Heyward-Bey Drawing Interest?
Is Darrius Heyward-Bey on the Eagles radar?
Heyward-Bey is a 6'2" 210 pound wide receiver from the University of Maryland. Recently, he ran a 4.3/40 at the NFL Scouting Combine. Heyward-Bey is coming off a pair of strong seasons at UM where he accumulated over 1400 yards and 8 touchdowns; averaging 15.4 yards per catch.
It is no surprise that the Baltimore Ravens are working Heyward-Bey out as he is projected to be a late first round pick and Baltimore, who is in need of wide receiver help, holds the 26th overall pick. However, it seems that the Eagles are also a team that have Heyward-Bey scheduled to work out for them.
The Philadelphia Eagles have also arranged a workout in College Park, and three more teams - the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, St. Louis Rams and Vikings - have extended invitations to Heyward-Bey.
Heyward-Bey is a player that presents game breaking ability. He has great vertical speed and is excellent at creating seperation from press coverage. Also, he has the ability to make tough catches with a 40" vertical leap and good hands. Additionally, he has the ability to turn a short catch into a long gain.

Interesting
Definitely has great size, and good speed considering. Is he expected to be available at 21?

I'm not a draft expert
But I would think so. A lot of teams are scared of drafting a WR in the first as evidenced by last years draft. Besides the top 2 WRs, I can see the rest falling late in the first and beyon.d

Sounds like a good WC WR.
At first, I would be kind of shocked if we drafted a WR in the first, but if this kid turned out to be a real productive player we would have a real nice set of skill players for the future.

I read that,
I don’t think he makes it to the second round though. There is no way we are considering him for the first round. Especially with Percy Harvin and Nicks still likely on the board when they pick.

Baltimore is gonna work him out with Flacco
I think they pick him first round.

Mock Drafts
I know these are pure speculation and rarely completely correct. But both McShay and Kiper have Heyward-Bey going to Chicago at pick #18. And I seriously doubt that he would get to the Ravens unless they are looking to trade, as the Vikings, Dolphins, and Falcons may all be looking for receivers as well.
In my opinion a receiver is not something to get in the first round of the draft. DeSean worked out great for us, lucky us, but for the most part it is a position that does not pan out based on how much you pay with a first round pick and salary. It would be better to pick up a solid RB or TE or OT and get a WR later and hope that he turns into something, remember DeSean was a later 2nd rounder.
I guess my point is I just really don’t like taking WR early, I don’t think it’s worth it.

man were we lucky to get DeSean that late
thank god for “character issues”… esp considering he seemed to keep it under control last year (well except for the fumble at the 1 yard line thing)

Nicks..
IMO.. will put up the best numbers outside of maybe crabtree.. watch his highlights hes a playmaker very very athletic

I don't like Nicks, he's a big guy with great hands, but doesn't have much in regards to YAC. He
didn’t seem so fast and came down pretty easy on the videos I say. But again, maybe its me.

Nicks...
He has never really had good hands, which is why he was pretty under the radar until he exploded in the Bowl Game this season. He seems like a poor man’s Braylon Edwards to me. I don’t like receivers with poor hands that much, many can make a living out of it (TO), but in the end I want a guy that can catch over a guy that can get open.

Intriguing
I’d like to see us bring in a WR to add some competition to our group, and would prefer to do it via draft and not free agency. That said, taking a WR in the 1st round is risky.
Again it boils down to needing OL/TE/RB more. I just don’t see us going WR in the 1st.

Can he be a return guy?
I know nothing about him since I rarely watch college ball, but I’m hoping the FO takes care of the return game this offseason, at least for kick-offs if they plan on Demps possibly starting and/or seeing significant action.
I really don’t want to see DeSean hurt returning a kick though I could live with him returning punts.

I would take him in the second
but not the first round. I don’t really like the idea of taking a receiver in the first that isn’t a sure fire #1 reciever I would much rather take the 4th or 5th tackle or a running back or even if he falls pettigrew

I'm just waiting
to see if Eagles pull off a trade before figuring out the draft board at this point.
If they fill in TE or OT before the draft, it simplifies early draft pick needs. You can pretty much draft a decent kick return guy in the 4th round if you’re concerned and fill out the WR5 spot.
Eagles figured out last season to not rotate in 5 guys midway through the season. Whoever they draft won’t likely contribute immediately if they draft a WR.

Sup man, long time bro.
I gotta work out a trade with you next season, Common, I gave you AP and you won everygame since. You were 0-2 going into that trade. Good season bro, I hope I get selected for next years league.

hey, what's up
Can’t say you got a bad deal though. Forte put up virtually identical numbers to AP last season in points. And you got Cassel and Randy Moss out of it…both of whom had decent years if not fantastic for Moss.

It was a good deal for both of us. I just can't allow an autodraft this year.

Not impressed...
I went to Univ of Maryland and follow the team fairly closely…I’ve never been impressed by Heyward Bey…I think his workout was much more impressive than his skills as a WR…I would rather Nicks myself…

Have to disagree....
I lived in Baltimore for several years until just recently and went to a handful of UM games. I’ve always thought he was a very strong player with an NFL body and skill set. I’m not sure if I like him on the Eagles (too similar of a player to Avant) but I think he has the potential to be a legitimate wideout in the league.

agree with you 100% Poppi
But like JGC said I am to waiting to see if we make a move for Edwards or Boldin first.. Im starting to think.. If all the tackle on the eagles radar are taking they might go with the best RB or best overall player on the board.. I dont know about everyone else but i feel some what comfortable with our O line as it stands now we have plenty of options at this point if Herrmans or Shawn can play LT and cole plays guard.. If no WR trade happens i would love to see us pick up Nicks and McCoy both would be great compliments to are WR corps and Rbs

with his speed on the field with jackson i kind of like the idea because they would be able to stretch the field more allowing for curtis and celek more room to work the underneath

He has great vertical speed
Can anybody tell me what vertical speed is? Does he jump up and down really fast?
by Chubby on Mar 13, 2009 8:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
vertical speed… basically line up and run down the sideline as fast as you can… easiest way to explain it…
