Avant, Weaver, Cole, Bradley, Mikell and our Salary Cap
As per PerrEagles post, I was curious myself how we looked regarding contracts and salary cap space. Here's what I found:
Players up after THIS year:
Jason Avant
Alex Smith
PJ Hill
Leonard Weaver
Max Jean-Gilles
Nick Cole
Omar Gaither
Chris Gocong
Akeem Jordan
Jeremiah Trotter
Tracy White
Sav Rocca
Sean Jones
Jason Babin
Antonio Dixon
Players up after 2010
Donovan McNabb
Kevin Kolb
Michael Vick
Brian Westbrook
Eldra Buckley
Victor Abiamiri
Stewart Bradley
Quintin Mikell
David Akers
******************************
Notes: From the first list, I think we can all agree that we need to sign Jason Avant, Leonard Weaver, Nick Cole, and Akeem Jordan to long-term contracts. Those guys have been great for us (even if it was just one year Lenny). I would personally like to see Babin, Tracy White, Gocong, Dixon, and Sean Jones brought back if the price were right. The rest I could take or leave...Alex Smith is depth, but not irreplaceable depth, same with Jean Gilles, and I would argue Omar Gaither. Trotter and Rocca can just go as far as I’m concerned. Seriously...we had a punt go 11 yards from our half of the field!
The next list gets very interesting, the biggest issue is the fact that we have no QB signed to play in 2011; and between this year and next Will Witherspoon is the only starting linebacker signed beyond 2010, and I’m including Bradley and Gaither as starters. We clearly need to lock either Donovan or Kevin up, decide what direction Westy’s life is going, and DEFINITELY extend Mikell and Bradley.
So where are we going to get the $$$ to keep the guys we need and sign new ones? Assuming there will be a new CBA, and a salary cap, here are some notes concerning the most expensive Eagles that we may not be getting good value from:
1. Brian Westbrook is going to cost just under $11M against the cap (assuming their is one) next year...is his health worth that kind of risk? He signed an extension in 2008, but the Eagles declined his bonus option for the last 3 years of his contract. This means that his salary in 2010 will be $7.25M with roughly $3M in LTBE incentives and other bonuses.
2. I really don’t see Michael Vick on this team next year. There’s $4.5M.
3. Kevin Curtis is going to cost just under $5M against the cap and we haven’t seen that dude in like a year and a half. He played 9 games in ’08, and only 2 so far this year.
4. Reggie Brown is going to cost $3M, but if we cut or trade him, his ridiculous bonus that has been prorated will be due immediately and cost an additional $3M of dead money.
5. Shawn Andrews will cost $3.5M...I’m not the only one thinking he’s gone.
6. Stacy Andrews’ salary next year is $3M...he also gets a $4.1M roster bonus should he ‘make the team’. Safe to say that if his issues don’t get figured out, there’s some money.
7. Darren Howard will make $3.5M next year with a $1M roster bonus. In 2011 that roster bonus jumps to $4M...also safe to say that if we bring Howard back in 2010, he won’t be here for that bonus in 2011.
8. Not that he’s going anywhere, but just as a note: Asante Samuel’s base salary in 2010 is about $10M (to give that perspective, Donovan’s is $12M, and Sheldon’s is $2.5M)
9. Because of the possibility of an uncapped year, Donovan’s contract renegotiation required that all of his guaranteed money from next year, be applied to this year’s salary cap. He cost $20.2M against the cap this year, but will only cost just over $5M next.
I think it’s clear that we have a lot of money locked up in a few guys that might be replaceable. Even with a cap, the Eagles will easily find themselves in a position to extend the guys we need, and bring in new talent.

I thought Max-Jean signed an exntension prior to the season? I could be wrong…
I agree with most except I would try to keep Alex Smith around 1 more year to Ingram could ease his way back in, I would bring back Akeem, I don’t think I would bring back Gocong, and Sean…I don’t know yet. With the possible free agent safeties, and pending the growth of Harris (I’ve pretty much given up on Demps) it could go either way for Jones.

MJG
is horrible. He singlehandedly lost the game for us in Oakland. Dude is a waste.
ok…not singlehandedly, but him, Gocong, Asante’s tackling, and King Dunlap did

max is a probowl guard on a team like the giants who play a power running style

He’s a better pass blocker than run blocker…
He’s ranked #50 in the league. Career backup.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

JIBTA, Unlike you I played football and not only did I play football
I play Guard and DE… I know a little bit about the O-line from expirience…
He was a mauler before he broke his ankle last year, this year he’s been soft…
and if you consider him a “probowl talent” how can you say herremans isnt?? Please use some solid facts that actually back up what your saying before you try this weak shit on me..
And Im pretty sure its well recorded that I know more about football than you do.
thats Cobb on Kolb crime if you ask me... as said by yophillybro
yea yea
i played rb and corner .. so what does that prove .. and herremans is over rated .. max is bigger and a better run blocker ..

Bull shit Herremans isnt overrated... All the people who talk about
Offensive Lineman say he is one of the best in the league..
He produces, look at most of our BIG runs, they come right between him and peters, you can say what you want, he accounts for 50% of those plays that come right over him and peters…
Max is bigger, but not better. If he were as good a run blocker as you say then (1) he’d be starting over Nick Cole at RG and (2) We would actually have some room to run on the right side..
And so what you played 10 years ago.. The game has changed, and just because you played corner and rb doesnt mean you know shit..
BTW for someone who played RB and CB you would figure they would know Which RB’s are good and which are bad and the Jack sucks ass.
thats Cobb on Kolb crime if you ask me... as said by yophillybro
IMO Cwel87 has it rite............
@ the very least we can cut him in training camp……..but not until we are sure we have somthing better……….
This kinda goes along with the thread, but what position do you think this team will use a 1st round pick on in the draft? Im thinkng someone opposite Trent Cole to get have another sacking threat out there.
"I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care. "
Yup...
DE is certainly a possibility, and it’s a really deep position in this upcoming draft.
I think in the first round, they take the best available player at any of the following positions…
DE – Parker and Howard are on the wrong side of 30, and Abiamiri has been disappointing so far.
OL (anywhere) – Did we think before the season we had plenty of depth along the OL? Yup. Fact is, you never have enough OL depth. I think Andy rightfully gets back to his first love – big beefy guys along the OL, early and often.
CB – Age is creeping up on Sheldon Brown, and Ellis Hobbs may not be on the team next year. This is a passing league now, and you need a ton of depth at CB.
The following positions will also likely be address in later rounds…
RB – Even if Westbrook is physically able to play next season, he’s set to make $11 million. The Eagles won’t pay that, and Westbrook, after 2 serious concussions, won’t be taking discounts. He may have played his last game in Philly. McCoy looks like a legitimate playmaker, but you simply need 2 RB’s in the NFL.
LB – I’m not so sure this is a glaring need. The 3-some of Witherspoon, Bradley, and Jordan sounds pretty good to me. Gocong is FA after this season, as is Gaither. Do they sign one for depth? I don’t know. My best guess is Gocong stays if they can keep him for a reasonable cost, and Gaither is gone. Plus, the penalties in the Dallas game aside, I like what I’ve seen out of Fokou so far (12 tackles vs SD). Will they draft a LB? In all likelihood yes, but don’t expect it to be a high pick.
DT – I don’t see it as a big, glaring need, but it’s another position where you can never have enough depth.
WR – Sounds stupid, right? Well, we currently have 4 WR’s (Jackson, Maclin, Avant, Brown). We’re stuck with Brown for a while, but Kevin Curtis is set to make $5 million next year – He’s gone. By sheer numbers, they’ll need to draft a WR.
QB – Vick will likely be gone after this season, and McNabb might be gone after 2010. They’ll start to groom a backup for Kolb.
wow
if u think sean adrews gets cut ur insane .. u dont cut one of the best lineman in football who signed a long term deal and is cheap! 3.5 mil is a joke for him .. he aint going anywhere .. he will be back
