Philadelphia Eagles Draft Needs

After losing their fourth NFC Championship game in eight years, it’s obvious the Eagles need some help. Since they can’t draft an entire new front-office in April, I guess I’ll have to look at some players who might be able to help them get back to the Big Game. Of course, talking about draft needs for the Eagles can be a futile discussion since they often ignore “need” and do whatever the hell they want. I give you the name Kevin Kolb. At any rate, here are areas the Birds should be looking to improve.

Positions: OT, RB, TE, FB, DT, WR

A lot of what the Eagles do on draft day will depend on what is done in free agency. With both Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas potentially heading elsewhere, offensive tackle is the most critical position of need. Winston Justice (a 2nd round pick in 2006) was supposed to be a future starting tackle but he has been a complete bust. That means back to the ‘ol drawing board. They hold two first round picks, so if they stand pat at 21 and 28, expect one of these selections to be a tackle. Players of interest: Eben Britton, Arizona; William Beatty, Connecticut. A trade-up to acquire one of the elite tackles like Michael Oher is also possible.

Brian Westbrook had an injury riddled 2008 and will be 30 before next season. A bigger, more physical back to complement B-West is a must. Now, Andy Reid has never selected a running back in the first round and I doubt this year will be any different. I love Chris Wells, but the Birds would have to move up to get him and that will not happen. They could stay at 21 and still get a decent back, although waiting until round 2 or 3 is the more likely scenario. Players of interest: Knowshon Moreno, Georgia; LeSean McCoy, Pittsburgh; Andre Brown, N.C. State; Marlon Lucky, Nebraska. Both Brown and Lucky are quality receivers, which makes them appealing.

L.J. Smith is on his way out of Philadelphia. For multiple reasons, L.J. never materialized into a star tight end. Nagging injuries and questionable hands ruined his time in Philly. Brent Celek came alive in the post-season and will be given every opportunity to seize the starting job. However, an elite pass catching tight end would greatly benefit Donovan McNabb and an offense that struggles in the red zone. Players of interest: Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State; Jared Cook, South Carolina. Pettigrew is flying up draft boards. If he’s available at 21, it would constitute a major steal.

I’m not certain the Eagles will spend a pick on a fullback, but they have to seriously consider it. Dan Klecko is a converted defensive tackle and would be better suited shifting back to defense. Kyle Eckel, a mid-season acquisition, is in the mix, but a young, punishing lead blocker would do wonders for a suspect rush offense. Players of interest: Brannan Southerland, Georgia; Chris Pressley, Wisconsin. Southerland blocked for Knowshon Moreno. Pressley blocked for P.J. Hill.

The Eagles are pretty stacked at defensive tackle. Starters Bunkley and Patterson are solid. Trevor Laws looks like a keeper. However, none of these guys have shown an ability to collapse the pocket and sack the quarterback. A disruptive tackle that can get into the backfield is needed. Players of interest: Evander Hood, Missouri; Vance Walker, Georgia Tech. Both Hood and Walker lack ideal size, but each is capable of attacking quarterbacks.

DeSean Jackson was a find in the 2008 draft. He is a skilled playmaker with tremendous upside. Wow, I sounded like a “draft expert” there. Take that Mel Kiper! Anyway, it appears after missing on several forgettable wide receivers like Na Brown, Todd Pinkston, Freddie Mitchell and Reggie Brown, Reid finally found a potential star in Jackson. That being said, a tall red zone threat is a must. If they don’t land an elite tight end, they need to turn their attention to receiver. Players of interest: Kenny Britt, Rutgers; Brandon LaFell, LSU; Brian Robiskie, Ohio State. Britt could be an absolute steal in the second or third round. LaFell has size and speed. Robiskie is not fast, but is physical with a great pair of hands.

Predicting what the Eagles might do on draft day is always a chore. For the most part, the brass does their homework and runs the draft very efficiently. Of the 22 starters that finished the 2008 season, 17 were either drafted or signed as undrafted free agents. That’s a pretty good success rate. Let’s hope they continue that success in 2009.

I would like the Eagles to draft a Tackle that slips or a guard (guards with first round grade are as close to a sure thing as there is in the draft) and grab Hakeem Nicks in the first or second round. Nicks is a great route runner and has solid hands. Jackson should be our number 1 guy, Nicks should grow into our number 2, and Curtis is great in the slot.

I hope more than anything else the Eagles give Jordan Gross a monstrous contract. That would solve a lot of problems. That’s really where our money should go this season.

I do think we should draft a running back as well. We can get a great run between the tackles back in Shonn Greene who should be available in the 2nd round. Beanie Wells is great, but injury prone, and I like Green in 3 and 1 situations more than Moreno (who is going to be a star, but doesn’t fit our needs) in general.

I wouldn't go guard at all in the draft.

With Shawn Andrews, Nick Cole, Max Jean-Gilles, Mike McGlynn, and possibly Todd Herremans (if he is not moved to tackle) on the roster the Eagles really don’t need a guard. Tackle is the obvious priority on the line, though I would not have a huge problem if the Eagles took Alex Mack, provided they use both 1st round draft choices.

If they drafted Mack, they could bring him along slowly by keeping Jamaal Jackson on the roster and have him start the majority of the season. They could keep Cole and Andrews at the guards and see if McGlynn can develop. I’d also be interested to see what Jean-Gilles can do and how he comes back from injury.

They could resign Tra Thomas and see if King Dunlap can develop into anything. They have the option to move Herremans out to tackle if they can’t resign him and go after Gross big time.

This is what I would like to see happen:

Center- Jamaal Jackson starts and they draft Alex Mack to develop for this year
Guard – Shawn Andrews comes back and he is paired iwth Nick Cole as starters. McGlynn and Jean-Gilles are backups.
Tackle – They sign Gross and he is paired with Herremans as starters. Dunlap is kept to develop. Yes, I have given up on Winston Justice and he is cut.

With the other first round pick, they finally draft a running back. Be it Wells or Moreno.

Eagles really don’t need a guard.

You know Andrews and Herremans are both tackles converted to guard right? drafting a tackle wouldn’t be a bad thing. I still say go with OT but a OG isn’t horrible.

Yes, but

Both Andrews and Herremans have been playing guard for several years now. Andrews has made a pro bowl as a guard.

grab Hakeem Nicks in the first or second round.

IMO it would be a waste to use a first or second rounder on a WR especially Nicks who will be there in the third or fourth.

Curtis is great in the slot.

Curtis is also great as a number 1 … see 2007. Anyone who thinks Curtis is better in the slot then outside needs to revisit football 101 with Foos.

I hope more than anything else the Eagles give Jordan Gross a monstrous contract.

I would also like the Eagles to sign Gross.
Beanie Wells is great, but injury prone,

Listen I’m not a Beanie fan and I think there are better backs available at better bargain then his hype. But will people please stop saying he is injury prone. McNabb is injury prone, Buckhalter is injury prone, wells missed 3 games in his entire 3 year 39 game college career. When he returned he rushed for over 1,000 yards in I think 9 games which is pretty fucking good (I’d say he bounce back) … 1 injury does not make a guy injury prone.

Beanie Wells has been injury prone

1 injury does not make a guy injury prone. your not a ohio state fan i see nor do you follow the buckeyes .lol.. hes is an excellent player , but was Injured alot , you say he missed just three games his entire stay with the ohio state -buckeyes , prove it

consider it proven Check out his stats for his career and you’ll see he only missed 3 games and that was this year for the foot injury. I actually follow college football pretty close and being that I have friends from Penn State and Michigan State and Ohio State I would say I probably know the most about the Big 10 of any conference.

but was Injured alot

Prove it.

+1

ok your right about only missing 3 games -he may of played in all but 3 games but was taken out of alot games he didnt finish.

The scouts see the numbers. but they also see that Beanie has spent almost two thirds of his career fighting through injuries. There’s no doubt that Beanie is a top 5 pick talent. His rare combination of size and speed is perfect for the NFL, but teams have to be really careful about picking a guy who is injury prone.

Adrian Peterson had some of the same questions last year entering the draft. He had his fair share of injuries (including a broken collarbone) throughout his college career.

Just like Beanie, there was no doubt Adrian had talent and ultimately the scouts saw through it and he was drafted third overall and is undoubtedly one of, if not the best back in the NFL right now. However these durability issues seem to be affecting Beanie more than Peterson.

While he was amongst Ohio State’s most successful running backs, Wells was injured seemingly more often than not.

Some of his injuries have clearly been unavoidable, but one cannot help but question if his oft-injured body will hold up in a tough NFL. NFL defenses will be tougher and more physical than ever, so Wells may struggle even more with a standard NFL workload. He is destined for a third-down or platoon role in the NFL — nothing more.

i also think The durability questions are overblown and over-exaggerated
i would take him no doubt about it hes awesome , i think hes a bigger back the eagles could use in combination with westy , that would be sweet

Where's the link?
Eagles can be a futile discussion since they often ignore "need" and do whatever the hell they want. I give you the name Kevin Kolb.

While I’ll concede that no one could have saw this coming to say QB wasn’t a need is a little dumb. McNabb hadn’t finished a season in 2 years and we needed a back up plan.

A lot of what the Eagles do on draft day will depend on what is done in free agency.

This is very true but it’s still fun to speculate.

Winston Justice (a 2nd round pick in 2006) was supposed to be a future starting tackle but he has been a complete bust.

I don’t agree and I will give Justice a chance this off season to prove me wrong. We still need to draft OL in the first though.

They could stay at 21 and still get a decent back, although waiting until round 2 or 3 is the more likely scenario. Players of interest: Knowshon Moreno

Does this imply that he thinks Knowshon will be available either at 21 or in the 2nd or 3rd round because I highly doubt that. RB is a definite need this off season I’ll spare you my Tarrion Adams, Javon Ringer rant.
However, an elite pass catching tight end would greatly benefit Donovan McNabb and an offense that struggles in the red zone.

So Celek isn’t an elite pass catching tight end but some rookie will be? I doubt that, Celek is the guy we need a blocker IMO.

However, none of these guys have shown an ability to collapse the pocket and sack the quarterback. A disruptive tackle that can get into the backfield is needed.

Darren Howard had a lot of his sacks at DT, plus our DTs aren’t really meant to get to the QB although I wish they would. There job is to stuff the run (which they do) and take up as many bodies as they can so our DEs, LBs and even DBs can get to the QB.

I’m not even going to touch the WR situation again … I trust our FO although people won’t admit it they have done an excellent job drafting and grooming players.

great post

I agree with a lot of what you said.
However If we do draft a FB and convert klecko back to DT, then I think we are okay at DT and do not need to draft one.

I think beanie wells will still be available at 21.

I’m hoping we can get Wells and Britton or Wells and Pettigew or britton and pettigrew

by Manoovi on Feb 15, 2009 8:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

it was a copy paste bro

Southerland would be a great FB pick for the iggles. I watched him in Stanford Stadium and the guy is a beast. Plus, he can be used in short yardage situations to move the chains. This would be my ideal draft. Knowshon, Pettigrew, OT, Southerland, WR, DT. Doubt it will happen though :P

#5 over "kobb" anyday!

Hey, in case anyone sees this

What’s the deal with Joselio Hanson? He’s not coming back, and Lito probably won’t either. That leaves Ikegwono and ?

also, i like lesean mccoy for the eagles system better than chris wells.
i do like Moreno a lot, but no chances eagles get him.

Options

The thing I like about the Eagles in the draft this year is that they have many options…with 2 first round picks, the trade possibilities are there…

Trading out of the 1st round last year was a great move as I don’t think there were many guys on the Eagles radar that would have helped us immediately or weren’t going to drop to the 2nd round anyway…I think our draft class contributed about as much as can be expected from a draft class without a top 10 pick (DJax, Trevor Laws, Demps – despite the ARI game)…
