Eagles sign Leonard Weaver to one year deal

I've been waiting all offseason to hear this... John Clayton is reporting that the Eagles have agree to a one year deal with free FB Leonard Weaver

Former Seattle Seahawks fullback Leonard Weaver weaved his way through a handful of contract offers and accepted a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles Friday.

The contract, according to a source, is a one-year deal that will pay him $1.75 million but also has incentives that could take the deal to $2.5 million. Although there was more money on the table from a couple of other teams, Weaver felt more comfortable with the offensive opportunities in Philadelphia.

[Note by JasonB, 03/20/09 2:57 PM EDT ] It is confirmed now on the Eagles site.

The Eagles took care of two off-season needs with one move on Friday.

Unrestricted free agent fullback Leonard Weaver has agreed to terms with the Eagles on a one-year deal. The 6-foot, 242-pound Weaver spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks. Originally signed as a rookie free agent out of Carson-Newman in 2005, the 26-year-old is well-versed in the West Coast Offense. Weaver is more than just a lead blocker; he's also an effective weapon out of the backfield.

Jesus… That was odd. First we hear lots about him, then nothing… then talks are back… then it disappears for a week and then all of the sudden he signs… wow… Great move though. Kind of upset it’s only one year. Obviously he plans to test the market again next year to see if he can get the money he wants.

Where? Here?

Uh! The must have tricked him to thinking the fullback gets the rock.

Maybe he is the exception though.

i’m going to translate that line as, “I can’t get the tons of cash and a long term deal I want. Every other team wants to pay me $6M over 4 years. The Eagles are willing to do one year and let me hit the market again. So I’ll say I like their offense more.” Either way, I don’t care. He’s here.

same with Sean Jones.

Question, why are talking like Sean Jones aint starting? I don’t think Demps starts over Jones. That puzzles me.

City of Champions!

by yophillybro on Mar 20, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I think part of it is that alot of guys aren’t getting the cash and years they expected so they’re happy to try again next year. As far as Jones, it’s fine for us to. If Demps can’t start, Jones will and it gives Demps another year to get ready to start next year. However, the one year deal to Weaver sucks. If he does well, someone will offer him more money next year, and I don’t know if we’ll match. But let’s worry about this stuff next year!

or the Birds will lock him up mid season. Remember they like to save some cap room so that they can use it to sign players to long term deals mid season.

I think so,

there wasn’t a big market for safety this year, and obviously fullback. I think we got these guys for a year. Like Shawn Barber in the past.

You play well, either we resign you to a big contract, or you try again next year as FA.

I personally like Jones to stay, at least I hope.

yeah that’s a possibility too… it’s just rare to find this kind of quality at this position, at 26! i just would have been happier to see them get him for 3 or 4 years now. but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there

my thought is … 1 year deal if he picks up the system (which he should coming from Seattle) and makes some plays lock him up … if he struggles no harm done. He was asking for a lot of money, I would want to be sure.

yeah, i get the prudency of it and i’ve got no problem with it… i just hope that when it comes down to it, we actively try to lock him up before he hits the market again.

given that our system is basically an off-shot of Holmgren’s system, i’m with you on the notion that he should pick it right up

With an uncapped year looming, I would not be surprised if several players don’t want more than a one year deal.

The chance to head into a year with no cap as a UFA is an attractive idea.

Eckel vs Booker becomes a training camp battle now?

Eckel being a short yardage RB#3 versus Booker being a ‘whatever you call that stuff’ RB#3

by andyreidswaistline on Mar 20, 2009 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

Eckel vs Weaver … I think we take RB in the draft … no need for two ~6 foot ~240lb FBs, then it’s Rookie, Buckly, and Booker plus another back for competition in camp.

Hey SS

I went to the Hawks-Iggles game this year in Seattle, just a few notes

1) Awesome stadium
2) Maybe I was just fortunate, but the Hawks fans around us were class acts, even with our Philly jerseys on
3) One guy who was in our section was this dude who apparently shows up to every home game….in the other teams apparel. You ever heard of this guy? He got chipped the whole game.

Hey NFC Beast

1.) I know, great place.

2.) Most ’Hawks fans are good, never heard of any problems other than the snow incident against the Jets.

3.) Never heard of him.

The “no tailgating” rule is so retarded though.

Seattle doesn’t face Philly this year so I’m spared embarrassment.

At least the ’Hawks have runaway beer truck (Owen Schmitt), but this is awful to lose Weaver.

i feel like weaver’s presence last year would have won us at the very least the bear’s game. having weaver in and andrews (the original eagle) back from injury should vastly improve our running game, and at the very least short yardage. maybe it could also help in red zone?

Average Blocker

Although I’m happy we picked him up I’m not sure he’s going to pay big dividends in the running game as a lead blocker. Apparently he was a converted TE and most people rate him as an average blocker.

He can definitely make plays catching the ball. Solid weapon for McNabb.
Now, hopefully we put this guy to use running and catching the ball.

The road to victory!

He’s an excellent blocker on passing downs. Lead blocker for Westbrook is going to be another story, though he vastly improved last year at that. Of course being a diversion might be an interesting tactic, since any defense has to account for him. With the right scheme he might not have to be a great lead blocker.

with a power back now, we dont need beanie. hand off to Weaver in short down situations.
