Dawk still a free agent

As of 6:23 MST February 28.

Per the Denver Post:

However, the Broncos can drop a cannonball that would shake the league from here to the Liberty Bell if they can finish off a deal for Brian Dawkins.

A seven-time Pro Bowl safety, Dawkins, 35, has played his entire 13-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dawkins flew to Denver on Friday night to visit with the Broncos. Would he end his career with the Broncos much like Broncos safety Steve Atwater finished off his career with the New York Jets?

Vic Lombardi, the CBS 4 Denver Sports News anchor last night said that Dawk would sleep on it.  Whatever, Brian is trying to do what is best for him and his family.  Per Vic, the entire Dawkins family came to Denver.  Dawk and the new Broncos attended last night's Nuggets win over the Lakers, but Brian has yet to speak with the media in Denver.

I'm going skiing.

Its comforting to hear he didnt sign

but the fact his whole family came with him and he seems to be deeply thinking about signing with them really bothers me i hope if anything he brings watever offer the Vroncos give him back to Philly and give the Eagles a chance to match it before he considers signing with Denver

To me the Eagles are like that girlfriend that pisses u off, then u hate her, but the next morning you wake up and remember that thing u love so much about her

Dawkins

The only reliable source is the NFL Network and the Eagles official website. Don’t believe anything, anyone else reports about Dawkins and any of the eagles players or intrests for that matter.

I wish Dawkins the best on whatever he ends up doing

Maybe next year

Good

Don’t do it Dawk!

Have some respect for us here in Philly!

by Andrew B on Feb 28, 2009 10:04 AM EST reply actions

What does it have to with respect

Why shouldn’t an athlete with only a couple of years left to play go for the best contract available to him or the playing situation that gives him what he wants? What respect does he owe us? It is we who should show him some respect, and thanks for the tremendous effort he gave us for 13 years. I hope he finds a way to make it work here, but if he doesn’t, I can’t fault him at all.

by MJW on Feb 28, 2009 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

Wow, a lot of abused fans here.

Why should he show us respect?

Because our tickets and TV watching and jersey buying gave him all that money.

He owes us respect for 13 years of loyal cheering. Has he ever been booed, even when he played terrible? No players in Philly on any team get the hands off treatment he gets. He’s worshipped as a god here.

“We” (the team) have found a way to make it work. We offered him a new contract with more money at a higher rate than he has ever earned.

Apparently, that isn’t good enough to him.

by Andrew B on Feb 28, 2009 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

Interesting perspective

So you buy a few tickets and a Jersey and you cheer for him and the guy owes you! This is a business and it’s his life. He was a team player every minute he was here and he always gave maximum effort. I don’t think he owes us anything. Some players choose to stay with their long time teams for less pay, and if that works for them, great. Dawk’s not some carpetbagger. He gave us everything he had for 13 years. If he thinks it’s better for him to move on, I think we should respect his decision.

by MJW on Feb 28, 2009 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

Owe?

Its not a matter of him owing us anything.

Its a matter of loyalty in a relationship.

I love the Eagles, and I love all of the Eagles players because they are on my team. Even Reno Mahe and Greg Lewis.

I expect all the Eagles players to love us fans and the team back and want to play here if they are offered the opportunity to resign because the Eagles are the best football franchise in the league (in my highly biased opinion) because they have the best and most loyal team fans cheering them on.

I don’t love players who play elsewhere, no matter how skilled they are.

I especially don’t love traitors who’ve left the team despite being offered a new contract (or who mouthed their way off the team, like T.O. or John Welbourn).

I’m pissed when good players no longer want to play for us if given the opportunity, or when free agents refuse to sign with us, or draft picks hold out on us and refuse to even join.

My team is the Philadelphia Eagles, not the Philadelphia Dawkins.

by Andrew B on Feb 28, 2009 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

Bring back the reserve clause

I suppose you’d like to do away with free agency altogether. Fact is to us it’s a game. To the front office it’s a business. And to the players I guess it’s some of both. But to call a guy a traitor because he wants to go where he can get a longer deal or a better playing situation or more money is just harsh. And you can’t compare Dawkins to TO. I have no respect for TO because of his behavior, but I also don’t think he owed us anything. Dawk has behaved honorably and rationally throughout his career. Have you ever passed up a job opportunity that would be beneficial for you and your family because you felt loyal to a prior employer?

by MJW on Feb 28, 2009 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

Nope

I don’t want to get rid of free agency.

But sometimes, a player needs to realize that eternal memory is worth more than adding a few more millions to a pile that is already 20 times what a normal person will earn in their lifetime.

Andrew B u really are an idiot..i’ve read a few of your comments and you dont have a clue what respect is. I’m not gonna get into a shouting match with you, but for our sake and the sake that maybe some of the Eagles players read these posts…SHUT UP..they might start to think that we are all a-holes like you. Dont respond to this and make yourself look any dumber and stop trashing Dawk, i’ve never seen him play “terrrible”. IDIOT!!!

by BDawkins20 on Feb 28, 2009 10:53 AM EST reply actions

dude, you’ve been here one day… those of us that have been here for years can tell you that Andrew is far from an idiot or anything else you mentioned

One day was all it took

weird how it took less than 24 hours for me to make this assumption.

Hey

I’m not the one degenerating into ad hominem attacks of fellow fans to defend a player who is betraying the fans and team.

Usually, going to the ad hominem is a sign you’ve lost the argument (along with refererring to or comparing your verbal sparring partner to the Nazis).

by Andrew B on Feb 28, 2009 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

What argument?

give me a valid point to argue. You say he owes us? he’s playe “terrible”? U dont speak for us fans that have lived and died with BDawk. He’s given everything he’s got, and yet he owes. But i’m a nazi? You speak with such disrespect for Dawk that it makes me sick to my stomach to know that there are Eagles fans out there that think like you. You were probably one of those calling for us to draft R. Williams and booed when we drafted DMac. and probably called for his head in the Baltimore game..probably wanted Reid fired after that same game. Dont tell me or anyone else that he owes us some respect.

You said you weren't responding

I’m certainly not responding to what you write.

by Andrew B on Feb 28, 2009 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

haha

check the threads from during the season. andrew i believe called us all a bunch of bandwagon cry baby losers (and those were the nicer adjectives) for being unhappy with reid and mcnabb.

Y'all were quitting ...

In the middle of the season after the Bengals and Ravens games.

“Oh we’ll never make the playoffs now, blah, blah, blah.”

“Trade McNabb, fire Reid, blah, blah, blah.”

“This teams philosophy doesn’t work anymore, we can’t win anymore, blah, blah, blah.”

700 Level and I were supremely confident and positive that we were in a good spot still and were heading deep in the playoffs?

Who was right?

by Andrew B on Feb 28, 2009 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

Andrew knows way more about eagles (stats, players), football (the formations and such) and the business side (salary cap, etc) than pretty much anyone else on here….and that’s saying something since there are a lot of really knowledgeable people on here

by eagleyosh on Feb 28, 2009 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

That's flattering.

I’m sure a lot of people here know more than me on some stuff though.

Stats BLAH BLAH BLAH

i dont care if can look up stats online, he crossed the line when he talks like that about Dawk.

wow… classy comment. nothing in my response to you was negative… i was simply informing you… no need to go down this road…

STTTTTOOOOOOPPPPPP!!!!

This is not about Andrew or anyone else.

Lets talk about the sad prospect of losing a player who is the heart and soul of our defense!!

i would rather see him retire than feel that the Eagles with a ton of $ to spend could not simply give him the two year contract he wanted.

I am also baffled that he would go from the Eagles to a team that does not look to have a shot of being a contendor.

Who signs?....

I think Andrew-s biggest problem is that it hurts to see, that BDawk signs a contract with another team. It’s he who signs it, not Reid, not the front office, not Willy Penn, it’s Brian Dawkins who signs a deal about leaving the Eagles. That’s what hurts! Ok, it’s business, I don’t think it’s anything about traiting, but it hurts. I don’t think Andrew or anyone else is idiot, because he feels the same way. It’s my oppinion, U have yours, but I’m sure the hurt is common…

by samson9 on Feb 28, 2009 1:01 PM EST reply actions

Damn straight

It does hurt.

And I am not going to be “happy for Brian” that he is raping the Broncos for the money he got by spurning us.

Dawk’s a traitor to the Eagles and Eagles fans now. Ca$h money and mega dollar$ over team, fans, and city.

Now we know how hollow all his talk was about his love for the fans, this city, and this team.

HE CUT US LOOSE.

by Andrew B on Feb 28, 2009 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

Your coward comments are raping his memory

wow…all i can say is wow.. read your comments. you arent a dawkins fan. your a jealous jerk that cant be happy for him. he’s raping the broncos? so in other words whatever he would’ve gotten from the eagles, he would be raping them? i cant understand why some of these pple put their faith in your shallow words. You speak for the small community of pr*cks that gave all the fans a bad name by throwing snowballs at a game. Understand that whatever u say about dawk is only gonna make u look like a bigger ass. i was gonna just leave this alone, but i cant sit hear and let u rip dawk like this now that he’s gone. I for one am ashamed of this organization for letting him go, but much more i’m ashamed of being a fan because of pple like you that lash out at one of best players and all around good person like dawk. i hope pple read this post and re-read what you’ve said about dawk raping another organization and owing us some respect. I cant stand you and hope this hits you in a way that you’ll understand. 99.9% of us disagree with everything you’ve said about dawk and resent you and your dishonest words towards him. i guess he should’ve taken the measly 1 year deal that philly offered..1 f-ing year? and you blame dawk?

This is on the eagles website now...

http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/news/RumorMill.asp

It’s just a link to the Derrick Gunn report, but it’s probably damning that it’s on the Eagles’ site.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.
