Myth: "T.O. got the Eagles to the Super Bowl"
Let's be clear:
Terrell Owens was the best player on the field during Super Bowl XXXIX.
His 9 catches for 122 yards were spectacular, especially the last catch falling out of bounds on a crucial 3rd down.
But to say, as many articles written this past week about Owens, and as many delusional Eagles fans have echoed since 2004, that "T.O. got the Eagles to the Super Bowl," is false.
Let's not forget that Owens did not play in the Divisional Playoff game against the Vikings nor the NFC Championship Game against the Falcons.
Did Owens spark the 13-1 start? Of course. He was a beast on the field with 14 TDs. He gave #5 a luxury he never had. He was, again, spectacular.
But let's not have a revisionist history, as one columnist for Fox Sports suggested the other day. That not only did Owens get the Eagles to the Super Bowl, without him, the Eagles lost their last 2 regular season games.
The Eagle starters played in one series in the first quarter against the Rams. And then sat out the game.
In the season finale, NO starters played and the Eagles lost again.
Don't pin that on Owens 'being hurt.' That's just ridiculous.
So you disagree? You say Owens play fueled them to 13-1 and gave them the 'confidence' to get 'over the hump' in the NFC Championship Game?
I think that's a crock of you know what.
The Eagles won 11 games in 2001, 12 games in 2002 and 12 games in 2003. And they still lost in the NFC Championship Game. So what did the regular season win total mean? Nothing.
Bottom line: Eagles won 2 games in the playoffs without Owens, including the all-crucial NFC Championship Game.
McNabb's INTs, lack of 'D' and Fat Man's Clock Game cost us the Ring. The Patriots were the better team.
But don't say Owens got us to the Super Bowl and think that tells the whole story.

Yeah
Worth remembering. Our defense was great in the playoffs and the NFC was just completely horrible that year, especially the NFC East.
honestly bro, this is a terrible thread. im not understanding your point at all your not making it clear. obviously terrell had something to do with us getting there. or was it just ironic the year he was on the team we went to the big one? you cant even say it wasn’t a lot of him that got us there. even though he wasnt in the game that physically got us there. he was still a very big part. the hole game he was jumping around gettin the crowd fired up keeping them in it the whole time. as a player myself i know those things help.A lot.
His point is proving that all these bums saying "TO is the only reason we got the the SuperBowl"
as some ppl are saying in threads and posts is absolute bull shit
it is a great post and prolly one of the best ones and most factual threads we’ve seen all week
To me the Eagles are like that girlfriend that pisses u off, then u hate her, but the next morning you wake up and remember that thing u love so much about her

i thought the exact same thing
Big D?
God Speed Brian Dawkins. You shall always be love, and sorely missed!
it's pretty simple dude.
in 2003 we went 12-4 and lost in the NFCCG to the Panthers (leading receivers Todd Pinkston and James Thrash) … everyone thought we just needed a big time WR to get over the hump.
We got TO … went 12-4 (weird same record) and lost in the Superbowl. We won our Playoff games without TO so we obviously didn’t need him to get to the Superbowl and while he had a lot of yards he had ZERO TDs and we lost the Superbowl. This if nothing else proves at big time WR is not the definitive answer to our problems.
"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"
fuck balls. 13-3 is right … 13-1 is an okay argument but in 2003 after losing the first 2 games then the bye week the Birds went 12-2 so TO really was the difference in 1 game 13-1/12-2 if you look at a 14 game stretch.
"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"
I agree the margin is slim...
but the 1 game I always remember about that season is the Ravens game…it reminded me of our loss to the Panthers in the NFCCG the year before, and TO made the big play…doesn’t really mean anything just a memory…
I don't think you're using "ironic" properly
"In a couple of weeks or a month, I'll be excited about this team," Dawkins said. "I've got to get used to saying that -- I'm a Bronco." Then he paused. "I'll tell you one thing -- I'll always be an Eagle."
i agree that hes not the only reason. but hes almost making it out as though he had nothing to do with it. the only thing he says is that he sparked us to 13-1 start. and anuj? what are you from india?
who gives a shit where he's from.. is there something wrong with India to you?
where are you from dallas?
if so then GTFO. this is a good post…. not a “terrible thread” at all…
go contemplate the myriad of things you could have done with the $200+ you spent on that authentic terrell owens jersey only to realize it wasnt worth shit
I understand if you’re upset about your beloved TO leaving you.. but nothing some chili, dr. pepper, and a good reading of the republican news section cant fix am i right?
yea the india thing was fucked up
seriously dude i have no problem with the whole Eagle-Cowbitch rivalry trashtalkin but dude come on dont be stupid

well... you can ask anyone around here...
usually, i would cuss the crap out of you, but ill keep my cool. yeah, my parents are from india. Im a georgia boy, raised in philly. ill hope your comment wasn’t ment to be negative, so ill look over it. but if your are a Eagles fan, then why call yourself Big D, a direct reference to the Dallas Cowboys?
God Speed Brian Dawkins. You shall always be love, and sorely missed!
Idea
I suddenly came across this idea. I wonder if two Dallas Cowboys fans with nothing better to do (because they certainly don’t have any playoff highlights to watch) decided to start posting derogatory anti-Eagles things on BGN. Their names?
1. superbowlpukin
2. bigd81
They could’ve at least been a little less transparent with the avatar selection, but hey, people from Dallas aren’t generally considered to be the brightest…
You’re an idiot. I couldnt hate anybody more than the Cowboys. I hate them more than the Mets. Why are you overly sensitive to the criticism of the FO? Nice accusation about me but totally false. I may be new to posting on this particular site but I most certainly bleed green. You should look in the mirror ajay…or is it a-gay?

Hahaha
A-gay…I haven’t heard that since, um, maybe 2nd grade. It’s nice how you have a spirited defense of your position but then devolve to grade-school insults. Good job man. You really proved the entire point I was trying to make.
P.S.
I applaud you on knowing that “you’re” = you are. I really expected “your an idiot”. Maybe you’re smarter than I thought…
All I will say is get your facts straight before making another accusation like that. You call me a Cowgirls fan, I call you a homo. I’m done on this.

hey A-Gay
your from india too right? or your parents at least?
God Speed Brian Dawkins. You shall always be love, and sorely missed!
btw damonmoore I completely agree
that the media continues to overhype the “Donovan + big awesome receiver = superbowl appearance” when TO did not help us get there in the first place. although he did almost bring us the win in the superbowl.
im die hard eagles and ihate all the fuckin cowboys fan around here. i was just stating my opinion lol you guys didnt have to sit here and take jabs at my name and shit i mean i dont really care lol but its what ever man.
Back on topic though ...
… The Eagles have had the talent to get to the Super Bowl several times, and of course have been on the cusp of it four times without T.O. … That they got there the one time they had T.O. is — I believe — a horrible coincidence that needs to be rectified. A good portion of my joy in seeing them win one would be the ability to give a big middle finger to all the people who said McNabb and Reid couldn’t win one.
That said, the 2004 Eagles were potentially the best team in football. Easily could’ve been 15-1 if they wanted to … the Steelers manhandled them midseason, but other than that, they kicked the crap out of everybody but the Patriots. Those three were head and shoulders above the other 29 that year.
Those Eagles pretty much dominated everyone they played. T.O. definitely had a big hand in that. They were easily our best shot at winning a Super Bowl, and in a lot of other years, they would have been the best team in football, easy … which is why all the simpletons equate that with what we “need” to do to get back and win.
(more to come)
(cont'd)
Where I disagree is that a team must be offensively dominant, the ‘04 Eagles were, to win a Super Bowl. Plenty of SBs have been won ugly, or by gritty teams, or teams that just make plays when they’re needed … some of the other NFCCG teams have shown those characteristics and just failed to beat another good team when the time arose.
I don’t think it was that all four of those other teams weren’t good enough to get the job done, especially given who some of them played … they just didn’t. One team has to win and another has to lose.
I think turnovers got them beat in the SB vs. the Pats, and the part that bothers me most about it is knowing we were good enough in ‘04 to beat the dynasty Patriots but we didn’t come through.
It’s water under the bridge though.
Anyway, it’s not like T.O. “won” them a Super Bowl, so I don’t know what all the fuss is about.
As for TV talking heads regurgitating the simple lines of thinking re: the Eagles … we should be used to that by now.
Only way to shut ’em up is to win.
What i dont understand is.
While TO did help us in the regular season, the guy was INJURED in the playoffs! He wasnt on the field. They how did he help us to the Super Bowl. And if he was such a great asset to helpin us get to the Super Bowl, then why didnt he do the same will Dallas
