Eagles fire employee because of Dawkins' release

On profootballtalk.com, Mike Florio has a report up that a 'seasonal' Eagles employee was recently fired because he displayed outrage on his facebook page at the release of Dawkins. It seems as if the Eagles are piling up the PR crises. This will enrage many fans even more. What do you guys think? This kind of gets me a bit heated again, as it just continues to show an amazing amount of arrogance.

Sorry guys, I don’t know why it double posted. My humble apologies, I am merely a servant…

It's on the Inky too

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/eagles/20090309_Gonzo___Cold_Eagles_sure_are_thin-skinned.html

On the one hand, he criticized the team publicly which any employee should get reprimanded for…on the other hand, he’s a seasonal employee and firing him is a bit harsh.

Those Eagles don’t fuck around.

Me three ...

… Someone told me this and expected me to flip, and I was pretty ‘meh’ on it.

On one hand, I suppose it’s a bit cruel. On the other, it’s another case of not being dumb with facebook.

I’m a huge Dawkins fan, always have been and always will be. But the Eagles have a great track record for things like this. It’s not like he couldn’t resign here again, he was offered a contract. So why is everyone so upset at the FO on this one? All he had to do was sign the papers, sure he wanted more money but who doesn’t?? Look I hope the Dawkins has a great couple of years in Denver (except when he plays the birds), but I’m also not all that upset at the FO on this one. They offered Dawkins a contract and he didn’t accept it. I believe Jason, a week or two ago, had a really good write up about this also.

I'm addicted to Facebook.

Don’t friend your superiors on Facebook. That’s the bottom line. Screw around with your friends on Facebook OR use it for professional networking. It’s a pain when you try to use it for both or you’re friends with a bunch of coworkers and superiors that you don’t want to see a bunch of your drinking pictures.

If you are going to friend coworkers, make sure you set your status updates or anything “incriminating” so its invisible to your coworkers.

A couple weeks ago, I was really mad at my job and had my status set as “Brian thinks Big Consulting Company can to hell.” You’re damn sure I set my privacy settings so no one from work could see it.

This guy made a stupid mistake. That said, he’s a seasonal worker who is primarily a FAN. He probably works at that job BECAUSE he’s a fan and he reacted like a fan. (It’s not like someone “corporate” like Spadaro or Tom Heckert had that on their website).

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

This would require Spadaro to have a mind of his own … finger puppet.

ya know
Don’t friend your superiors on Facebook.

I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY by what some people post on the profiles… pics and comments etc… I mean seriously i’m amazed that a lot of the people i work with even have jobs.

Having a pic of you passed out over the toilet would make me want to fire you… just because if you dont care anymore about your personal image, you obviously dont give a crap about the image of the company

Yep. And it’s even a little more subtle than your example.

I joined facebook basically because it lets me chat with my friends online all day. I want to be able to post funny pictures from our college days. Facebook has really good custom privacy settings and I think you’re ok as long as you set your privacy setting so that:

1. Only your friends can see your profile — anything else just doesn’t make sense.
2. Set your photo albums individually so you can make them invisible to people you don’t want to see them — you can set each album individually. Therefore, my high school and college friends can see all my pictures, including the one at a friend’s wedding where 3 of us are doing our best air-guitar rendition of “What’s My Age Again?”, but my coworkers can’t see any album in which I might even be holding a beer.
3. Don’t use any embarrasing drinking picture as a profile pic, since anyone can see that.
4. Set it so certain people can’t see pictures other people tag of you — that way when my friend who less careful than I posts pictures from a raging kegger, my coworkers won’t see it.

Sorry for the slightly off-topic rant. I’m kind of dealing with this new because my boss and a couple coworkers recently “friended” me, so I just had to do all this stuff.

And honestly, it would have been 1 thing for this guy to post “X wishes the Eagles would have kept Dawkins” and “Eagles r retarded.”

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

This is the most overlooked point in here.

It’s probably the use of “retarted” that got him fired, as much as or more than wishing they hadn’t let Dawkins leave. Even the people who let Dawkins leave might even wish they hadn’t.

by D3Keith on Mar 10, 2009 1:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you

I work in the music industry and a number of my co-workers and colleagues (at least the younger/immature ones) think it’s a riot to post drunken pictures and say dumb shit on their Facebook profiles — even when their friends with their superiors. Just because it’s the music industry doesn’t mean that things should be lax or that it’s fuck around time — there needs to be a level of professionalism.

Company image is always important, and if I am looking from the outside in and I see a picture of someone doing body shots or saying something stupid, I am going to think twice about working with that company.

"In a couple of weeks or a month, I'll be excited about this team," Dawkins said. "I've got to get used to saying that -- I'm a Bronco." Then he paused. "I'll tell you one thing -- I'll always be an Eagle."

All this came about because an employee posted that the Eales were retarded for

let Dawkins walk. It was on his facebook account, and they fired him for it. I really don’t care, but you have to be carefull what you post on facebook and myspace under your profile, I heard that some employers go through that to see how employee interacts. You have to be carefull how you network yourself now and days.

On the other hand it is a great way to reach the masses, a fraternity brother of mine is running for Mayor of his town and is raising a lot of campaign money and getting support through Facebook. He also asked that I remove all pictures from our trip to New Orleans haha.

i dont know…I think this is stupid. he was only working in the stadium, not like he was actually working for the coaching staff or something. he’s merely expressing his frustration. its not like he said “the people who cook the hot dogs at the linc piss in the buns”. by this logic every player that says anything critical about the coaching staff or the front office should be cut.

C'mon

You are firing a guy for that? That is ridiculous. I have worked for several companies where employees have publicly complained. They get written up or a hand slap, but they don’t lose their jobs if they toe the line after the fact. What we don’t know is if this was an isolated incident for the guy or if he had other performance issues. We’ll never know that side of it. If I was to defend the Eagles in this scenario, I’d have to say there was more to it than this. Otherwise, this is just an issue of retribution.

Whodie, so it is about your value to the organization??? That makes even less sense. I’d almost take it the other way. If Andy Reid called Banner an idiot on national TV, there is more reason to fire him than a guy working the gate for expressing frustration on Facebook over a football decision.

And what is the Eagles brass doing on Facebook? Looking for a WR?

by Dawk on Mar 9, 2009 4:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Whodie, so it is about your value to the organization??

Sure I’m willing to give someone who is harder to replace more ground then some kid who can be replaced in 1 minute. It’s just business.

Good argument.

I'm not ready to move on from #20.

by LeonSA on Mar 9, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree

It is about the level of exposure AND the level of responsibility that the employee has. This guy would have had NO exposure other than to his buddies on Facebook. Apparently his boss was on his friends list. He also is not paid millions to represent the organization like the athlete or members of management.

Like I said, from experience I have seen this plenty of times. I have never seen a front line type of employee fired for complaining openly. Not unless they do it over and over and over. As a member of upper management or someone who publicly represents the face of the organization, you are expected to hold yourself to a higher standard. So, I cannot possibly see anyone’s side of this argument that this is ok. I especially cannot see that it would be ok for Andy Reid or a player but not for the guy taking tickets at the front gate. At the same time, I cannot believe this is all there is to it. This is Gonzo for crying out loud and we all know the tripe he puts out. We got one side of this story and I have a feeling there is much more to it.

How come nobody laughed at my WR joke?

by Dawk on Mar 9, 2009 5:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

meh

I was really just playing along because NJH forgot that TO was ostracized when he talked about the FO so no Players are not exempt, I continued when you inferred that Reid would be dumb or childish enough to make such a public statement.

This is no news who gives a shit, I believe you shouldn’t do something unless you are willing to face the consequences. I wouldn’t expect to be hanging around if I publicly called my bosses retards, not only is this a poor choice of words that definitely violates some of their corporate rules it is just flat out dumb.

I don’t disagree with you. It seems like a harsh action for a part time gate ticket taker… Without knowing anything about this guy or his history with the team, you would think a warning would have done the job…

At the same time, I can’t say that if I called my boss or company retards that I wouldn’t be fired on the spot. Also, I could get away with saying a lot more in the office than I could in public… I used to work for a company that flat out banned us from posting on a certain industry message board.

Seems like an extreme reaction by the Eagles

I’d be interested to see if the Eagles have a written policy regarding internet postings by their employees. After this, I’m sure they will. Many companies, especially financial/investment companies, have clear written policies regarding this type of behavior.

For a team that has a bit of a problem with PR (well, if you listen to WIP) this was probably an over-reaction. I see both sides on this issue and don’t really have a strong feeling for either side. The Eagles probably should have given the guy a rash of grief and explained to him that as an employee he is a representative of the organization and he can’t post stuff like that for various reasons. ie – bad for the organization’s image and retarted (he Cobbed it) is not considered a politically correct term.

The weak thing about the article was that it seemed to try to garner sympathy for the guy because he has a physical disability. His disability has nothing to do with the situation. I say that as a person with a physical disability. Don’t trot out the, “look they fired the poor disabled guy” schtick. If you violate a policy, you deserve to be fired disability or not.

Bunch Of Hypocrites

For everyone that bitches and complains, giving stupid comments like “I’m the biggest Eagles’ fan, but next year I’m hoping Denver wins the Superbowl” or “I’ve been a die hard fan for 42 years, but next year Pittsburgh is looking pretty good”, please shut up! You are not the biggest Eagles fan, you are not a die hard fan and we don’t want you on our side of the battle! And if you call your boss “retarted” then your ass must go. Retard!

Telling it to his face

and writing it on a networking site are two different things.

Why would even be an issue? Who really cares what the Security guard thinks anyway? I agree with Dawk he isn’t held in some kind of special light like a player or a coach. He is a average Joe. Working part-time!

This is just like the NFL laying off workers to “Trim the fat” or whatever, when they are making billions in profits. But like Whodie and my Company First Sergeant so eloquently said it, “It’s strictly business.”

What that really means is F everyone else.

Makes sense

Baron,

i agree with you. That was one other piece I forgot to mention. If he signed something that said he would not disparage the Eagles and it covered this type of activity, I’d be on the side of his bosses. Again, that is part of the story we did not hear. I absolutely agree with you on the disability piece. It was shameful to bring that out in the article. It has nothing to do with it either way.

As for you Midnight Green, he did not call a particular person a retard. He said the Eagles are retards. Based on his position, HIS boss has absolutely nothing to do with football personnel decisions. And while I completely agree with your assessment that those who are now cheering on Denver to beat the Eagles, I don’t think any Eagles fan is out of line for criticizing Joe Banner , Andy Reid, or any member of the Eagles. It is no different than criticizing Reno Mahe or Greg Lewis.

I have always been the “biggest” fan just like the rest of you. I will never, ever have any capacity to cheer on another team no matter what happens in life. I have, however, become disenchanted with the current regime of mgmt. I can no longer support them blindly just because they work for the Eagles.

The Eagles FO overreacted as usual. It seems like they have a need to control everything. The guy is a passionate Eagles and was hurt and disappointed like most of us and expressed it.He didnt go on the 6 oclock news or anything like that he posted it on face book . Hardly anyone would be aware of it had they just let it go. They should feel fortunate their fans care about this team the way they do, which is something this ownership does not deserve.

The fans need to make a point to the FO

This is just one more example of the front office not having a clue about the fans and why they are the way they are.If you look at the players that the fans truly love to see on the field they have one thing in common they are do or die leave it all on the field players.DMac is the best QB the Eagles have ever had period but still doesn’t get the fans loyalty because he’s having “fun” out there.Dawkins pisses us off more because nobody showed that it’s them or me mentality like he does AND he was the last on the team.Sheldon hits like it sometimes but thats it, sometimes.Let the fans show they want players with a passion for the game not just talent. There is no way the fans will stop buying enough tickets or jerseys that they won’t think its the recession so I have a better idea. Leave them some money. Nickels to be exact. Banners wiki page called him nickel bags so they should get the idea. The front office shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds them. I can’t see the fans not going to a game but I could see 20,000 nickles on the seats of every home game. The first reporter to get wind of that story will force them to donate the nickles to charity and maybe get the message to sink in that the fans do matter even the ones that work there.

by bringbackhc17 on Mar 9, 2009 10:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Earth to bringback, the fans are not smart enough for that type of action.

Plus, they have a profit sharing thing going on. So if we all stopped buying stuff the other teams that are doing great will cut the check to Lurie and a that is that.

by topcat6 on Mar 9, 2009 11:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My point exactly

They never will stop buying stuff but leaving a nickel may be something that catches on. That would embarrass the front office if the media picked it up. And that is the only thing that may prove a point.
