Draft Preview: Knowshon Moreno
Yes, i know you guys were expecting this. Knowshon Moreno is an idol to many Georgia fans. He is a solid player, and a great person on and off the field. I have had the great honor of meeting him and wish that one day, i can see him in midnight green and silver. So without further ado.... Knowshon Moreno.
Who is He? & High School Career
Knowshon Moreno is the former starting half back for the Georgia Bulldogs. He is listed as probably the top RB to go in the draft, first round. He also just might become the sucessor to Brian Westbrook. He grew up in Belford, New Jersey, a prime spot where future NFL stars have been breed. He led his high school team to three state titles. He finished his high school career with 6,268 career rushing yards, 128 touchdowns, and 1782 points. Coming out of High school, he was ranked #10 by rivals.com in the runningback category.
via i.cnn.net
Career at the University of Georgia
Knowshon redshirted in 2006 and was a redshirt freshman in his 2007 season. After a solid spring workout, Coach Richt gave him time with then starting back Thomas Brown. But after solid showing after solid showing, he began to see his touches increase as the games went on. When Thomas Brown injured his collar bone, it was announced that Knowshon would be the feature back. His first game as a starter, 157 yards rushing. He joined the great Herschal Walker as the only two freshmen to ever rush 1000 yards plus in their freshmen year. He finished the season with 1,334 yards on 248 carries for 14 touchdowns. Knowshon returned for round two, with a team ranked number one in the preseason. While they did not reach their main destination, a BCS Title shot or even a BCS game, Knowshon finished the 2008 season with 1,792 yards of total offense (1,400 rushing on 250 carries and 392 yards on 33 receptions) and scored 18 touchdowns (16 rushing, 2 receiving). He announced that he would enter the NFL draft on Jan. 7, 2009.
Knowshon and the Combine
At the combine, Knowshon rep on the bench 28 times. He ran a lackluster 40, at 4.60. His vertical jump was 35.5 and ran an amazin three cone drill at 6.84. Ran the 20 yard shuttle at 4.27 and the 60 yard at 11.63. Would have had a strong combine had it not been for his 40, which in turn hurt his stocks.
Positives and Negatives of Knowshon
Positives
Knowshon is a beast, plain and simple. While he does not have the killer speed of say DeSean Jackson, he is a tremendous athelate, which helps him take his running game to another level. Where he lacks in burner speed, he covers with probably the best elusiveness from the entire running back depth of the draft. He rarely falls at the first tackle, having a knack at either avioding the tackler or breaking the tackle. He has a sixth sense on where the hole will open and has the patients to wait behind his line until a suitable opening opens. Great lateral quickness, and has strenght to power through and push piles. Great blocker and will put defenders on their bums. Draws comparision to Brian Westbrook because of solid recieving skills. Can line out wide and runs solid routes, to compliment his soft hands. Solid leaping ability has made him a repeated star on Youtube.com. Solid competator, trusts in himself and wants the ball with game on the line.
Negatives
Not many, lacks the burning speed that some teams look in a running back. Not as big as some team might look for. A little over hyper. Could be a good thing for Eagle fans.
Final Overview
Knowshon brings depth and stabablity to a weakened and aging running back core for the Eagles. He is an exciting playmaker and very vocal, a player the Eagles fans will definatly enjoy. He is a multiple threat and draws comparison, rightly so, to Brian Westbrook. Can spell Westy and develop under him until Knowshon is ready to take the helm. In short, a great use of our first round draft pick.

I can't back it up with a why....
BUT, I really like this kid, he seems to have all the tools to succeed, and i as well would LOVE to see him in an Eagles uniform.

2nd round
Think one of McCoy, Brown, Greene or Ringer will be available when we pick in the 2nd? I’d be happy with any of them

possibly
Knowshon, Wells, and Brown will be the first 3 taken and not in that order possibly. Some insiders predict Brown will jump ahead of Well by the time the draft comes around. After that most predict McCoy will be the 4th RB off the board. So the top 4 should be gone by the time the second round rolls around to us, but the others are generally thought of as early third round backs. I would be happy with the top 4 after that, not so sure.

At this point, he’s my #1 wish for the #21 pick

I agree actually … and I think it’s because of the anuj brainwashing …
Anuj you are as bad as me and my man crush on Celek.

I think Pettigrew goes before 21,
I think we have a better than 50/50 chance of drafting Moreno and trading 28 plus another pick to 15-18 for Michael Oher.

Beanie
I had to vote Beanie.. I like Moreno, but i just love Beanies style of running the football. I have a serious crush on the power running game..

Moreno gets the clear nod for his 3rd down ability and hands out of the backfield

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...
We won’t get Wells or Moreno. We just won’t. I think we’ll trade up and get a top tackle. We’ll take TE in the second, and than a RB in the 3rd.
I like you Anuj, but I think you’re geared up for a very disappointing draft day!

yep
you hit the nail on the head with that comment. They are not drafting Knowshon. Why would they waste a pick on a RB in the first round to carry the ball what, 5 times a game?

Yeah, we'll trade up
Trading the #28 pick plus 3rd rounder to 15-18 and draft Oher.
The only problem is that Andre Smith sucked so bad, Oher may go earlier now.

We wont take no for an answer!!
We must take Moreno!! Westy and Moreno in the backfield……whoa. Steve Spagnoulo is gonna have to preach 44 eyes on those two sons of bitches. “Hey offense!, get ur asses up and give me 22 more eyes on Moreno!” LMAO! Its too bad Spags is with the Rams now, it would have been hilarious. Eagles must pick Moreno with the first pick. If they are lucky, pick up Pettigrew with the second pick. If no pettigrew, get Oher or Britton. Get a tight end later. any of the top 4 tight ends are better than shoebel.

need a complement, not the same back
knowsean and westy are very alike. i feel as though beanie would be a better complement to westbrook, being as that would be more of a ‘thunder and lightning’.
just my take
by kbizzleb on Mar 19, 2009 1:39 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
problem is we need to draft westbrook’s replacement, not his complement at this point… and Wells has a lack of motivation, poor film study qualities, can’t block, doesn’t want to learn to block and can’t catch the football. those are all things our RBs need to do… how will he survive in this offense?

not beanie
…we don´t need a back who can´t catch! Wells doesn´t fit our system! Knowshon does!
and if the eagles really are on the clock at #21 this year and Knowshon is still on the board, i will be pretty pissed off if they don´t pick him!
otherwise if he´s gone the birds should pick up donald brown! i read the report from Lawlor´s site and he is pretty impressed by Brown and brown would fit our system too!

awesome preview anuj
very good stuff. and im definetly sold. if hes available and the birds dont take him i’ll be more upset then when they drafted mcnabb (ps. im a huge mcnabb fan now just not on that draft day)
now id like to see another preview of another back to see if youd give them the same kind of excellent draft preview.

This is tough because this write up is convincing. It comes down to if you think BWest should be replaced soon or if we just need a complement back. If he’s going to be replaced, then Moreno is great. Looking at the draft, I can really see him falling to us with very few teams in front of us with a need at RB. But, I think 36 has two or three good years left, so I think using a 1st round pick is a little unnecessary. Drafting a bigger back in the 2nd or 3rd makes sense. If Moreno is picked, I think it will be the beginning of the end for Westbrook, but I’ll feel comfortable with a our future in Moreno’s hands.
Right now, I would like to see Pettigrew and Britton taken in the 1st round.
