As usual, Sheldon Brown tells it like it is
In case you missed it, ESPN.com's Jeff Chadiha has an excellent column today on a new league rule that prevents defensive players from lunging to tackle quarterbacks. Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown said he didn't think the rule would change how players approach the game.
"You're just going to see a lot more fines because of this [rule]," said Brown. "Nobody is going to take the time to get up off the ground to hit a quarterback. So you'll have guys make the play, pay the fines, write it off on their taxes and move on. Whoever made that rule is crazy."
Something tells me Commissioner Goodell won't be pleased with Brown's comments on ESPN.com. In fact, he may give the cornerback a head start on one of those fines. Also stick around and watch the Michael Strahan video.

I think he's right
As a pro football player, you’re going to have that killer instinct to get the QB when you see him and it happens so often that a qb gets tripped up or snagged by a defender who’s fallen. Also, how much yardage is it gonna be for each penalty? is it going to be considered a personal foul for 15?

i think its a 15 yd personal foul penalty, and after training your guys to play to the whistle and all that, this is going to be a hard rule to follow

yeah, that's the question.
I think that these guys are bred to attack from the moment they put on pads, good luck being a defender and not getting a fine this year.

Gotta love Sheldon
Last year, when Drew Rosenhaus said Lito Sheppard should be the starter, I loved when Sheldon said that Rosenhaus has never watched game tape and probably couldn’t even identify who he was.
And he’s dead on with these comments.
Seriously though, if Bernard Pollard lunges at a QB like Jason Campbell instead of Tom Brady and puts him out for the year, do they make this rule?

god no
Mike Golic made the same argument that if this happened to Tyler Thigpen nothing would have come from it

It doesn't
but it’s funny
"In a couple of weeks or a month, I'll be excited about this team," Dawkins said. "I've got to get used to saying that -- I'm a Bronco." Then he paused. "I'll tell you one thing -- I'll always be an Eagle."

The thing about ACL injuries
is that they are absolute flukes. McNabb tore his running out of bounds and tripping. If Tom Brady’s ACL was gonna tear, it was just gonna tear. Period. Because it happened on that play at that time does not justify making a rule to prevent it. Mark my words, this rule will not affect the amount of ACL tears that occur on quarterbacks next season. Not even a little bit.
The main reason why this rule change is BS is because, while an ACL tear is season ending, it is NOT life threatening. At least not in the same way that a helmet-to-helmet collision is life threatening or a Roy Williams Horse Collar is life threatening (neck injury).
All this rule does is penalize aggressive, persistent play by motivated defensive player. As far as I can tell, that is typically something that is lauded in the NFL… right?
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

I think some NFL fines are donated to charity … not sure but I think I read that (confirmation please!) … if that’s the case then they can write it off.

the fine is a donation by the player to a charitable organization. The doubt the IRS would crack down because of the money the Charities would lose if they did. It’s better then the players reinvesting there money in the NFL IMO.

NEW RULE.
No more running the bases bases.
Someone might get hurt and ruin our investment.
F that BS.
