Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Interesting Draft Story

There was a rumor after last years draft that the Eagles wanted to take DJax in the first round at 19, but Heckert told Andy he would still be around in the 2nd. The Eagles then traded out of the first round, and then back once again, to eventually take Djax AFTER they picked up Trevor Laws.

Well, I just read a conflicting story that questions that rumor. Appearently the Eagles did have plans to draft an OT last year. I had heard that Andy was the most interested in Chris Williams, the OT from Vanderbilt, but when the Bears threw a curveball and drafted him at 14, the only OT they liked was Brandon Albert of UVA (he played Guard at college, but would have played LT if it wasn't for Eugene Monroe). The Eagles knew that the Cheifs were in the market for an OT, and Albert shurly wouldn't make it past them at 17.

So Andy got on the phone and tried to trade for the Cards 16th pick. The Cards wanted DRC, and didn't think that he would be around at 19, so they declined. The Cards then tipped off the Cheifs that the Eagles wanted Albert and were trying to trade in front of the Chiefs to get him. The Cheifs GM then got on the phone with Matt Milan of the Lions, who were on the clock at 15 and stayed on the line until a deal was worked out so KC would be able to draft Alberts at 15. Andy never even got a chance to make his offer.

It wasn't until the Eagles were on the clock that they received the offer from Carolina that included their 2009 1st rounder. What Andy was planning to do before that? No idea. Andy did not, however, plan to trade out of the first round until his options to move up were unavaible.

Could stock piling late rounders be ammo to move up a few slots in the first this year and get the players they like? I hope so. One things for sure: we will not be calling the Cards this year if that really happened.

I heard that same story last year.

I believe that is exactly what happened. I hope they don’t trade, rather draft Pettigrew and Wells, Or a tackle.

You still think we will draft either of those players? As have a hard time seeing either of those guys as Andy’s kind of guys. Wells isn’t well rounded enough. I will agree, I think there is at least a chance at Pettigrew. I youtubed him the other day and he is a very good short pass threat, kind of Chad Lewis-esk. Was Chad Lewis Andys pick though?

With Andy, who knows

I hope so though, We realy struggled running last year. I heard they like McCoy as well. But his stock is rising really fast. He may go before Wells.

I bet Andy trades up for Oher at around 15 or so. I hope not, we need a TE and RB badly. I know we have been trying for Boldin, but that isn’t happening.

Wouldn’t surprise me if we get Holt, he should be getting cut by the end of this week. He is only 32 or 33 and a change of scenery may help him.

you think we

need a TE more than a starting left tackle?

really?

by IronHank on Mar 10, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe not

but there are a glut of good Ts this year, not so much with TE. Supposedly.

Just something to think about.

The other question you have to ask

is if you want a rookie starting a LT instead of Andrews or Herremans. If the answer is no then it isn’t as necessary to take a tackle as early in the draft.

Agree 100%

I’d rather have an experienced G shift out to T unless we get THE dominant tackle on the board, the step-in-right-away-and-dominate type.

I can’t see Wells getting any love at all from Andy.

Donald Brown (Conneticut) seems like a more obvious Andy type RB but he gets limited mention on this board.

interesting find.. but i’m pretty glad things happened this way… no matter the cause. we got two excellent guys in the second round. and now we may get a quality player with Carolina’s pick this year. no complaints here

I am glad this happened too, although it would be nice to have the OT situations all figured out right now.

Man Foos05, these past few days have been killing me.

There has been no news, anywhere.

Why do you think we were trying to sign McFadden for? Where would he fit in, would he have started, and would we have trade Sheldon to Arizona. I am so bored with no news, I need to stir up something, what do you thinK? Chime in if you like Clyde.

I’m still not convinced we were actually after him at all. I never saw us trading Brown… And depth is great at all, but why have 4 corners that could start? I can understand having a starting quality 3rd corner, but that fourth to me is just a waste of money… Honestly, I think that it may have been a rumor that got stirred up thinking that they would sign him and trade Brown… I don’t think there was anything there to begin with.

The only way I can find what the Cards did defensible is if they called the Cheifs and said ‘hey, were on the clock now, the Eagles want to draft this guy Alberts, if you want him you need to trade for our pick and not take DRC’. The fact that they let them know before it was their pick is indefensible in my mind. To bad we couldn’t make them pay with a nice butt-whoppin in the playoffs.

Uh, this sounds like total bullshit.

1) Why would the Eagles reveal who they intended to draft?

The whole point of the draft is to analyze your needs and have a pretty good idea of the other teams’ needs so you have an idea of who is going when. They don’t just willy-nilly reveal their draft strategy. The less your opponent knows, the better off you are.

2) Who the hell was actually surprised that the Bears took Chris Williams?

The Bears had a glaring need for an OT. I really doubt this is something that took Andy Reid by surprise. I think if he really wanted Chris Williams, he knew he’d have to trade up to before the Bears (really, before the Broncos at 12, because there was a run of four teams with needs on the O Line starting with Denver, Carolina, Chicago and Detroit) to have a shot at him.

ALSO:

3) Why wouldn’t they have just called the Lions in the first place? The Lions also needed an OT, and our picks would have more value with them than Arizona.

I think what REALLY happened was the Eagles and the Chiefs both had the same two players in mind to fill a void (Albert and Williams) and when one of them came off the board, they both needed to scramble to get the pick from the Lions to take the other. We just lost out.

(that, or the Lions realized what a hot commodity they had on their hands all of the sudden that an OT that many picked to go in the top 10 was available at their pick with many suitors, and they called around and took the best package they could get)

Regardless, I really doubt it went down the way that article says it did.

well the Lions also choose an OT. The Cards were the one team everyone knew wouldn’t take an OT. It could have all been speculation, I don’t know. I mean why would the Cheifs trade up 2 spots if someone WASN"T after the player they wanted to draft.

by Clyde Simmons on Mar 10, 2009 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

Like I said, Albert was the last top OT on the board at 15, and the Chiefs saw that if they didn’t trade up to get him, either the Lions would take him or someone else would trade up to get him. No one had to “tip them off” that Albert was a huge pick and was going to get taken soon. There were plenty of people who thought Albert might be taken 5th by the Chiefs.

The top 3 OTs had just been selected and with Arizona and Detroit ahead they wanted to be sure to get there guy. Let’s not forget that Detroit selected an OT Gosder Cherilus with there pick so obviously the Chiefs had reason to worry that they might take Albert.

I don't think there's "defensible" and "not defensible" in a draft ...

… it’s cutthroat, it’s Hungry Hungry Hippos out there … you do what you have to get as much as you can.

By the next season, bygones have to be bygones. Sure, guys like Pioli and Belichick or Reid and Childress deal with each other because of familiarity, but if a team has what you need, I can’t imagine there’s any “nah man, the Chiefs screwed us last year, don’t call them!” going on.

So what are the Cards doin helping the Cheifs?
