8-4, where do we go from here?

I figured I'd follow up with my post from 2 weeks ago, and take this time to take stock.

Star-divide

First of all, at 8-4 we are almost certainly going to get in the playoffs.  I had predicted that we would go 5-1 in our last 6, and that's still looking pretty good.  If we do that, we'll have a good shot at winning the NFC East.  10 wins will probably get us in the Wild Card but likely not the East, so let's look at the next 4 games.

At Giants:

Like I said before, these guys scare me a lot, for a lot of reasons.  They play well at home and are trying to prove something and they have a good shot at winning the East themselves.  Their schedule: Home against us, At Washington, home against Carolina, then At Minnesota.  Look, if they beat us Sunday, what's to stop them from running the table?  Washington - Win.  Carolina - Win.  The highly overrated Minn?  Win.  You heard it here first, folks.  The Giants win, they win the NFC East through tiebreakers.

Home vs. San Fran:

In one sentence - If we can't beat San Fran at home in December, we don't deserve to be in the playoffs.

Home vs. Denver:

A hot starting team, which last has a big road win October 19 at San Diego (pre-SD getting their act together).  They will be dangerous, and likely fighting for a playoff spot of their own, but I think this will be a win.  Ask me again December 26.

At Dallas:

Who knows with Dallas?  They're entering a killer part of their schedule, San Diego at home, At the Saints, At Washington, home against us.  That looks like a 2-2 or even a 1-3 stretch there, even if Dallas plays well.  Possibly they will enter the game with us at 9-6, needing a win to make the wild card (Green Bay has the tiebreaker over them).

The way I see it, if we win Sunday against the Giants, we will probably run the table going into Dallas, and will have the NFC East wrapped up at that time.  Will we rest our starters?  Or will we be fighting for something else?

Minnesota has ridden a soft schedule to a 10-2 record.  They are playing Cincy at home, At Carolina, At Chicago, and then the Giants (fighting for a Wild card) at home.  If they lose to Cincy Sunday, they may be facing the Giants needing to win to ensure a first round bye.

I have built a rather tall building out of a rather small foundation here, but I believe my thinking is clear.  A win Sunday combined with a Vikings loss will likely lead to us having a solid shot at the #2 seed and a first round bye.

I’ll admit, after yesterday I’ve allowed myself the #2 seed bye week fantasy as well.

Not gonna happen though.

my thoughts....

I think a first round playoff bye, while not out of reach, is a bit of a longshot. The Vikings would need to really shit the bed, but I’ve seen crazier things.

I would agree that beating the Giants would put the Eagles in prime position to take the NFC East, because I do believe the Cowboys will lose at least two more games, and they just seem to find ways to lose in December. They outplayed the Giants and still lost the game, hopefully a sign of more bad things to come ;)

You said it exactly right as far as San Fran goes. Thats one the Eagles MUST NOT let slip away.

by captainmike011 on Dec 7, 2009 4:11 PM EST reply actions

First of all, at 8-4 we are almost certainly going to get in the playoffs.

Not even remotely true 8-8 will not get us in the playoffs 2 of those losses will be to wildcard contenders not only taking away a h2h tie breaker but also moving them closer. I know what you meant but let’s try and keep this modest for now.

San Fran finishes it’s season with the Cards/Eagles/Lions/Rams … they could end the season 8-8 or even 9-7 and if they beat us welp there goes the tie breaker.

Green Bay only needs 2 wins to get to 9-7 so they would grab a wild card ahead of our 8-8 team.

The Giants finish against the Redskins/Panthers/Vikings all winnable games not to mention they are only 1 game behind us. Even worse if they somehow beat us.

Like I said before it will take at least 10 wins to get the playoffs and 11 to win the division. The Eagles need to beat the Giants then the Niners if they win those two games then at 10-4 they would be guaranteed a playoff spot.

No other team not already in the playoffs would be able to get over 10 wins and we would hold the tie breaker over all the teams that could get to 10 wins Falcons/Giants.

I will grant you

that 8-8 will likely not make the playoffs. However, I do not believe we are going 0-4 over our next 4 games, and I’m a little suprised if you thought I meant that.

to put it simply

I think we win Sunday night in prime time. We have a history of playing well in NY late in the season lately.

Honestly its the 49er game and Bronco game scare me a little

Yeah

Vernon Davis and Frank Gore remind me of Antonio Gates and LT, and we saw what those guys did to us.

As for the Broncos, it will be painful to watch #20 on the other team. I am not a player fan; I will be screaming and yelling for the Eagles. But I will not be happy rooting against Brian Dawkins.

forget Davis and Gore....

its Alex Smith that has me worried. Give their coach many props for being able to utilize Smith and for his talents. the kid is actually a good QB

Not as high on the Giants as you are

Don’t get me wrong. If I know my Eagles, they can find a way to lose any game in which they play.

However, if Jeremy Maclin, Desean Jackson (if he plays), Jason Avant, Reggie Brown, and Brent Celek don’t go absolutely nuts on this secondary, I will be disappointed. They are starting CC Brown at safety!

So, if we lose to the Giants, I will have lost a lot of faith in our ability to make noise during the postseason.

by tanman5 on Dec 7, 2009 5:35 PM EST reply actions

+1

I’m not worried about the Giants. For some reason whenever I watch games against them i’m stress free. Giants didn’t look all that great against the cowboys.

by ssean2266 on Dec 8, 2009 7:49 AM EST up reply actions

CC Brown is so terrible… we should make our offense centered around finding out what he is doing on a specific play.

He WAS terrible.

He’s improved to a point were he’s not an extreme liability.

Trust me. If we have CC covering Jackson, there’s bigger problems at hand, and we won’t be winning anything.

he still gets victimized still… With our WR’s and expecially with Avant stepping up as of late, we will most definantly pick on CC brown.

more of a red zone thing

He’s been pretty much replaced by Aaron Rouse anyway.

If Michael Johnson is active for the game, that’s a lot less time for CC.

Aaron Ross, Rouse and M-Johnson will get most of the time as safeties.

If the team has a clue, they’ll only use Brown as an extra LB and blitz him. No coverage responsibilities in the RZ at all.

If we pull out a win on sunday there really isnt much we can do to miss the playoffs. Even if we drop three straight afterwards, I feel we make the wildcard. Although, in that scenario I just dont see us going anywhere afterwards. The giants would have to win out and the packers as well to beat us. Not that I think this will happen. Its just I feel we can clinch soon.
I think we go 3-1 to end the season, dropping either the giants or cowboys game and ending up 11-5, winning the division.

by jho on Dec 7, 2009 6:11 PM EST reply actions

If we win on Sunday, we eliminate everyone except the Giants and Packers from passing us who isn't already ahead

So, pretty much, it means that the Giants will have to play perfect football down the stretch, and for us to not win again, for us to be left behind come playoff time.

And yes, I was watching that Cardinals game closely last night. We have a chance (give it 20%) of getting the bye. The Vikings aren’t very good, and it’s about that time of year where Big Brett does his best Neil O’Donnell impression.

As expected...

Brett Farve sucks when AP is taken out of the game(19 rush yards).

This game should remove Farve from MVP considerations.

Well in ancient times a long long long time ago

there was a man name Farve. He had golden blonde hair and was built like a lady’s man. He hunted dragons and still had enough time to sleep with 1000’s of women on a daily basis.. One day he was approaced by a witch who said "in a fucking long ass time in the future there will be a man named team serbia… He will be JIBTA’s special little Jack Ikuonau look alike who will take it in the ass daily from JIBTA.. And if you change the spelling of your name from Farve to Favre then you will greatly baffle him with the reasoning of the “r” being pronounced before the “v” until one day a great warrior named “wild_eagle” comes and explains the reasoning to him through a very random story"

the end.

Favre will win the MVP for sucking ass down the stretch?

Last weekend’s games marked the twelth set of sixteen. That sounds about right for a 40-year old’s body to break down.

If Peyton Manning doesn’t win the MVP, then people don’t understand the definition of MVP. Adrian Peterson is infinitely more valuable to the Vikings then Favre is. They won 10 games with TAVARIS JACKSON as their quarterback because Adrian Peterson is inhuman.

Speaking of which, how’s Brandon Jacobs doing?

The only way the Vikings start losing games out of nowhere is if the loss of EJ Henderson has a huge impact on them, which is possible, but I just don’t see it having that big of an impact. Anything is possible, obviously, but I have to believe the likelihood of us winning out and the Vikings losing two more games is very slim.
