Top 7 Eagles targets dwindling

Almost a month ago I posted my list of the top 7 free agents the Eagles should target. It may be time to start a new list... Of my original 7, not many are left.

Brian Dawkins

Owen Daniels - Tendered at the highest level

Darren Sproles - Franchise tag

TJ Houshmandzadeh

Jordan Gross - Signed

Leonard Weaver

Tra Thomas/Jon Runyan - Runyan just had major knee surgery that could keep him off a field for the next 6 months.

Any suggestions for replacement names on the list?

Wouldn't have sproles in my top 7...

I would rather Derrick Ward than Sproles…or actually a draft pick too…he would have commanded a lot based on what he did for 1 half of 1 season…

Well...

…I’m still on the DE train. We’ve really only got one full-time starter (Cole), a bunch of rotational guys (Howard, Clemons, Parker) and some young unknowns (Abiamiri, Smith). I still think we could get better there. So maybe Julius Peppers?

What’s his deal? I keep hearing they might franchise him but it’d cost 17 million dollars. How is that possible? How is $17 million the average of the top 5 salaries? I don’t get it.

Anyways, I’d put him on the list.

peppers is franchised and only wants to go to 4 teams

by 0sirys on Feb 19, 2009 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

the franchise tag requires the team to pay the average top 5 salaries or 120% of the players previous year salary, whichever is higher. Peppers made 14 mil last year. I didn’t understand that either, until a few weeks ago.

cedric benson might be a good change of pace back if he can stay out of trouble or Dward

Potential Replacement for Gross

Vernon Carey from Miami probably won’t be franchised, he’s been a solid performer at both LT and RT, and isn’t redonkulously overrated like Gross.

by JBShakes on Feb 19, 2009 3:02 PM EST reply actions

I’d be okay with Carey, any new blood ( or anyone not named Winston Justice) would be great for the O line

and yes I realize Carey is 27, but at least its younger than 35

by NFC-BEAST on Feb 19, 2009 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Jesus, Gross gets 6 years. That’s a “statement” contract.

by Walcott on Feb 19, 2009 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

That’s a contract where the player had ALL the bargaining power…

RBs to complement Westbrook:

I know everybody seems married to the idea of drafting a RB early, but the bottom line is that unless Wells or Moreno are ready to pass block at the pro level, they won’t see the field much in this offense. I’d be willing to take a flyer on Rashad Jennings (6’1", 234) out of Liberty late on Day 1 or early on Day 2, but what about Fred Taylor, Deuce McAllister, or even Earnest Graham from TB, who may either get cut or be available at a reasonable price via trade?

by JBShakes on Feb 19, 2009 3:08 PM EST reply actions

Oh, and...

Cross one more off of your list at the top – Weaver just got franchised by the Seahawks.

by JBShakes on Feb 19, 2009 3:09 PM EST reply actions

How?

The Hawks used it on Leroy Hill earlier today…

by NFC-BEAST on Feb 19, 2009 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

Oops!

My bad – it was Hill, not Weaver. Leonard, LeRoy, whatever.

by JBShakes on Feb 19, 2009 3:17 PM EST reply actions

Figured as much, no worries. Upon review of whats left of free agents, IMO Weaver should be as much of a target for the Eagles as potentially acquiring Housh , yeah I said it. I would far far rather have a legitimate fullback (Kyle Eckel does NOT count) to give our backs a lead blocker out of the backfield. Every year we complain about not having a #1 WR, but we still got to the NFC championship, with f***in Jason Avant!! Westrbook, Buck, any future RB would be so much better if they had a lil help back there.
ps dont get me wrong I like Jason Avant, works great on 3rd downs as he showed everybody

Excellent point.

The FB position needs to be addressed and I think the Eagles will come through here. Plus, I have not given up on “Downtown” Reggie Brown—I think he can breakout into an elite WR!

by cybourgeoisie on Feb 19, 2009 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

i think reggie may have the talent but i am not sure he has the drive.

by 0sirys on Feb 19, 2009 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

One last idea-

Unless anybody’s 100% sold on the Jordan/Gaither combo at WILL, I think there’s value in taking a look at Jon Vilma, since the Saints aren’t really in any position to sign anybody right now.

what about winslow jr?

i would have him up there …. top two grabs besides our players should be him and tj … not sure what winslows situation is so dont start spewing hes all ready tagged assholes lol i have no idea … just think we could use another solider http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I82BPA5QAaQ

on the fence

K2 is not a free agent but there have been talks about the Browns willingness to trade. The only issue I have about making a move to get him is his durability, which after dealing with LJ Smith for how long, is the last thing we want to worry about.

by NFC-BEAST on Feb 19, 2009 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

And I don’t how much he’d cost in terms of picks. I’d be very interested if the price was right.

trade

boldin….. he says he wants out but will resign but it dont look good for him so a trade would be best

by Steele203 on Feb 20, 2009 9:51 AM EST reply actions

lets get some of these damn wide receiver free agents!

I don’t think there’s any WR left that could be solid #1 receivers, but guys like Bobby Engram could be a solid third down guy for us! Even splurge and get Marvin Harrison for 1-2 years so he can help mentor some of our young guys like Desaun Jackson. DJ Hacket could be a decent addittion too! Hell pick up Joe Jurovicious for a bargain price. We need a taller red zone kind of Wide out!
