Eagles sign Leonard Weaver to one year deal
I've been waiting all offseason to hear this... John Clayton is reporting that the Eagles have agree to a one year deal with free FB Leonard Weaver
Former Seattle Seahawks fullback Leonard Weaver weaved his way through a handful of contract offers and accepted a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles Friday.
The contract, according to a source, is a one-year deal that will pay him $1.75 million but also has incentives that could take the deal to $2.5 million. Although there was more money on the table from a couple of other teams, Weaver felt more comfortable with the offensive opportunities in Philadelphia.
[Note by JasonB, 03/20/09 2:57 PM EDT ] It is confirmed now on the Eagles site.
The Eagles took care of two off-season needs with one move on Friday.
Unrestricted free agent fullback Leonard Weaver has agreed to terms with the Eagles on a one-year deal. The 6-foot, 242-pound Weaver spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks. Originally signed as a rookie free agent out of Carson-Newman in 2005, the 26-year-old is well-versed in the West Coast Offense. Weaver is more than just a lead blocker; he's also an effective weapon out of the backfield.

Hey Olsquick and bleedgreen20
I saw your posts before they were deleted. Great job in posting this info fast. I mean 3 guys had this up like in 2 minutes.
This sites runs laps around gcobb. He will report this by Monday or Tuesday.
City of Champions!
Wow
I just realized we have THREE fullbacks on the roster. Who says Andy doesn’t care about the position? ;-)
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he totally copied me!
weaver! Weaver! WEAVER!!!
knowshon! Knowshon! KNOWSHON!!!
knowshon... Knowshon... KNOWSHON!!!!
Jesus… That was odd. First we hear lots about him, then nothing… then talks are back… then it disappears for a week and then all of the sudden he signs… wow… Great move though. Kind of upset it’s only one year. Obviously he plans to test the market again next year to see if he can get the money he wants.
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
he said he was looking forward to the offensive opportunity?
Where? Here?
Uh! The must have tricked him to thinking the fullback gets the rock.
Maybe he is the exception though.
City of Champions!
i’m going to translate that line as, “I can’t get the tons of cash and a long term deal I want. Every other team wants to pay me $6M over 4 years. The Eagles are willing to do one year and let me hit the market again. So I’ll say I like their offense more.” Either way, I don’t care. He’s here.
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
same with Sean Jones.
Question, why are talking like Sean Jones aint starting? I don’t think Demps starts over Jones. That puzzles me.
City of Champions!
I think part of it is that alot of guys aren’t getting the cash and years they expected so they’re happy to try again next year. As far as Jones, it’s fine for us to. If Demps can’t start, Jones will and it gives Demps another year to get ready to start next year. However, the one year deal to Weaver sucks. If he does well, someone will offer him more money next year, and I don’t know if we’ll match. But let’s worry about this stuff next year!
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
or the Birds will lock him up mid season. Remember they like to save some cap room so that they can use it to sign players to long term deals mid season.
"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"
I think so,
there wasn’t a big market for safety this year, and obviously fullback. I think we got these guys for a year. Like Shawn Barber in the past.
You play well, either we resign you to a big contract, or you try again next year as FA.
I personally like Jones to stay, at least I hope.
City of Champions!
yeah that’s a possibility too… it’s just rare to find this kind of quality at this position, at 26! i just would have been happier to see them get him for 3 or 4 years now. but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
my thought is … 1 year deal if he picks up the system (which he should coming from Seattle) and makes some plays lock him up … if he struggles no harm done. He was asking for a lot of money, I would want to be sure.
"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"
yeah, i get the prudency of it and i’ve got no problem with it… i just hope that when it comes down to it, we actively try to lock him up before he hits the market again.
given that our system is basically an off-shot of Holmgren’s system, i’m with you on the notion that he should pick it right up
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
yeah you don't know
I would’ve liked to see a 3-4 year deal too.
"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"
+1
or the Birds will lock him up mid season. Remember they like to save some cap room so that they can use it to sign players to long term deals mid season.
exactly.
The birds are covering themselves, but they will probably make offers to both those guys if they don’t draft someone similar (at FB anyway) and fall in love …
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Wait 'til post draft
They had a private workout with Patrick Chong out of Oregon.
You can’t rule out the possibility of them taking another 2nd round saftey to challenge for a starting role.

He’s talking about the fact that the Eagles throw the ball their backs a lot. Recieving is a big part of his game.
Passing game out of the backfield, fool
This is a brilliant pickup, and the keynote move of the offseason. If we just get ourselves one more playmaker (TE is the position of need), we’re lookin’ mighty fine.
I don't post a lot....
But I had to come in and say thank god for some actual Eagles news. Thanks for the great site and great posts.
PS – I cant stand the GCobb site, its the exact opposite of Spadaro’s stuff.
He got some article about Buck that I don't understand.
It kind of alludes to a wire tap and Bucks voice on tape.
I don’t understand it. I hate anything Micah Warren and Lloyd Vance write. I prefer to read Whodie126 and Foos5 and JasonB.
City of Champions!
wow man… you’ve been here awhile… you should interact a bit more. we’re always glad to hear stuff like this though

Yeah I have been lurking here for a while. I am from New Yorker but I have always hated the Giants. I ended up getting my first job after college at Peco Energy. It just happened to be McNabb’s first year as well. I have been a die hard iggles fan ever since.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY XXBLEEDGREEN5XX
lol this is awesome really its my bday and im pumped dude i can see this guy bustin through that overrated Giants line on a goalline and being like, “Where was this last year”???
To me the Eagles are like that girlfriend that pisses u off, then u hate her, but the next morning you wake up and remember that thing u love so much about her

"Where was this last year"???
The past two years, it’s been an issue.
The red zone stuff, if not the FB stuff.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
How many other team boards
Can get this pumped up like this over a fullback? Good stuff.
I dig the move – one less hole we need to worry about filling with one of our 12 pegs (picks)

how many other teams have fanbases that actually know a fullback is important and that they don’t have one that does the job? no offense to klecko… the guy did everything that was asked of him and more, with a smile on his face. and by all accounts he’s a real stand up guy and team player.

Eckel vs Booker becomes a training camp battle now?
Eckel being a short yardage RB#3 versus Booker being a ‘whatever you call that stuff’ RB#3
by andyreidswaistline on Mar 20, 2009 3:25 PM EDT reply actions
Eckel vs Weaver … I think we take RB in the draft … no need for two ~6 foot ~240lb FBs, then it’s Rookie, Buckly, and Booker plus another back for competition in camp.
"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"
with Knowshon getting the nod of course and probably Booker… i just don’t think they give him the boot just yet
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
I'm agreed
Disappointed as I am in the lack of production from Booker, I don’t want to jettison him yet. Not convinced we ever used him properly either.
I’m a Booker fan … I would love a backfield of Knowshon/Booker/Westy and Weaver leading the way …
"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"
although this post obviously never came to fruition, i think i may be the original Booker fan lol
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
oh in that case ...
I hope Booker gets cut … :) just playing yeah I think he gets a legit shot especially if we … (forgive me anuj) … don’t get Knowshon.
"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"
He runs to high for me. He just looked small. Maybe he could play a wing type posion
and catch the ball from the backfield more.

That's what she said
My theory on why Andy Reid doesn't like running the football.
When Andy Reid was 6, his parents wanted him to lose some weight and always asked him to go to the park and run, Annoyed, Andy said "No I'll pass".
i love this pic

Meanwhile, I think I hate my GM.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP
dancing around my chair in the office
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Weaver may not even stay one year
The conversation will be between Andy and Leonard in week 1….
Leonard: So it’s 3rd and 1 and I haven’t even touched the ball, I can convert in short yardage situations……when are we going to run?
Andy: Run what?
Leonard: Run the ball?
Andy: Run the ball?
Leonard: Yeah.
Andy: ……..

God I hope not
Hopefully they plan to use him, although considering what went down with Buckhalter this year God knows. Andy probably signed Weaver so he could sing gospel music during team meetings.
Haha

it’s a cost cutting strategy… with one signing, they got a fullback, added depth on the D-line, and no longer need a game day priest…

Hey SS
I went to the Hawks-Iggles game this year in Seattle, just a few notes
1) Awesome stadium
2) Maybe I was just fortunate, but the Hawks fans around us were class acts, even with our Philly jerseys on
3) One guy who was in our section was this dude who apparently shows up to every home game….in the other teams apparel. You ever heard of this guy? He got chipped the whole game.
Hey NFC Beast
1.) I know, great place.
2.) Most ’Hawks fans are good, never heard of any problems other than the snow incident against the Jets.
3.) Never heard of him.
The “no tailgating” rule is so retarded though.
Seattle doesn’t face Philly this year so I’m spared embarrassment.
At least the ’Hawks have runaway beer truck (Owen Schmitt), but this is awful to lose Weaver.
SSR's NFL Fun Fact: Andy Reid is the only coach in the league who uses the pass to set up the pass.
At least the area surrounding the stadium had a ton of bars though, but you’re right, no tailgating was a bit of a downer
Best of luck to your team, I myself would be thrilled to have a TE like Carlson, what a find eh
ps I saw the Hawks draft day hats….thats just bad luck that is lol jk jk
link to this hats please

NFL.com couldnt make the address any longer I suppose...
Nothing outrageous, but you’d have to REALLY love the Hawks/ that green to wear it haha I’ll stick to midnight green thanks :D
It's so...GREEN!!!
SSR's NFL Fun Fact: Andy Reid is the only coach in the league who uses the pass to set up the pass.
Best of luck to yours too....love Eagles fans a lot
Carlson is great, he can become a legend.
Well yeah there are a ton of bars and places to eat and the stadium is right across from Chinatown so there will be food.
But it’s stupid city laws that says we can’t tailgate.
And they wonder why no one wants to put an NBA team here…..some lousy rules by the city.
SSR's NFL Fun Fact: Andy Reid is the only coach in the league who uses the pass to set up the pass.
he could be part of a plan to run more
Maybe Andy realized putting it all on DMac isn’t the best option?
hahah
I was there this year too and I have to say it was the best visiting stadium I have ever been to for any sport. My god the Sea fans are loud and supportive.

Is this what McNabb was thinking?
he’s also an effective weapon out of the backfield
Sweet – the Birds’ll rework DMac’s deal tomorrow.
Glad it got done tho’
TRUE FULLBACK
Weaver = More protection for #5 and more holes for #36
and more first downs on 4th and 1……………
Move over Brandon Jacobs…..the NFC East has a new FB in town.
i feel like weaver’s presence last year would have won us at the very least the bear’s game. having weaver in and andrews (the original eagle) back from injury should vastly improve our running game, and at the very least short yardage. maybe it could also help in red zone?
Average Blocker
Although I’m happy we picked him up I’m not sure he’s going to pay big dividends in the running game as a lead blocker. Apparently he was a converted TE and most people rate him as an average blocker.
He can definitely make plays catching the ball. Solid weapon for McNabb.
Now, hopefully we put this guy to use running and catching the ball.
The road to victory!
He’s an excellent blocker on passing downs. Lead blocker for Westbrook is going to be another story, though he vastly improved last year at that. Of course being a diversion might be an interesting tactic, since any defense has to account for him. With the right scheme he might not have to be a great lead blocker.
very nice
with a power back now, we dont need beanie. hand off to Weaver in short down situations.
knowshon... Knowshon... KNOWSHON!!!!
