Heart Breaking

This is heart breaking. He never wanted to go..

How did the Eagles F.O. let this happen?!?!

Nobody held a gun to his head ... but

Obviously his agent must have pushed him into this big time though, looking for the maximum possible payoff from resigning Dawkins, rather than looking out for Dawkins best interests both financially and emotionally..

Bad move Dawk. Betrayal and running away never works out even when the money looks good.

by Andrew B on Mar 1, 2009 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

It was probably him as much as his agent

What would you do if you were in that situation? As much as I would like to think I’d stay with the Eagles, I’d be lying to myself.

by exitfare on Mar 1, 2009 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

I'd stay

I don’t value excessive amounts of money as much as some other people seem to.

Dawkins has earned enough money to keep himself, his kids, and his grandkids very comfortable without ever having to work again for the rest of their lives.

If I had $10-20-30+ million in the bank and was doing something I ,in a place I loved, with people I loved and getting paid reasonably for it, I’d keep doing it rather than jumping ship and upending my life for a few million more.

There’s way more to life than money, and if you haven’t learned that yet, you will eventually. Honor, committment, love of friends, camraderie, and other things trump the grubbing for money as you grow older.

Brian knows that too, because you could hear it in his voice, but he didn’t follow through on it yesterday.

There is way more to life than money

but you can’t honestly say that when a team is going to give you more money and more years in what is obviously the twilight of your career, that you wouldn’t take that? I know I would. Dawkins is obviously torn, as evidenced by that interview, but beyond his love for the Eagles, his love for the game and his concern to take care of his family for a long time obviously trumps that.

Andrew B that's a pretty bold and unfair statement to make

for starters, you don’t know how much he has in the bank, you don’t know his financial situation either

second, bear in mind this is a guy who has watched eagles FO let other very influential and dear Eagles go in the past (Jeremiah Trotter, Hugh Douglas, Duce Staley, Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent) etc. so he realizes Eagles FO is just trying to cover their bottom line and for them its business as usual.

finally, the man has got to do what’s best for himself and his family, obviously. The broncos overpaid, and you’d be lying and you know it, if you say excessive amounts money doesn’t mean as much to you as it does to some others. Most of the people that say that only do until they have the money staring them in the face….and then end up going with the money instead.

Dude you are one angry person

Enough with the betrayal talk already. It’s getting old.

by MRPH on Mar 1, 2009 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

He gave everything he had for thirteen seasons the FO didn’t resign him and he is going to make bank. ANYONE and I mean anyone put in that type of position would try and get as much money as they can, if you had his money and were offered more than you had or would receive with the Eagles you would take the money and anyone who says they would do otherwise is full of shit. yes he was the heart and soul of this franchise while he was hear but to say he has betrayed the Eagles is excessively harsh. If the FO is going to deal with the situation like a business deal why shouldn’t he. he was upset and you can hear it because he wanted to stay in Philly but they did not give him the kind of deal he thought he was worth so his heart is in Philadelphia but he is in Denver, its a conflict of interest but a decision I would have made as well. He did what was best for him and his family. I wish he was still an Eagle next season but good luck in Denver and he will always be an Eagle.

So you're blaming Dawkins for this then?

Heck, come on if you have a chance to make more money, you’re going to take it. A lot of us would do the same in his shoes. I’m just angry at the Eagles for being stubborn YET again here. Yes, it’s true their ‘letting old guys go’ strategy has worked well most of the time, but I think this was a guy they had to keep around, he earned it.

Yes, you’re right B-Dawk wanted to go and this was his decision, but come on. Betrayal? The guy’s got only a few years left…I wouldn’t necessarily call it a “bad move.” Heck, I’m real sad that he’s gone…the guy’s an absolute LEGEND for the green, white and black. Best leader in football. These days though, free agents go places to make money. I think Dawkins (or his agent) knew time was running out on the old career and it was time to move on. We see this a lot more these days. The guy will always be an Eagle in my book and I am not going to deem it “betrayal” in anyway. The Eagles had their chance to put enough up, but decided not to. He’ll be missed.

by phantom818 on Mar 1, 2009 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

Because the Broncos significantly overpaid

Dawkins wasn’t so upset that he didn’t take the 7.2 mill guaranteed. It was a business decision.

by DK Jr. on Mar 1, 2009 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

This is heart wrenching to hear. I can’t remember the last time I was this sad about a player leaving. Maybe Iverson, but you were mentally prepared for that. This is different, Dawk’s thing just came out of nowhere. All indications pointed to the Eagles re-signing him, and then this happened. This is terrible, I thought today would be better, but it’s mot.

by Philly Homer on Mar 1, 2009 10:44 AM EST reply actions

GCobb...

Had the best article on this by far. By far. And while it’s excruciatingly sad to see, this is a business, with two players- Dawk and the Eagles. Both made affirmative actions, and those actions resulted in him being in Denver.

oh dawk

we love you too. someday we’ll welcome you back.

by bsencore on Mar 1, 2009 12:00 PM EST reply actions

hearing the last part of this interview is just really disappointing.

by Bugzy on Mar 1, 2009 12:11 PM EST reply actions

if you act like you wouldn't take the money

you’re out of your mind. it’s a respect thing, it’s a being-wanted-by-someone-else thing, and it’s an opportunity to provide to get your last, remarkably huge payday.

of course he’s going to take it. the issue is that the eagles don’t think he deserves it/would rather throw the money back on their gigantic 40 million dollar pile.

they’re wrong on every and all fronts

You listen to that and have to wonder, I mean assume, that he would have stayed with Philly if they had given him something close to the Bronco’s deal. Hell, they had enough money. Who is going to replace him? I’m still wondering what the F….

As long as there is evil in the world, the cowboys will have their fans.

wow

When you guys posted that he couldnt finish the interview the other day, i had no idea it was like that…

I cannot believe the Eagles could come close enough to keep him.

I love Brian Dawkins

There will never be another!

I love Brian Dawkins too.. when he started to choke up on that interview, my throat began to get tight too.

God Speed Brian Dawkins. You shall always be love, and sorely missed!

To hell with money and business. That is a good man in an emotional and moral conflict. My heart goes out to him.

Thank you

A voice of reason finally. I can’t believe some of the other posts in here. The guy has been a model citizen for 13 years here and all of the sudden he’s a dirtbag? And why? Because he was faced with what must have been a very difficult decision, and he chose to do what he thought was right for him.

by MRPH on Mar 1, 2009 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

hey maybe he will be back

as some sort of coaching role in 2 or 3 years(or at least i hope that happens)

FO dropping the ball

Why did we not use the franchise tag on BDawk?

Ridiculous that it came to this.

by andyreidswaistline on Mar 1, 2009 4:08 PM EST reply actions

This is killing me... the (the Eagles) do this stuff all to often!!!!

This is brutal to watch knowing that he won’t be on the sideline anymore. Every year when free agency opens up I hope and pray the Eagles make a move(s) that allows them to improve the team and yet year after year they do little to nothing, letting go of those players that give the heart and soul to the team and that the fan truly love. In a city where you have some of the toughest fans around the Eagles management and ownership does nothing to keep those that are loyal and reward the fans.

Living in N.Jersey and having to deal with all the Giant’s fans I now hear them all breathing a sigh of relief knowing that he is gone… many have comment on the fact it’s going to be easier the them (the Giants).

I hope Dawkins wins and wins often in Denver, I’ll be cheering for him.

Fuck

This hurts. I cannot believe Dawkins is no longer an Eagle. Unbelievable. When the Broncos play in Philly….it’s gonna be emotional.

I thought Dawkins was in it for more than the money, I guess not. This isn’t a terrible thing for the Eagles though, as Dawkins had become a huge liability in pass coverage lately. The Eagles will struggle next year, though. You can’t rip the heart out of a team and expect it to keep on the same path it was on. I’m not even an Eagles fan, but Dawkins is one of my favorite players, not so much for his talent but for the passion he has for the game. I’ll probably get his Denver jersey.

by hof8231 on Mar 2, 2009 10:55 AM EST reply actions

come on

if you love dawkins for his talent and passion for the game, buy his eagles jersey. that’s where his passion was born. think about it — would you buy a joe montana chiefs jersey?
