Avant and our salary cap
This is just a quick question, however I think we could stem some pretty good debates off of this.
Where do you think the Eagles should look to find the neccessary cap space to sign Avant after this year?
Clearly Avant and Weaver are the top two priorities for the Eagles to re-sign this offseason, but where should the money come from? I know, I know, if there isn't a CBA in place there will be no cap so the eagles can spend whatever they want. Hypothetically though, what if there is a CBA?
The obvious answer has to be the Andrews brothers. Stacey signed a contract that pays him to be a starting tackle, not a back up guard, very different pay scales. Shawn Andrews signed a contract extension if I am not mistaken, which is cap friendly, so he may not be the answer.
Anyone have any insight into this?

If there were a CBA
The EAgles would have more than enough cap space next season to sign or re-sign whoever they want.
Also, if there is no no new CBA Avant would not be eligible for free agency anyway.
Yeah, why do we have to sign them now… can’t wait just wait until next year? That would make the most sense. I understand they are playing well and we want to keep them, but we don’t have to do it immediately – we got next year.

ever since the redskins signed haynesworth (at which point I was under the impression they had minimal remaining cap space) for 100 million dollars, I became convinced that the salary cap is relatively easy to work contracts around.
Especially since were so far under it to begin with

I'm not worried about next year...
The Eagle’s FO will have plenty of time to sort out who they want to re-sign, who they want to tender, and who they want to let test free agency. Right now, I’m worried about the Birds taking care of the Falcons this week.
As for Avant and Weaver… I trust that the FO will keep those two in some way, shape or form after the CBA is worked out (or not worked out). The problem is, last year I trusted them to at least keep Dawkins and look how that worked out.
But then again
The Eagles are the first team in NFL history to have a running back and a wide receiver with 500 yards apiece in the same season before their 22nd birthdays.
Am I the only one who thinks OJ Atogwe is a possibility?
I really hope they go after this guy. He’s only 28 and would be the answer to our problems at safety (arguably #2 after Ed Reed in the NFL right now)
Going to have to pay him around 8-9 mil a year I don’t know he’s good but I don’t know if the Eagles pay that much for a safety when we have more pressing needs.
I’d love Atogwe though he can flat out ball.

It'll be interesting to see what ungodly dollar amount Jerry Jones spends this offseason
wont matter. They still wont win a playoff game
Dont Disrespect the Level
Even without a cap
There still severe restrictions on what a team can spend. If anything, it will make it easier for teams to keep their own players. Teams are limited to the number of free agents they can sign.
Front Office.....
The Eagles front office is one of the best in the league and Lurie is a very careful owner who doesn’t spend money foolishly. But he does spend it well. The Eagles are in good shape financially and will sign both Avant and Weaver along with a few other players who signed one year contracts this year. Hobbs, Sean Jones, Buckley….I think they all signed one year contracts and should get extentions. They’ve all contributed this year and should remain with the team. I believe Avant signed a 4 year contract 3 years ago. He’ll be well taken care of…..and so will Weaver. He’s been a beast. With the young players and new players, the Eagles will be set for several years in the future.
all i know is i had mid season signing with big bonus'
i really like to see what physical shape they are in come off season rather then give fat contract only to find out they end up on er 3 weeks later …

Peters, Spoon, Hobbs, Andrews, etc. - Who would have guessed that?
We have plenty of draft picks and a front office that can wheel and deal with the best of them. While Avant and Weaver are shoo-ins (as long as they stay healthy), I think we are in for as many surprises this off-season as we were in for last off-season. I wouldn’t dare to guess what the final 53 are gonna look like this time.
“Elmer is Better Than Buggs”
We'll cut Westbrook
He’s due 7 mil next season if we pick up his option.
aha, but what you don't know
is that it won’t be 7 mill. The extention he signed way back when was full of incentives, and the FO has already not picked up the latter part of the deal (past 2010), so next year is his last year under contract. The incentives were mainly based off playing time, so considering the odds are he won’t play until the last week or two of the season, he will have played less than 50% of the season’s snaps, his base will be the same, but his total salary will have a fair drop-off. The 7 million is not base salary, that’s the full extent of possible money he could get. The word is that 7 will drop down to 5.25 mill.
So, especially if next year isn’t capped, I fully anticipate BWest wearing green.
All of this supposing he will play again…:/

BWest is also in the class of Eagles
who the FO will re-sign until they really can’t go anymore. I think there were three guys in that class, one is gone, Westbrook is becoming a health risk, and the third is one year away from the end of his contract.
FWIW
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
I'm not worried...
about what they’re going to do with Avant, Weaver, Gocong, Hobbs, Sean Jones, Buckley, MJG, Nick Cole. All these guys are solid players. Some average role players, some above average (maybe Weaver being the only potential Pro Bowler). The FO almost always knows what to do with these types of players. At this point I trust the FO to make the right decisions on all of them whether it is to sign or franchise or let go.
The situations I’m more interested in seeing are:
What are they going to do with Westbrook?
What are they going to do with Kolb and McNabb both being in their last year of their contracts (next year)?
Will they be able to get a draft pick for Vick or have to cut him (keep him for another year? I highly doubt it).
Do they keep Curtis and his high salary or do they cut him (trade him?)?
Do they pay Sheldon Brown or hope he keeps quiet for another year while being greatly underpaid?
What in the hell do they do with the Andrews sisters?
And lastly (and most importantly)….
When are they going to re-sign Trotter to an extension??
The Eagles are the first team in NFL history to have a running back and a wide receiver with 500 yards apiece in the same season before their 22nd birthdays.
McNabb
will most definitely stay next year. They gave him the pay raise for that reason alone. These are his two final years to get us rings. After that, he will probably retire. He will be 35, but his early playing style has probably aged him, and considering his loyalty to Reid, I highly doubt that he would play with another team( at least, a team not coached by Andy Reid).
At this point, Kolb will be a young 27, seeing has he has played so little during his tenure as an Eagle. He will be the future, and will get extended after we see McNabb’s retirement press conference.
Vick is as good as gone. We will do our best to get something out of him (tops a 3rd round pick) by trading him to a desperate team (hello Raiders?)
KCurtis is gone. His salary is huge, and he is at best the #4 WR. It was good while it lasted
Sheldon will get paid. He is the best CB in the NFC, hands down. He will get his money.
Ahh…the Andrews’. I see a few possibilities here
1. Stacey is inactive for the rest of this season, and is given the job at RG with a fully healthy knee. We shouldn’t have expected as much as we did from him coming off an ACL tear in the second to last week of last season. We all know that is a year to a year-and-a-half injury to recover from. And then consider that he uses that knee to explode off the LOS and maul, not block, MAUL defensive linemen. Anyway, Nick Cole would probably sign somewhere as a starter.
1a. Supposing this happens, Shawn will have a few possible routes. If the FO gives him another chance (which at this point, considering how many they have, it seems like they will), he will get his contract re-adjusted and incentive-laden, and would duke it out with his brother and Winston for the starting job at RG or RT.
1a-I. If he were to beat out Winston at RT, we try to trade Winston.
1a-II. If he were to beat out Stacy at RG…well…
1a-II-1. If he beats out Stacy at RG, we try Stacy at RT and have him duke it out with Winston at RT, and if Stacy emerges as the starter at RT, we try to trade Winston.
1a-II-2. If Shawn beats out Stacy at RG, and Stacy can’t beat out Winston at RT, we cut Stacy.
1b. Stacey is inactive for the rest of the year, and is given another shot for the RG jog. If Shawn cannot get healthy by mid-preseason, he is cut or traded.
2. Stacy is activated by playoff time
2a. He does well
2a. He is given the job at RG no questions asked, and Nick Cole is not retained
2b. He sucks and is replaced
2b-I. Nick Cole steps in and continues to do well. He is extended at the end of the year and both Andrews’ are cut.
2b-II. Nick Cole steps in and doesn’t do so hot. He isn’t resigned and we let Shawn and Stacy duke it out in training camp for the job. Loser is cut, or competes with Winston for the RT job. (see above possible outcomes).
3. If neither Shawn or Stacy are healthy by mid-preseason, both are cut.
3a. If Nick Cole does well for the rest of the year, he is extended
3bI. If Nick Cole does less than well, he is let go and we go for a big name free agent (if a new CBA is signed)
3bII. Same as above, but it is uncapped year. Due to the likely event that we will be in the playoffs, we will be subjected to the “Top 8 Rule”, which means we cannot sign any top free agents. In this event, we most definatly draft a top OG in the draft.
3bIII. If it is uncapped and we dont make the playoffs, we sign a top free agent.
That’s about all I’ve got….
