The Linc 4.11.09 - No sweaty back guy edition

Time for a weekend edition of the Linc, this time with cute Eagles girls back by popular demand... sorry sweaty backed tattoo guy.

3016319_medium I got a chance to review a brand new mock draft app on the itunes store. It's a app for your ipod/iphone that lets you run your own 7 round mock draft, follow the actual draft live, and get lots of info about prospects as well as highlight videos. I did our own BGN community mock draft on the app and posted it here. I really think it's a lot of fun. For for more info on the app and to try it for free check out the Mock Draft App website. Hank Baskett took his bride to be to the shooting range to learn how to... shoot. She blogged about the experience and posted a bunch of a photos. (KendraWilkinson.com)

I'm not a fan of moving up in any draft

Especially not this year. The difference between Monroe and Britton is not worth the sacrifice of another first-round caliber player like Knowshon Moreno. This isn’t even my opinion, it’s pretty much fact.

Um.
This isn’t even my opinion, it’s pretty much fact.

You can never say that about anything regarding the draft, not when 50% of all first round players turn out to be busts.

by ajay on Apr 11, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes I can.

If you have two picks in the first round, that’s 50% chance + 50% chance. That allows for ~ a 75% shot at hitting on at least one of the two picks. One pick is a 50% chance. The difference between the first pick of the draft down to about the 70th pick is team scouting. And invested money.

It’s fact.

Um… no. You’re pretty wrong here. I’m not going to break down the concept of probability here for you, but let’s look at a simple example. If you flip a coin, it’s a 50/50 chance it’s heads. Say it comes up heads. If you flip it again, it’s still only a 50/50 chance that it comes up tails the next time. Just because you got heads the first time doesn’t mean your chances of tails increase the second time.

"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel

even further if you look at the picks as two separate coins the probability of flipping heads on both is 1/2 X 1/2 = 1/4 so his logic was flawed from the word Yes.

"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"

Actually

I think he was saying you have a 75% chance of one of two picks succeeding….which, if that’s what he’s arguing, is correct. Your application of probability is flawed. Yes, each individual probability is 50/50, but when both picks are viewed in succession, the chances of AT LEAST ONE succeeding is greater than 50%. And what Whodie below just computed was the probability of BOTH (or neither) picks succeeding.

In this case since it’s 50/50, the probability of both / neither picks succeeding = .5 *.5 = .25
The probability of at least one pick succeeding is 1-.25 = .75

So, when you flip a coin twice in a row, the chances that one of those two flips (or in the case, draft picks) will be heads (NOT a bust) is greater than the individual probability of 50/50.

I wouldn’t crucify the Eagles if they said, Listen Chiefs, If Monroe is there at 4 we’ll give you both of our firsts. There’s nothing further to negotiate, if you’re interested we’ll pull the trigger, if you’re not we’ll make do with what we have.

Because the talent is going to be pretty solid in the 20-30 range, I’m throwing the value chart out this year. Win win situation either way.

Plus

Tom Heckert said that now a days it costs less than ever to move up into the early 1st round because teams don’t want to make a massive financial commitment to unproven players. You could theoretically get a guy like Monroe with only a 1st and a 2nd. That would still leave us with a 1st rounder.

That scenario

Is wayyy too optimistic – even all things considering…

If we can get our next 10 or so year starting LT we need to take that opportunity

I understand what you all are saying but a LT is more important than a back up running back and I don’t think that any of the lower first round LT are guaranties.

I'd love to see the next 10-year LT ...

… but I think “backup running back” is a guy who splits time with Westbrook and is groomed to eventually take over.

Is a 7-year RB more of a need now than a potential 10-year tackle? Hard to say … either one could flame out.

No way

I’ll take a 10 year pro bowl LT over a RB ANY day of the week!!! Good RBs are not scare, a REALLY good young tackle IS.

I don't like Monroe's hit-chance any more than I like Britton's.

Granted, Monroe has HoF-potential as opposed to a couple potential All-Pro seasons from Britton, but it’s about winning football games, and giving our running game more versatility as well as our line a potential force is, in my opinion, going to help us more.

by cwel87 on Apr 11, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well thats just insane. Monroe is the guy who was so good it moved Alberts to G. Britton and Smith have been labeled better tackle prospects then Jake Long was last year.

Britton is a little to goofy footed to be that good.

by Clyde Simmons on Apr 14, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed I think Monroe is the only true number 1 pick in this draft (hence why I took him number 1 overall)

Martellus Bennett

His commentary about women farting (femfarts) might be even better than South Park’s.

Jason, thanks for the return of cute Eagles girls. I can resume adding pages to the book of women I can marry.

The Maize & Brew thing ...

… is a long but interesting take on the future of sports blogging if the MSM is no longer there to feed it items. Interesting because it doesn’t hand-feed you a conclusion …
