Reid happy with receivers.
During a wide-ranging interview with the Eagles' Web site, Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid didn't sound like a man desperate to add another weapon at wide receiver. Here's what he said about the team's starters:
"I like our wide receivers. It was great to get DesSean [Jackson] in the action there. I think this is a big year for him because teams are going to do just like we're doing. They're studying our offense and they're going to study DeSean Jackson. They're going to slow it down, watch it, look at his tendencies, his physical abilities, what type of routes we're running him on, so we've got to take it to another level with DeSean. DeSean has to continue to work hard in this off-season, get stronger and more precise in his route running, all of those things. And then we have a big challenge as coaches of coming up with new things to make sure that he has an opportunity to catch the football.
"Kevin Curtis, I think the exciting thing about Kevin Curtis, is, even though he's a little bit older, in NFL years, fairly young. He had gone on a church mission when he was in college, so there is a two-year differential there in his NFL years compared to his age. Kevin is coming off sports hernia surgery that, as we know here, slow you down a little bit. I don't think Kevin was feeling what he normally feels as a football player until probably the last three games of the season and you were able to see that as we went into the playoffs.
"We've got young guys around them -- Hank Baskett and Reggie Brown, who is a starting-caliber player and who has started a lot of games for us. We consider him a starter in this mix. Jason Avant, you saw him bloom into this third receiver who was virtually unstoppable as an inside receiver. He just had a phenomenal year, and he was coming off a sports hernia surgery from the year before and was also banged up just a little bit as we went down the stretch. We expect good things from him and for him to take another step up."
Of course, Reid could be hedging his bets while the team prepares to go after Anquan Boldin. But if you look around the NFC East, it's not like the Eagles are at a disadvantage at the receiver position. At this point, they're certainly in better shape than the Redskins and Cowboys at receiver. And depending on what happens with Plaxico Burress in court, the Eagles might have the division's top unit.
Matt Mosley review of Reid interview
So this could be posturing in preparation for going after a WR by trade or in the draft or he could be completely honest like a lot of people insist here and that's that we don't really need a "#1" wr. So does this throw off people's opinion about Andy taking a WR in the first 2 rounds of the draft?

He always says that.
That said, I don’t want to trade for Boldin. I would rather have my first round pick. We have to many need to fill right now, rather than sweating the receivers again.

A couple weeks ago, I'd have agreed with you
But we signed a starting-caliber S, T and FB.
So our last real need is a TE, which can be had in the first, but perhaps can be had later.
Then after that, I think we’re in best player available territory. An RB or another T would be nice, but like TE, they don’t necessarily have to be the 21 or 28.
I’m not one of the people whose hopes are up for Boldin, but you gotta admit, our list of “needs” is getting shorter. Which is good news either way.

Draft Picks
The more I think about it, the less I want Boldin. I do expect some big draft day moves. I trust the front office. If they get Boldin or not, I’m sure the move they make is probably the right move. People really underestimate Desean Jackson. His rookie year was pretty amazing. If you look at people like Owens or Steve Smith or a lot of the most talented WR’s, most of them took a few years to hit their prime. He’s already a step ahead of them. He’s just as likely not to become an elite WR, but it’s certainly possible. Just as likely as Boldin being an elite WR for the Eagles next year.

I don't love Jackson as much as other.
Although he is a good player, just not a pro bowler. And I’m fine with that. I just want both first round picks.
To be honest, if we trade both picks to go up and take a tackle, I would be just as pissed. I don’t care if you package 1 pick to move up. But I want to use both # 1 picks this year. I don’t want to give one way for Boldin.

Jackson
He wasn’t a pro bowler last year, but there’s no reason to think he won’t become one this year. WR is a hard position for a rookie in the NFL, let alone for a rookie with the Eagles.
Yea, their in a good position. I think they’re more likely to trade up with some of those 5th round picks for more in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. They have a great track record with those mid-round picks.

I understand he will improve,
But remember, he got to play due to injury to Brown and Curtis.
I think he will be good, maybe not a probowler, but very good.
Probowls mean nothing anyway.

injury to curtis and brown had nothing to do with desean's succeess or playing time...
first off, brown will be lucky if he makes the team this year. even when brown was healthy. he was deactivated half of the time. second, when curtis was there, he was another “target” that a defense had to pay attention to. when it was just desean at the beginning of the season, cb’s probably paid more attention to him because he was the flashy new rookie wr1 who has had attitude issues before. so if anything, having curtis and brown (well, maybe not brown) around would help desean get open more because a defense would have to pay attention to more than one player.

Draft picks
Dont be so quick to say let’s use both our draft picks. If you look at Andy’s history with draft picks he is “ok” at best. I take issue with people placing too much value on draft picks. Are they important? Sure. But they are no guarantee.
If backed up against a wall, I would choose a proven player, in this particular case Boldin but it applys to others as well, over a draft pick any day of the week. I want someone that has shown they are worthy to be in the NFL, not just predicted to do well because of their college careers. Don’t misinterpret, I think draft picks are important, but if we always horde them to build for the future we may never have the full “right now” that we could have. NFCCG’s are great, but they’re no substitute for SB’s!

This means nothing. He’s gotta say stuff like this. They will go after these receivers. Even if they don’t land any of them, they should be involved to makes sure the Giants give up as much as possible because they are gonna go after these guys too.
I think our receivers are fine, but we really don’t have a #1. I would give up a lot for anquan, maybe a #1 and a #2 or curtis.

Excuse me if I've missed something...
But Anquan Boldin is 6’1" and 217… he’s not particularly fast either, nor does he have a spectacular vertical leap.
I just don’t understand why everybody is so high on this guy. I know he is incredibly tough and physical, but he’s not that tall red-zone target everybody seems to want, nor is he really much different than Jason Avant in size or speed.
Have I missed the boat or something? Or does this guy just have a lot of value right now because he was lining up across from Larry for the whole season and opponents chose to double up on him rather than Anquan?

Reid mentions Hank Baskett
as though he’s definitely on the team next year.
What’d I miss?
