Breaking: Eagles tender Baskett, Cole, & Daniels
The Eagles have announced that they've made tender offers to three restricted free agents Hank Baskett, Nick Cole, & Tank Daniels.
Cole and Baskett are free to negotiate with other teams, but if they sign and offer sheet the Eagles will have seven days to match. If they choose not to match they will receive a second round pick in return. In other words, Cole and Baskett will be back.
Tank Daniels is an "exclusive rights" free agent and can not negotiate with other teams.

I think we can all say that we expected this… although it does signal the beginning a bit… a little over 8 more hours left

If we don’t sign both Dawk and Thomas, I am very worried for next year.
The team and fans will be let down without Dawk esecially when he has expressed desire to return.
Thomas is a must because we can not lose both starting tackles in one year!!!
Lets go FO. Get it done!!!

I don't know if Thomas is happening, I think we sign Dawk and bring in a Guard through FA,
Maybe Andrews and Herremans both start Tackle next year.

Don't worry about Dawk, we didn't sign Runyan a few backs till last minute
Dawkins isn’t gonna get an offer day 1. If he goes, we just sign Gibril Wilson or something.

I didn't expect them to tender Baskett, I guess we are not upgrading the WR possition.
I am a little annoyed, we alway talk about how close we are. Yet we continue to enter into the season with the same team and expect different results. We lost some games last year do to lack of fire power on offense. I know DJax was nice, but lets face it, we hit a 3 or 4 game streak were even he didn’t do much. The offense dragged last year, Donovan is in his his right to ask for help. We all want to just compliment the crew for not being bad. But no one can say they are a premeir crew! We always seem to have a bunch of Jessie Smalls and players of the like on our roster. Why cant we just upgrade? May the team better somewhere, I don’t care. If we are not getting TJ, then I hope we draft a RB. Don’t try to sell me BWest and a third rounder again, third round running bare make it any more, unless you like Tim Hightower and the likes of him (I pesonally hate Tim Hightower), we got lucky with BWest in the third, but got burned with Hunt and Moates.
If we bring back Basket, what roster space is left for anyone else? Lets face it guys, we are coming back with the same crew. Andy if you want to win, you gotta make moves to improve on what you have. You have a conference championship team, but NOT as SUPERBOWL team. Stop being content with coming in 2nd and 3rd place…

i think we all kinda figured that Baskett would be back… i mean we’re paying him pennies. if we do make a move, Lewis is pretty cuttable. Still easy to open a spot for an additional player

I guess your right, he is a RFA, and can't really go anywhere. Why not just resign him for that matter.
In that case, I like the move then.

there’s one other thing to consider man. although i don’t know the details of the tender right now, i can’t imagine that it’s too big of a cap hit. if worse came to worse and we signed another WR and we wanted to keep Greg Lews, there’s nothing stopping us from turning around and cutting Baskett at that point either… he’s basically a cheap insurance policy right now.

thats the thing ...
they tendered him because now if another teams wants him they get a 2nd round draft pick. That’s the smart move … why just let him go somewhere for nothing. This way we either get a pick or keep him if we upgrade at WR chances are Lewis is the one who gets cut.

I suppose so, I guess that will depend on how much they prorate in bonuses.
I was more concerned with the roster space.

I believe the tender is worth $1.5 million

I came here to make this point. Baskett has 3 years with the team, and I have been waiting for him to break out. At times, he flashes potential, but you have to wonder if this is just as good as he can be.
I was expecting them to build on top of Curtis, Jackson and Avant. Avant, like Baskett, has 3 years with the team under his belt. The difference is Jason has improved each season.
I suppose the jury is still out on Hank and he still can improve. They must dump Lewis though and replace him with a player who actually has an upside.

Baskett is just a well liked Lewis. They basically do the same thing, one big catch every once in awhile to make people wonder if they are going to be good. We have just gotten over Lewis it’s only a matter of time before people get fed up with Baskett.

true, but I don't mind him being our 4 or five receiver.
He derves to be a 4 on a team, maybe even a 3 receiver.

Hmm
Hank’s coming off his best season. I think it’s smart to tender him and see what happens in the long-run. The fade pattern worked a few times. I saw him muscle away the ball from defenders on a few occasions. The upside is there. And he’s a hell of a blocker. I still hold out some hope.

I agree. Baskett has shown flashes, but never has really put it all together and become the kind of player we hoped he would. Still he’s useful and there’s no reason not to make him a tender offer. Next year when he’s an unrestricted free agent is when the Eagles will really have to decide whether he’s worth committing to.

Honestly...
I don’t think that Hank has been used correctly. It’s a very rare thing when you see his number called…and when you do, he produces some of the longest touchdowns in the Birds History…I think they should give this kid a shot more often in the RZ and see what happens….can’t get any worse

I’d also take into consideration the insanely blown coverage on those plays

Got this off of FoxSports.com
how acurate do you guys think this is? Peter Schrager reportin…
Defensive Back
The Big Money Guy — Brian Dawkins: From everything I’ve heard, it’s almost a certainty that Dawkins will be returning back to the Eagles for ‘09 and perhaps ’10. But there’s been no deal inked yet, and at 35 years old, Dawkins is still one of the best all-around safeties in the league. The anchor of the league’s third-ranked defense in ’08, Dawkins forced six fumbles and had three sacks last year.
We need a heart to live.... Resign Dawkins, the heart of the Philadelphia Eagles!

so let me get this right.........
they are actually going to keep reggie brown on the roster? 2nd round pick playing in the #4 spot? well, shit. while were at it, let’s throw l.j smith some more money. he definately left it all on the field for us.
by snowhill82 on Feb 26, 2009 6:53 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Well, he is under a cap friendly contract. As people have pointed out with the Baskett tender, there really is no reason not to keep Brown at this point. He knows the offense well, and while he certainly has not matured into the star we all hoped he would, he is still a pretty solid player. Besides, we can always just try to trade him or release him if it becomes necessary.
by captain nodar on Feb 26, 2009 7:09 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
bud, if they cut reggie brown, we would get crushed with his accelerated cap hit. his contract is a friggin boat anchor… he’s stuck here for one more season… it’ll still hurt to cut him next year, but not as bad. it is impossible right now to trade Reggie Brown or cut him without getting our balls kicked in on the backend

Well, as of now there is no cap next year…. so no accelerated cap hit.

yeah you’re right… i thnk we’d still owe him some money to cut him though
