Big Back Option

alot of ppl have said that we need a big back to compliment BWestbrook in the back field and take some pressure off him and i could not agree more and i have heard some discussion of maaaaaaaybe but not likely Brandon Jacobs if he dowsnt get resigned by the Giants but another option i saw in the FA list on the main page was Dominic Rhodes, i think he might be a good option for that big back, he could push a pile on 3-inches and goalline situations and he was part of the 2006 Colts Super Bowl team so he has been to the dance before i think he might be a good option for us as a cheap option

when are we going to realize that this is never going to happen. andy reid will never let a running back within 500 feet of the novacare complex that lacks the ability to catch and pass block. If we do pick up a “short yardage back” it will be from the scrap yard.

Why

Why do we want them to sign a big back? Lets have someone eat up a roster space whom they will not play?

I Agree With BleedGreen5 Here

Cap’n Andy may be set in his ways and philosophies, but he’s not stupid. I have noticed a pattern throughout his tenure; if during a season a glaring weakness is shown, he’ll be quick to plug that hole in the off-season. For example, in 2004, he finally signed a stud receiver in T.O. after it became clear that Thrash, Mitchell, and Pinkston were not enough to get the Birds over the hump. In 2006, he drafted a big, talented defensive tackle in Brodrick Bunkley after a season in which the Eagles had trouble stuffing the run (though Bunkley did not make starter until the following season, he has since become one the Birds’ most invaluable defensive players). He signed Jeff Garcia to have veteran leadership from the backup QB position, which paid off big for us when McNabb went down (and made us forget about the awful one-season debacle of Mike McMahon). Last year, after the Eagles finished as one of the worst teams in the league at creating turnovers, he went out and got Asante Samuel. Our inability this year to punch the ball in at the goal line or convert on 3rd and short needs to be addressed with a proper 3rd-down back, and I think Andy will surprise everyone here. After all, he’s coaching Adrian Peterson in the Pro Bowl…this may be a chance for him to warm up to the merits of having a bruising running back.

He may also see this as ineffective blocking, which if is the case then he goes OL/TE/FB. Personally I see it as some of both.

nicely said jaws

i think we should nab a solid FB. If we do that we can get a second tier RB to spell and step in for BWest.

by royboy on Feb 6, 2009 1:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

agreed

I think fullback is a greater need than a ’true’powerback. a good fullback and a healthy shawn andrews can make anyone a good short yardage back. If we keep both first round picks I think we should grab a solid back in the first round. I know the eagles probably wont take a running back in the first round but if we keep both picks well have the luxury of taking the best player available and good tailbacks are generally available in the late first round.

I was going to save this tidbit for the draft game…but I see the Eagles selecting Quinn Johnson from L.S.U. For a fullback he has good speed, he is a good pass blocker, but his best ability is to catch balls out of the backfield. Andy always likes a good Ball handler!

He also saw how bad we were on kick/punt returns in 07 so he drafted 2 players who were known for their return skills and also tried Booker at that position too.

"Philly is a hot team now and they are playing well on defense, Donovan has managed the game well and I don't think there is any team out there ... I think they beat the only team out there that had a chance to beat them, and I don't think there is anybody out there that is going to beat them. I'm on their bandwagon and I'm picking Philly to win the whole thing." - Giants RB Brandon Jabobs

Great Observation...

I hope you’re right!!!

Lots of wisdom up and down this thread

Also, I don’t see why we can’t hope for a guy who can run a little tougher and be a little more durable than BWest (or make BWest more durable by being useful for some carries) who can also catch out of the backfield.

I don’t care if they do it with improved blocking, a different back or what. I want to be able to line up on third-and-short, with the other team knowing we’re going to run it, and still get the first down.

That’s a beautiful thing.

Free Agent RBs

Okay,
These aren’t sexy, but let’s say the draft goes unexpectedly and we use the 1st round picks on other needs and not an RB.

I actually see a couple guys on this list with the potential to help. Richardson and Weaver are proven FBs, and LaMont Jordan could punch it in from the 1 and spell Westbrook. Rudi Johnson can gain a yard. Not sure if either of them can catch any, assuming no, but J.J. Arrington might be a good Westbrook No. 2.

Also for some reason I think Tony Hunt shows up at training camp :)

Anyway, here’s the list of the upcoming free agents at running back.

UNRESTRICTED:

J.J. Arrington, Cardinals.

Terrelle Smith, Cardinals.

Corey McIntyre, Bills.

Lorenzo Neal, Ravens.

Kevin Jones, Bears.

Jason Wright, Browns.

Cedric Benson, Bengals.

Tatum Bell, Broncos.

Michael Pittman, Broncos.

Aveion Cason, Lions.

Rudi Johnson, Lions.

Moran Norris, Lions.

Cecil Sapp, Texans.

Dominic Rhodes, Colts.

Alvin Pearman, Jaguars.

Heath Evans, Patriots.

LaMont Jordan, Patriots.

Aaron Stecker, Saints.

Brandon Jacobs, Giants.

Derrick Ward, Giants.

Jesse Chatman, Jets.

Tony Richardson, Jets.

Correll Buckhalter, Eagles.

Darren Sproles, Chargers.

DeShaun Foster, 49ers.

Travis Minor, Rams.

Maurice Morris, Seahawks.

Leonard Weaver, Seahawks.

RESTRICTED:

P.J. Daniels, Ravens.

De De Dorsey, Bengals.

John Kuhn, Packers.

Naufahu Tahi, Vikings.

Zak Keasey, 49ers.

Add Lorenzo Neal to the FBs.

Kevin Jones, Cedric Benson maybe to the other list.

Jones was interested in coming here last year, no?

Not sure if he’s any kind of fit, but since we’re only looking for a guy to play the Levens/Buckhalter role …

LaMont Jordan is already 30 and Rudi Johnson is 29 … I’d rather try my luck with a 4th round 21 year old.

Well there's still an option on the roster no one's mentioned

Anyone mention Kyle Eckel? Sure he didn’t have get many carries, but he punched the ball through on a couple of short yardage plays and we got him mid season. Sure we should bring in competition (maybe not klecko) but give the guy a chance to take the FB/short yardage/alstott-esque role. That’s all the guy did at Navy and he was pretty good at it.

I agree I think he was brought in to late to really learn the offense and should have a legitimate shot this up coming season.
