Eagles sign Sean Jones to 1 year deal

C927e5a9cfb2d2d4157f50ea5dcd7312_medium

The Eagles have announced that they've signed safety Sean Jones to a one year deal.

After having two big seasons in 2006 and 2007, Jones likely thought he'd be fielding big offers this offseason. But after a injury plauged 2008 it doesn't appear that he found the market he expected. It's likely that he signed a one year deal with the Eagles as a chance to prove himself on a high profile team. Of course, I'm just speculating here.

The Eagles obviously get a solid veteran safety to help mitigate the loss of Brian Dawkins.

Quotes from Philly.com

"It feels great," Jones said at the press conference. "Philly has great tradition here. The fans demand the team to win and I’m very excited to be here and be a part of this organization. I want to thank  coach (Andy) Reid for giving me the opportunity to come and showcase my talent.”

" I like to come down in the box and hit you," Jones said.  "At the same time, I’m a ballhawk. I am going to try to implement both of those parts of my game here."

I wanted this signing ... a little surprised it's only 1 year deal

but that makes me believe they like Demps or questions Jones.

Either way I was hoping this happened so I was glued to my computer hitting F5 on Philadelphia Eagles until it came up.

Did you notice

They just bagged the Eagles Live thing? Silly Spadaro not knowing how to do a live feed.

I take it the Spaz finally resolved his technical issues?

On the contrary

They apparently just pretended they were never scheduled to do anything. Interesting strategy…“what technical problems? We don’t have a Eagles Live show! Move along people…”

yeah I noticed I was waiting for it to load hit F5

and it went to the news screen with no link to Eagles live. Pretty funny.

Seriously

You know Spaz went renegade in the studio. I only wish the live feed started working in the middle of it.

rofl. the best part would be when he got totally man-handled by a coat rack or a water cooler. oh god, we could only be so fortunate or such an occurance

thing is

he was still a dick to the fans … he said “stop sending in your comments it hasn’t started yet and we don’t have time to go through and approve all of these.” … sorry Spaz maybe you should learn how to work the computer considering it’s your job.

Spadaro tends to be pretty short with the fans.
I noticed that the days leading up to the Dawkins deal.
He is a little rude and cocky.

He is living my dream job and he needs to appreciate it more and have more patience.

he was a flat out jerk last year when he got fed up with hearing about Larry Fitzgerald he went off on some rant it was really funny but towards the end I felt embarrassed for him.

Like it.....

I like the signing..

Good safety! Add depth and experience.

Curious why only one year?
Because they have faith in Demps or because they have eye on safety in the draft?

Says he only signed 1 year deal so the team and him could get a chance to feel each other out. I’m guessing it’s questions about his knee and faith in Demps.

I like the restraint.
If the Holmes does turn out to be a liability in coverage, it’s only a 1 year deal.
If on the other hand, he picks up the coverage schemes and becomes an asset to the D, we’ll have the ability to franchise and work out a long term deal next year.
Seems kind of like hiring a temp.

Is my first thought. I really believe we are going to go with demps at FS

My guess is they will all play in certain packages ...

… Samuel, Mikell and Brown will never come off the field.

Jones excels against the run, so I see him on run downs, Demps maybe on passing downs or in certain packages (since he was in some this year) and Hanson against three receiver sets and when they want to go press coverage and blitz.

The one-year deal threw me at first, but it actually makes sense for all parties … I think the Birds can lock him up long-term if they like him, or they can draft someone and watch his and Demps’s development and let Jones get his big 2010 payday elsewhere.

Since he’s 27 and coming off a year where he underachieved, I see long-term potential here.

Wow I’m really surprised that its a one year deal. Safeties have gotten good deals this year, so there has to be some real doubts about his health and the impact on his coverage ability.

I'm not ready to move on from #20.

Others have suggested

Jones wants a 1-year deal because he had a couple really good years but was injured this offseason, and could be playing for a huge deal in ’10.

Makes sense.

Good deal for both parties. We’ll see if he fits in well and if we like him, we can either franchise him or work out a long term deal. Jones gets to be in another contract year and will be highly motivated to put up huge numbers to get a good contract.

On another note, I know this is off-topic but is Stacy Andrews going to be playing next year?

by chrisbeomsuh on Mar 6, 2009 7:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I believe so. I haven’t seen it written anywhere recently however I am almost positive Andrews made mention to the fact that he will be ready for the season. I believe it was the interview in front of the beautiful and efficient Philadelphia international airport.

"My worst breakup was with Stacy...It was on a Sunday, we were reading the paper and I said 'I think the Eagles can clinch the NFC East' she looked up and told me it was over." -Kevin from 'The Office"

The Office has several subtle Philly sports references. The former temp/wunderkind is named “Ryan Howard”. Take a look at bobbleheads that sit on some of the desks. I’m not sure if it’s because the show takes place in Scranton, or coincidence, or an inside joke. The Office is the only show (besides the Eagles) that I consider "can’t miss: TV.

Even though im sad to see dawkins go…… I think we might have struck gold here. Hopefully he plays the way he has been playing and has a great year with us and we extend him after the year is up. He has more interceptions that sheldon has his whole career so we will see what happens

Hitters in the secondary

I wanna see receivers be afraid to cross the middle against us….like the House of Pain game….remember the game vs the Cards in the 90s…think it was four tries at the goal line and the “D” stuffed them….Byron Evans was bent over laughin and his mouth piece fell out….

Browns Fan

I’ll give you my thoughts on Sean Jones:

He’s an underrated safety, having played all his career in th same division as Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed. He has the potential to be anything from a very solid player to a borderline Pro Bowler. He’s very strong in run support and is quite a good blitzer for a SS. He’s questionable in pass coverage, namely against TE’s. He is a ball hawk though, both with INT’s and FFum’s.

I really hoped the Browns would have signed him. You getting a pretty good player with him though/
