With the 12th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft the Denver Broncos select...
Representing the Denver Broncos in the 2009 BGN community mock draft AndyB selects...
Rey Maualuga, LB Southern Cal
The Broncos had one of the worst defenses in the league last year and need a major upgrade in the front 7. With a new coach bringing in the 3-4 defense this year, they will need another linebacker. There were a few other players I wanted a little more but none of them fell to this spot. The Broncos could really use a nose tackle but BJ Raji was already off the board. Brian Orakpo and Everette Brown would have fit in great with the 3-4 defense as a DE/OLB. And of coarse Aaron Curry was my first choice at linebacker.Ray stands at 6-2 260lbs. He was a 2- Time All-Pac 10 first teamer in college. He started MLB and led the team in tackles. He is known for his downhill play, hard hits, and leadership. The Broncos had many offseason signings. A bunch on offense and defense. They signed 2 decent running back and another QB. They are pretty stacked at WR with Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley, and Brandon Marshall. The signing of Dawkins as well as another FS will help the secondary. The only other pick I think the broncos could make at this spot is for a cornerback. The secondary is pretty old in denver.Unless the Broncos decide to trade this pick, this seems like the smartest and most logical pick. With a new defensive scheme in tact, they will want a young inside linebacker to lead for years to come.
Commish take plus more analysis after the jump. Clyde Simmons and the Washington Redskins are on the clock.
Commish take - It looks like the smart pick for the Broncos here is to take the best defensive player available and there's a pretty good argument to be made that Maualua is that guy. He should fit nicely as an the inside LB in their 3-4 scheme. Solid pick. Aaron Maybin could also be a possibilitiy.

Given what’s currently available in our mock draft, I don’t see why not. As long as Denver holds onto everyone on the offensive side of the ball, they’re actually fairly well set there… but their defense is a friggin mess. Most of, if not all of, the defensive players they brought in via free agency are only stop gaps or two year solutions at the most… They need to build their defense from the ground up.

This is a little early to me for him
but it is a need and McNaniels is the coach there and Ray is a patriout kind of guy

I don’t think its too early, he was the leader of arguably the best defense in college football.

It’s always tough to tell on those stacked teams, how good one individual player actually is.

I like this pick
It’s always good to have a LB core, players that can be your leader on the field and Rey Maualuga can do that. They do have Boss Bailey though, but getting younger is a smart decision.
I agree with Jason that Aaron Maybin could be a good pick here, in a 3-4 I think Maybin would thrive as an OLB.
I also like Tyson Jackson he has the size and speed to be a DE in a 3-4, and wouldn’t be anymore of a reach here then Rey Maualuga is.

coming from a bronco fan, i love the pick andyB
as us fans at mile high report have discussed, the broncos need a player that can change the attitiude and the culture of the defense. we brought dawkins in here to do that, but as we all know, dawkins bleeds green. he is going to be remembered as an eagle. the broncos need a “denver bronco” to help change the old habits on this defense. we havent had a player like that since Al Wilson. thats why i love the pick! he would bring a whole new passion to our god awful defense.
24-24 doesn't win championships
