It's The Final Countdown!

Philadelphia-eagles-logo_medium

Free agency begins in just over three and a half hours.  There have been rumors swirling around this team for the better part of a month now.  We've heard about possible trades and hints of free agents that the team may be interested in.  So, I guess the ultimate question that we're all asking ourselves is, "What's actually going to happen?"  And although no one can really predict that, not even the Eagles' front office, we can probably make some generalizations that could hold true.

First, we know that we have a ton of cap room, and we're going to have to use a good portion of it.  We also know that when the front office sees someone that they are interested in, they will go after them pretty hard (see Kearse, Owens, Samuel, and the pursuit of Randy Moss).  Additionally, we all know that when the front office has a plan of actiion, they're going to try to stick to it, no matter what the media and fanbase thinks.

Star-divide

I have a few thoughts that I think could hold true.  First, I think the Eagles have one specific FA that they consider a must have, and they will move on him hard and quick.  There's a good possibility that they overpay to get him, but that's okay considering our cap space.  After that, there are probably a few (perhaps two) players that could be immediate players in our system, but there is probably a bidding point where the Eagles will draw the line.  Finally, there may be one or two players that are simply added for depth.

If I had to take a guess at who these players are, I say there's a fairly good possibility we sign Jason Brown tomorrow (and overpay a bit to do so).  After that, there will be a two day window where we pick up a player or two for immediate impact (Weaver at fullback is a good fit and I think an outside shot at Ward at RB), and finally we'll position ourselves to add depth over the next week or two.  Those names I'm not so confident in, but be on the look out for a linebacker and maybe a safety (depending on what happens with Considine).

Now, I don't know if any of this will hold true, but I think it's a fair assessment.  I can't wait to see what pans out though!

DONT TAKE HOUSHH TRADE FOR BOLDIN

by eagles4321 on Feb 26, 2009 8:57 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Id be down for boldin over TJ but..

to build a successful team, you need to do it through the draft. There is a lot of talent this year. Both first round picks could be great. We’d have to give up a 1st and 3rd (from what im hearing) to get boldin. Im not comfortable having a 1st, 2nd, then 4th, and 5th ect. We have important players that are getting very old. Replacing them with youthful stars is a big priority this offseason.

Other dumb predictions:

Housh – Panthers
Haynesworth – Redskins
DeAngelo Hall – Lions

the only one possible might be Hall to the lions. The panthers have like 2 million in cap space so it would be no problem to outbid them for TJ. And if big AL is going to be asking for 12-15 million a year, theres no way the Redskins could do it with only 8 million in cap space. The three big teams this year with the most under the cap are the Bucs with a whopping $61 million under the cap, the Cheifs with $57 million, and our beloved Eagles with $48 million.

Cant believe you didnt even mention Houshmandzadeh

The players you mentioned would leave us in the same place we were last year. I would consider brown as an equivalent to runyan. They are both very good. Buck is just as good as ward. The only thing mentioned there that would make us better than last year is an actual fullback. I think Jackson, Curtis, and Avant are all pretty good in their own right and im not saying TJ is going to come here and be randy moss, but he will bring a lot more to the table. Houshmandzadeh, Jackson, and Curtis looks a lot scarier. Combine that with a good TE in the draft, (Pettigrew please god!) your offense is twice as good as last year. If we cant pick up ward, there are many good backs in the draft this year and a few in FA if your looking for depth.

yeah i didn’t mention Housh because I honestly think that if they’re gong after a WR, it’ll be Boldin or nothing. i hate to tell you, but this FA class is horrid. if we were to sign those three people i mentioned, that’d probably be a pretty good haul. you can’t sign big players that aren’t available

IgglesBlog...

…is talking up a trade for Braylon Edwards (as in, Derek wants one – not that the Eagles are looking into it) and my prediction is it happens. What is this based on? Desire.

I don't like Housh

too old and not worth what we’d have to give up.

OK, OK, OK. My real predictions.

Housh will be an Eagle. 4 years, $32 million. $14 million guaranteed. Leonard Weaver becomes an Eagle, too. I’m sure Andy Reid is salivating at the opportunity to sign a proven, pass-catching fullback.
