons attitude over.

well it's the eagles' call

so according to everything that we both know, he is not gone. he is still an eagle and will remain one until at least the end of the season. there is no one that can replace sheldon brown’s ability as a cb and i wish he would shut his face. strong words from the eagles. they arent happy.

Funny

They don’t like how he went public but they sure had no problem firing back in the public eye. It does seem out of the norm for them. As usual, there is something more here than meets the eye.

It's an irritating situation, one that needed to be nipped in the ass immediately.

What isn’t being realized here is the fact that this is the Eagles’ business policy; it’s what made them so successful in the salary cap era. You draft a gifted player, the gifted player proves his talent and work ethic will transfer to the NFL, and you approach him with a contract extension early. This is to avoid paying the player more down the road, in clump sums, and instead spreading out their payment to the player from their second or third year to their seventh or eighth.

This policy has worked for the Eagles, and should continue to work. It makes sense they’d be frustrated and angry about it, because constant complaints about contracts that are signed will lead to their whole business platform being shattered, and for no real reason. The Eagles pay you sooner than any other franchise, and in turn you make a little less over the course of an entire contract. Not a lot less, a little less. Instant financial security is worth that trade-off in any economy.

Sheldon is, quite frankly, being ridiculous. If he wanted to wait to cash in on a bigger signing bonus when he got out of his rookie contract, his agent should have informed him that when you sign a contract for six years and get paid earlier than every player in your draft class outside the top-5, it’s pretty much common decency to work through that contract.

Sheldon doesn’t have any ground to stand on here. That’s why the response from the front office was instant and critical of his attempt. It had to be.

by cwel87 on Apr 21, 2009 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that’s a pretty big “Sit down and shut up”. Sheldon really doesn’t have a lot to stand on with this one, I think. I think he’s just gonna have to play it out. There are plenty of players in worse situations than his. I don’t think the Eagles are being unreasonable at all.

I actually don't either ...

If performance-based pay were fair, Sheldon would be entitled to immediately withdraw money directly from Jerome McDougle and Winston Justice’s bank accounts.

i dont think so.

with what theyve done in the offseason i think the birds are really giving this a shot this year, and i dont see how moving him will benefit at all to this years team, i think theyll hold on to him this year and take a look at it this offseason. unless sheldon absolutely blows up.

by ABails8 on Apr 20, 2009 6:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That end part is important. If he will man up and play hard, then the team is better with him. If he’s going to blow up and become the 4th corner its better for the team and team chemistry if he’s gone.

Agree

I don’t see Sheldon as this type of guy, but if he blows off the year like Lito did, we’re not in a good position. I hate to let players force our hand and sever ties with guys we really like, but I don’t see a really great Plan B. I see an okay one (Ike or rook at nickel with Hanson starting)

I guess this explains the pursuit of Bryant McFadden and the interest in Sean Smith, et. al.

I've read that statement 4 times now, and they're not handling this well...
He has three years remaining on that contract and, after taking the signing bonus and his first two years of salary into account, we feel that Sheldon is being paid fairly. Focusing only on a player’s salary for a given year is not a valid analysis.

That part is fine. It’s a little aggressive, but it’s a valid point.

It is only in the most extraordinary, in fact, less than a handful of circumstances in the last ten years that any players two new years into a contract with three years left have been adjusted. We don’t think this qualifies as an extraordinary circumstance.

That’s fine, too.

But here’s the part that’s going to bite them…

There have been league MVP’s, Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, and perennial Pro Bowlers who have been in a similar situation. All of their teams have required them to wait until their contract expired or there was only one year remaining before any adjustment took place.

“MVP’s, Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, perennial Pro Bowlers” – They’re basically telling Brown, “Look buddy, a lot of players that are better than you didn’t bitch, so why would we listen to you?” That’s totally counter-productive. Brown is a great player – The Eagles can make their point without noting accomplishments that have alluded him. It’s only going to fan the flames.

by Bye, Dawk :( on Apr 20, 2009 6:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, they made it pretty damn personal when he just asked to be traded. He did not say “I want to be traded because the organization is ‘classless’ or has not won a Super Bowl.” It just seems like a harsh response and one that will not make it easy for Sheldon to just shut up. It will be human nature to fire back and to keep doing so. Before it was a business move. Now it is personal as well. Again, who knows what happened behind the scenes but from what we have seen, they are coming off looking like bigger a-holes than he is.

he picked the wrong time to get upset with his contract

I don’t think on the open market he will get a huge deal on the open market I mean he is 30. This is so frustrating that he is doing this now I mean come on.

by homestar2281 on Apr 20, 2009 6:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The only logic I can think of ...

… is that the Eagles just gave out a gang of money to other guys, and he knows they NEED him this year. Perhaps he’s tried to get his deal reworked and wasn’t getting anywhere and tried to force their hand. If he’s going to do that, he has to do it before the draft so he can be traded for picks or whatever.

The crappy part is the Eagles are very much ready to win now, so we can’t afford to start a rookie or a sub-par player at CB. Maybe at Nickel if Hanson becomes a starter, but I like it better with Sheldon here.

And honestly, how much money do you need?

Im just so tired of this shit, the NFL has become so money driven at all levels.

wanna choose from more then 4 games to watch on a sunday? no problem just pay X amount of dollars a month for sunday ticket.

wanna get real coverage that isnt ESPN BS? no problem, just spend even more money for NFL network, that is…if your cable company carrys it.

Wanna go to a game? no problem…just give us your next paycheck and maybe you can get two tickets in the nosebleed section…that is…if corporation X hasnt leased out that whole section

Wanna watch the game on TV? no problem, just sit through 2 hours of commercials with an hour of football thrown in there somewhere.

every stadium is named after some massive corporation and now they want to start putting advertisements on uniforms. we really arent far away from rooting for the Philadelphia Tastycakes.

I don’t want to make any sweeping generalizations but I’m willing to bet most of us that post on here aren’t millionaires. and Yet we spend money on merchandise, tickets, etc. and do everything we can to support the teams we love. meanwhile, the players who’s salarys we are paying for complain and gripe that 5 million a year isnt enough to feed their family.

Players always talk about winning a championship as the ultimate goal. How do our players expect to win a championship if every one of them wants a raise everytime he has a good season. Its crap.

by njh3293 on Apr 20, 2009 6:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Truth.

+1

I couldn’t agree more. As an example, take soccer in Europe. There are two uninterrupted 45 minute halves; pick your choice of team and their stadium is probably named something like Anfield, Whitehart Lane, Estadio do Dragao, the San Siro, Camp Nou, etc. – sure as hell beats Pizza Hut Park; and the games are all broadcast on national television – not to mention that the big games are pretty much national holidays in their respective cities.
They’re making so much money that American team owners are buying their teams. There are clearly a lot of differences, but I’m fed up to the fucking gills with having sponsors and commercials stuffed down my throat. I saw the “Sea of Hands” game the other day on ESPN Classic. Just watching a broadcast from that different time always astounds me.

And the players – I just don’t understand it. I understand it more from CEO’s; it’s no more valid from them but I understand that they’re generally upper-crust people whose backgrounds, chosen profession, sense of self-worth is all tied to money -so you know they’re never going to get enough. But from athletes? You’re out there playing the sport you love as a job. How many millions are enough to say “You know what? Fuck it, I’m set for money, I just want to go out there with these guys, kick ass, take names, and bring home rings. I love this town, I have hundreds of thousands of fans who give their time, their money, their emotional commitment just to watch me go out there and put my heart on the field. This is as good as it gets.”

C’mon man, company logos are on soccer jerseys and all over the pitch!

Their game lends itself to non-interruption a lot better than football, basketball and baseball, which all feature natural breaks in the action anyway.

Not saying you’re completely off base, but consider the whole picture.

Yeah, they have logos on their jerseys, but that’s about it. I’d take that, mutatis mutandis, over spending 180 minutes watching 60 minutes of football.
It’s a different situation as I mentioned, so it’s not entirely comparable, but I’d be interested in knowing how the length of the broadcast for major sporting events has changed over the years. TV timeouts aren’t natural breaks.

From Sheldon’s standpoint he is making 2 mil this year… for the type of player he is that is very VERY low. however he did sign the extension back in 04 which gave him that 7 million bonus.. so to say play out the contract you signed is a valid agrument from the FO.. I hope they can work something out our D will take a pretty big step back in the secondary if Sheldon is not here.

The market for 30 year old corners isn’t exactly burning up.

I Don't Think So

Maybe before the Cardinals signed Bryant McFadden as a FA from the Steelers to a 2-year/$10m deal.
http://www.azcardinals.com/news/detail.php?PRKey=2928

They’ve got Rodgers-Cromartie on the other side and now Rod Hood is their 3rd corner.
(Adrian Wilson and Antawn Rolle are the safeties.)

I think they’re pretty well set in the secondary. They’ll probably a draft pick or two to develop, but what they don’t need is Sheldon Brown.

In my mind, this public statement is totally reasonable. Sheldon Brown basically stabbed this organization in the back. The key part of this statement for me is this:

After thorough evaluation by himself and discussions with his family and agents, he chose to accept an extension of his rookie contract early that provided his family financial security for the rest of his life. It removed any concerns about health or performance that all other players in his draft class had to worry about.

You chose to accept a contract that gave you an early form of financial security that very few athletes your age received. You were young and still unproven at that point, but the Eagles rewarded you with a nice extension anyway. You accepted the benefits of EARLY financial security, moved on with your career, and had much success with the Eagles. Then you decide to ask them for more money because you see free agents getting paid more than you?

This is Sheldon’s fault for accepting a contract and not honoring it like he should. At the time, his contract was very generous and most importantly – it gave a lot of wealth to a young player who didn’t have much tenure in the league. Apparently that just isn’t enough anymore. Too bad he won’t get his way, this statement shows that the Eagles will NOT allow him to have his cake and eat it too…

Ugh, just saw this about an hour ago ...

… this was the fastest I could get here.

My first thought: “So much for BGN’s annointment of Sheldon as the new defensive leader.”

Also, maybe now Sean Smith is a stronger possibility in the second round.

Also, I haven’t read all the above, but perhaps they can get this worked out.

On one hand, it stinks to make $2 mill if the guy across from you is making whatever portion of $57 million Asante gets this year. On the other, the Eagles went out on a limb somewhat by locking up/extending Lito and Sheldon early, and those guys accepted the deals and the accompanying signing bonus. It’s understood that you don’t have to give that back even if you never live up to it.

Also makes just about everything Sheldon said during Lito’s ordeal sound like total BS. Although it makes sense why he tried to stay out of it for the most part.

Here's the full AP story

this is all I had to go on for the above. Looking forward to reading the statement and y’alls take:

Eagles’ response to Brown’s trade request: No!

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles have no intention of trading disgruntled cornerback Sheldon Brown, who says he wants out after the team refused to re-negotiate his contract.
Brown is scheduled to make $2 million this season, the first of four remaining on the extension he signed in 2004. The deal included a $7.5 million signing bonus.
Brown told ESPN.com Monday he has asked to be traded. Later in the day, the Eagles responded with a statement.
The team called Brown’s decision to go public with his situation "unfortunate and counterproductive," and explained how the extension he signed in 2004 "removed any concerns about health or performance that all other players in his draft class had to worry about."
Earlier this offseason, the Eagles traded cornerback Lito Sheppard, who also wanted his contract redone, to the Jets. Sheppard and Brown were drafted in 2002 in the first and second rounds, respectively.
The Eagles acquired Asante Samuel last year to replace the injury-prone Sheppard. But they were unable to trade Sheppard, a two-time Pro Bowler who finished his final season in Philadelphia playing primarily on special teams.
A starter since 2004, Brown has played in 112 straight games, the second-longest active streak among active cornerbacks behind Tampa Bay’s Ronde Barber (176).

Wow, that’s a hell of a stat there, the 112.

sheldon brown on his initial contract...

November 4, 2004
The Eagles signed Sheldon Brown to a six-year contract extension on Thurday, according to the AP. “It’s a good thing for not only myself but my family,” Brown said. “The most important part is that I’m glad the Eagles believe in me. Now I’m more anxious to prove that I can be worthy of the signing.”

this can be taken a couple different ways….I guess Sheldon feels like he’s proven himself above and beyond…

by SilkPhantom on Apr 20, 2009 9:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

There is another thing to consider as well. Sheldon knows that in a few years when his contract is near its end that his age will come into question and he might not get that blockbuster deal that he is clearly after. He is trying to get that last big contract to fininsh off his career with, not the “chump change” that he thinks he will get a few years from now as an aging CB. Of course chump change to an NFL athlete is a lifetime of sustenance for most of us….sigh

Here is the deal. I believe in Sheldon. Personally, I think he is a grossly underrated CB. However, he took an extension early to offer him financial security for the rest of his life. The Eagles took a chance on him now. Now, he has to take a chance and play well for next two years and then get a new contract. It is a contract. You signed it, live with it.

I think Sheldon is an important part of this team and will be important to our Super Bowl run this year!

He’s bought into the whole the Eagles don’t extend and/or pay many players after they’ve hit 30 philosophy…. Period.

Brown Fires Back

Let the media battle begin!

In response to this little tidbit from Joe Banner…

Sheldon’s comments under the circumstances actually serve to devalue him in a trade if we were willing to consider it; which we are not

Sheldon came back with a pretty decent burn…

As for diminishing his trade value by speaking out, Brown said the Eagles just traded for Buffalo tackle Jason Peters, who held out last summer, with three years left on a contract. “They just traded for a guy who diminished his trade value last year,” Brown said.

I have to admit, Sheldon is quick on his feet and tells it like it is, even though he is being a greedy SOB right now.

I’m starting to think Sheldon might hold out come training camp time. First he sees Lito complain about his contract and eventually get traded to the Jets for more money, and now he sees Peters haul in the payday after holding out with the Bills. Let’s hope he keeps a level head.

The Eagles evaluate talent early, and lock it up long term with a few years left on the rookie contract that only pays a few hundred k a year. Sheldon was able to sign a big contract 3 years before his rookie contract expired and everything the Eagles said is true. If anyone understands this, I think it is Sheldon.

Something really bad had to happen to make this guy angry.

Compromise

Both sides have valid points. Sheldon just signed that contract two years ago, back when it looked like salaries would be low because of the cap AND when he was no where near free agency. Since then, cap money has loosened up, CB’s are getting paid including teammates, and Brown has played even better then expected. So tweak his deal. Keep it to four years, add some money but mostly in achievable bonuses. No need to bring it up to Asante Samuels deal, because he got his through free agency. But there shouldn’t be 30+ corners in the league paid more then your best corner and a team leader at that.

I don’t think Brown has a point. He had a choice when they offered him an extension 2 years ago. He was fine to take it then. He needs to shut up and play football.

I’m getting a little sick of this crap. Dude, you’re an F’in millionaire, and if you don’t go and do something stupid, your kids will be millionaires too. What more can you ask for? (oh wait, you ARE asking for more)

If SB would have snapped his leg the day after he signed the last contract, would he say “I’m not worth all that money”, and give it back?

Time’s yours…

Don’t these agents ever learn? The Eagles are the stubbornest organization in sports when it comes to these things. They do not negotiate. EVER. All it does is cause unnecessary drama. I love Sheldon and want him to stay. Is that so much to ask?
