macho getting love in the rookie report

http://www.newerascouting.com/12/week-12-rookie-report/

S: Victor Harris – Philadelphia Eagles

With Matt Ryan and Michael Turner sidelined, it was obvious that the Falcons were going to try and get the ball to tight end Tony Gonzalez all afternoon. However each time Chris Redman looked his way, Harris was right there with him. He shut him down all afternoon, shadowing his every move while maintaining a physical presence against the much bigger Gonzalez. The majority of Gonalez’s 8 receptions were when Harris was off the field but when he was there, Atlanta had to really adjust their approach.

Honorable Mention: Louis DelmasDetroit Lions

He will be very key with the rest of our secondary banged up or out on suspension this week.

Thank u for posting this!!

Im glad somebody noticed how GREAT of a job Macho did against Gonzo! Macho had Gonzo locked down! I mean, dude was physical as heck. Macho has proven time and time again that he most def earned that nickname! As we all know even Sheldon Brown, earlier in the season when Macho was the starting free safety, gave praise to Macho. Saying how physical he is and the kind of presence macho gives out there on the field!

Reid did a good job of grabbing Macho! He really does remind me of Bdawk. He has that Bdawk-esque type of style! I hope he stays an Eagle for a very long time.!!! This cat can ball without a doubt. For a 5th round (most say if he had a better 40 time, he was a 2 or 3rd rounder) rook to come in and LOCKDOWN an ALLPRO future hall of fame TE is AMAZING!!!!!! I see u Macho

Its actually funny you say that . . .

because when I saw Macho handling Gonzo at the LOS, it really reminded me of a rookie BDawk. BDawk was a MUCH different player when he was young, but very pitbull like (and much less muscle) . . . but he just always had a tenacity about him. I am starting to see a little of that in Macho.

That's funny you say that...

because I caught myself thinking the same thing.

Then I was like… ehhh let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Macho isn’t quite the same player as Dawk, but I do love seeing that aggressiveness and fearlessness. One can only hope Macho turns into half the player Dawk is.

The Eagles are the first team in NFL history to have a running back and a wide receiver with 500 yards apiece in the same season before their 22nd birthdays.

Excatly ...Im not saying that he IS Bdwk...but only that he kinda reminded me of him

You never know what he can be he’s still a rookie I’m really excited about the way he plays so far but right now he’s a rookie and for all you know he could end up being a hall of famer or just another player, he doesn’t have to be the best to ever play the game in his first year, you never know when a player could have their breakout season and become a superstar.

the best part of macho is his physicality

if you rewatch the plays when he was on the field he was jamming the hell outta Gonzalez…for a rookie going against arguably the best TE of all time, that shows a lot of heart and passion. Harris is a CB, he excels there better than at safety in my opinion

He never played safety in college, so it’s a new position to learn as well as one of the harder defensive schemes in the league. I think if he’s going to have a future as an every down player in the NFL it has to be at safety, because he just doesn’t match up physically with some of the better receivers. He certainly has some coverage skills and toughness, though. I hope he sticks with the team.

Yes I agree...

Macho is STILL learning the nuances of the Safety position. To go from a college CB to and NFL SAFETY is a huge switch!!! But he has done a good job. Sean Jones is doing a good job also, but can he cover the deep ball or a WR in certain situations! Yes Jones had an INT last game but that ball was poorly thrown. We all saw it. Demps also has an INT against Eli this year…sooo!! Point is Macho is a good mix of Highly Physical play and Cover man. Plays the run well..Sounds like a Free Safety to me. Im not claiming he is perfect nor the best safety we have…but simply that hes done a good job given he was a college CB.

Scouting report = Fail

1. So Harris changed the Falcons game plan even though he wasn’t even covering Gonzalez an overwhelming majority of the time?

Falcons targeted Gonzalez 12 times and most of the times the Eagles had a LB on him and not a safety. In fact, a LB (White/May/Gocong/’Spoon) was covering Gonzalez on 7 of the 12 times he was targeted. The other people covering him were Howard, Jones, Patterson, and Brown. Harris was credit with covering him ONCE in those 12 targeted attempts. So I am sure the Falcons adjusted their entire offensive scheme for Gonzalez because of a guy who covered him once when he was targeted 12 times by Redman.

2. What about the fact that Harris simply didn’t play as much in the Falcons game because of the increased time that Jones/Demps saw? Harris was likely in there in about half of the snaps on defense at best and didn’t play any CB on Sunday because Patterson was the nickel.

3. If Gonzalez was there entire game plan, why did they only target him 12 times and target White 20 times?

by MG77 on Dec 9, 2009 11:06 PM EST reply actions

Give the guy credit!

Going from College CB to NFL safety is not easy. By Far! It’s a whole different mentality! A whole different style of play. It takes a certain level of smarts! Do u know what the Falcons gameplan was.?! Every team should know that the Eagles are terrible against TEs! When we came into that game week, most of us thought, Crap..Tony G’s gonna kill us this game!!! But he didnt! Why, other than Redman at QB, Macho did a great job of jamming Tony G at the line and was physical with him when he was responsible for him! Don’t give me this

why did they only target him 12 times and target White 20 times?
.
Cuz know one knows except the Falcons. Maybe it was bcuz that’s what there gameplan was or maybe it was bcuz MACHO did a nice job of locking Gonzo down!! Scouting report = fail…C’mon man!

Maybe Gonzo didn't get targeted much with Harris on him

because Harris was blanketing him? so the QB didn’t throw his way.

Best stat a CB can have is never being thrown at (unless your trying to bait the QB like Asante).

Macho did a great job.

by Smallbugger on Dec 10, 2009 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

Harris was credit with covering him ONCE in those 12 targeted attempts.

I specifically remember them showing replays of Macho jamming and covering Gonzo on at least two plays. Maybe he only got 12 targets because maybe he was well covered?

I still don’t see Macho as starting material but you can’t deny he did a great job on the greatest tight end to ever play the game. I was amazed at how physical 5’11 198 Macho was on 6’5 243 TG. Kid is tough.

Andy Reid is 43-5 when running the ball at least 30 times in a game( Ray Diddy on Eagles Post Game Live after Bears Victory)

A "target"

simply means times the QB intended a thrown ball for that particular player.

If Tony G was covered well (by presumably Macho), he’s not going to get many targets (why throw the ball to a guy who isn’t open); instead, Redman was forced to ‘target’ White 20 times hence the 1st 100 yard WR against the Eagles all season

Not a Harris hater

Look I don’t dislike Harris. It is asking him an awful lot to come into this league and start outright at FS. Comparison to Dawkins don’t make any sense. Its unfair to Harris.

Maybe Harris’ coverage of Gonzalez was fairly decent because Gonzalez wasn’t targeted as much. I just don’t remember Harris playing that much or on Gonzalez exclusively when he was in either.

Still, I don’t understand this talk though about how awesome Harris is either. There is a reason that he isn’t seeing as much playing time recently and it isn’t because Jones/Demps are that great either. If Harris was playing at such a high level, then he would be the starter out there (and not the steady but mediocre Jones) and increasingly playing a number of snaps.

He just isn’t and generally isn’t out there more than 50% of the snaps and you almost exclusively see Jones/Demps on 3-down passing situations.

Harris certainly has plenty of room to improve and likely will but to give him a ton of credit is really pushing it too. Overall, FS is one of the two weak spots in this defense along with MLB

by MG77 on Dec 10, 2009 1:24 AM EST reply actions

Further stats . . .

- Harris didn’t have a personal foul.
- Harris was called for pass interference in the 1st qtr while defending Tony Gonzalez.
- Harris gave up a big play to White in the 2nd qtr for a 27-yard gain.
- Falcons ran the ball 17 times, passed 18 times in the 1st half. If anybody had a huge impact on this game, it was the defense-line which almost completely stymied the running game in the 1st half. They also had a nice pass rush that helped to make Redman even more erratic. By the time the 4th quarter rolled around, it was over and Falcons were just reduced

To insist that Harris had a meaningful impact on this game is really stretching it to say the least. Doesn’t mean he played decently in his limited time while in there but it is a complete load to say that Harris changed the Falcons’ game plan or had a huge impact on this game too.
