Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

My First FanPost in a loonnnngggg Time

Yo yo people, I'm anuj. Most of you guys might not know me, but the old guys will. I was a bigtime contributor to BGN back in the day. College has taken its toll on me, but come Sunday, I'm decked in my #5, eagle green on my head, and yellin obscenities to the TV. I'm trying to work BGN back into my schedule so I'm takin a shot at a FanPost again.

So, here is was I'm burning about (please don't sue me Jim Rome):

1. WE ARE SET AT WIDE RECEIVER!!!

Damn, I mean seriously people? These two drafts were amazing for Andy as he solidified out WR core for the next couple years. Think of the headache defensive coordinators are going through as they have to gameplan for DeSean and Maclin lined out wide and Avant in the slot? The injury bug as bit our team once again, so we are seeing a lack in receivers in the roster, but read this sentence again... INJURY BUG! A healthy roster includes (in starting order) DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, Kevin Curtis, and Reggie Brown. Thats the most potent receiving core from any team in the NFC East, let alone the NFC (maybe sans the Saints). We don't need Boldin, we don't need TO and we don't need to dish out cash to another star receiver with two budding ones already on the roster!

2. Resign

Players we need to resign should be in this order: Leonard Weaver, Jason Avant, Nick Cole, Akeem Jordan, Chris Gocong, Sean Jones, and maybe Babin. The rest can burn. Now please, can we move on from this topic?? please?

3. JIBTA is a dick. Get over it and stop being a dick back. Your not cool, your not a badass, your just stooping to his level.

4. Reid Deserved to be resigned

Yes, he has some questionable calls. Yes, the man is way to much pass happy, Yes, the man is extremely fat. But his winning record does not lie. 105-66. That's .614. Teams would kill to have a coach with that record. Not to mention the man is amazing at drafting and pulling in players. Thanks to him, we have McNabb under center and not Tim Couch.

5. My Draft Wishes?

Knowshown... lol, no jk. We need a LB, plain and simple. I know this is repeated over and over, but hey, we suck right now at the LB spot. OT is a issue, but thats depth, we have two great starters. Our CB core is FINE. We just have had a series of unfortunate events. A power back would be nice, but im not feeling it anymore with Weaver in the backfield. Most likely a FS or SS would be pulled in too.

Well, I'm glad I finished this rant and posted a FanPost. I'm gonna head to class now. Good to meet yall. Bleed eagle green forever people!

Nice

I COMPLETLEY agree, we NEED to resign Weaver. I was sooooooo happy when we picked this guy up, hes a tank!. Avant is the MAN and we need him back in the rotation as well. Reggie had a great game yesterday as well

As far as the draft goes, I also think we should go for a LB. with Big Stew and Spoon back there, one more 1st rounder would make our back 7 rediculous.

Disagree about Gocong

This is a deep LB offseason and Gocong is out of position in our system. He is a better fit as a 3-4 olb

I think we get a LB such as

micah johnson(my favorite LB in the game thats a noneagle)… then move gocong to DE to beat the shit out of the left side.

Micah Johnson is a MIKE though

I don’t know if he could make the switch to SAM. Interesting though. I’d rather see us go after Derrick Johnson or Kirk Morrison.

We also need a defensive end opposite Trent Cole. This guy could be putting up 15 sacks a year if he had a consistent presence on the other side.

by tanman5 on Dec 7, 2009 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

Micah Johnson

Is a Mike, but he has the speed and quickness to play either Mike or Sam. I have been scouting him all this season. He might not be the biggest playmaker on the field, but he is no less than solid. He is as sure tackler as there is in the NCAA. He just needs to work on his over aggressiveness (he has a tendency to go for the big hit to much) but he can blow up a full back, hit like a truck, but can keep up with some of the fastest. He won’t be a first rounder, but is a great value in the second and a steal in the 3rd. He should have a great combine. I personally believe he will project to be a better NFL player than college.

by macjack09 on Dec 7, 2009 5:48 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

No way I agree with most but I see

him as an immediate starter for us… He does get overly aggressive but look at all the big hits and smart plays he makes..

And he’s listed as the 2nd or 3rd LB overall… He will most definantly go in the 1st if not very early 2nd.

Actually

He’s listed as the number 5 middle linebacker on the big board of espn (even though I think he shouldn’t be behind Daryl Washington and Sean Lee) and on CBS Sports as #4, and every other one I have seen at least number 4. As much talent as he has, unless he has a lights out combine he will not go into the first round. I’m not trying to sound like an ass I am just telling you from what I have read and seen on every site. He is projected to go in the 3rd or 4th round but I don’t think he’ll make it out of the 2nd. He simply has not put up enough of a “highlight plays” to be taken in the 1st round. I understand he’s you favorite LB wild, but the fact remains unless he has a Vernon Davis combine, he will not be a first rounder. The only LBs projected to go in the first round are Rolando McClain, Brandon Spikes, Sean Weatherspoon, and possibly Navorro Bowman (depending on his combine Travis Lewis). I think he is a great LB and easily take the SLB spot (maybe even shift around the formation). But ge will not go in the first round cold bore regardless of his talent.

Whatever then...

Take him in the 2nd… As long as we get him im fucking happy..

ANUJ . . . .what's up playa

We are rowing in the same boat my friend because I concur with everything you’ve said. First and foremost, the Eagles NEED to bring back Weaver; he is a blessing. With “The Weav” signed back to the Eagles, then we can stop stressing less about Westbrook. From there, Avant (in my mind) has clearly shown why we should resign him back to our squad. From there, any help on the OLine or Dline ALWAYS helps because . . hey. . .this game is ALL ABOUT the “battle in the trenches”. So Nick Cole knows our scheme and plays it well too.

When it comes to players we could use to help us be as strong as we can be, I say we go defense. LB core has been hurt, pushed around, banged up and with Stew back healthy next year, it will become strong again. Furthermore, with Witherspoon too, we are talking about one strong LB away from being a dominate force there . . . .(draft Spikes??) . . .maybe.

I love our Eagles and we are coming together when the going gets tough. If our Defense holds, there’s no telling how high we can go!

by EagleFan_FromCalifornia on Dec 7, 2009 3:09 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

1st. I love our receiving core. I said let Maclin grow and look at him now: 12 games, 46 rec, 623 yrds, 4 TDs. So much for the bust he was being called in the preseason. He has been great so far. I honestly believe we have the best receiving core in the NFC East. DeSean and Maclin could be the next Anquan Boldin (ok maybe not that good) or Chad Ochocinco and TJ Houshmandzadeh.

2. WE NEED TO RESIGN WEAVER!!! I have never seen a fullback make a 59 yard catch and run less a one-handed catch. He is a monster and needs to be in midnight green for the rest of his career. Resign Akeem and Avant as well (don’t jump too early again though Avant lol). I really could care less about Gocong and Sean is seems like he is starting to come into his own (even though that INT was a gimmy). But, if he continues to improve then I don’t see why not.

3. The draft on linebackers I have been keeping my eyes open and this draft is littered with ones I have been scouting and I like such as: Eric Norwood, Micah Johnson, Sam Maxwell, Daryl Washington, Dekoda Watson, Navorro Bowman, Reggie Carter, Rico McCoy, Travis Lewis, Bruce Carter, and Quan Sturdivant. Most (except Bowman) are late round prospects that we could great that I believe will turn out great. If we do decide to go for a safety in the draft my thoughts are that it would be: Morgan Burnett, DeAndre McDaniel, Kam Chancellor (though he might switch to LB), or Nate Allen. As for CB, I think we are fine but it wouldn’t hurt to start grooming one early and if we were to draft one, my thoughts are it would be a middle to late round one so we could let them get into the system. Alterran Verner and Trevard Lindley are the most likely candidates for the middle to late rounds for that. Or even Ras-I from Virginia.

Thats just what I think though. Great post.

Draft

I really like the idea of picking up a talented DE. I know that highly picked defensive ends seem to often end up as busts, but it’d be nice to see us pick up an end in the first three rounds.

Its pretty clear we need some more linebacker depth, but, if we were to start Jordan at will, Witherspoon at mike and Bradley at sam I think our starters next year could be very solid. Besides, I think there will be several attractive free agents available this year who could take Gocong’s spot if we threw some money at them.

I think this year Andy goes back to drafting what he loves, linemen, both offensive and defensive, with maybe a defensive back or two mixed in there.

by AZ Eagle on Dec 7, 2009 3:29 PM EST reply actions

yes!

i missed that. I am still high on Abiamiri but until he proves himself, we NEED a left end to line up with Trent. Trent is a endless motor and if we could get someone similar rushing from the other side, McDormitt would have no problem rushing 4 and having others drop back. Bunk and Mike with push in the middle and close the gaps while DE X and Trent close the pockets from the side. I think I’m crying now thinking about it.

I’ve taken over an office for my company so I only get to cruise through anymore too.
1. Receivers are set. With Brent locked up at TE and a chance that C. Ingram comes back healthy… dangerous.
2.Weaver needs to be locked up now. Period, although I think we have no cap room left (Celek & Justice deals) and he will reach FA when the un-capped year sets in… anyone know for sure? Akeem is a keeper.
3. I like JIBTA, his theatrics have grown on me… like a younger brother you never liked, but have to love.
4. Reid: It depends on the week how I feel about this topic. Last week, fire him, this week, keep him. MEH!
5. Draft I’d go DE, OL, LB, S then whatever

Great to see you back.

I posted about cap space the other day

we’re fine considering:

1. of Donovan’s $24M guaranteed, we took 20 of it this year. Don only costs us $5M next year
2. reasonable chance Westy isn’t here next year (that’s $11M)
3. if we cut Shawn Andrews ($3.5M)
4. Vick won’t be here ($4.5M)
5. reasonable chance Kevin Curtis isn’t here ($5M)
6. Darren Howard is getting up there in age, if we bring in young talent, he could go ($4M)

so we have some room to work with if we make a few adjustments

doesnt McCoy lead all NFC rookie RB's in rushing yards???

lets see McCoy fits our system alot better and has completely filled the void left by Westy(given with some help from Weaver)…

McCoy will be just as good as Knowshon.

Knowshon was regarded as the best pass-catching RB in the draft, so I don’t see how you can say that Mccoy fits our system a lot better? Also, Moreno and even Wells both have higher yards/carry and more TDs.

by Team Serbia on Dec 7, 2009 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

a lot of our running troubles this year

were not on McCoy. We’ve dealt with a makeshift line, coaches notorious for being quick to give up on the run, and honestly TERRIBLE play up front by that line.

We’re starting to move the ball on the ground now, but I don’t think things would have been much different with Moreno or Wells

I'm not saying Mccoy is bad or anything

I mean he dances around the hole too much but hopefully that comes with time. This is precisely why I believe we use Buckley on short-yard plays. He knows how to hit the hole properly.

Personally, Id perhaps make a case to say id prefer Moreno over Mccoy, but Wells belongs in more of a smashmouth running offense.

Moreno is regarded as the better pass catcher, and picks up the blitz better which is prolly the most important skill a RB in our system needs. But I think we need to start looking at CBs when we draft. Sheldon and Asante have 7-8 years under their belt and I am not comfortable with looking at Hanson or Patterson as replacements. And I dont know enough about Pope, Roberson or Woodson – or if they’re still even on the team!

I want another tandem to come in and watch Brown and Samuel, just how Sheldon and Lito watched Taylor and Vincent. And I wouldnt shed a tear to see any of our (non-starting) CBs hit the road in favor of some proven college studs that will eventually be our CBs of the future.

He shouldn't have taken a diuretic, but others can
Two Minnesota Vikings, Kevin Williams (FSY) and Pat Williams (FSY)— who are not related — tested positive in 2008 for the diuretic bumetanide, which is banned by the NFL because of its masking capabilities. The players acknowledged taking the over-the-counter weight loss supplement StarCaps, which did not state on the label that it contained bumetanide. Neither player is accused of taking steroids.

The NFL issued four-game suspensions, but both players sued the NFL in state court, arguing the league’s testing violated Minnesota laws. The case was moved to federal court, and the NFL players union filed a similar lawsuit on behalf of the Williamses and two New Orleans Saints players also suspended.

In May, a federal judge dismissed the union’s lawsuit and several claims in the Williamses’ case but sent two claims involving Minnesota workplace laws back to state court. A judge there issued an injunction prohibiting the NFL from suspending the players and has scheduled the trial for March.

That led the NFL to allow New Orleans defensive ends Charles Grant (FSY) and Will Smith (FSY), who had also been issued four-game suspensions for testing positive for bumetanide, to continue playing.

But he doesn’t strike me as our CB of the future. He impressed me against TO and I definitely loved that long TD run from last year, but I think he’s destined to be a nickel back and only an occasional starter.

And his height bothers me too. I know 24 and 22 are only 5’10, but when someone is listed as 5’9, they’re probably shorter.

4. Reid Deserved to be resigned

If there is anybody out there that disagrees with this, then you’re delusional. He is one of only four coaches in the history of the game to win more than 100 games in a decade. The other three are hall of famers (or one is a sure-fire HOFer). Yes, he wastes timeouts. Yes, he passes too much sometimes, but 31 other teams would be knocking down Andy’s door if he got loose. He would be the highest paid coach in the league, by a long shot, if the Eagles would let him go. He probably will be the highest paid coach when the Eagle’s finish his contract extension, but he deserves it. (Until, of course, the Pats extend BB’s contract.)

For all of you who think we need to move on from Andy… look at the core of young, promising players that he has brought in. He’s had the team right on the brink of a championship for years and he will get a ring before his career ends. Wouldn’t you hate to see him get one for another team?

The Eagles are the first team in NFL history to have a running back and a wide receiver with 500 yards apiece in the same season before their 22nd birthdays.

i really don't see us resigning gocong.

i’m not saying the guy is the worst linebacker in the league, but i don’t see him going to the pro-bowl anytime soon. for our team or another. a lot of people want us to go DE first, but i think our first priority should be strongside LB. i really think we would benefit from having a guy there who can cover and rush the passer, as opposed to settling for a guy who is just pretty good against the run. i’ve wanted to see gocong at LE for a while now, but it doesn’t look like thats going to happen.
