San Francisco Chronicle reports Dawkins signs with Broncos

So says a league source.

Get used to dealing with hard-hitting safety Brian Dawkins twice a year: he just agreed to a deal with the Broncos, a league source said, bringing some muscle to the mostly athletic AFC West.

The perrenial Pro Bowler is 35 but should have another year or two in the tank. He's the sort of tough and on-target safety the Raiders have been missing for years. As it turns out, they won't have a chance of signing him now.

If this true, the Eagles have some explaining to do.

[Note by JasonB, 02/27/09 5:34 PM EST ] Moments live on NFL Network Adam Schefter confirmed that the Broncos signed both S Renaldo Hill and WR Jabar Gaffney, but said they are still talking to Dawkins, as are the Eagles. He did not confirm this report.

[Note by JasonB, 02/27/09 5:46 PM EST ] Howard Eskin just reported that Dawkins' agent has confirmed that he has not signed yet. He couldn't confirm that it wouldn't happen, just that it has not yet.

[Note by JasonB, 02/27/09 6:25 PM EST ]  CBS4 in Denver are refuting the report

Despite a report in the San Francisco Chronicle that the Broncos have reached an agreement with Dawkins, there are no indications that any sort of deal has been done.

The NFL Network reports that Dawkins will talk to the Broncos, but still plans to speak with his current team in Philadelphia.

[Note by JasonB, 02/27/09 7:04 PM EST ] From rotoworld

According to ESPN.com's Bill Williamson, a source close to the situation denies that a Brian Dawkins press conference has been scheduled for Saturday in Denver. Media outlets are picking up on the San Francisco Chronicle's original report -- and Dawkins may still sign with the Broncos -- but the deal isn't done yet.

[Note by JasonB, 02/27/09 7:41 PM EST ] Now the refuting reports are pouring in. Now from Adam Schefter by way of PFT

Contrary to reports linking free-agent Eagles safety Brian Dawkins to the Denver Broncos, Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the deal "definitely" isn't done. "He's in the air, on plane, not even in Denver yet," Schefter says.

So after all that he wasn't even in Denver?

i dont mean to sound like an uneducated fan, but the front office really NEEDS to make a big splash this off-season now. resigning dawkins would not have cost us all that much more in cap space so we better do something with all this salary cap space now.

As tears stream down my face

I will reserve judgment until I see our Defense this season. They were right about Troy Vincent, Bobby Taylor and Jeremiah Trotter. It doesn’t make it any less sad, but this day had to come eventually….

by DownHillBradley on Feb 27, 2009 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

+1

I agree, Dawkins is by far my favorite player as well, but to go back beyond the Trotter thing, this is the same reaction that everyone had about letting Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent go (both in the same year) when Vincent was the emotional leader of the D and both were recent pro bowlers. They were both replaced by pro bowlers in their second year in the league and Dawkins took over as the leader. Now Dawkins will be replaced by a second year player that the FO has faith in (Demps) and I am sure someone else will step up as the new leader… Brown, Cole, Bunkley, Patterson… sucks, but the FO has earned the right for us to wait and see how it ends up.

don't want you guys to get the wrong impression of Broncos fans

and of course there is still hope that Dawk stays in Philly, but if Dawkins does go to the Broncos, know that it is a fan base that can really care about him, too. That would be TWO huge fanbases that give total props to Dawkins as an all-time great, and that won’t be bad for him at all.

For myself, Dawkins is easily one of the best all-time players I have ever had a chance to see. I love Atwater, Lynch was gentleman, but Brain Dawkins is the Greatest. Safety. Ever. I would love to see him give our defense some respectability.

The downside is retiring as an Eagle, and regardless of what goes down, I really hope that is in the cards for Brian.

Just wanted you guys to know that the majortiy of Broncos fans can appreciate just how great of a sigining it is, and understand what kind of a loss it would be for you guys.

Well, this probably won't help but:

It is better to part ways with a legend a few days too early then a few days too late.

You can always do what the 49ers did with Rice….sign him for a day so he can retire as he should have…as a Niner.

CBS4 in Denver

Despite a report in the San Francisco Chronicle that the Broncos have reached an agreement with Dawkins, there are no indications that any sort of deal has been done.

The NFL Network reports that Dawkins will talk to the Broncos, but still plans to speak with his current team in Philadelphia.

If it was true, would it take 5+ hours for this report to be confirmed? I think its reasonably safe to assume that Dawkins got an offer, and has taken it back to the Eagles. Everything now rests in whether the Eagles match. Let’s hope…..

Quaker … that sounds like a plan.

You do have to think that a career Eagle would give them a chance to match … and from the way the front office speaks about him, I think he’s one of the 3 guys (along with mcNabb and Westbrook) that they’d never let go.

Then again, these guys always let go too soon than hang on too long. It hasn’t backfired on them once yet.

DAWKINS NOT DONE IN DENVER

Contrary to reports linking free-agent Eagles safety Brian Dawkins to the Denver Broncos, Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the deal “definitely” isn’t done.

“He’s in the air, on plane, not even in Denver yet,” Schefter says.

Earlier in the day, David White of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that an agreement was reached.

6:46 p.m. — Browns’-Eagles’ safety dance
Free agent S James Sanders (New England Patriots) has received plenty of interest on Friday, Scout.com has confirmed. In particular, the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles have showed the most interest because of openings.

Cleveland has an opening with SS Sean Jones unsigned.

Philadelphia has an opening at FS with Brian Dawkins headed for Denver.

Buckhalter, Arrington to Denver, Dawkins not done
Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Brian Dawkins, Correll Buckhalter, Denver Broncos, J.J. Arrington

Free agent safety Brian Dawkins does not have a deal with the Broncos right now, contrary to reports. He is in the air and on the way to Denver right now. The Broncos do, however, have agreements with running backs Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington.

From PFT
Contrary to reports linking free-agent Eagles safety Brian Dawkins to the Denver Broncos, Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the deal “definitely” isn’t done.

“He’s in the air, on plane, not even in Denver yet,” Schefter says.

by JasonB on Feb 27, 2009 7:44 PM EST reply actions

there really is hope

just got off the phone with David White, the San Francisco Chronicle reporter who posted a couple hours ago, saying Brian Dawkins had agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos.

Here’s the deal: White is not reporting that Dawkins has signed a contract with the Broncos. He actually never reported that. White is told by a source that Dawkins has “agreed to terms” on a deal. Many of us took this to mean a deal had been finalized, but there is obviously a major difference if you look at the wording closely.

As of right now, no one (that I’ve found) has reported that Dawkins has signed a deal. And White is still the only reporter I’ve found that says Dawkins has agreed to terms. The bottom line is that it appears nothing has been finalized, although White sticks by his source that a deal is in place.

White said I’m the only person from Philadelphia who hasn’t cursed at him today, and I appreciate him taking the time to get in touch with me after I sent him an initial e-mail.

He ends his most recent blog post with:

And please, Brian Dawkins, sign the deal with the Broncos and don’t go Bart Scott on me.

So, to clarify White’s report one last time: Dawkins has agreed to terms, but he still has the option to change his mind.

I just dont the think the FO realizes how much the fans idolize this guy… it wouldnt even matter if he only played special teams. He’s been the true face of the franchise for a long time. A true class act in the NFL

but i dont get it… He wants a ring right? Theres no way his chances are better in denver!

This doesn't sit well with me

nothing about this whole situation does why would he leave? The eagles are more of a contender than the broncos, maybe its for the easy teams he will play twice a year, but REALLY, REALLY? As for the people saying the FO made a sound move and we should trust them and emotions should not overrule business sense. How the fuck could this have hurt us, REALLY? he was a pro bowl player, a player fans idolize and the leader of the team. If this is true it will be worse than seeing brett favre in a different shade of green last year. The FO should bend over backwards for him, call him and say we are sorry it took so long we extend a contract for however long you want and its a blank check fill in what you feel is fair. Keep him in Philly otherwise baby angels will die and the world will come to an end. REALLY you let it get this bad FO REALLY? REALLY???
