Broncos sign Dawkins to huge contract

Well, now we know why the Eagles didn't match... Adam Schefter is reporter that Brian Dawkins has signed a 5 year $17 million contract with $7.2 million guaranteed.

I must say... that changes the way I feel about this situation. The Eagles were never going to match for a 36 year old player, no matter how great he was.

Now, some of that is funny money. Reports are that he'll make $9 million over the first two years, which is the important part... but still a ton of money. Obviously the Broncos needed to wildly overpay to get him and they did that and got their man.

Best of luck Dawkins and congratulations on that contract.

…can you defend giving him this kind of money? I know we all love him, but they overpaid. Congrats to him and best of luck in Denver.

hosed?

Sorry, but the value is there from our point of view. Your team is used to being solid on defense. Our was the absolute worst last year. Dawkins will bring leadership and a heck of a lot of toughness to a team that is sore need of both.

When I saw the numbers I thought “fair”.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

He’ll be worth every penny to that team.

P.S.

Peter King reported that Dawkins made 7.2 million the past three years. This deal gives him that guaranteed over the next two.

I hate to see players of this caliber do this at the end of their careers. Good Luck B Dawk. Enjoy that paycheck.

Yeah, but I’ll be pissed again if he felt the Eagles lowballed him with a 1-year deal and a 2 year deal could have kept him here.

We do not and will not over pay for players

Loyalty can only go so far. At some point being too loyal ends up hurting the team. If we signed him to even 3/4 of that contract, it would’ve hurt the team.

Funny

that news changes everything. this is the best thing for everyone involved. Dawk, Broncos, Eagles, hell even for Buck. He’s got at least one bud on his new team now.

by ErickW on Feb 28, 2009 2:16 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Definitely

Which makes me disappointed at Dawk than mad at the front office. Its once thing if he went to a Super Bowl contender for more money, but the Broncos? Sorry, but they are not a contender. If he really wanted a ring he would have stayed he. But I guess money and years are more important.

As much as I love Dawk, I think this is going to turn out to be a huge mistake for him. The Broncos will go no where, and the Eagles will win the Super Bowl. And Dawk will be cut at the end of next season anyway- or be benched.

I appreciate it...

The Broncos signed John Lynch to a similar deal(4 years 16 mil) when they got him and I was concerned then. It worked out, so it was worth it. The safety play was just so god-awful last year the Bronocs had to do something. Plus, his leadership in the locker room and with Josh Barrett(young safety rough around the edges) might be just as important as his on-field production…

Yeah I mean that's my opinion

Others on this board would probably be happy to pay him that much. I think he got paid 7.2 million over the last three years. Considering he’s going to be 36 I couldn’t justify another 9 million over the next two years. Definitely going to help you in your locker room though.

by ajay on Feb 28, 2009 2:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Depends...

I wrote an article about the impact of this move that i’m going to publish in an hour or so when people get their chance to comment here. I talk a lot about what his role on the team had become.

Is he worth it? Probably not. But what free agents are truly "worth" the money they get?

I think the question of whether he can be productive for you guys depends entirely on how you use him. As a safety in coverage… I don’t think so. He just wasn’t able to do that anymore last year. He was most effective playing close to the line of scrimmage as a safety/LB hybrid. If he’s used in that role, I believe he can be productive for at least another year. He can get to the QB, he can force fumbles… but he’s just not a “center field” type safety anymore.

by JasonB on Feb 28, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think he'll play...

that John Lynch, Rodney Harrison role. Close to the line of scrimmage, almost another linebacker…

I do too. Honestly, they really don’t have a choice. That’s where he is most effective now. He really struggled early last year playing in coverage, but when he was moved up basically to LB down the stretch he was very productive.

Cap

$127 million per year for 53 players.

That’s an average of $2.4 million.

When you give a Dawkins $4.5 million per year, you are essentially saying that instead of a proven veteran at another position, you are content with an undrafted rookie free agent earning the league minimum. You know, a Reno Mahe or a Greg Lewis.

by Broncofan on Feb 28, 2009 2:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

they probably don't realize what they're getting

as much as i love dawk, this isn’t the dawkins of old. they likely think they’re getting a dominant top tier safety in the league, but as age catches up he’s just not that player any more. to me, they payed for a good player on the decline, but an amazing and almost a non-replaceable leader. if you haven’t followed him recently, on name recognition alone they’re thinking probably thinking he’s what he used to be.

by eagleyosh on Feb 28, 2009 2:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not sure if they’re even getting a safety anymore… They’re getting a guy that plays very close to the line of scrimmage and defends the run and rushes the passer. That’s usually called a LB.

That said, he was great in that role down the stretch.

by JasonB on Feb 28, 2009 2:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i realize that, but most are from denver and dont’ really see dawkins play every game…the point is he is on the decline, but based on name recognition alone, most people don’t realize that. denver played for a leader, and an awesome one, but they paid a lot for that.

by eagleyosh on Feb 28, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

its basically a 2 year deal it will not kill denvers cap....

by ajay on Feb 28, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

by fitzy first on Feb 28, 2009 2:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

9 million over 2 years is essentially what this deal is worth. Why would you not pay Dawkins that. The argument that he isn’t worth it is only valid if we operate under the assumption the Eagles will spend up to the cap… which all evidence indicates they will NOT do. So if thats the case, “overpaying” really doesn’t matter, why not keep an big part of your defense rather than let him go.

by quakerfan on Feb 28, 2009 2:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

because EO believes they have better options… this is no surprise given their history, seems ridiculous yes that we don’t keep him. did you have the same feelings when Trotter left? same old same old, Bdawk will be back with the Eagles in 2 years, either retired or for one more go…

by fitzy first on Feb 28, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Good question

They must have another plan in place. Either to promote Demps, move Brown to FS or bring in another player to replace Dawkins. That’s doable. You can find a better FS than him, sad to say.

by ajay on Feb 28, 2009 3:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

unless we bring in

Ed freakin Reed, Im sliiiiightly disillusioned with football right now. Yes, it was alot of money, but I am not the least bit confident with Demps as our starting FS.

Playing devil's advocate

I’m going to put up a post about this in detail and I don’t totally agree with what I’m about to say.. but this is the counter argument.

Youd be overpaying for a big part of your defense last year. The question is whether you think the $9 million will buy you a guy that will continue to be a big part of your D at 36 and 37 years old.

by JasonB on Feb 28, 2009 3:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

the sad truth is; #20 just wasn’t consistent enough or wasn’t on the field enough to be as effective. The game he had in Giants Stadium was one for the ages. And I kinda feel this was the end for him when he broke down and held back tears… Where was he in the Cardinals game? he was hurt or sore, I don’t know what, but Demps was out there instead and it wasnt pretty

For me it comes down to whether the money will be spent somewhere else or not. If it is spent somewhere else, then not overpaying for an aging player is the right decision. But knowing the Eagles, the money will not be spent, which makes me question the move. I would rather pay 4.5 million and have a guy like Dawkins on the roster than be 10-15 million under the cap.

Hello Philly! Broncos fan here.

First of all, I want to say that I have nothing but respect for your team and thier fans. I understand that this is a sore subject and I apologise if this question is taken as in bad taste. I understand completely if you decide to ignore it. Here goes, what amount of decline have you seen in Dawk/Buck? Living in Denver I have very little chance to see them play. Realistically how many more years do they have in them? We signed them to 5 year and 4 year deals, respectively. Was this too much? In what ways have they declined? Speed? Durability?

Thank you for your time in reading and responding to this post. I wish you all the well in this offseason and the coming season. Also, I am rooting for you in the Housh lottery. Good luck.

You're better than most of your cohorts who came on here...

…in my opinion Buck has some good years left in him. He’s been nothing but productive when given the opportunities and even though he’s 30 he missed 3 whole seasons. But he’s got reconstructed knees and is one injury away from being done in the NFL.

As for Dawkins, his coverage skills have really declined. He’s not the same FS he was even two years ago but he’s still great around the line of scrimmage.

bucky was a stud as a rookie and messed up one of his knees in the NFCCC against the Rams back in ’00… one of the reason we lost i think.

then he tore the other knee in a pre-season game, might have been the same one… can’t remember, had many setbacks until finally years down the road, i think he had two tears on one knee and one on the other… this might have been his most productive year per yards average and receiving, so after 8 years the man wants a chance to start and i think he’ll be a stud for Denver, maybe for 3 years if he doesnt get hurt again. This is new territory, When he was the featured back last season a couple times, his numbers were great. He played for a team that didn’t give him the ball, so Bucky turned that into a positive and made the most of it… meaning the dude has great character…

Dawkins- he’ll give you two good years… then i bet the Broncos release him, or try to get him an office job.

try to get him an office job
I would rather he get an office job for the Phillys. secondary coach?

Sad day for me

But it had to happen eventually. As much as I wanted him to stay I don’t know how happy I would have been if we paid what Denver did. I think we’ll miss him more in the leadership department than on the field.

He worked hard and held himself accountable. He gave us everything he had while he was here.

Thanks for the memories, Dawk.

Two things to realize

1) We said much the same things when jeremiah Trotter left, to a somewhat lesser degree. Obvisouly Trotter wasn’t at this level of fan-love, but he was heart/soul/locker room leader for the eagles.

2) Leadership is situational, and if Denver paid money for that, they may be a little disppointed. Dawk was leader here because he’d been through hell and back again, we each feel like we’ve been through the trenches with him. You just don’t walk out of situation 1 and into situation 2 and display the same leadership traits that were earned over years with a team. He is going to have to adjust to that locker room, and before he makes a huge impact, he may be most of the way through Yr 1 of the contract, with his skills declining more.

I’ll tell you, as aN FO, the Eagles sometimes have to make some tough decisions. But they get more right then wrong. Nobody, no team makes all the right decisions. So express your love for the man, remember the highlights, and wait for him to come back as a secondary coach in 3-4 years. Now, time to move on.

E-A-G-L-E-S! EAGLES!!!!! IN ’09

Plus, Denver people are mean. Not very Christian.

What?!

Sorry, but I take offense to that. Not cool at all.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

What's Offensive about it?

I lived in NE Philly for 23 years, I know mean. The people of Denver have been Cali-Fornicated, and in general are very mean, selfish, and self-serving. There’s a reason anyone not from Denver starts planning the days they move away from there.

That being said, I sincerely hope Dawk is able to make his $9 Mil over two years and is back in Philly in 3-4 years as a special assistant coach for the Eagles.

I'm gonna miss the man

The crazy entrances, emotional postgame speeches, the pregame peptalks… I’ll miss it all. Best of luck to Dawk. I love that man

Maybe next year

This may have already been said but....

A new HC has a proven leader on defense. It’s kinda like when Belichick got the NE job and then signed Bryan Cox. For that reason alone he’ll be worth every penny to Denver.

Interesting theory

I was of the opinion that he’d be a lot better for us next year than he would be for Denver.

I guess it really depends on how they use him, either situationally or with less responsibility in pass coverage.

I guess he can’t change his ways, as far as how hard he works and how intense he is on the field, but who knows if the new Broncos D will be suited to his skills or not.

I guess he’s not the guy to doubt though.

No doubt he would have been a lot better for us. I think I see what Denver’s doing as far as signing Dawk. I get why the FO didn’t match. What I don’t get is why Dawk chose Denver. They could win a SB but they probably won’t. Was the money really that good or were we just too hard headed to add a 2nd year to his contract?
