Joe Mays
I have heard a couple ppl saying how they might want to draft a linebacker in the draft and i was just kinda wondering what is happening with Joe Mays. Mays was a standout last preseason being all over the field and as a second year rookie i kinda wanna see him get some reps in mini and training camp before we go out drafting a linebacker. I get that preseason is preseason but i see potential in him.

I thought he was a rock in the middle. I guess they are looking to upgrade
Tank Daniels not Mays.

The gmen cut him on the last roster cutdown, i think.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

But I don't think he is guaranteed a roster spot. I guess this move will just add competition during camp.

yeah he was a RFA it would be dumb to not tender him for depth and competition.

Joe Mays impressed the heck out of me last year. I remember him being all over the field making tackles. He has good football instincts, it seems. I’m sure they still have faith in him. He’ll compete.

Size issue
Along with being a rookie last year, Joe Mays is only 5’11. He’ll have to have one hell of a training camp to get playing time this year.

He might only be 5’11" but he is a beast. The only position I can see him playing is MLB, so I think he will be kept as flexibility to move Bradley wherever.

JJ praised him over and over … that’s a good sign because as you all know JJ = God.

No argument there lol
And JJ spoke unto the defense, “Thou shalt blitz the fuck out of them”

Patriots preseason game..
he pretty much made every tackle on the drive and they were allll over the place.. you think he could come in a take over for Jordan Gocong if either start to slip?

he's a great depth guy
In no way do i think he would start. A little bit of a size issue… but he can make tackles and that’s all that really matters. I think he has a great opportunity to be a backup at the MIKE linebacker position. I’m not sure if he’s as fast as gocong or jordan, but if he is, he could probably backup at all linebacker positions
Representing CANADA eh?

I know he has experience
at MIKE backer, but that size issue comes into effect there! I can’t picture a strong middle backer at 5’11"…you want a guy that can see over the line…I agree with you that he could be a back-up…but he will probably only be exceptional as a situational backup in blitzing situations where he doesn’t need to see, he just needs to blow up a gap. He is an athletic ANIMAL!!!

the bullet! there’s always room on our squad for role players like that
i’m comfortable with our LB core going forward but if a guy like Matthews falls to us in the draft i would certainly mull the possibility of taking him to replace gocong

were you
not happy with Gocong? I thought he was solid. If anything I was a little skeptical of the other side with that Gaither/Jordan combo.

I think Gocong is a weak link
If you look at Gocong’s numbers, he was a starter for a whole year but he only had about the same number of tackles as both Jordan and Gaither neither of whom played a whole season. Plus Gocong had some horrible plays. He missed his gap and let Adrian Petersen get to the second level untouched for that long touchdown run. There were numerous times over the season where he overran plays and let people get behind him. He got abused both in blocking and coverage by Chris Cooley in the first Redskins game. I don’t get what JJ sees in the guy. He only had two sacks, and one of those was against the Falcons on a play where nobody blocked him and Ryan fell down. I agree that neither Gaither or Jordan are great, but the only real weak link I see on this defense is Gocong.

yeah Gocong
over pursued a lot.

gocong was involved in one of my favorite moments this year.
when brandon jacobs decided to hurdle asante samuels, gocong turned that guy inside out. pretty cool. that being said i wouldn’t mind seeing gocong used on the line at end.

Joe Mays on Youtube
i remember watching Joe on youtube before we even drafted him…hes very fast and seems to be around the ball ALL the time. I hope we at least give him a chance to play in a game this year.

I definitely think he's a keeper
as a role player, special teamer at worst.
I’d be surprised if he moves into the top 4 at LB, but he’s definitely got the instincts to play the game.
The thing I’d hate to see is us revert to the days when we had small, speed guys out there and got abused in the run game. I realize we’re better now largely because of our DTs, but also I think that’s why Gaither/Bradley/Gocong were initially teamed together, because they were all smart with enough size to take on the run and enough speed not to be liabilities in coverage. In theory, anyway.
