Peters, Bills far apart on new contract - Eagles Mentioned

Just read this on buffalonews.com...

http://www.buffalonews.com/452/story/624261.html

The Eagles are the only team they mention that might be interested.  If the Bills don't think they can sign this guy, the Eagles might have enough leverage to get him for something that doesn't include one of their two 1st rounders...

Buffalo Bills Chief Operating Officer Russ Brandon painted a less than optimistic picture regarding the possibility of a new contract agreement with left tackle Jason Peters.

Speaking at the NFL owners meetings in Dana Point, Calif., last week, Brandon said talks with Peters' agent, Eugene Parker, are ongoing, but the two sides remain far apart.

"We've had dialogue with Jason's representatives and we will continue to have dialogue," Brandon said. "Obviously, Jason is a tremendous football player and we would like to have Jason as a cornerstone for many years to come. But it takes two to come together. We spoke to Jason at the conclusion of the season. He knows how much he means to us. Hopefully we can make some headway here in the oncoming weeks."

Peters, who was voted to his second straight Pro Bowl last season, has two years remaining on his five-year contract. But it is believed he wants to be the highest-paid left tackle in the NFL, exceeding the $11• million per-year deal signed by Carolina's Jordan Gross in February.

It is clear there is a sense of desperation on the Bills' part to get something done. They don't want this to drag too far into April.

Brandon declined to say the team would explore trade options if a deal isn't completed before the draft, but it can't be ruled out. League sources said one team that may have interest is the Philadelphia Eagles, who have a need for a left tackle and own two first-round draft picks.

"That's another issue that is too early to discuss," Brandon said. "Our focus is on trying to come together on some kind of arrangement with Jason."

Brandon is not sure if the Bills can bridge the considerable gap between them and Peters.

Brandon also is uncertain if Peters will stage another long holdout.

Peters didn't communicate with the team for months after the end of the 2007 season and was fined more than $600,000 for not reporting until the day before the regular-season opener. He has not attended the Bills' voluntary offseason conditioning program, which began last week.

"We would be hopeful that Jason recognizes that we need everybody to take that next step, and he's a key component to that," Brandon said. "Jason is fully aware that he has two years left on his contract and that should be recognized. Hopefully we'll see Jason sometime in the near future."

BIG PASS!

he had 2 good seasons but has been a headache he is a converted TE because he couldn’t keep his weight down and is causing a stir because he thinks after 2 good seasons he is a stud.

Agreed

The only thing that makes me happy thinking about Jason Peters is that he was an undrafted free agent and turned out to be pretty good LT.

Not undrafted, but King Dunlap anyone?

by ajay on Mar 31, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Im not so sure

about Jason Peters. He made 2 straight probowls but gave up the most sacks(11.5) last year. Is he just a run blocker cuz the Eagles need more of a pass protector. How could you be the highest paid when you gave up the most sacks as a LT. PASS also.

11.5 sacks?

I’m pretty much against giving up quality draft picks and then paying a ton of money to a guy that is bitching about his contract and appears to have given up almost a sack per game.

I don’t know how accurate these numbers are, but I found them on yardbarker. It’s a rundown of the number of sacks given up by left tackles last year. NOTE – Look who’s tied for 3rd least…

1. Ryan Clady, Denver, 0.5 sack
2. Michael Roos, Tennessee, 1 sack PRO BOWLER
3-T. Tony Ugoh, Indianapolis, 2 sacks (Started 11 games)
3-T. Tra Thomas, Philadelphia, 2 sacks
3-T. Jared Gaither, Baltimore, 2 sacks* (Missed first quarter of Philadelphia game)
7. Jake Long, Miami, 2.5 sacks
8-T. Marcus McNeill, San Diego, 3 sacks* (13 games)
8-T. Chris Samuels, Washington, 3 sacks* (12 games)
8-T. Jordan Gross, Carolina, 3 sacks* (15 games) PRO BOWLER
8-T. Jammal Brown, New Orleans, 3 sacks* (Missed 1 game)
8-T. Todd Weiner, Atlanta, 3 sacks* (Started 10 games and appeared in 15)
13-T. Joe Thomas, Cleveland, 3.5 sacks PRO BOWLER
13-T. Walter Jones, Seattle, 3.5 sacks* (12 games) PRO BOWLER
15-T. D’Brickashaw Ferguson, NY Jets, 4 sacks
15-T. Bryant McKinnie, Minnesota, 4 sacks* (11 games)
15-T. Max Starks, Pittsburgh, 4 sacks* (10 starts)
18. Brandon Albert, Kansas City, 4.5 sacks* (Missed 1 game)
19. Levi Jones, Cincinnati, 5.5 sacks* (10 games)
20. Mike Gandy, Arizona, 6.25 sacks
21-T. Chad Clifton, Green Bay, 6.5 sacks* (missed 1 game)
21-T. David Diehl, NY Giants, 6.5 sacks
23. Flozell Adams, Dallas, 7.25 PRO BOWLER
24-T. Khalif Barnes, Jacksonville, 7.5 sacks
24-T. Matt Light, New England, 7.5 sacks
24-T. Kwame Harris, 7.5 sacks* (Started 11, appeared in 13)
27. Donald Penn, Tampa Bay, 8 sacks
28. Joe Staley, San Francisco, 8.5 sacks
29. Jeff Backus, Detroit, 9.25 sacks
30. John St. Clair, Chicago, 9.75 sacks
T-31. Duane Brown, Houston, 11.5 sacks
T-31. Jason Peters, Buffalo, 11.5 sacks (13 games) PRO BOWLER

Yeah, Ryan Clady...

Impressive – Especially for an offense that threw so much.

by JimmyK on Mar 31, 2009 11:24 AM EDT reply actions

He's a good player

Peters is a very good player IF he’s able to participate during the preseason and all the summer workouts. The guy showed up a day before the regular season. That was the biggest reason for his drop off last year. Having this guy on our line (provided the Eagles trade for him before the draft and he comes to preseason) would make our line a lot better. If he comes to the Eagles for a 2nd or 3rd round pick and signs something around 5 years $50 – $55 MM, it makes a lot of sense.

Those stats are OVER RATED!

Tra Thomas was NOT a pro bowler last year and look at his stats. It all depends on if those tackles get help or not and of course, protection schemes. A good brother from the Cle blog showed that Joe Thomas was NOT in fact getting his ass kicked by Trent Cole but our defensive scheme was breaking their protection scheme down…Stats like that ARE VERY misleading ;)

yeah you dont take anything at face value

but 11.5 sacks is a red flag, over rated stat or not

by BadCo'09 on Mar 31, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

BUT, I also think that goes both ways… It’s a red flag, but not a significant one. You can basically tell how good an o-lineman is at a better clip than other positions (or how successful he will be in your scheme, at any rate) and there is nothing preventing Peters from excelling. He had an awful line around him, mediocre QB, and a generally dysfunctional team (that’s overstated, but the Bills aren’t the poster-boy of NFL franchises). I think if we DO trade for him, then it’s a win-win situation. We give him money, sure, but we have that to spare. I doubt the Bills have the leverage anymore to get a 1st round draft pick, and while they could keep him, my guess is they prefer getting 5 years of value out of a 2nd round type player rather than 1 year of value out of a guy who is a surplus anyway.

Agree with Joe here
It all depends on if those tackles get help or not and of course, protection schemes.

That’s definitely a nice stat to have, but you can’t always attribute the sack to the OL that lined up in front of the guy, same way you can’t always attribute a TD pass to the DB closest to him when he caught it. Sometimes you can …

This is going to sound dumb, but if the Eagles put forth what it’s going to take to grab this guy, that means they really want him, which means I want him. If their interest is lukewarm, mine too. I’m just gonna trust Andy a little more than me when it comes to O-Line.

LT is the most important position on the offensive line, arguably the second most important position on the offense. teams dont give up good LT’s, they get rid of problematic ones. the fact that the Bills are even offering to trade him and not fighting tooth and nail to get him signed is evidence enough that he isnt a very good player

pass.

by njh3293 on Mar 31, 2009 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

inaccurate stats

as much as those sacks allowed stats are cool to look at, Trent Edwards and JP Losman are the Bills Quarterbacks… there’s the first problem, they’re young and still learning. They hold onto the ball longer then they should. I personally think that edwards will be a good qb eventually. Also take into account that the sacks could have come on a miscommunication error between him and the gaurd, maybe the gaurd missed his assignment and Peters got screwed. So many variables go into a sack that it’s almost impossible to tell how good a left tackle is based on that stat

Representing CANADA eh?

They are fighting pretty damn hard, the issue is he wants about $3 MM more per year than they want to give him. He’s an $8 MM player to them per year, no $11 MM. I think giving him something in the middle over a couple years would be a great addition.

Sounds like they are fighting to keep him though

and the trade speculation is coming from non-team sources.

Doesn't really work that way in this situation...

If he’s planning on holding out the entire preseason if the Bills won’t pay him, then the team that trades for him simply acquires that same problem if they don’t want to pay him longterm either.
