Sean Jones signed ... 1 year deal

Sean Jones signed

No details yet but its a breaking news banner on there site.  I like this ... it adds depth and for 1 year it's showing we still have faith in Demps.

I'm a little surprised

I didn’t think he’d accept a 1-year deal; all the Cleveland people seemed to think he’d want big money. But it’s a chance to prove himself and maybe get big money (from us or some other team). And it gives Demps another year like you mentioned. Good stuff.

i agree that it’s a good signing… i’m a little up in the air about the length… personally, i think Demps will work out. but say he doesn’t, at least this guy would have been insurance to get us through 2 or 3 years…

"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel

I can see it already

He has a great year, the fans demand we sign him long-term and the front office claims he’s too expensive and lets him go. Here’s hoping that’s not the case (except for the great year part).

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they extend him ...

… midseason, or sometime before he becomes an FA again if it really works out well.

And yes, depending on who they draft and how Demps plays, it could be a Takeo Spikes-ish situation.

Good Signing

Good Signing. Adds depth and experience to the position. He is fairly young at 27 I believe.

I am curious why only one year deal.
Because of Demps?
Because they are eyeing someone in the draft?

I thought I read he was 29.

(bothers to look it up)

Nope. You were right.

The 27-year-old Jones has recorded 286 tackles and three forced fumbles in 60 games, including 44 starts. Jones, listed at 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, had his best season in ’06 when he finished with 107 1/2 tackles and five interceptions.

love this signing!!!!

what does it tell you ....

that he was willing to sign a one-year deal? The market for starting safeties can’t be that bad, can it?

Low risk/medium reward signing

No real negatives here. A solid job by the FO.

haha

I’ll defer to your post for comments.

it's "you're a genius"

love the irony there. heh heh.

good signing for the birds. if he plays really well, maybe we work out an extension for him, if not, it gives demps another year to grow before putting his big-boy shoes on.

Solid signing

All the other Safeties (Leonard, Phillips etc.) were gobbled up. Love the 1 year deal. Make him sing for his supper!

He’ll also replace Considine on special teams. Nice work Birds.

He’ll also replace Considine on special teams.

I don’t know about that … he said on WIP he was promised a starting job.

We'll see.

Our new Special Team Coach, Ted Daisher had him on special teams for the Browns. It would make sense Jones would would help implement ST package. I’m sure he wants to start, but that doesn’t sound like our FO to “guarantee” starting job.

but that doesn’t sound like our FO to "guarantee" starting job

100% agree … in his PC he say he is competing for a safety spot, and wasn’t sure which one. Maybe I heard him wrong on WIP.

No

He didn’t say he was promised a starting job. He said he was there to compete for one.

by ajay on Mar 6, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I was wrong … he said

“I like playing strong, but we have Quintin Mikell already at strong. I don’t know how they’re going to do it. There is a lot of talent in this defensive backfield here in Philly. Hopefully I can come fill in where that void is from missing Dawkins. Hopefully I will become a great player.”

Fine we dont guarantee the starting job fine, a little compation never hurt. It only makes the rest of the the secondary have to work hard and improve.
And this one year deal is a pretty good thing when you think about, if we decicde we want to go the Demps route then we have that option, say we dont want the demps route then we just resign him.
GREAT SIGNING!!!!!!

I like this a lot ...

… Has anyone floated the theory that Jones plays on run downs and Demps plays on passing downs and Mikell plays all the time? I know we were mentioning some of Jones’s strengths and limitations on threads last night.

If Demps got some burn in certain packages this year, he definitely will next year.

Anyway, our top 6 DBs look like a group we can definitely work with. And maybe still address the position in the draft.

by D3Keith on Mar 6, 2009 6:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

With 12 picks

I’m sure Birds will be moving up and down the draft board. Anyone know how many compensatory draft picks will be getting? Dawk, Considine, LJ should fetch us a couple more. This is an embarrassment of riches for a team maybe a “pass interference” call away from Super Bowl.

by weeryide on Mar 6, 2009 6:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure about compensatories

But for the guys you mention we’d get those selections next year. I don’t know if we lost any players last year that would give us compensatories this year?

by ajay on Mar 6, 2009 6:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Plus we got Asante last year

He’d outweigh anything we lost.

by ajay on Mar 6, 2009 6:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow I am really impressed with this deal. Not only did we sure up this position but we aren’t forced to push Demps into a role he might not be ready for yet. A year from now we will be in a much better position to address the FS position for the long term.

Yes.

And long-term could be going with Demps, re-signing Jones to a deal he plays his way into, and have a backup in place from the draft for either.

This helps A LOT.
