Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

With the 18th pick in the BGN Community Mock Draft the Chicago Bears select...

Representing the Chicago Bears in the BGN community mock draft Two Tons of Irony selects...

Michael Oher, OT Mississippi

The easy pick that I was waiting for here was Jeremy Maclin, but him being taken may have been a blessing in disguise since the Bears really need to take care of quite a few different areas.

They could target a shutdown CB here which would make Vontae Davis the pick at this spot.  They could still look receiver on this one with the likes of Derius Heyward-Bey or Percy Harvin.  I am of the opinion that you can always pick up good value at WR in the late 2nd and into the 3rd.  The bears do not run many 3 receiver sets opting for 2 TE sets with the talented duo of Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark.  They also have a very good receiver out of the backfield in Matt Forte.  On top of that, the Bears, much like the Eagles and Andy Reid, have a penchant for keeping rookie WR on the bench.  Needless to say the Bears would be well served to use this pick for someone they would get more from than a rookie WR.

That then brings us to their OL.  They lost their starting RT, Tait, to retirement and it is never a bad idea to give your somewhat fresh QB a little more protection.  They are also a team that is built on running the football first, and power running at that, so an OL is incredibly important.  There are a couple of OL picks that could be on a couple boards at this point.  Obviously there were some hopefuls may have thought that the wild card of the first round, Andre Smith, may fall this far, but not here at least.  Eben Britton out of Arizona is a LT played RT his first two years there, but is a guy who came out early and may not be completely ready for another year.  Duke Robinson is the best OG on the board but the general consensus is that he could be had in the 2nd round.  That brings us to Michael Oher.  Oher is a mauler on the line that fits the longtime power running game of the Bears.  He moves extremely well for a T and is great in the running game.  From time to time his concentration lapses in pass coverage.  He is a great pick for a run first team that needs some OL depth.

Commish take after the jump. Afk_football and the Tampa Bay Bucs are on the clock.

Star-divide

Commish take - There's a lot the Bears could do with this pick and offensive line is certainly one of them. John Tait could be close to retirement and Oher coupled with last year's top pick Chris Williams would give the Bears two solid bookends for their offense for the next 6 or 7 years. That's a solid way to build your team. Oher is also pretty solid value down here at 18.

Another strong possibility here is WR, so as TTOI said... a guy like Heyward-Bey or Percy Harvin is a possibility as well.

Da Bears!

I want to thank the Da Bears for losing week 17 & being one of the many teams that allowed the Eagles to slip into the last playoff spot… damn refs in Arizona are apparently blind to pass interference.

O'Hair, Oar, O-er, Owe-her?

There really was no other choice. Tait retired, St. Clair signed with the Browns. Chris Williams, last year’s 1st round pick, should start at one of the bookend spots. If they bring in Orlando Pace, Oher is still a good pick b/c Pace is really only a short-term option. If they don’t bring in a FA then Oher is good enough to start right away. This is a BPA and a pick of need at the same time.

Great work

nice pick

if there is speculation that the Eagles are interested in him then he must have some talent … you have to be able to protect your QB no matter who it is. They have options at RB and WR and even TE and Smith knows defense so this makes perfect sense.

Should clarify Smith knows defense and they are set there so going OL makes perfect sense to build the team.
