Ryan Moats police saga
Sorry if this has been posted before- I heard about it on WHJY this morning up in RI.
Even though Moats isn't with the Eagles anymore, this is still a pretty crazy story. When I heard he was involved in a police incident I expected something along the lines of him getting arrested- and it wasn' t the case.
And BTW I may as well introduce myself- I moved to RI about six years ago after growing up in Philly, and I look forward to ragging on Pats fans as they learn that yes, it generally does take a little bit longer than a year to come back 100% after a serious knee injury. They shoulda kept Cassel...
[Note by JasonB, 03/26/09 9:19 AM EDT ] added link/story. This is worth reading, what a horrible thing for Moats to have to go through
NFL player's police saga at Plano hospital captured on dash cam.
As he rushed his family to the hospital, 26-year-old NFL running back Ryan Moats rolled through a red light. A Dallas police officer pulled their SUV over outside the emergency room.
Moats and his wife explained that her mother was dying inside the hospital.
"You really want to go through this right now?" Moats pleaded. "My mother-in-law is dying. Right now!"
Officer Robert Powell, 25, was unmoved. He spent long minutes writing Moats a ticket and threatened him with arrest.
"I can screw you over," the officer said. "I'd rather not do that."
The scene last week, captured by a dashboard video camera, prompted apologies and the promise of an investigation from Dallas police officials Wednesday.
"There were some things that were said that were disturbing, to say the least," said Lt. Andy Harvey, a police spokesman.

I just read this.
“I can screw you over,” the officer said. “I’d rather not do that.”
That quote sums it all up. Some cops just get off on power trip. Officers like that have no business being on the force. This could have been a lot worse, I am not sure I would have handled myself like Moats did. I wonder if this cop has a wife and kids and how they feel about his actions?

wow...
that’s rough. you would think that the guy would offer a little sympathy over an issue of a dying mother, but i guess not.

This ticks me off, I know many cops and have family in the military. I might have 3
brothers on the police force soon. And I have to tell you, some cops definately get off on power trips. I see cops pull people over by my way for fun. There is this one skinny 19 yearold cop that thinks he is the man. You just want to slap the smerk of his face. This story is disgracefull. That cop should lose his job just for being a robotic moron.

Thanks Jason for adding the quote in- I wasn’t quite sure how to put that and the hyperlink in the post.
I was just surprised to hear Moat’s name on the radio. Unfortunately, I doubt that the cop will suffer any serious repercussions… I have a few friends in the force, and this doo$$h definitely gives them a bad rap. At least it was caught on camera.

that cop is a punk. he didn’t know his mother in law was dying when his wife and aunt kept walking away from him and towards the hospital.

what a loser
I just want to punch him in the gut, and give him a nice rib shot. I can’t get over what a loser he is. Ryan was being respectful to that punk 25 year old.

This explains it all. What an a..wipe
Hospital security guards arrived and told Powell that the Moatses’ relative really was upstairs dying.
Powell spent several minutes inside his squad car, in part to check Moats for outstanding warrants. He found none.
Another hospital staffer came out and spoke with a Plano police officer who had arrived.
“Hey, that’s the nurse,” the Plano officer told Powell. “She said that the mom’s dying right now, and she’s wanting to know if they can get him up there before she dies.”
“All right,” Powell replied. “I’m almost done.”

Just a few added details I found
Lost in the brouhaha that has erupted regarding the shameful (in our opinion) incident that unfolded between Dallas police officer Robert Powell and Texans running back Ryan Moats is a report that Powell drew his gun on Moats’ wife.
Apparently, the weapon was pulled at the outset of the confrontation, when Moats’ wife tried to rush inside the nearby hospital.
"Get in there," Powell said. "Let me see your hands. Get in there. Put your hands on the car."
It should have been obvious to anyone with an ounce of common sense that a car with its hazard lights flashing that ran a red light and stopped in the parking lot of a hospital contains people who for whatever reason need to get inside said hospital.
This isn’t about Powell’s subsequent perception, right or wrong, that Moats had a bad attitude. From the moment Powell got out of the car, he was wired for a confrontation. Otherwise, he would have let Moats’ wife head to the hospital without incident.
The fact that Powell opted not to shoot her when she decided to ignore him proves that Powell knew what was happening. And yet he still opted to act like a royal ass.
We realize some are concerned that criticism of police officers might undermine their ability to perform their jobs effectively. We prefer to believe that criticism of those in authority is appropriate, when deserved. Otherwise, Powell and people like him will continue to make the darkest moments of people’s lives unnecessarily darker.

It really bothers me that such rampant abuse of power is out there, and very rarely does it get exposed like this.

It just bewilders me how Cops like Powell pass the psych evaluation portion of their test. Because nobody in their right mind would hold a person in their car after hearing the circumstances of a dying relative, and give them a ticket. It sickens my stomach to know that this kind of person is responsible for protecting and serving his community. He should not be able to wear a badge unless its a badge for a security job at Wal Mart, and that is still giving him too much credit. Instead of paid leave how about un paid leave so he can sit back with no paycheck, and realize how stupid his decision was and how stupid he made his department look. this kind of cop gives all the good and hardworking cops a bad name. He should be fired, and I think the Moats and the community should put pressure on the Chief of Police to fire him.
