Houshmanzadeh: "If the Eagles are interested in me, then I'll be interested in them"

Nfl_g_houshmandzadeh_580_medium

Cincy Jungle covered TJ Houshmanzadeh's free agent market radio tour this week, which featured sports radio spots in Chicago and Philadelphia. While on with 950 ESPN's Mike Missanelli TJ was asked whether he wanted out of Cincy, and responded rather cagey and noncommittal. However, when asked about the Eagles he was pretty direct.

  • "Actually, you know, Philly is a team that consistently wins, consistently have a good offense and I love the way Reid calls plays. I like Philadelphia."
  • "If the Eagles are interested in me, then I'll be interested in them."

Houshmanzadeh is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this summer. You can find the entire MIke Miss interview here and check out the reaction of Bengals fans here. Not surprisingly, they'd like to see the franchise tag slapped on him.

Update a few more TJ quotes from Philly.com

"I think McNabb is a fine quarterback," he said. "He's one of the best quarterbacks in the league, probably, I can't even think of another quarterback that has performed throughout his career the way he has and would be put in a situation like he was put in in Baltimore, but he bounced back very well.

"He was going to playoff games consistently with Todd Pinkston and Freddie Mitchell starting for him," Houshmandzadeh said. "Consistently performing well, making it easy for them. A quarterback is gonna make it easy for his receivers and his receiver is gonna make those catches that is out of his radius where he puts the ball, ball sails on him, you go get it, I mean it goes hand in hand. You just need somebody to make plays. And you make each other look good, and I think that's what he needs."

Of course, he was on Chicago radio the same day singing the praises of Rex Grossman...

Even more interesting was what he said about the Eagles/Bengals game that ended in a tie earlier this year

"Did you watch the Eagles and the Bengals game during the season? I was just giving Andy Reid, I was giving him an interview in person," Houshmandzadeh said. "That's all I was doing. I was giving him a three-month interview ahead of time. That's all."

The interview went well by the way. 12 catches, 149 yards, 1 TD that day...

What are the chances he is not tagged? I mean honestly I don’t know who else they would tag. What are the top 5 WR salaries? (I bet two of em are on the Cowboys)

if he really wants to come here, I hope Andy at least tries to lowball him.

I just want to make sure I understand this franchising a player twice in a row thing. If Carolina were to franchise gross they would have to pay him 120% of the 2009 franchise number because its their second time franchising him? this would equate to 10.14 million?

by Clyde Simmons on Feb 5, 2009 9:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i believe so… although, when most players sign the first franchise deal, or sign their inital contract, they stipulate that they cannot be franchised a second time…

Holy Chirst… TJ just dumped a drove a tanker truck full of aviation fuel onto the raging fire. This should get interesting fast…

annnnnddd… action!!!

conversely. Cincy already has one WR that doesn’t want to play there that they can’t dump (well, without a huge cap hit), do you think they’d franchise this one and have another pissed off player on their hands? also, it’s stupid for them to do so. they’re not going to contend in 2009. the only other reason to tag him would be to work out a long term deal, and you know he wants no part of that. they’re better off freeing up the cash and trying to bring in a few players and try to get things going in the right direction.

I haven't heard the interview...

…but is this one of those Chad Johnson type things, where you say to a Washington-based radio station you want to be on the Redskins, say to a Dallas-based radio station you want to be on the Cowboys…etc? Is he just anxious to leave Cincinnati or is Philadelphia actually his preferred destination?

I also love how he said: “I love the way Reid calls plays.” That makes exactly one human being on this planet :-) And I think he meant “I’d get the ball A LOT”

Agree - sort of

Any play maker would be good, and I’d love to have TJ on our team. But even if we bring him in we still need to address RB and TE, especially RB. These needs can be filled in the draft. But if we get TJ, too, then someone else has to go. Booker? Lewis? Baskett? Let Buck leave?

Westbrook and Buck are getting older. Who knows whether Buck will even be here. We’re not sure what we have in Booker. I’d love to see us draft a RB early.

I will admit TJ / Jax / Curtis / Avant would be a pretty damn good receiving corps.

So what are the actual CHANCES something happens

As much as I love rumors…
I don’t get too into them these days because of how stubborn the organization has been lately. T.J.‘s definitely a passionate guy and I was wondering how many of you recall his display of clear anger that he wasn’t getting a look during the Eagles game. It may have been another contest, but I remember seeing his frustration on the field at Fitzpatrick for not going back to him enough at crunch time.

The best thing about this, however, is that he keeps his frustration and intensity on the field, as opposed to it spilling over onto his off-the-field life. I like how he didn’t necessarily say I WANT OUT of Cinci in the interview, but did hint that he’d be interested in a team like Philly. I’ll take that honest answer…who wouldn’t be interested in the Eagles? Oh, and did I mention McNabb says we need weapons…AGAIN?

by phantom818 on Feb 5, 2009 12:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i look at it this way

where in the most demanding division in football. if we dont make big waves in the offseason then we loos. its that simple. Andy reid and McNabb is already on the hot seat and they both need to look good next year for each others sake unless they both could loos their jobs. with this opportunity put on our tables if there isnt a serious play for TJ the fans will rip Reid a new A hole and lurie ist far behind and he should know it too. i say we have about a 90% chance of making the play on TJ and about a 60 to 75% chance of landing him(unless hes playing us)

by NickPampani on Feb 5, 2009 2:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

WR is really a position I’d like them to target in free agency, and I think TJ (I’m not even attempting the last name until he’s signed) would be perfect.

The window isn’t closed, but neither are McNabb and Westbrook going to last forever. I hope the Eagles go “all in” this year as they seemed to before 2004.

If they sign TJ, then they get a guy who should be able to contribute right away rather than just count on the development of the existing guys or a draft pick contributing, since DJ’s success as a rookie seems the exception rather than the rule.

I’d love for them to pick up Jordan Gross, too.

RB is a need, too, but I think they can address that through the draft. (Though I’d like to see them use one of the first-rounders)

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

by BrianS on Feb 5, 2009 12:41 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree. Of all the positions WR is probably the most hit or miss in the draft. Rather see them sign a FA who is money in the Red Zone and use draft picks on the other positions we need. And I agree signing Gross needs to be a priority if he hits FA.

by Clyde Simmons on Feb 5, 2009 12:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The Eagles are not signing another #2

First, I don’t understand why TJ Houshmandzadeh is so coveted. He’s not a receiver you have to game plan for, he’s not a #1 at all and never has been.

Second, where does he play? Which of Curtis or Jackson gets moved to a slot role or do you think the Eagles are considering spending big money on a slot guy if TJ plays there?

Third, unless the front office has gone crazy, they are not paying big money for a guy like this. He’s 31 years old. It’s just something the Eagles don’t do.

by DK Jr. on Feb 5, 2009 1:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

What is a #1 WR? A guy who catches 90+ passes for over 1,000 yards consistently year after year? That’s TJ.

by JasonB on Feb 5, 2009 1:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

90+ catches and 1000 yards on the BENGALS is nothing to thumb your nose at.

by Clyde Simmons on Feb 5, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Are you looking at the same stats I am?

Two 1,000 yard seasons
Three 90 yard reception seasons
One season with double digit TDs

With Carson Palmer at QB and Chad Johnson on the opposite side of the field, for a team that is constantly passing because the defense hasn’t been good in years.

This is what I’m talking about, people acting like TJ is the second coming of T.O. and will bring glorious 2004 offensive levels with him. He’s not even close to that level of production.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he’s trash. He’s just not an elite WR and if somebody is paying him franchise WR money, I hope it’s not the Eagles.

by DK Jr. on Feb 5, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you on the money issue...

I just hope you can see where all this excitement is coming from for all of us. Maybe it’s not T.O., but it almost HAS to be an upgrade over the current wide receiving corps…doesn’t it?

It’d be nice to have someone even that close to ‘stud’ status as a receiver for McNabb. Agree with Housh as a number one or not, I think we can all agree on the importance of weapons…McNabb certainly does.

by phantom818 on Feb 5, 2009 2:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I see your point

But would rather see the Eagles focus on RB and/or OL in the offseason. With the emergence of Avant in the slot, I really think the Eagles are in good shape at WR. If they are going to make a big move in free agency, it needs to either be a Tackle or a Defensive End.

Simply adding another good WR doesn’t guarantee the offense gets better (a la Roy Williams with the Cowboys.)

by DK Jr. on Feb 5, 2009 3:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I like the skepticism.

There’s nothing to say that TJ would be another Roy Williams, but then again, there’s also nothing to say he won’t. I still think an addition like that helps this team immensely, but you also have a point with the RB/OT issue.

If I had to choose between a top tier WR and a top tier RB/OT, the answer would be pretty obvious. Like Jason, I too, would prefer a top TE as well. It’d be nice to see that West Coast back in action. Thomas and Runyan are clearly pretty old and free agency and/or hopefully the draft will be the best avenues to help remedy that problem. I don’t think the Eagles necessarily have to ‘go for broke’ at the RB position either.

So, while I’m with all the fans of the TJ “move/rumor,” a lineman would probably be one of the best things this team could do. I apologize if I sound like “captain obvious” as well here haha. Although I’ll take Housh if the price is right :)

by phantom818 on Feb 5, 2009 3:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

First off Chad is a big play threat. I think TJ is the better reciever, but Chad is one the premier Deep play threats in the game. I think we have enough of those to keep TJ as an effective underneath receiver.

Funny, I didn't mention Wayne or Boldin.

What I said was that Chad Johnson plays with the skill of a #1 WR, and TJ Houshmandzadeh does not. The fact that they are on the same team did not imply some generalization.

Some teams do have 2 WRs that produce at an elite level. Houshmandzadeh isn’t even close to the level of Boldin or Wayne, who have been far more productive and are both younger than TJ.

4th and 26!!!!

by kingofnorth on Feb 5, 2009 2:05 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don't want him

First of all, he would not produce like a #1 on our team. McNabb likes to spread the ball around, and with the further development of Jackson and Avant, and a full season of health from Curtis, he will not put up the numbers we will be paying him to produce.

Second of all, he is not the type of WR that we need. While he does produce in the Red Zone (which would help), as someone said earlier he has the lowest avg ypc in the league. Our offense is based around playmakers, players who run well after the catch, and that is not TJ. We would be much better served aquiring Boldin, Moreno or Winslow (who might be available for trade after we failed to get him at the deadline).

Finally, HE ISN"T WORTH THE MONEY! I know we are always under the cap, and trust me I am one of the biggest proponents of spending more money as it always seems we are that 1 player away…but this is not the answer. The money we would have to spend if he gets franchised or a long term deal is just plain stupid. Our front office is smarter than that. Spend the money on Gross.

I gotta disagree with this. Being effective in the red zone alone makes him valuable, and just because he doesn’t get a lot of YAC doesn’t mean he’s not a playmaker. You don’t need to get 30 yards a play. TJ is the perfect WR for a two minute drill, too. I don’t know about you, but I think that’d be something I’d be interested in.

is it me

or does this remind you of Pats wr core 2 years ago.

TJ = Moss, DJax = Stallworth, Curtis = Welker.

It's you

TJ Houshmandzadeh is not comparable to Randy Moss by a long shot.

have to agree with DK on this one

Moss is a future HOF, TJ has some, maybe loads of work to get there. But TJ is a #1 reciever

#5 over "kobb" anyday!

This could be amazing

we have a very solid receiving core they are all very good. Desean Jackson will be a pro bowl player in his career. Curtis is a big play threat and very fast. if you pair them with another pro bowl receiver like TJ imagine the possibilities. the last time we had a pro bowl receiver in TO we went to the Super bowl. If not TJ go for the other Bengals who also wants to play for the eagles. Any great reciver and we will be better off than this year even after the Eagles set a record in scoring. GO GANG GREEN

Bengals Fan Here

Hey guys just wanted to toss a fact or 2 your way and my opinion. The last thing I want to do is give another fan base more reasons for bothering their team about signing our beloved TJ. However I cannot help but to clear up a misconception or 2 about TJ. #1 He can get down the field quite well, his YPC isn’t a function of his inability as a WR but due to his ability instead. Basically all 3 of our WR’s can go get it down field but only TJ’s game is suited to play underneath and be productive consistently. Chad can play underneath as well but wouldn’t hold up as good physically if he were to do so. Sure TJ isn’t quite the downfield WR as Chad and Chris are, frankly few are. But he is more than capable of doing so himself. Sure he isn’t Moss and T.O. physically speaking although neither was Jerry Rice but his productivity relied on his ability to get seperation with precise routes, intelligence and great hands. TJ is more like Rice, a tougher version. Put it like this I have never seen anyone shut down TJ except for injury or Carson, and come to think of it Carson has never really chosen to shut TJ down, but at times just prefers to throw it to Chris or Chad. TJ is a great WR because he is a great WR like a Rice, Carter or Hines Ward etc. not just a great pass catcher like Chad, Moss, T.O. etc. Only he probably didn’t get off to as great a start as some.

Of course on the flip side he is 31 (32 around the start of the season). He has had some injury problems in his past, he used to have lots of problems with his hamstrings even to the point of it being almost career ending at one point. Although he has seemingly put that behind him. And I believe that he is definitely gonna be looking to get as much money as he possibly can as it will be his last contract of any significance. His other issues is that sometimes he can take himself out of the game if he gets mad, he can be provoked at times to lose his cool on the field, and it usually sticks with him awhile. Although he has gotten better with age in that regard. And he can at times early in the season not be on the same page with his offense/QB because he likes to stay in Cali (his home) throughout the entire offseason and work out on his own instead of coming to involuntary camps. But he is always there at the start of pre-season training camp.

The whole thing in a nutshell is that somebody is gonna get a very good player who if he is on the same page early on with his QB will be a legit #1. He’s gonna play hard, smart and productive. He’s gonna hold himself, his teammates, his coaches and even the fans and media accountable (very blunt and rarely shy). Not a lot of players of his age and especially his position I would give a big contract to but if there is any worthy of taking that risk on he probably is. In short if he were drafted by Philly he’d be a favorite son of the fans. On the field he is tough, intense, productive, intelligent & fearless and off the field well pretty much the same.

I hope he stays a Bengal because after Carson IMO he’s the next best player we have. And despite our ’08 record we are pretty likely to rebound and be improved on our ’07 season with him. Without him though we might as well start the re-build around Carson.

We’d love to have him.
